Ford is bringing an electric Transit van to Europe by 2021

Ford plans to bring an electric Transit commercial van to the European market by 2021, as part of the automaker’s broader plan to electrify its global portfolio.

The automaker announced the Transit EV, along with more than a dozen other electrified consumer-facing models that will be part of its European portfolio, at its Go Further event in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Ford didn’t provide many other details on the Transit van. And for now, the EV commercial van is only slated for Europe. Ford’s focus on Europe makes sense, considering its sales record in the region. Ford sold 380,900 commercial vehicles in its European 20 markets last year, up more than 8 percent compared with 2017.

The company did say the commercial van is be “designed to address the needs of businesses for a practical and versatile load-carrier with zero-emission driving capability for urban applications.” That type of language suggests a city-focused vehicle that might have a mid-200-mile range. The all-electric Transit will be available in multiple body styles, Ford said.

Ford made several other commercial vehicle-related announcements on Tuesday, including the introduction of in its new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid that can seat people and will be available to European customers beginning in late 2019.

One of the more interesting pieces of commercial news is Ford’s new initiative to target 100 percent uptime for commercial vehicle operators. Ford plans to hit that target via a usage-based maintenance program that will be powered by a new app called FordPass Pro that was previewed at the event.

FordPass Pro app, which will be launched later this year, is specifically designed to support smaller firms and owner drivers to maximize their productivity.

“Commercial customers need smarter, more integrated solutions, built around a connected business environment,” said Hans Schep, general manager of commercial vehicles at Ford of Europe.

Ford also unveiled a Transit Smart Energy Concept, a 10-seater minibus. The concept, which has about 93 miles of driving range from a 4-hour charge, was developed by engineers at Ford’s Merkenich Technical Center in Germany. The concept uses a Ford Transit chassis fitted with the same battery-electric drivetrain technology as the StreetScooter WORK XL. StreetScooter is the company behind DeutschePost DHL electric vans.

Ford is working other iterations of the concept minibus that increase energy savings and extend battery-electric driving range, including features that would allow the driver to control heating and cooling of individual seats – and deactivation of unoccupied seats.

Ford says road trials with the Transit Smart Energy Concept are expected to begin later this year, after completing wind-tunnel tests. Ford engineers will take what they learn from these trials and future versions of the concept and eventually apply its range-extending features to volume production vehicles.

A year ago my wife and I owned our attainable dream cars-- a Ford Transit Connect and a Ford Fiesta ST. Six months ago we traded them in, hopped on a plane, and moved from Texas to my wife's hometown in Hungary.

Both the Transit Connect and the Fiesta ST are available* on the European market, so we could've bought replacements. We also could have shipped the cars from Texas to Europe. But, we decided to use the opportunity to buy interesting European cars that aren't available on the on the U.S. market instead.

Moving was fairly expensive so we decided to buy cheap cars-- the goal was to cost less than I make in a single paycheck. We wanted a practical family car that could fit the two of us, two kids in child seats, and occasionally two grandparents. We also wanted a small but practical hatchback that's fun to drive.

We bought a 2005 Peugeot 307 SW Supreme Roland Garros and a 2008 Renault Twingo GT.

The Peugeot is a great car. The styling is bland, but it doesn't commit any sins. I love the brown leather interior, and the seats are very comfortable for long trips. Mine has the 2.0 liter diesel engine that makes 100 kW (136 HP) and 320 Newton meters (236 lb-ft) of torque. The car weighs 1470 kg (roughly 3250 pounds), so while it's not very fast, it has sufficient power. The engine is mated to a wide ratio six speed manual gearbox. At 130 kph (80 mph) on the motorway, the car turns about 2200 RPM in sixth year and easily accelerates up to 160 kilometers per hour with just the application of the right foot and no downshifting needed. Turn in is a little bit heavy but direct and the car feels planted while turning but also manages to easily soak up road imperfections. It's the kind of car for easily eating up miles at high speed on long road trips.

My Renault Twingo is definitely not bland. Mine is the GT model, which comes from the factory with a 1.2 L turbocharged inline four that makes 100 HP. The previous owner installed a complete exhaust system and a tune that he claims has brought the car up to about 130 HP (and I believe him). He has also done some cosmetic modifications that are a little bit boy racer, but I think they suit the personality of the car. With 130 horsepower and a curb weight of 980 kg (2160 pounds), it's not extremely fast but it is incredibly fun. The engine begs you to rev it and wind out every gear. The short gears together with a surprisingly torquey engine make it great for both city traffic and back road blasting.

One of the surprising things about both cars is how much practicality can be packed into such small packages. The Peugeot has special sockets in the trunk area that allow fitting a third row of seats. On both cars the second row of seats can be slid forward or backwards to accommodate extra cargo or provide more legroom for the rear seat passengers. This is a handy feature that I haven't seen on U.S. market cars.

We'll probably keep both cars for another year or two before trading for something else. The wife would really like to own a Transit Connect again. I think the smaller Fiesta-based Transit Courier looks pretty cool (and could be fun with a tune), but I wouldn't be against a hot hatch like a 5th generation Fiesta ST (I tried but couldn't find any in good shape before I bought the Twingo) or maybe a Corsa OPC.

* The Fiesta ST and Transit Connect (passenger version is called a Tourneo in Europe) are available in Europe, but with differences. The Fiesta ST was only sold here in 3 door, while the US version was only sold with 5 door (I prefer 5 door), and, from what I understand, the European version was only available with the Recaro seats (I prefer the base seats). For the Transit/Tourneo, the European models aren't available with power seats or leather upholstery, and the top engine is a 120 HP diesel compared to the base 170 HP petrol engine in the (pre-2018 facelift) Connect in the US. On the plus side, most of the Connects sold in Europe come with a manual gearbox, which is nice.

Ford is bringing an electric Transit van to Europe by 2021

Ford plans to bring an electric Transit commercial van to the European market by 2021 as part of the automaker’s broader plan to electrify its global portfolio.

The automaker announced the Transit EV, along with more than a dozen other electrified consumer-facing models that will be part of its European portfolio, at its Go Further event in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Ford didn’t provide many other details on the Transit van. And for now, the EV commercial van is only slated for Europe. Ford’s focus on Europe makes sense, considering its sales record in the region. Ford sold 380,900 commercial vehicles in its 20 European markets last year, up more than 8 percent compared with 2017.

The company did say the commercial van is be “designed to address the needs of businesses for a practical and versatile load-carrier with zero-emission driving capability for urban applications.” That type of language suggests a city-focused vehicle that might have a mid-200-mile range. The all-electric Transit will be available in multiple body styles, Ford said.

Ford made several other commercial vehicle-related announcements on Tuesday, including the introduction of its new Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid that can seat eight people and will be available to European customers beginning in late 2019.

One of the more interesting pieces of commercial news is Ford’s new initiative to target 100 percent uptime for commercial vehicle operators. Ford plans to hit that target via a usage-based maintenance program that will be powered by a new app called FordPass Pro that was previewed at the event.

FordPass Pro app, which will be launched later this year, is specifically designed to support smaller firms and owner drivers to maximize their productivity.

“Commercial customers need smarter, more integrated solutions, built around a connected business environment,” said Hans Schep, general manager of commercial vehicles at Ford of Europe.

Ford also unveiled a Transit Smart Energy Concept, a 10-seater minibus. The concept, which has about 93 miles of driving range from a four-hour charge, was developed by engineers at Ford’s Merkenich Technical Center in Germany. The concept uses a Ford Transit chassis fitted with the same battery-electric drivetrain technology as the StreetScooter WORK XL. StreetScooter is the company behind DeutschePost DHL electric vans.

Ford is working on other iterations of the concept minibus that increase energy savings and extend battery-electric driving range, including features that would allow the driver to control heating and cooling of individual seats — and deactivation of unoccupied seats.

Ford says road trials with the Transit Smart Energy Concept are expected to begin later this year, after completing wind-tunnel tests. Kicking of with international news:  I am going to offer my arm chair opinion about Bernie Ecclestone’s 40 year reign at the top of F1 and loudly say to Liberty Media who are the new owners, lets make Formula One great again. If that phrase hasn’t been trade marked by someone else already... 

Since the Schumi era, Formula One has been a bit beige. It has lost its connection to the die hard petrol heads as well as the younger fans and I doubt it can sustain itself on the adenoidal anoraks, who which if are not retired are well um not here anymore. What am I on about? Well I used to watch Formula One every Sunday when it was on. I would ride my bicycle to my mates place and make a day of it. I was 13. Im not 13 anymore, rather the numbers have reversed and at this point my youthful excitement has temporarily been rekindled regarding fast car racing because we could see the return of ‘the glory days’ of yesteryear with Liberty Medias recent acquisition of the premier racing championship. Heres hoping!    

Moving on…The BBC reports that Volkswagen have overtaken Toyota as the worlds largest carmaker. Toyota  hailing from Japan if you didn’t know, has topped sales for the past four years, selling 10.175 million vehicles globally in 2016. That fell short of the 10.31 million sales which Germany’s VW reported last week.That comes despite VW's recent scandal over emissions tests cheating, which sparked a global backlash and multiple lawsuits. It seems as though bad publicity is good for business... note each picture in this piece bearing some truth to that... 

In the local market its much the same old players at the top of the log in terms of sales:

These are: -The Aston Martin V8 Vantage -  so thousands of South Africans have been deeply affected by this… er or not. -Ford Grand Tourneo Connect – which I thought was a good value practical people mover, apparently not everyone agreeing with me here   -Renault Clio Blaze & Clio GT line, model derivatives of what is a rather polite mid sized compact hatch -Toyota Corolla Sprinter  and -The VW Touareg V6 ... um who cares? That engine will soon be seen in the new Amorok, coming soon to a showroom near you.

Right so onto my wheels for the week:

The Opel Mokka X which is a recent almost come too soon facelift of the existing Mokka still to be found on dealer floors. So this big little Crossover is something of the taste of marmite for me. Some days I love it, some days absolutely not.

And this boils down to the only signifiant gripe I have with this vehicle. The power, or more specifically, the lack thereof.  The 1.4 Turbo mill which can produce 110 kilowatts and does in the Corsa Sport, only develops 103 kilowatts in the Mokka X. Marry that to a 6 speed manual transmission turning 19 inch wheel and the drive becomes a bit pedestrian.

It is simply not enough go and the vehicle feels sluggish at freeway speeds. Not dangerously so but noticeable. Now you may well think that I am splitting hairs over 7 kilowatts and being rather pedantic but heres the deal:

This New Opel may well be the most refined and premium feeling compact crossover the South African market has seen and is by far the most refined and comfortable one I have driven.

It is loaded with luxury kit from heated leather seats (yes please!) to touch screen sat nav, park distance control and the list goes on and on. In fact I struggle to think of a bell or whistle that the Mokka X does not have packed tightly into its snug but generous interior.

The X has been styled beautifully too, adding those 19s wheels to the already good-looking Mokka I had on test last year.

It is spacious, practical and easy to park. The suspension lulls you comfortably and the interior cocoons you from the cacophony of road noise. Further to this the premium heated leather seats with extended thigh support just reiterates the feell of premium luxury. I adored this premium luxury feel of what was once reserved for the bigger badges in the business.

The pricing seems reasonable to, starting from R317 500 for the entry model and R357 400 for the one on test, the super specced Cosmo.

Auto options are available for around 10 grand more per derivative, which would be my pick as I really enjoyed the auto in the Mokka from last year. So marmite then, I loved it and hated, but ended up loving it more, isn’t that often the case in most heart involved relationships?

Ford is expanding its Active range of vehicles, which are aimed at those who enjoy “outdoor and leisure pursuits,” with the new Tourneo Connect Active and Transit Connect Active. The two new models join the Active and Trail variants of the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom that were released last month.

Styling revisions for the smaller Active people movers include roof rails, front and rear skid plates, along with plastic cladding on the body to prevent paintwork scuffs when negotiating brush trails or when loading tools or equipment.
