We Need to Talk About Lara’s Sexuality

Okay so here’s the thing. After the rumoured script leak of what very well may or may not be a part of the Tomb Raider game were a romance between Lara and another woman is alluded, various members of the Tomb Raider fan community lost their god damn minds because apparently that possibility is alienating the basis of the character too much...

...Let’s take it step by step.

First of all, I always interpreted Classic Lara as asexual and Survivor Lara as a lesbian. These are my heacanons. This is in no way part of the games’ canon. Likewise, as is natural, various people have their own personal headcanons and that’s all okay. The issue is that you can’t present your own personal headcanons as facts.

If I absolutely had to choose guys or girls as Lara’s sexual preference I’d go with the girls, simply because most of the male characters both Core and Crystal have made so far have been ugly whereas the women have been considerably hotter, and I say that as a gay man, if that means anything to you. Ultimately I don’t think a love interest is at all necessary in Tomb Raider and I’d rather they keep Lara’s sexuality vague as it has always been so far.

Brecause the fact is that there has never been an official love interest in any canon Tomb Raider material. So no, Lara possibly being gay in the next game does not go against already established canon because she was never straight to begin with, and of course this goes both ways so no, she was never gay either. Now, I understand that just assuming Lara is straight because, for years, characters being straight across all forms of media was the common thing to expect and yes, in the original comic book line and the Angelina Jolie movies (and I think the short animated series?) Lara does have male love interests but guess what? These are not part of the main canon. They of course played a major part in influencing common perception of the character and, the movies in particular, influenced Crystal’s Classic version of the character as, in their own words, she was envisioned as a combination of Core’s games and Angelina’s movies, but I don’t see how non-canon material should ultimately play any detrimental part in deciding whether Lara having romantic or sexual relationships with men should prevent her from having any with women.

But let’s see what goes on with Lara’s “love interests” in the games themselves shall we?

Spoilers: There are none. But here is a list of common names that pop up whenever someone is desperate to prove why Lara has always been straight or gay or whatever.

1. The Earl of Farrington

In Lara’s original 1996-1998 biography, it is mentioned that Lara’s parents arranged a marriage for her with the Earl of Farrington. A marriage that we ultimately never know if Lara agreed to because after her plane crash to the Himalayas Lara decided that she didn’t wanna be a Countess any more and wanted to play Tomb Raider instead and therefore the Earl is specifically stated to “still be waiting”. This tells us that he either proposed but Lara never reciprocated or that Lara’s and his parents arranged their marriage, as is common in aristocrat families, but never managed to see it through because Lara went cray-cray. Furthermore it is never explicitly stated if they actually had any sort of relationship, romantic or not, before her plane crash, it is only stated that she was proposed to and that she never gave an official reply back.

2. Jean-Yves

Lara’s archaeologist friend from Last Revelation was at one point considered as a possible love interest for Lara but the idea was never properly explored (thank god). The character was eventually changed altogether and became Charles Kane, Lara’s high school history teacher, because, as it turns out, there was an actual French archeologist stationed in Egypt that was also named Jean-Yves and also kinda looked like him and he was like “What the fuck are you doing?” which is very iconic as an incident, not gonna lie, but not enough to justify pairing him with Lara..

3. Kurtis Trent

Kurtis was also considered as a love interest by Core, who apparently have shit taste in men because I cannot believe that the two people they wanted to pair the most succesful woman in gaming with were A. balding goofy French guy and B. edgelord creep who probably smells like weed and urine... Regardless, many people ship Lara and Kurtis *shivers* Kurtis infamously groped Lara’s clearly exposed arms and bare midriff with the excuse of disarming her while also holding her at gunpoint with Lara uncharacteristically just sitting there and doing nothing about it. The scene has always honestly creeped me out but what’s even more disturbing is that shippers classify that as flirting? I promise you, if that’s how people flirt with you, you deserve better. And you also need to call the police. Further along in the mess of a game that is Angel of Darkness (sorry not sorry) Lara ambushes the Creep herself and guess what? She searches his body but, unlike her, he wears cargo pants and two layers of shirts and she is much quicker and efficient while frisking him (she searches his chest) LarTis (god even the ship name sounds horrible) shippers like to present it as some sort of proof that Lara likes him or, alternatively, bring it up as a counter argument when you tell them Kurtis was groping her using the tired phrase “WhY iS It OkAy WhEn A WomAn DoEs It???” and of course, under no circumstances is it okay for a woman to grope a total stranger either but, as I already explained, the two incidents play out completely dfferent. Just... No... No... Leave Kurtis back in 2003 where he belongs and let him fade into obscurity as the random creep that could absolutely not hold a spinoff series on his own (because that’s what they wanted to do with him... For some reason)

4. The “Cute Guys” in Tanzania

Quite often, when I see people wanting to deny Lara and Sam possibly being attracted to each other, they use one of Sam’s diary entries from TR13 as “proof”. In said document Sam says that while on a trip with Lara in Tanzania, all Lara wanted to do was explore the ruins around Mt. Kilimanjaro but Sam kept sidetracking her because she was more interested in chatting up fellow tourists along the way. The anti-gay Lara crowd use this as proof of Lara being straight / interested in men. This is dumb for two reasons. First, Sam specifically says that Lara only wanted to explore the ruins. It is Sam who makes an effort of talking to and “running into” the guys. She doesn’t mention Lara showing any interest in anything other than the ruins. If anything this proves that Lara is not interested in men lol. And, alternatively, yeah, she and Sam could be into guys... And girls... At the same time... Because bi people apparently exist!

5. Alex Something

What the fuck was Alex’s name from TR13?? I honestly forgot because he’s just another throwaway character (see what I mean? They have a really bad track record with male characters). So, as we saw throughout TR13, Alex has a huge crush on Lara and, literally, went out of his way to do something completely stupid and dangerous in hopes of impressing her because of course! Ultimately, this bright decision got him killed but at least he got a kiss on the cheeck from Lara as a last minute gift. Once again, the anti-gay brigade use this as evidence of Lara being into guys... Really..? The man is dying. And he died to get a screwdriver and a hammer, the least she can do is give him a kiss on the cheeck! She knew he liked her, she wasn’t reciprocating the feeling, she was just being nice to a dying person.

6. Sam

And, finally, Sam is the last person that was at some point considered as a love interest by the people behind the games that never came into fruition. So yeah, just like her male counterparts, miss Samantha Nishimura is a non-canon love interest herself.

In conclusion, ship Lara with whoever the fuck you want, just don’t try to use them as evidence to Lara “AlWayS HaViNg BEen This Or ThAt SexUAliTy” because she absolutely hasn’t.

The only labels that can be applied definitevly across all iterations of the character are: explorer, adventurer, survivalist and, of course, tomb raider

Anything else is non canon territory for now~

Kitty Pryde arrives in this team in the hopes of changing the world and soon is meet with people that are emotionally unstable or that should be lock up.  Logan, for example, is too unstable and workship Jean Grey as a dog with its master (and this is a comparison Kitty is not very fond for some reason) and Logan would kill for her, literally, he almost killed Scott, but, quick thinking and luck manages to make Scott turns the tidal wave on his attempt against his life.

And of course, Jean Grey herself took as her life mission to bully Kitty the best of her abilities. "See, Kitty, I´m prettier than you, sexier than you and powerful than you...you see? I´m a God and you´re nothing" Jean often would say and Kitty would just walk away.

Jean´s only friend is Nightcrawler who takes her plights as his own and offers a comforting shoulder. "That Kitty Pryde! How dare she exist? I hate her"

And Nightcrawler would smile politely and let her vent. "Jean, Jean, my friend, if you hate her so much why you don´t challenge her to combat?" and Jean looks as if Nightcrawler is a God sent to Earth.

"Yes, yes, I´ll destroy her...and finally, my life will be normal, this addiction will leave my body..." and she smirks deviously "I´m Jean Grey I can do anything...I can Kill Kitty" she fails to notice Nightcrawler is no longer smiling.

Jean challenged Kitty in Shiar land(their flight was surprisingly smooth but Jean felt a sense of foreboding each minute), ignoring the X-men and the others shiars, as this is the moment to settle an old score.

"Die, Kitty Pryde" Jean´s psychic powers are light on...only to be turned off by Kitty who snaps her fingers and now Jean is powerless. "What you did, you bitch?"

Kitty looks down at Jean Grey for a moment and then to Nightcrawler. "You really love chaos and piss off Pheonix don´t you?"

Nightcrawler nods his head and Zaorva rolls her head. And she looks at Jean again. "You´re so annoying and pathetic, I think Pheonix could take a new vessel, heck I´ll do one for free..." and then tentacles emerged from the ground wrapping her body "then again, let Pheonix decide what she wants, for now...be quiet"

And Jean couldn´t even scream as her ability to speak or make any sound was taken away. Kitty is a bit bored even more so when the Shiars show their respects to Zaorva, the Outer God of life, and Jean the vessel of Pheonix (if Pheonix still wants a vessel that calls LK BFF)

=Overview=

A loner, and a rather quiet one at that, Mizuku has little to no friends until, at age 6, he found himself entranced by the game Cardfight Vanguard. Through the game, he found more friends and became more social. Along his way he met a unit from Cray, called Tirua, a new idol from Bermuda Triangle, who made him into a Diffrider. But, unlike the rest, Mizuku wasn't completely taken over due to his most hidden secret, accesed through a mere mask.

[After suffering a rather shocking sixth loss, Mizuku's and Tirua's diffride bond broke, sending the idol back to Cray. This made Mizuku a total shut in like before Vanguard, even not wanting to come out of his room. One day, he got mailed a mysterious Deck and a strange device, which transported him into a completely different world with a completely different card game called Duel Monsters.]

=Appearance=

Mizuku is of average height, with light brown somewhat messy hair and blueish green eyes, which are rather cute on his face. When he wears his mask, his hair becomes a light gray in color with a brown hue to it. [Under the mask, new features appear. His right eye has a large scar over it, while the eye itself is all white and blind. The left eye on the other hand becomes a brighter green one. His hair also gains one offwhite streak and one red one, in order from left to right, above his eyes.]

His clothes change depending on the season. The main colors are blues and grays. At some point he also began including a black sleeveless jacket which belonged to a certain Osakan back in the day. However, when masked and going on stage as his other self, he wears an open red rather regal coat akin to a pirate's one with either a gold or silver trimmed tank top, black leather pants and boots with added metal to the soles. His mask is a simple concept, the top part of it is a skull-like shape while the bottom has a red respirator around its mouth. When Tirua takes over, a pink ribbon appears wrapped around Mizuku's left forearm. [When in Den City, Mizuku picks up a more bold style of casual clothes, now going with dark slightly ripped jeans, a tank top in deep blue over a gray shirt, the black jacket and a set of some belt accessories around his left bicep. As a student of Den City Private Academy, he does wear the male's uniform (navy blue jacket with school logo and pants, gray buttonup shirt and a dark blue tie) when attending school as a transfer student (has an orange clip on his tie to indicate this). His VRAINS avatar is much like his on-stage appearance, but instead of having a tank top and leather pants, he wears a skintight body suit like most generic in-VRAINS avatars, which is gold trimmed around the neck. There are some gold lines on his coat and the body suit which light up during the use of his Skill.]

=Personality=

Unmasked, Mizuku is shy, timid and rarely starts a conversation. But if its necessary to stand up for himself, he will do it to some extent. If he can't do it on his own or begins a Cardfight [or a Duel], he puts on his mask and things change from there. Now, Mizuku in his Django persona, he is much more open and confident. However, it does limit him by having a laughing fit if he sees his opponent do something anti-climactic. When Tirua takes over, she can make Mizuku behave rather princessy and like a spoiled brat, throwing a fit should she be denied what she wants. Overtime she does become less of a bratty person. [After losing Tirua, Mizuku becomes more serious about life, not really wanting to lose someone like he lost Tirua. But he does overcome this fear and ultimately becomes more confident in his unmasked self than before.]

=Abilities=

Mizuku as himself isn't all that skilled in a specific category, but he does show a passion for art even if he doesn't think his drawings are good. Overtime he also picks up Cardfighting [and Dueling] skills through Django, even extending to Deckbuilding. [In VRAINS, he becomes skilled in riding a D-Board and, thanks to Django, quickly learns the ins and outs of Duel Monsters.]

The news that hit Gosmein is something that no one could saw come, no one except, Kitty. Her powers are getting more and more attuned, to say the least.

"Jean Grey is spreading to all 4 winds that we´re a bunch of perverts and ...many people are questioning this. Genosha is talking about children´s safety and not sure if Magneto knows a joke or not" Psylocke complains and can feel Jean Grey laughing at them.

Kitty is looking at the news with little interestest. "What she wants is to make me bow? I won´t bow to something so pathetic as she." Kitty states with soft azzure eyes and changing the newspaper into something new.

Kurt Wagner is still there, along with Rogue, but unlike the X-men, the German is not showing to give Jean Grey many regards, however, his eyes are always on Kitty. Psylocke and many others saw those two walking together and wonders...how. How Kitty and Kurt get so close in such short of time.

Kitty looks left and speaks calmly. "I think many people are prone to believe in anything or just want a convenient excuse, Magneto wanted to enter in a war with Gosmein ever since we open our doors" Kitty states and only Kurt is in awe at this line " I can see right now that Magneto has weapons aimed to our location"

"WHAT?" everyone else said and Kitty looks at them as if nothing happens. "Don´t need to be afraid, this island won´t be destroyed...I won´t let it"

"But..." no one can make any question as Kitty rose from the chair and ask Kurt to come with her, and before leaving the room, she speaks to Rogue. "You think Jean Grey is unbeatable? No, she´s just a mortal like everyone else and we´ll stop her. But, one problem at a time"

And with that, Kitty and Kurt are gone. Rogue blinks at that. "Ok, See? This is a negative point for Gosmein...Found an island in honour of the Outer Gods? Lead to that"

"Rogue, be charming, not snarky!"

"Is outer gods!"

"So, what you´ll do with Jean Grey?" Kurt asked as Kitty is looking at left for a moment, until, her eyes gaze on what she was looking for, to anyone else, there´s only the ocean.

"At the moment? Nothing. She´s really that insignificant to me" And Suddenly, a few missiles can be seen coming to the island, courtesy of Magneto, however, Kitty stand her arm and the missiles stop and return to Genosha.

Magneto was sure his plan is brilliant, this is quickly proved wrong as the missiles return in a surprising speed and explode near Genosha causing a big sound that no one could ignore it.

The Kitty with soft azzure eyes is walking on the castle Magneto craft for himself and fearless, the woman is waving her hand as Magneto's power is no more and all the metallic elements are useless and for once in his life, Magneto is afraid.

"What are you?" Magneto asked trying for the last time to control metal and failing.

"I´m Kitty Pryde and Gosmein is my Island, if you try this again, I´ll do more than taking your power. Now, if you attack my home because you believe Jean´s lie...then you´re dumber than I thought"

And with that Kitty is gone.

And many people are wondering What Kitty Pryde truly is.

_______________________________________________________________ Jean is not pleased that Kitty Pryde is getting more praises. People are saying she´s far more powerful than Jean Grey. And Jean is seething. Logan is throwing praises at Jean, saying how she´s pretty and powerful.

Jean is ignoring him...until. "Logan, you love me, don´t you?"

"YES! more than anything"

"Good, then could you kill a person for me?"

"YES!"

"Kill Kurt Wagner, bring me his head and I´ll have the biggest pleasure to send it back to Kitty"

Atom: Rebirth Revives Ryan Choi’s Pre-Flashpoint Weird Science

While Ryan Choi is getting a fresh start as the Atom in DC’s brave new world, the one-shot “Justice League of America: The Atom: Rebirth” by Steve Orlando and Andy MacDonald sets the tone by invoking some of Ray Palmer’s most famous adventures — and in so doing hints at the shape of things yet unseen in the revised timeline.

Ray Palmer, Atom Emeritus

Much as in “Blue Beetle,” where inventor (and, in another life, former Beetle) Ted Kord mentors Jaime Reyes, the “Rebirth” special establishes Ray Palmer as the originator of the Atom identity though he passes it off straightaway to Ryan Choi, introduced as Palmer’s best pupil and research assistant at Ivy University. This seems to be DC’s go-to device for honoring classic heroes while passing the torch to a younger generation, in so doing also bolstering racial and ethnic diversity across its line. It is, perhaps, not a perfect solution, but it’s a far sight better than sweeping the new characters aside in favor of the originals, as had been done earlier in the decade, and which resulted in Choi’s controversial death pre-“Flashpoint.”

In Orlando and MacDonald’s story, the device works well enough, creating an intriguing new relationship between Palmer and Choi. Choi has been Professor Palmer’s research assistant for several years before Palmer reveals his identity as the Atom. From this point on, Choi’s role transforms into that of an assistant to a superhero — although, with Palmer’s research-based missions, the change in duties is minimal.

Not many other heroes need concern themselves with “ruining the data.”

Eventually, though, Ray gets himself stranded in the micro verse, and it’s up to Ryan, his trusted assistant and the only other person on Earth who understands the science, to retrieve his mentor and save the universe.

The very first image of the “Rebirth” special calls back to the classic (and very strange) “Sword of the Atom” miniseries by Jan Strnad and Gil Kane from 1983, possibly (hopefully?) setting the stage for Ryan’s adventures in the microverse.

Ryan was involved in a few weird adventures in his pre-“Rebirth” life, as chronicled in the excellent “All-New Atom” series by Gail Simone and John Byrne that first introduced him to readers. In that incarnation, Choi was older, a new professor at Ivy University who had corresponded with, but never met, Palmer. There, the small college town found itself breaking down at the quantum level, thanks to Palmer’s constant bending of the laws of nature, with severe effects on physics, logic and causality. Choi donned Palmer’s spare Atom suit in an effort to get reality back on track, ultimately uncovering the villain Chronos’ hand in the conflict.

Later, he was very straightforwardly murdered by Deathstroke and his team of evil Titans.

During “Convergence,” though, Tom Peyer and Steve Yeowell brought the weird back in a big way. The two-issue “Convergence: The Atom” series starred a pre-“Flashpoint” Ray Palmer seemingly on the verge of a mental breakdown, his only remaining superpower the ability to make one hand really big. That hand is, essentially, haunted by Choi, and Palmer allows an opponent to chop it off so Ryan can form it into a new body.

For better or worse, that is not the Choi that appears post-“Rebirth.” Just a bit of backstory flavor.

Between Atoms

Adam Cray, who lived and died pre-“Flashpoint” as Palmer’s secret successor in the Suicide Squad, appears as Choi’s roommate at Ivy. Given that he does not appear to be a serious student and several years pass in the course of the issue, it’s unclear where he is at the conclusion of the story.

I Smell A Mystery

Palmer’s offhand remark to “Let Jean know the alimony check will be late” neatly unloads a detail that is not immediately important to the story at hand, but provides longtime readers with significant clues about where this version of Ray Palmer is with his life — and the crimes not yet committed by Jean Loring.

It makes sense, of course, that the post-“Rebirth” timeline would have no room for the events of “Identity Crisis,” in which Loring murdered Sue Dibny, wife of the Elongated Man, nor the weekly event “52,” when Ralph Dibny met his end. There’s just not room for them.

But if that’s the case, and if the “Rebirth” universe is meant to restore the heart of DC Comics that had diminished during the New 52, where are Ralph and Sue? Their only appearances since the conclusion of “52,” when they embarked upon their after-lives as supernatural detectives, were in Gail Simone and Dale Eaglesham’s “Secret Six,” in which Ralph had been working undercover and both had returned to the land of the living. Heck, the pair weren’t even together for most of the storyline, and Ralph was unrecognizable until the title’s final few issues.

Ralph and Sue Dibny are back, so where’s their Rebirth series?

Whether corporeal or ghost detectives, it’s past time one of comics’ best couples is given new life. With “Atom: Rebirth” now all but confirming the events of “Identity Crisis” as wiped away, maybe they’ll be among the next wave of heroes to make their Rebirth presence known.

Kitty is a famous singer and recently won a grammy being the second mutant artist to won such award, however, fame comes with a few problems and of them are crazy fans wanting to kill, well, she can phase through any bullet but since she does represent Excalibur Meggan and Jaime created a protocol.

Kitty can´t complain as the last attack someone gets hurt thanks to a crazy fan who thought artist X is better than Kitty and deserve the award, to everyone but Kitty´s shock, the person was minded controlled by Jean Grey.

Betsy, after learning this, quit the X-men(much to her disappointment as she is enjoying Scott´s company and Jean´s jealousy) and now Works fully on Excalibur. Jean was expelled and sent to prison, of course, no prison can stop her and her little lap dog. Betsy and Scott may go after them…eventually.

Kitty is swearing she will take this protocol seriously. And Betsy making some calls and asking favours get a bodyguard for Kitty, a man named only Nightcrawler, blue, fury and seems deadly.

“Do you have a name?” Kitty asked once the man gives his curriculum as protection and killing come to hand and hand in his case.

“Name?” Kurt is taken back by this question and Kitty Wonders why(she has a clue, many parents leave their mutant babies to die and never give a name to them) “Kurt Wagner” her heart swell with sympathy as she has the neat impression he named himself in the spot.

Well, no one dares to hurt Kitty with Nightcrawler around and the woman is very grateful for his work, even if said work consists of him sitting and only looking scary.

“Hey!” Kitty said one day “I have a thank you present for you” She then hands him a book written in German about Bavaria, he did mention that place often but never seem to know more about this part of Germany. “It may not be the same thing as the real thing, but, you deserve to know more about Bavaria”

Kurt is touched as this is the first present he ever received. And suddenly this makes his resolve stronger. After a concert Kitty did, Jean and Logan show up ready to end Kitty´s life for good.

Kurt has no problem in killing Jean Grey and Wolverine, in fact, on the later, he takes a certain pleasure in doing that. He imagined Jimmy and this make the killing way more exciting.

“That was horrible” Kitty confessed and looks a bit scared and impressed with Kurt, she held no love for Jean and Logan but did they deserve to die in such manner? Then again, they would have killed in the same fashion. “You save! While it was in the bloodiest way Possible”

“Sorry, I carry away, are you hurt? I saw Jean using her powers on you”

“Oh, you killed before she could have made any damage, you know, I think I will take vacations from the music business”

“A pity, I think I became your biggest fan. I like the song Blue moon, black blood”

“Thank you, everyone else thought that was my creepiest song ever” Kitty didn´t smile as even in presence of a dead Jean Grey she can´t smile. Kitty makes some calls to solve this and Nightcrawler tries to calm her down as best he can, overall, in his mind the night was a great success.
