WIP Wednesday
I have been posting a LOT about Operation Groundhog AU, so instead today I am going to post a bit of Valley AU. Just to remind y'all (and myself) that I'm working on other fics, too, LOL
Maverick pauses, listening to the rumbling getting louder.
That’s an engine, he thinks, and dives under cover into the undergrowth, hidden by the large leaves of a bush and a downed tree. The engine gets louder--a jet, for sure. Subsonic, and too small to be a Felon. Not an F-18, either, and Maverick lets himself feel a moment of intense relief. He has no idea if the others can follow him here, really, but--well. He doesn’t want them to.
The engine gets softer, and then louder again--circling like a vulture. Did the pilot spot him? Maverick doesn’t know, isn’t sure what to king about any of this. Surely if it knew where he was, it would have started shooting by now--
He breathes for a moment, as the jet gets closer, and then inches towards an opening in his cover--slowly, slowly peering out. The angle’s back, but he can just barely make out a stretch of sky, and the jet circles around for a third time--
Maverick feels his blood turn to ice in his veins.
That’s not any sort of jet currently in circulation, he thinks, stupidly. That’s an F-8.
That’s an F-8, and it’s looking for him.
If asked later, Maverick wouldn’t be able to explain why he did what he did next, couldn’t explain the way adrenaline shot through him, the clawing, choking fear that swamped him, certainly would not be able to explain the way he knew, somehow, suddenly, that he did not want that F-8 to spot him.
Which is why what he does next is so fucking stupid.
He runs.

USS Oriskany (CVA-34)
Navy pilot Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Denny Earl, with both legs shattered by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire, successfully lands his A-4 Skyhawk attack plane aboard the Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin, 20 October 1967. The nylon emergency barrier assures the wounded pilot that he will not have to make more than one attempt to land his plane. Photographed by PHC Neal Crowe. Official U.S. Navy Photograph

1967, LTJG Denny Earl completed his bomb run and returned to USS Oriskany even though both his legs had been shattered when North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire hit his A-4 Skyahwk. He was able to make a perfect landing but a barricade had been erected as a precaution.

On top, the customer...

Vought F8-J CRUSADER from VF-191 takes on fuel from...
Tumblr media
...A-7B CORSAIR II from VA-155, both embarked aboard USS ORISKANY for a deployment to Vietnam in 1972-73.
The A-7 is carrying a "buddy store", a fuel tank that included a hose reel and drogue along with 3 more external fuel tanks. With this setup, any aircraft could be a tanker. The tanker pilot streams the drogue and hose and the customer flies up, makes the connection with his refueling probe and takes whatever fuel the tanker schedules for that offload.
Having even this relatively small amount of giveaway fuel in the air was very useful. These tankers could "top off" aircraft too heavily loaded with weapons to be launched with a full load. Also, they could offer a pilot having trouble getting aboard enough gas for a few more passes at the deck, saving him from at best a trip to a divert airfield on the beach and at worst an ejection into the sea.

Based on certain patches, Maverick's leather flight jacket originally belonged to his dad
OR since ANJ-3 (Army Navy Jacket 3) was standardized as the G-1 jacket in 1947 and has stayed the same, it could be that Maverick had patches from his dad and sew them when he received his G-1 on the first day of his Aviation Indoctrination program.
