It's been a long time since large herds of bison roamed what is now Treaty 7 territory in Alberta, but Clayton Whitney, manager of the Tsuut'ina Nation's buffalo paddock, can see the impact reintroduction projects are having on the bison population and the surrounding wildlife.
"It's amazing how much animals want to come on this side of the fence with the bison," he told The Current. "We get everything from cougars and bears and moose and deer, elk."

The Best News of Last Week - June 6, 2023
1. Biden orders 20-year ban on oil, gas drilling around tribal site in New Mexico
Tumblr media
Hundreds of square miles in New Mexico will be withdrawn from further oil and gas production for the next 20 years on the outskirts of Chaco Culture National Historical Park that tribal communities consider sacred, the Biden administration ordered Friday.
The new order from Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland applies to public lands and associated mineral rights within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of the park. It does not apply to entities that are privately, state- or tribal-owned. Existing leases won’t be impacted either.
2. Groundbreaking Israeli cancer treatment has 90% success rate
Tumblr media
An experimental treatment developed at Israel's Hadassah-University Medical Center has a 90% success rate at bringing patients with multiple myeloma into remission.
The treatment is based on genetic engineering technology. They have used a genetic engineering technology called CAR-T, or Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy, which boosts the patient’s own immune system to destroy the cancer. More than 90% of the 74 patients treated at Hadassah went into complete remission, the oncologists said.
3. Federal Judge Makes History in Holding That Border Searches of Cell Phones Require a Warrant
Tumblr media
With United States v. Smith, a district court judge in New York made history by being the first court to rule that a warrant is required for a cell phone search at the border, “absent exigent circumstances”. For a century, the Supreme Court has recognized a border search exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement.
4. Indigenous-led bison repopulation projects are helping the animal thrive again in Alberta
Tumblr media
Indigenous-led efforts are reintroducing bison to their ancestral lands in Alberta, bringing back an iconic species that was nearly extinct. These reintroduction projects, such as the one led by the Tsuut'ina Nation, have witnessed the positive impact on the bison population and the surrounding wildlife.
The historical decline of bison numbers was due to overhunting and government policies that forced Indigenous peoples onto reserves. These initiatives aim to restore ecological integrity while fostering spiritual and cultural connections with the land and animals. Successful results have been observed in projects like Banff National Park, where the bison population has grown from 16 to nearly 100, providing inspiration for future wilding efforts.
5. Breakthrough in disease affecting one in nine women
Tumblr media
Sydney researchers have made a world-first leap forward that could change the treatment of endometriosis and improve the health of women living with the painful and debilitating disease. Researchers from Sydney's Royal Hospital for Women have grown tissue from every known type of endometriosis, observing changes and comparing how they respond to treatments.
It means researchers will be able to vary treatments from different types of endometriosis, determining whether a woman will need fertility treatments.
6. Latvia just elected the first openly gay head of state in Europe
Tumblr media
The country’s parliament elected Edgars Rinkēvičs to be its next president, Reuters reported prime minister Krišjānis Kariņš saying.
Rinkēvičs publicly came out as gay in November 2014, posting on Twitter: “I proudly announce I am gay… Good luck all of you.” In a second tweet at the time, he spoke about improving the legal status of same-sex relationships, saying Latvia needed to create a legal framework for all kinds of partnerships.
7. France bans short haul flights
Tumblr media
The introduction of France’s short-haul flight ban has renewed calls for Europe to cut down on journeys that could be made by train. Last week France officially introduced its ban on short-haul flights.
The final version of the law means that journeys which can be taken in under 2.5 hours by train can’t be taken by plane. There also needs to be enough trains throughout the day that travellers can spend at least eight hours at their destination.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
November 21st - Shaman
Born from a great line of Sarcee mystics of the Tsuut'ina Nation, Michael Twoyoungmen was not interested in learning his grandfather's arts.  He chose instead to study medicine and went on to become an accomplished doctor and surgeon. When his wife Katheryn became sick with a rare and terminal illness, Twoyoungmen vowed to find a cure for her by any means necessary.  Sadly he failed and his wife passed away.  To make matters worse, Katheryn’s death created a rift between Dr. Twoyoungmen and his daughter, Elizabeth.
Having lost his wife and become estranged from his daughter, Twoyoungmen wandered through the woods of northern Canada in search of a new path for himself.  Here he encountered the spirit of his grandfather who taught him the scared arts of Sacree Magic.
Whit honing his skills as a sorcerer, Twoyoungmen encountered a woodland goddess who was in distress.  Twoyoungmen offered her aide and ended up helping the goddess deliver her child, Narya.
To ensure the infant’s survival, Twoyoungmen bound her to the lands of Canada, thus allowing her to assume human form.  He raised the rapidly maturing Narya as his own daughter, and both were soon recruited into Alpha Flight as Shaman and Snowbird.  Twoyoungman’s decision to participate as a member of Alpha Flight was primarily to ensure that the powerful Narya would not be misused nor taken advantage of.
As Shaman, Twoyoungman would go on to have many adventures alongside Alpha Flight.  Soon, Narya was old enough, strong and wise enough to no longer need his protection and guidance.  His daughter, Elizabeth, would go on to become apt magic user in her own right and the two were eventually able to reconcile.
More recently, Dr. Twoyoungman accepted a position teaching indigenous sorcery at The Strange Academy.
Shaman first appeared in the pages of X-Men Vol. 1 #120 (1979).

Yexyexéscen (also spelled "Yuh-hai-has-kun") means The Mountain of the Spiral Road. This Indigenous name was bestowed upon Mount Robson by the Texqakallt, the earliest inhabitants of the area. It refers to the mountain's distinct rock bands visible in this image captured on the shores of Berg Lake. Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada. As such I also want to recognize that I live, work and play on Treaty 7 territory, the traditional lands of the Stoney Nakoda Nations: Wesley, Chiniki, and Bearspaw; the Blackfoot Confederacy: the Piikani, Kainai, and Siksika; and the Tsuut'ina First Nations. Treaty 7 territory is shared with the Métis Nation of Alberta (Region III). #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay #NIPD2021 — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3xRTM9Z

All want to be understood few wish to understand
Tumblr media
The grim truth about the News in Canada is that Canadians, need to know more about  about Brexit, what US Congress is up to and what did Dinky Donnie do today, than they do the Indigenous reality in Canada.
Now It’s Election Time in Canada. You'll hear all the Politicians debating  the “Major Issues”. You may hear the occasional First Nations, Inuit and Métis “Issues”discussed. The issue will be seen in relation to pipelines and howIndigenous Rights affect business interests. Very little will be said about rights to safe drinking water, decent housing, missing First Nations women, education, healthy diet or even human rights.
We’ll receive news about Human Rights elsewhere, Hong Kong or North Korea. As far as Fires in Brazil it’s all about the environment world wide. Who the fuck do we think live in the burned down world heritage rain forests all worry about? It is their whole world right now and in living color. Their “rights” conflict with business interests, but far less would be said if only the indigenous inhabitants were affected
Try not to be like the Political shills running in this election.Take time to learn what it means to be an “issue”. Don’t set a time limit, keep learning.
In 2016, 1.6 million people identified as Indigenous in Canada. The issues aren't abstract. Start to learn what first nations think their “issues” are. Start to understand by knowing who. Take some time and seek information on your own. Search names, find places, find out about these lives as they are. No need to think you have to understand by Election Day 2019.
Please seek the truth for yourself. Sometimes we need labels to understand. Here is a list of first nations in Canada. Knowledge is the power behind change. Use the internet and libraries. You can even contact band offices for information. Please learn, few understand the First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities of Canada.
The list is not comprehensive, it does provide insight into the indigenous societies, and cultural ties in Canada. Start anywhere and ask questions for yourself.

A house for healing: treating addiction through tradition on Tsuut'ina Nation | CBC News The founders of Eagletail House Society hope the space can lead the way for others like it In December 2019, Stephanie Crowchild hit rock bottom. She had been trapped in a cycle of addiction and was in jail when a member of Child and Family Services (CFS) served her apprehension papers for her four children. Two weeks ago, Crowchild and the same CFS employee sat in ceremony and prayed together at Eagletail House Society, a new centre on Tsuu T'ina Nation, which focuses on intergenerational healing through spiritual and traditional practices. "For me, it was like this 360 moment," said Crowchild. Intergenerational trauma is an area of focus for Eagletail House. In her journey with addiction, Crowchild realized that much of what she struggled with stemmed from what happened to her father and grandparents, who are residential school survivors. The acknowledgement of that pain, but also the wisdom of her ancestors is encapsulated at Eagletail House, the place where her grandparents — known in the community as healers — carried out their own practices. Crowchild said she remembers community members coming to her grandparents' house seeking healing and guidance. "We can't let a home stay dormant, because of the spirit of a home itself," said Crowchild's father Hal Eagletail. Eagletail, who is an elder advisor at Poundmaker's Lodge treatment centre, is familiar with the benefits that his culture's traditional healing practices can bring to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Eagletail said that homes like the one his daughter created are an exciting opportunity for those eager to participate in reconciliation efforts. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/tsuut-ina-nation-stephanie-crowchild-hal-eagletail-1.6370991 https://www.instagram.com/p/CaqdRm6pVln/?utm_medium=tumblr

From her family ranch on the Tsuut'ina Nation in Treaty 7, Indigenous designer, artist, maker, and horsewoman Livia Manywounds makes one-of-a-kind formal clothing. She began to sew in junior high and was admitted to a fashion school in New York, but she was unable to go due to financial constraints.
When she became a caregiver for her mother after she was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, her creativity was reignited. She explains, "I needed something to do because I had to take time off work." “I pulled out my beads and needles and began beading, followed by sewing.” Manywounds sat beside her mother's bedside and buried herself in her work. “I began by posting items on the internet, and soon after, I began to receive orders.”

Tsuut'ina First Nation closes schools, admin offices after COVID-19 case confirmed
Because of COVID-19 detection at a community event, Tsuut'ina First Nation has closed its schools and its administrative offices.
In a notice posted to its Facebook pages, signed by the chief and council, late Monday night, the First Nation notified residents of the closure.
"Because of such a recent community gathering, a COVID-19 infection has been reported, we have chosen to go beyond and above the protocol to protect citizens of the country," the notice reads.
It did not say how many individuals could have been exposed.
Another alert, posted on the Facebook page of the nation's emergency management, mentioned anybody who attended a Sunday memorial feast is needed to self-isolate for 14 days and be screened for COVID-19.
It said those who attended a wake or funeral on Monday are needed to monitor themselves for 10 days for indications of COVID-19, but at this point they decided not need to isolate themselves.
Members of the nation can call 403-258-4830 to arrange for research to be conducted.

Colonialism, land and reconciliation between immigrants and Indigenous peoples explored in art exhibition - AlbertaPrimeTimes.com
Source: CJWE
A new art installation exploring colonialism around Calgary is the result of three years of relationship building between artist Jin-me Yoon and Tsuut’ina and Mohkinstsis (Calgary) based artists.
According to Yoon, the upcoming fall exhibit of her installation Untunnelling Vision is about the relationship between land and people, and the histories that both hold.
“I think we have our own reconciliation to do as immigrants because we often come to Canada with these big histories, and so there's different points of connection to make,” said Yoon.
The installation is made up of video, photographs, photo-sculptural elements, and objects. It features a number of Treaty 7 locations, including the southwest ring road construction site and a film set on Tsuut’ina Nation erected for the 2008 Canadian film Passchendaele about the First World War battle.
The installation was informed by themes of war and colonialism from Yoon’s Korean ancestry, and her experience as an immigrant in Canada.
“My work is never about Indigenous peoples in a direct sense, so when people say ‘You always talk about colonialism, but there's no Indigenous people in your work.’ I say, ‘But I'm colonialism. The way I understand land is colonial’,” said Yoon.
Unlike other installations where Yoon would ask long-time family or friends to work with her, Untunnelling Vision included the experiences of young artists that Yoon previously did not know.
One of those new faces was seth cardinal dodginghorse, a Tsuut’ina Nation member and multimedia artist who had a personal connection to some of the locations featured in the exhibit.
He became involved in the project with Yoon three years ago after responding to a call out for Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) artists.
“In my own artistic practice a lot of the focus of my work has been talking about the history of this land and how, even recently, it was affected by colonialism,” said cardinal dodginghorse.
He and his family were forcibly moved off of their land six years ago for the construction of the ring road, which he said has made his art more politically charged.
“Knowing the history of areas and home, and place, and land, is pretty important. So it was nice working with Jin-me where that was an important thing to practice,” said cardinal dodginghorse.
Both Yoon and cardinal dodginghorse said respecting boundaries, and the need for Yoon to not speak over Indigenous experiences was a necessary aspect of their working together.
“The really beautiful young people and also the cardinal dodginghourse family, who are Tsuut'ina, have generously allowed me to make this work. And it doesn't try to tell their story of their land. It's me witnessing and being alongside and telling you from my perspective,” said Yoon.
During the production of Untunnelling Vision, cardinal dodginghorse and Hanum Yoon-Henderson, Yoon’s son, led a workshop of the other young artists to improvise acoustic sounds, using left-over items from the Passchendaele film site.
According to cardinal dodginghorse, the land, which had been leased for almost 100 years by the Canadian Armed Forces for training, which included launching rockets, grenades, and other munitions, many of which were left unexploded, has not been maintained.
“It looks very much like a ‘90’s apocalyptic movie,” said cardinal dodginghorse.
The acoustic experiments, which later became part of the improvised score for the exhibit’s video, were conducted in a tunnel built for the ring road, which features prominently in the exhibit.
According to cardinal dodginghorse, building the tunnel resulted in the loss of the natural landscape, with trees being knocked down and natural springs drying up.
He says the tunnel is a personal and symbolic reminder of colonialism disguised as development.
“Now, the Tsuut'ina people are kind of hidden and tucked away under the ring road. So as people are driving to get to work and commute, people from the nation would be driving underneath in this tunnel, underneath the ring road,” said cardinal dodginghorse.
For these reasons, he hopes that audience members to the fall exhibit will include people from Tsuut’ina, residents of Calgary, with different viewpoints and values than what would make up the average liberal arts audience.
“I think it'd be nice to see the average Albertan or the average Calgarian at those things [the exhibit locations], and see things that challenge them a bit more,” said cardinal dodginghorse.
The exhibition is presented by M:ST Performative Art and TRUCK Contemporary Art and runs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 12 at TRUCK Contemporary Art (2009 10 Avenue SW, Mohkinstsis|Calgary). For more information, visit www.truck.ca
