The Credibility of Social Media
After exploring and examining the previous questions about gender, disinformation and fake news, we have finally come to the most crucial one. Can social media be trusted 100% by its users?
The composition of social media seems like a new world. The platforms that provide the data, the people who share it and the people who receive it. It all seems to make sense and work together. Before I ask this question, there is an opportunity that triggers my thinking. While I was using tiktok to download this video, I suddenly noticed an option next to it labeled promotion. After I clicked on it to check it out I did see that I could spend money to choose the number of people to promote, etc. I tried to promote one of my videos for 30 RMB. Although the number of likes wasn't great, it was much higher than before.
With the high growth of social media these days, people are very dependent on it. There is a lot of content in social media and a lot to choose from. From my own experience, I believe that the push behind social media content is not only based on simple likes and views.Pop et al. in the article "The impact of social media influencers on travel decisions: The role of trust in The impact of social media influencers on travel decisions: The role of trust in consumer decision journey", Pop et al. mention that endorsers use their personalities to shape a product or service and further communicate it to the target audience for marketing purposes. It can also be seen as a partnership between brands and content creators (Pop et al., 2021, p825). What can be queried or tweeted by social media is the result of curation. The operation behind the capital directs the social media professionals to output some content to lead the user's mindset and finally achieve the goal. In my experience, for example, the capital can be pushed at a better price to achieve a large marketing impact.
The composition of social media is planned and manipulated. The conclusion of this study is not to create fear, but rather to empower users to use their judgment to discern the truth of the content. Like disinformation and fake news, social media has an impact on people not just by infiltrating their daily lives, but by changing the way they think in order to profit from it.
