horangi headcanon list part 2
as written by a native korean
part 1 here
horangi viscerally hates k-pop
it’s just... really funny that way. people are like oh you’re korean? like jungkook from bts? like the girl kpop bands? that’s all i know btw. and he just bites them
on that note i think könig plays antifragile by lesserafim while working out and horangi has to stop himself from throttling him
this one’s a joke people would mention the north/south thing more
anyway onto more serious character backstory building HCs
horangi went to a shitty commercial high school and/or dropped out and joined the military early
if the gambling addiction developed during middle school, he may have decided that he needed to make money as soon in his life as possible; an allowance, however heavy, and part time jobs for students wouldn’t be enough.
in that case the best option for him would be to not go to an ordinary high school and instead go on to a commercial high school, which is a type of high school specialized in teaching their students business knowledge related to a specific field ie engineering, farming, fishing, hair and makeup, accounting, tourism, etc. they teach much less of anything involved with the university/college admission process, and so horangi would’ve given that up as an option.
if the gambling addiction developed during high school, he dropped out during high school so that he could work more and instead focused on getting a GED. education is big here; his family would not physically let him get away with not having that kind of qualification.
speaking of his family they would not have approved of these decisions at all; perception around commercial high schools are very bad.
related to the above headcanon; he joined the military as young as he physically could
that would be age 18. not korean age, international age 18. this is still within high school age- 3rd year of high school to be precise- but he would’ve dipped way beforehand.
depending on when his birthday is, because of course we don’t even know that, he could’ve joined as early as january or february- before people his age would’ve even begun their last year in high school.
he does get some shit for being so young and also having dropped out from high school, much less be in a university/college learning curriculum like everyone else
side note; korean AMABs, if they went on to university or college, usually take a break from school for 2 years after finishing anywhere from 1~4 semesters, the lesser the better, in order to serve their mandatory time unless they do not qualify physically to do so. in that case they do community service of various kinds instead but we ain’t talking about that. i don’t know any AMAB high school dropouts so i’m not sure how they’d do it, but they are definitely  the minority.
leading on from that one, he did not have a very accepting time in the military.
if your CO is younger than you that fucking sucks. and he’d be younger than literally everyone around him, even if he was deciding to just serve in the military for the rest of his life.
especially with the queer thing. we are on the website that we are and i am taking for granted that headcanons come with this guy is attracted to guys
korea’s still pretty homophobic. i don’t know personally any amab korean queers that have served in the military enough to expand upon this unfortunately but just from the age thing he wasn’t exactly immediately accepted into shit.
but he’s just that good. who cares if they don’t accept him. bitches.

I'm thinking of that last post I just reblogged, about vacations, and I wanted to throw out my plan I have for doing interesting stuff on no budget. The only thing I think you require for this is the willingness to try something different.
Check out your local tourist bureau for your city/state/country. See what kind of brochures and stuff you can get a hold of. My state's tourism department will ship books and brochures of things to do for free. I get everything they have once a year and the wife and I winnow through it.
Check out your local chamber of commerce. Not as useful but it has a few gems occasionally.
Check out your local parks department. They'll often have events going on of all kinds.
Check out your local college/university, especially if they have a performing arts school. I go to free concerts all the time at one that's just blocks from my house.
Check out the local library. They'll have events going on and they deserve the support.
Use Google Maps. Google itself might be kind of crap for searching for anything anymore but Google Maps isn't half bad. Just type something like "[Name of City] Museum" and you'll get some results. I've also just randomly scrolled around an area I'm interested in and seen what pops up. Found several interesting restaurants and museums that way.
Get on mailing lists for all of the above. If you're worried about spam, you can always set up a second email address for just these.
I'll say that I've seen websites, such as MeetUp, recommended before but I've never had great luck. I think part of that is the state I live in isn't really well known for clubs and such so I don't have a lot of experience with that.
In some cases, you can't get away with paying for something. You gotta research a little though and sometimes you can get it cheaper or even free. An example would be that most of the museums in my area cost to enter but they also often have reduced admission days or even the occasional free day. The local zoo used to discount admission after a certain time. I also know that our local blood bank gave out tickets to things for donations. Check out the library. I know ours have what they call experience passes which are little passes you can check out that give four people admission to a local attraction.
The other thing is be willing to go somewhere and just walk around and hang out. Festivals are good for this. My state has a lot of agriculture based festivals so sometimes it's just going to hang out at the local peach festival for a day and see someplace new. They'll often have free entertainment, like bands and such, going on as well. It's just a matter of being willing to get out and experience something coupled with a bit of research.

Do you have any recommendations for building a list like the one you shared for free & inexpensive arts things in NYC but for other cities? Like, did you just Google all that stuff, or are there more efficient ways to look? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm interested in making one for my city but other than Googling I'm not sure where to start. Thanks in advance!
Hi! Most of the information I shared in that post was actually pulled directly from a calendar I've been keeping updated since I was in undergrad 😅 I was accepted to my college as part of this arts scholar program and had classes and assignments that required me to go to museums, plays, etc. I started keeping track of free and reduced days so I could save a little money (or entice friends/family to come along and keep me company), and have maintained it since then!
Aside from just googling museums in your area, I'd check out Time Out for your city if there is one - virtually every one should have a guide for free and reduced admission days. Lots of cities will also have community calendars or tourism sites where that info is compiled. University websites are also a great resource, they'll have info on student perks and you can follow the links to see what else is offered to non-students. Library websites too!
Your city/state/province/country (not sure where you are lol) might also have programs that offer free & reduced admission for certain people - one that comes to mind is Museums for All, which is run by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and offers free/reduced admission for people on SNAP/EBT. These sites will have extensive lists of museums that participate in these programs.
Hope that helps!

Recently Viewed: Dreaming of the Meridian Arc and She is me, I am her
Today, following an interminably long absence (thanks in large part to the cancellation of this year’s Japan Cuts, which absolutely devastated me), I finally returned to Japan Society—my favorite venue in New York City—for a double feature:
Dreaming of the Meridian Arc
To be perfectly honest, I went into this expecting a middling jidaigeki at best—generic, formulaic, and unimaginative. I was therefore delighted to discover that it was more subversive and postmodern than the standard fare, akin to Kazuo Mori’s Vendetta of a Samurai (albeit to a lesser degree).
Tumblr media
Like that Kurosawa-penned hidden gem, this film features a modern-day framing device, in which a group of mild-mannered city officials struggle to produce a historical epic about local folk hero Tadataka Ino—the cartographer that, in 1821, created the first accurate map of Japan. When their hired writer discovers that their subject actually died three years prior to the officially recorded completion of his life’s work, however, our protagonists must untangle fact from fiction in order to find the human “truth” behind the legend.
The result, for better or worse, is a tearjerker as precisely calculated as a trigonometry equation. While the visual style practically screams “made-for-TV movie” (whenever something suitably melodramatic occurs, for example, every character gets a dedicated reaction shot), the cast certainly delivers where it counts; the actors obviously had a blast playing their dual roles (a gimmick that owes a greater debt to The Wizard of Oz than it does to Tadashi Imai’s Bushido: The Cruel Code of the Samurai, I think).
Tumblr media
Ultimately, despite its slight themes and modest ambitions (its intention to promote tourism couldn't be more transparent), Dreaming of the Meridian Arc is a charming, funny, and effortlessly entertaining diversion.
She is me, I am her
This COVID-themed anthology film is a master class in minimalism. The introductory vignette alone is worth the price of admission. Its story—which revolves around a trio college friends reconnecting over FaceTime after twenty years of radio silence—unfolds almost entirely in tight closeups, elegantly conveying the claustrophobia of quarantine-era existence. As the protagonists acknowledge, confront, and resolve the underlying tensions and unspoken resentments that shattered their relationship in the first place, however, the frame gradually widens out, revealing the empty space surrounding them—thus emphasizing their loneliness and isolation.
Tumblr media
The remaining three shorts are equally compelling, tackling such poignant and relevant topics as unemployment, homelessness, prostitution, broken dreams, and the unanticipated disruption of everyday routines that people take for granted. Writer/director Mayu Nakamura personifies the indie spirit, accomplishing more than the average Hollywood blockbuster with significantly fewer resources. After all, producing a work of transcendent beauty doesn’t require a huge budget; you just need a simple premise, a small cast of relatable characters, a handful of real locations—and a clear enough creative vision to weave all of those disparate elements together.

Understanding Different Visa Types: A Comprehensive Guide
Tumblr media
Navigating through the intricate landscape of U.S. immigration can be a complex task, especially when it comes to understanding the array of visa types available. Whether you're planning a short visit, seeking education, looking to work, or aiming to reside permanently in the United States, selecting the correct visa type is crucial. This comprehensive guide demystifies the various visa types, helping you to understand and choose the right one for your specific needs.
Nonimmigrant Visas: For Temporary Visits
Nonimmigrant visas are designed for individuals intending to stay in the United States on a temporary basis. Each type of nonimmigrant visa caters to different purposes and requirements:
Tourist and Business Visas (B1/B2):
Purpose: The B1 visa is typically for business-related visits, while the B2 visa is for tourism, visiting family or friends, and medical treatments.
Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate their intent to return to their home country after their visit and show they have the means to support themselves during their stay.
Student Visas (F1, M1):
F1 Visa: Issued to students attending an academic program or English Language Program at a U.S. college or university.
M1 Visa: For students enrolled in vocational or other non-academic programs, excluding language training.
Requirements: Proof of admission in an approved institution, sufficient financial support, and intent to return home after studies are essential.
Work Visas (H1B, L1, O1, etc.):
H1B Visa: For individuals in specialty occupations requiring a higher education degree or its equivalent.
L1 Visa: For intra-company transferees who work in managerial positions or have specialized knowledge.
O1 Visa: For individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement in their field.
Requirements: Typically require sponsorship from a U.S. employer and evidence of qualifications for the specific visa category.
Exchange Visitor Visas (J1):
Purpose: Designed for participants in exchange programs, including students, scholars, and those on cultural missions.
Requirements: Must be sponsored by a private sector or government program and demonstrate the intent to return home post-exchange.
Understanding the specific requirements and limitations of these nonimmigrant visa types is crucial for ensuring compliance with U.S. immigration laws and a successful stay in the United States.
Immigrant Visas: For Permanent Residence
Immigrant visas are for individuals who intend to live permanently in the United States. Unlike nonimmigrant visas, they offer a path to permanent residency and potentially citizenship. Here's an overview of the key categories:
Family-Sponsored Visas:
Purpose: These visas are for family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs). They are divided into immediate relative visas and family preference visas.
Requirements: U.S. sponsors must file a petition (Form I-130) and provide proof of the relationship. The availability of visas in this category depends on the relationship to the U.S. citizen or LPR and the country of origin.
Employment-Based Visas:
Categories: Ranging from EB-1 to EB-5, these visas cater to different types of workers, including those with extraordinary abilities, professionals holding advanced degrees, skilled workers, and investors.
Requirements: Most employment-based visas require a U.S. employer to sponsor the applicant and often a labor certification proving that there are no U.S. workers available for the job.
Diversity Lottery Visas:
Purpose: Also known as the "Green Card Lottery," this program offers up to 50,000 immigrant visas annually to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S.
Requirements: Applicants must meet basic educational or work experience requirements and come from an eligible country.
Refugee and Asylum Visas:
Refugee Visas: For people outside their country of nationality who are unable or unwilling to return due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution.
Asylum Visas: For people already in the U.S. or at a port of entry who seek protection from persecution in their home country.
Requirements: Applicants must prove their persecution or fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
Each immigrant visa category has its own application process and requirements. Understanding these differences is crucial for anyone seeking to immigrate to the United States for permanent residence.
Understanding Visa Eligibility and Requirements
Knowing the eligibility criteria and requirements is crucial for a successful visa application:
Eligibility Criteria: Each visa type has specific eligibility requirements based on the purpose of travel, duration of stay, applicant's background, and other factors. For instance, work visas often require proof of a job offer from a U.S. employer, while student visas need evidence of enrollment in a U.S. institution.
Documentation Requirements: Generally, visa applicants must provide a valid passport, application forms, photos, and supporting documents like financial statements, employment letters, or invitation letters, depending on the visa type.
Legal and Health Checks: Most visa types require applicants to pass health and legal checks. This might include medical examinations and police clearances to ensure the applicant does not pose a health or security risk.
The Visa Application Process
Understanding the steps involved in applying for a visa can simplify the process:
Completing the Application: For most visa types, the application process begins with filling out an online form, such as the DS-160 for nonimmigrant visas or the DS-260 for immigrant visas.
Paying the Visa Fee: There's typically a non-refundable visa application fee. The amount varies depending on the visa type.
Scheduling and Attending the Interview: Most applicants will need to schedule and attend an interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. During the interview, a consular officer will determine your eligibility for the visa.
Preparing for the Interview: Applicants should prepare by organizing their documents and practicing answers to potential interview questions.
Visa Waivers and Special Programs
Some programs allow certain visitors to enter the U.S. without a traditional visa:
Visa Waiver Program (VWP): The VWP allows citizens of participating countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.
Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA): Before traveling under the VWP, eligible travelers must receive authorization through ESTA, an automated system that determines their eligibility to travel to the U.S. under the VWP.
Special Programs: Other special programs, like the U.S.-Canada Visa Waiver Program and U.S.-Mexico Border Crossing Card, facilitate easier entry for short visits or work in specific circumstances.
Overstaying and Visa Violations
Understanding the consequences of overstaying a visa or committing visa violations is crucial:
Consequences of Overstaying: Overstaying your visa can lead to severe penalties, including being barred from re-entering the U.S. for a certain period, deportation, and difficulty obtaining U.S. visas in the future.
Avoiding Violations: Always adhere to the terms of your visa. This includes engaging only in activities permitted by your visa type and leaving the U.S. before your visa expires.
Legal Implications: Overstaying or violating the terms of your visa can also have legal consequences, potentially impacting future immigration benefits or leading to legal action.
Visa Renewals and Extensions
Renewing or extending your visa is a process that requires careful planning:
Understanding Eligibility: Not all visa types are eligible for renewal or extension. Check the specific conditions for your visa category.
Application Process: To renew or extend your visa, you typically need to fill out specific forms, pay applicable fees, and provide documentation supporting your request.
Timing: Apply well before your current visa expires to avoid any gap in your legal status. Processing times can vary, so it's wise to start the process early.
Navigating Visa Changes and Adjustments
Changing your visa type or adjusting your status requires navigating a specific process:
Change of Status: If your reason for being in the U.S. changes (for example, from a student to a worker), you may need to change your visa category. This involves filing a change of status application with USCIS.
Adjustment of Status: If you are eligible to apply for permanent residence, you can file for an adjustment of status without having to return to your home country.
Documentation and Fees: Each process requires its own set of forms, fees, and documentation. Ensure you understand these requirements to successfully navigate visa changes or adjustments.
