Drumroll please... It's time for part two of my thoughts on トロと休日. I am still quite excited about this. I wish it was more accessible to others. To that end, I wonder why it was only released in Japan. My assumption is that it wasn't cost effective/feasible to localize the game to other countries given that it clearly takes place in Japan.

Which leads me to my first comment... This game is artfully created by animating toro and his dialogue over actual real life images shot in a seaside town in Japan. The real photography gives the game an element of realism that is freeing and grounding. Being set in a real town with real people and real objects makes the player reconsider their surroundings. After spending a while in one spot, we tend to ignore the details and discredit any potential surprises or unexpected and exciting qualities. Toro, however, is brand new to this. Together, we get to watch Toro experience the most mundane things for the first time, and how exciting is that?

Beyond being able to share these experiences with Toro, we also color his emerging world understanding with our descriptions. We tell him about our real life friends, we tell him what certain objects are called, how we feel about these things, what their purpose is... I have actually found it to be a great exercise in mindfulness. Taking that extra moment to really look at something, even as simple as an electricity usage meter, and describe it to Toro as fairly as possible is energizing and uplifting. 「これってなぁに？」 'what's this?' asks Toro. It's up to you to give him the best and most fair answer you can. Do you do the same for yourself anymore? I think we should.

Take a look at the images, specifically the bottom two. Toro's expression is this mix between satisfaction and ease. It is his day off, after all. That expression (accompanied by the promotional message 「休め。」 'take a break!') makes me want to sit on a grassy hill and stare up at clouds for my whole life long. If only I could! But then again... what's stoping me? Ask yourself this next time you decide against enjoying an experience. What's stopping you from pausing and finding joy? I'd bet it's because of a limiting perspective. Maybe you don't like the people you work with. I certainly don't! But, I try to go in every day and set that belief aside because it doesn't serve me in any way.

How I Discovered Toro Inoue aka Sony Cat....Nya Nya!

Hiya everyone! 💗💋🍓🌸Sweet*POP🌈🍭💀🌟 here! I thought it'd be nice for me to share this story of how I was able to refresh one of my childhood memories somewhere from last year or 2 years ago. As in how I discovered Japan's precious furry Sony mascot, Toro Inoue

When I was in middle school from 2003-2004, there was a show called Cinematech that was like a slideshow/segment showing video games(mostly openings for the games) even outside of North America like Europe and especially Japan, and it aired on the video game tv channel that I've always loved watching, G4tv.

On one of the episodes of Cinematech, this sweet, precious and cute Japan-exclusive PS2 treasure was shown to end that episode, which I only saw once. Since then I have kept this memory locked inside my mind. As years went by, I have once used internet to search for pictures and videos of that game, but....never any luck. I thought that I would at least treasure that memory.

But then in my adult years, I saw this white kawaii Japanese bobtail neko buddy everywhere in media relating to Sony Japan or video game cats, and felt like that I have seen this character before.

That's when I found out about his actual name Toro Inoue. And then I watched a video on YouTube showing the gameplay of "Toro to Kyuujitsu" that was so familiar from when I was watching my all-time favorite G4TV show Cinematech.

That was the moment when I realized that I have finally found the game I saw in that Cinematech episode. Plus....I have to admit that my only fault for never finding the game was because all this time, I've been typing "Taro's Day Off" because I could have sworn that was the title of the game, but then I've learned the truth that Toro to Kyuujitsu was really *Toro's Day Off*. I've been mistaking Toro as Taro for all these years.😅 Plus, I instantly remembered seeing a familiar old woman who was a host from the shrine in a cutscene because she was the last figure that I saw in the Cinematech ep (before I changed the channel).

Also after finding out the Japanese name of the game, I did a translation lookup for "kyuujitsu", and learned that it means "holiday", "day off". "Toro to Kyuujitsu" means "Toro on Holiday". So now I am very happy to have finally found this game. A childhood memory had been solved.😊

And I happen to love Toro Inoue, Sony's mascot in Japan very much now. I'm just so fond of him nya nya! 😺😸😻😽

Is there any averse toward dark-skinned uke? Everytime there's a dark-skinned uke in manga, many people comment about how he should be the seme instead. In manga and fanarts, whatever there's a dark-skinned character, usually he's portrayed as an aggressive/thug seme. Same with western fandom. I've very rarely seen dark-skinned men being portrayed as gentle, shy or passive/submissive.

I think this is mainly a racism thing, to be honest. It’s very common for people to portray darker-skinned people as “aggressors” in all kinds of media, not just limited to anime and manga (let alone BL!). It’s definitely a big problem. Luckily, I was able to find a fair number of series that have darker-skinned characters as the bottoms or subs.

Stranger by Kuku Hayate - Historical manga, both the main characters are manly-looking/ muscular BL.

Ayashi No Kimi No Koiwazurai by Kuku Hayate - Again, another by her. Supernatural fantasy with fox boys.

Hi again. It's me, Goose. I'm back with another one (so soon?? yes.) so buckle up.

Here we have the simple yet incredibly touching 2001 トロと休日 (toro to kyuujitsu) 'Toro's Day Off'. The game is remarkably simple. You go around and spend your day with charming little torosuke who wants so badly to be a real human being. He checks in with questions like, "would a human do this?" It's cute on the surface, and then the old noggin starts firing up... and I can't help but wonder... would a real person do the things I do every day? Now I'm not that weird... but it is an interesting question. What about my behavior makes me a person? I think little toro is more of a person than he thinks. Maybe even more than me. Perhaps all one needs to be a person is to want to be one.

I'll be honest, I haven't made my way through this whole one just yet. I am still working through it. It's a slow burn but a good reminder to stop and smell the roses. I should have more to say about this, then. I suppose I'll make a part two.
