Live in Reality: You Would Not Want a Friend Like Penelope
Tumblr media
I can’t with people talking bout Cressida is meaner than Penelope or that Cressida is a bully and Eloise is a bad person for befriending Cressida. The difference is Cressida is upfront with her mean girl attitude. She isn’t two-faced and would let you know upfront that she doesn’t fuck with you, totally opposite from Penelope who would write the muddiest of shit about you behind your back and feel absolutely no remorse, while on top of that gaslighting into believing she’s the victim.
Unless you’re a masochist, who would want a friend who smiles in your face but has secretly been resenting you and your family for years, has been tricking and lying to you for years; the friend has been disrespecting your family behind your back, gaslights you, is jealous of you every waking moment, always singing the same “woe is me, life is unfair” song to you but accuses you of being a bad friend, throws you under the bus to save their own neck and tries to manipulate it as they were trying to “help” or “save” you.
Anyone with a well-adjusted mind who has a friend or who sees a love one have a friend such as that will immediately take the action of cutting them off, despite any history, despite the memories, we would clearly think that a friend as toxic as that is not a good friend or rather a good person to be around.
So why does the individual who has been dealt with such a friend has to apologize or accept the toxic’s friend past and current bullshit. Does it make sense that that individual who has been treated like that by the toxic friend apologize to the toxic friend?
That’s y’all’ logic when it comes to Eloise and Penelope.
When you holler your chewbacca war cry in defense of Penelope, you are rooting for that toxic friend I have explained earlier knowing damn well that if someone like that was in your life or in the life of someone you deeply care for, you would NOT be associating with them or advise others not to.
But Eloise mustn’t be upset and must accept Pen’s hollow apology despite all the things that she has objectively done because…🤷🏾‍♂️ we’re not allowed to be mad at the plus size character cause she’s plus size, that’s the reason people are mainly giving me.
Who cares about size? A toxic person is A TOXIC PERSON: short, tall, small, curvy, a person’s character isn’t defined or should be given a free pass because of their appearance. That’s what you guys are doing with Penelope and it’s insane dawg 😭. You can’t attack people for focusing on her size when YOU FOCUS ON IT! I hope people noticed that, Penelope defenders always bringing up fatphobia and the girl’s size while the Pen critics don’t mention are size at all.
P.S. Given from the spoilers, Pen apologizes to Eloise about the betrayal and being LW but goes back to the same schtick, talking shit bout her brother so ask yourself how genuine she really was
P.S.S Even Colin thinks what LW did was wicked and unnecessary, especially since in season 2 he said if Marina had told him bout the pregnancy, he would’ve still went with the marriage. Plus his sister got dunked on….but hooray for Penelope getting a HEA and being a part of a family she disparages.

so can i finally share my cressida lesbian headcanon 🥺
Tumblr media
i know, i know she’s a bully.
if only there was a character who was super femme and was mean because she spent her whole life denying who she truly was and only finds true happiness when she comes to terms with being a lesbian
Tumblr media
this excerpt from a PRIDE article is what made me think this could become canon
Tumblr media
Jess said that she wants to bring queerness to the forefront in this series. one of the bridgertons could be queer, but seeing as they all end up in straight pairings i feel like it is more likely to be someone outside the family (though i am a fan of bi benedict)
Tumblr media
along with this cressida has had an unusual amount of presence in the bridgerton promotions this season versus seasons 1 & 2. we’re also supposed to be seeing more of cressida’s home life which i assume will not be good.
my thought process is that like most of the girls in the ton she is being forced to find a man with a high enough rank regardless of whether she loves him or not. but cressida has always seen this as a means to an end. everytime we see her going after a man, it’s for the money or perception. if she married the prince she’d be a princess, if she married lord featherington she’d be rich (no one knew he was lying remember), and if she married colin she’d be a bridgerton and they are basically as close to royalty as one can get without marrying into the actual royal family. it has never been about love for her.
i mean read this quote and tell me it isn’t cressida coded.
“What I’ve realized is why I’m such a bitch all the time. I’m a bitch because I’m angry. I’m angry because I have all of these feelings, feelings for you, that I’m afraid of dealing with because I’m afraid of dealing with the consequences. I’m afraid of the talks and the looks.”
Tumblr media
next season we see cressida once again going after a wealthy man, lord debling and he seems to be quite the catch. he is also extremely interested in penelope, not cressida.
i wonder if we’ll have a little polly honeycombe moment moment and she’ll have this realization with a girl she meets in the ton.

Immediate thoughts on Bridgerton Season 2, Episode 2 ("Off to the Races). Spoilers below the cut:
Kate, Mary, and Lady Danbury are all speaking on behalf of Edwina now. She even looks over at Kate before voicing an opinion. Yeah, Edwina's going to find her voice before the end of the season and it will not be pretty when she does.
The new heir is making himself at home and it seems like "questionable styling choices" is a family trait, even for those who married into it *cough*Portia!*cough*
Kate controlling the line of suitors and not letting Anthony cut ahead was funny. Takes me back to season 1 and how Anthony acted with Daphne. It's time for him to get a taste of his own medicine.
Thomas Dorset and Edwina are just trying to distract Kate and Anthony to get them to stop bickering over the horses. Their banter is legendary. I was disappointed that Dorset was actually a setup from Anthony, but I do believe that Dorset genuinely liked Kate.
Philippa and Mr. Cheese are finally married! I was rooting for them.
Poor Edwina is going to be used as a pawn throughout this season, isn't she? Anthony's intentions are not 100% honest or honorable and now the Queen is using her to help track down Whistledown.
Anthony probably needs his ego knocked down a few pegs with how confident he is that he will emerge "victorious" in his courtship of Edwina. The boy just did the 19th century equivalent of buying Edwina a Ferrari. One of my favorite quotes from this season is in this episode, though: "I assure you, Miss Sharma. This is a very real horse. I would not recommend trying to climb inside."
And even though it is clear he is not in love with Edwina, props to Anthony for calling out Kate about making this about what she wants and not what Edwina wants. Props as well to Violet for calling out Anthony when he complains about Kate accusing him of playing games.
"You are Pen. You do not count." Colin, you ASS. I know you didn't mean it maliciously, but still. You ASS.
I'm not a fan of the new Lord Featherington attempting to court Cressida Cowper. Cressida is Penelope's worst bully in the books and having her be the new Lady Featherington would be Penelope's worst nightmare.
Anthony stealing Ben's poetry and claims it as his own.😒 At the very least, he admits it. But it's all still part of a grander scheme to try and convince Edwina to be his viscountess so it's still very underhanded to me. The benefit to Anthony's scheme was that Edwina actually stands up for herself a little bit with Kate instead of taking her sister's word as absolute gospel. She's formed her own opinion and she's going to trust that one. I don't blame Kate for running from the room, though. Especially when Anthony smirks at her like that.
I feel sad and sorry for Kate that she has resigned herself to a life alone. She doesn't seem truly happy with her choice. I think she's trying more trying to convince herself that she's happy with her choices more than anything. She's a lot like Anthony that way: trying to convince herself that she's doing what's best for everyone instead of being selfish for her own happiness. Lady Danbury has a point: the difference between her and Kate is that Danbury has actually lived a life and hasn't given up on it like Kate seems to have done. Lady Danbury seems sad to see Kate giving up already. I think, despite the rough first impression and the dog, she really likes Kate. This season might be more about exploring Kate's insecurities instead of her trauma. Or maybe it's her insecurities that have been brought on by her traumas.
I thought that Madame Delacroix would figure out who Lady Whistledown was, thanks to the promo photos, and I-along with everyone else-was RIGHT! The most unrealistic part of the book series was that Penelope got away with it as long as she did. And that it took over ten years for someone to put any real effort into discovering her identity. And once one person knows...others will find out.

Possible Unpopular Opinion About Bridgerton:
I actually like what they did with Penelope’s character. In the books despite her running a gossip column for ten years the narrative never once questions the ethics of her running an entire gossip column. The books state that she only went after those who deserve to get insulted or those in society who could survive getting insulted in order to ensure that Penelope’s goodness and innocence is never in questions. But that portrayal of her character doesn’t really work for several reasons.
1. The books stating she only goes after those who deserve it. But that is according to Penelope and the Bridgertons. But Penelope is not the arbiter of truth and goodness. The books state plenty of times that people rarely speak to Penelope and she is often too shy to speak to others. So how is Penelope to determine someone else’s character and whether they deserve it or not if she barely gets to know them. While the books tries to explain that by saying Penelope is a brilliant observer but I don’t buy it. The truth is you cannot determine someone’s character by observing them at balls. She is only privy to a small snippet of their lives. She still has no idea what they are thinking or even what their personal lives are like. Who is Penelope to decide whether someone deserves it or not. She like everyone else only can see things from her perspective. It does not automatically make it correct or the truth. While we see Cressida Cowper who is awful, we still don’t know anything about all the other people Whistledown has reported. I hope the show addresses this.
2. Penelope is judged by the ton without any of them getting to know her. They say rude things to her face. But Penelope also judges everyone in the ton without knowing them. And she then publishes these judgements for ALL of society to see. For ALL of society to then judge and gossip about. Does that really make her better than them? Is that really a good thing? At what point does someone go from a victim of bullying to the victimiser. The gossip column is immensely powerful in both the show and the books, the whole ton is obsessed with it. The column has the power to make or ruin someone. Gossip is an incredibly powerful and often insidious. I like how the show shows how it can ruin someone’s life e.g Marina or even ruin Daphne’s chances with suitors or even with Nigel berbrooke.
3. I definitely agree that Nigel Berbrooke definitely deserved it and he was an awful guy. But Penelope pretty much just overhears this story about him probably from her maids and publishes it. She has no idea if it is true or not. The books even state that she has published gossip she overheard. There is a very real possibility she could reveal something horrible about someone which is not true. Whistledown’s word is considered as good as gospel. Just because you hear something doesn’t make it true. The books even state whistledown is sometimes wrong. There is a very real possibility that she could ruin someone innocent.
I am not trying to be sanctimonious about gossiping. I gossip, women gossip, men gossip, everyone gossips. It is human nature. I also know it is just a tv show and a form of escapism. But there is a difference between gossiping between your friends and publishing gossip and judgements about people you barely know in a public paper which everyone reads and believes. Penelope is a very grey character. I like how the series shows the dangers of it. I hope when Whistledown is revealed they don’t make her out to be some kind of hero for saying and publishing all these things. They did this in the books. Even if she does redeem herself running a gossip column is never harmless. It does have the possibility to ruin someone’s life.
