The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye DVD Set Review
Tumblr media
Originally airing its two seasons in 2006, The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye is post-apocalyptic, slice-of-life, western, adventure story with the occasional giant robot battle. In a distant future, after a high-tech war devastates the environment and kill off most of humanity, self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades Honoka roves the desert in a tank doing odd jobs. The show doesn’t quite have a single overarching story, instead offering a series of smaller story arcs, as well as recurring characters and plot threads that remain relevant beyond their original arcs. Another quirk of the show is that makes substantial use of an omniscient third-person narrator.
A teenage girl already famed as “the Sword Dancer,” Honoka will take extermination, investigation, escort, and whatever other jobs she can find. Her only rule is that she won’t kill people. In a rarity for anime characters, she wields both sword and gun with aplomb. Also, she periodically breaks out in poetry. Her partner is Bogie, a snarky AI who operates Honoka’s desert tank and tries to serve as a mature adult figure for Honoka. His efforts to be the voice of reason don’t always bear fruit, as seen in a running gag where he criticizes Honoka for constantly splurging on new guns.
I’m pretty sure only Honoka and Bogie appear in every episode, but there are a number of major recurring characters. The most significant is Iks, a mysterious and possibly extraterrestrial young (?) man. Paif is an ex-assassin who now works as a school nurse, and she sees Iks as a romantic rival for Honoka’s attention. Zankan is an experienced engineer who works on Honoka’s tank, while Joey is an up-and-coming engineer. Zankan’s young daughter Milly also appears regularly, and her connection with Honoka is the show’s most developed relationship.
Tumblr media
“The Third” isn’t just part of the show’s title, it refers to the mutant, three-eyed technocrats who control the world in the wake of civilization’s collapse. The red eye in the middle of their foreheads allows them to psychically interface with technology. The self-appointed caretakers of ordinary humans, the Third seek to prevent a repeat of the great war that destroyed the world. To this end, they use combat robots to enforce the “Technos Taboo,” a set of rules regulating technological development. The show offers a surprisingly nuanced portrayal of the Third. Sometimes they are cruel authoritarians. However, they have a legitimate and understandable goal and show signs of learning from their mistakes, undermining any chance viewing them as straightforward villains. The most prominent member of the the Third seen in-story is Joganki, with Fila and Rona being two other notable ones.
On the aural front, I quite enjoyed the soundtrack and consider it to be a highlight of The Third. The first time I saw this show, it was with subtitles, so for this review, I ventured into unknown territory and watched the dub instead. I should note here that I rarely view dubbed anime, so I don’t have the best frame of reference for evaluating the English voice acting. That said, I found the acting perfectly satisfying, though once in while a line would sound stilted and forced. To me, the highlight of the English voice acting was Jamieson Price as Bogie (I’ve heard his voice before as Sojiro in the video game Persona 5 Royal). Looking up the voice actors, I was amused to see how many of them also have credits in the mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes. For example, Joganki shares the voice of David Patrick Seitz with FEH’s Hector, Steve Canden voices Iks and also FEH’s Lewyn, and Joey’s VA Sam Regal also voices Donnel and Stahl in FEH.
This is a fifteen-year-old anime. Unsurprisingly, the visuals are noticeably dated. That said, the art is still pretty and effectively conveys both gorgeous desert landscapes and frenetic combat scenes. This DVD set comes with all 24 episodes of the show, spread across six disks. All the episodes are available in Japanese with English subtitles, and also dubbed with English voice acting. The only meaningful bonuses are subtitled interviews with the Japanese seiyuu for Honoka and Iks, plus some galleries with character art. I like The Third, something I can’t often say about pre-2010 anime, and I encourage you to try it if you haven’t.
Grade: A

Anisong Fantasy Live in SG Vol 1 Report - Beyond Phenomenal Concert!
Tumblr media
(image cr: AFA)
!!STATUS: STILL NOT OVER THIS CONCERT!!
It’s been two days since the concert ended and I’m still having post concert depression. So last Saturday, I attended Anisong Fantasy Live Vol 1 in Singapore which featured stunning lineup of GARNiDELiA, ELISA, Takigawa Alisa, Luna Haruna, Kalafina & Aimer. Since the lineup featured anisong artists, I’m quite familiar with all of them and their songs~ Also, I’ve been always a fan of Kalafina hence, it was like a dream came true when I saw them TT_TT
date of event: 18th March 2017
PRE ANISONG CONCERT REPORT
The whole morning of 18th March, I couldn’t focus on doing anything at all. At 4pm, I left the house and head down to the venue earlier to get some merchandise and meet up with my friends. These friends are actually Kalafina & Fictionjunction fans that I managed to contact over the net. Also if you are a fan of Kalafina/FictionJunction based in Singapore, please don’t be shy and join the group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1936347716651751
Arrived at the venue, I went straight to the merchandise section and bought - Kalafina LIVE THE BEST 2015 “Red Day” & “Blue Day” Tote Bag & “Kalafina with Strings” Christmas Premium LIVE TOUR 2016 Plastic Folder. I wanted to get more items from the other artists but most of them are sold out ><
After that, I went ahead to meet up with my friends. Despite my first time meeting with everyone, we all managed to warm up with each other through our common interest of Kalafina. We also had a huge banner to write our messages. It was really a great sight to see that there are alot of Kalafina fans in Singapore! After everyone wrote their messages, we placed the banner at the gifts area and hoping that it will reach Kalafina safe and sound.
Tumblr media
AS I’M WRITING THIS POST, I GOT AN UPDATE FROM KALAFINA LINE BLOG THAT THEY RECEIVED THE BANNER ;AAAA; THANK YOU KALAFINA FOR ADORING YOUR FANS.

!!Be prepared for ride of emotional feels, fangirling moment & long report!!
ANISONG CONCERT REPORT
At 6:50pm, I went to the hall to find my seat and honestly at that point of time, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I was seated at the extreme left of the front row A. I had an amazing view as there wasn’t any heads to block my view and a direct view on the singers! BLESS THE VIEW AND ALL THAT WAITING FOR CONCERT TICKET DURING AFA DAY 2!
In the opening, there was a special footage of ClariS concert performance. I’m guessing that they will be one of the guest for Anisong Fantasy Live Volume 2, who knows?
GARNiDELiA
The concert kicked off with GARNiDELiA as the opening act and they really geared up the audience! With MARiA’s powerful vocals and the band’s energetic performance, I was already in the trance! Able to see MARiA so close was an experience and she’s extremely pretty with her stage outfit. Gokuraku Jodo is my current favourite song from GARNiDELiA and the band delivered it really well. Props to MARiA for singing and dancing to Gokuraku Jodo!
Here are the setlist for GARNiDELiA
ambiguous- Kill la Kill Opening 2
Blazing - Gundam: G Reconguista Opening 1
Yakusoku -promise Code- - Qualidea Code Ending 2
Gokuraku Jodo
ELISA
The last time I watched ELISA live was back in 2013 during AFA Valrave Night concert and being able to hear her live again was amazing. Her live vocals were simply beautiful from her performance of ex: tella to REALISM, despite having technical issue with the sound at first. Also, her English interaction to the audience were adorable!
ELISA: Are you ready for.
Audience: /silent, waiting for her to complete the sentence/
ELISA: Are you ready for… Are you ready for…
Audience: /knowing that ELISA was stuck with her ENGLISH & cheered!/
ELISA: /laughs & looked at the band members/
Here are the setlist for ELISA
ex:tella- Fate/EXTELLA Opening 1
Real Force - To Aru Kagaku no Railgun Ending 2
REALISM - Kakumei Valvrave Ending 2
Takigawa Alisa
Beautiful voice + playing guitar = WIN! Alisa’s performance was simply beautiful as well. Alisa definitely have the next-door-girl and carefree vibe~ Hearing her songs live brings back the Nanatsu no Taizai feels!! NOW I DEMAND A PROPER THIRD SEASON PLS!!
Here are the setlist Takigawa Alisa
Season - Nanatsu no Taizai Ending 2
Irosenai Hitomi - Nanatsu no Taizai: Seisen no Shirushi Ending 1
Sayonara no Yukue - Owarimonogatari Ending 1
Luna Haruna
When Luna Haruna appeared on stage, she brought a fun vibe alongside with her! She was totally adorable with her stage outfit! She had this very lovely and bubbly personality as seen during the interaction with audience. Though I wished that she sang her debut song, Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau from Fate/Zero ending. Also, she sang one of my favourite song, Startear and it was a stellar performance with strong vocals.
Here are the setlist for Luna Haruna
Overfly - Sword Art Online Ending 2
Ai Wo Utae - Monogatari Series 2nd Season Ending 1
Startear - Sword Art Online II Ending 2
Kimiiro Signal - Saekano Opening 1
SPECIAL COLLABORATION STAGE 1 - Takigawa Alisa X ELISA X Luna Haruna X GARNiDELiA
Who knew that we could see such collaboration happened? The first collaboration featured Takigawa Alisa X ELISA and the second collaboration featured Luna Haruna x GARNiDELiA. I personally think that Alisa X ELISA voices doesn’t really suit each other for duet but nevertheless it was a good performance. Haruna x GARNiDELiA performance was really upbeat and their voices had good chemistry. The last song for the collaboration stage 1 featured Alisa X ELISA X Haruna X MARiA and overall it was an energetic all-girl performance!!
Here are the setlist for SPECIAL COLLABORATION STAGE 1
Departures ~Anata ni Okuru Ai no Uta~ (Takigawa Alisa X ELISA) - Guilty Crown Ending 1 (EGOIST)
INNOCENCE (Luna Haruna x GARNiDELiA) - Sword Art Online Opening 2 (Eir Aoi)
Sorairo Days (Takigawa Alisa X ELISA X Luna Haruna X MARiA) - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann OST (Shoko Nakagawa)
Aimer
AIMER’S PERFORMANCE AND VOCALS WAS SO SURREAL!!! ISTG I NEARLY TEARED HEARING HER PERFORMANCE AND IT WAS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. Throughout her performance, she was only accompanied by a piano and I was definitely in awe ;A; This was my 2nd time hearing Aimer live and she sounded less nervous/shaky compared to her 1st live in SG during AFA2015. As always, her English was fluent and she mentioned about loving Singapore’s night scenery.
Aimer: I want my songs to inspire you in the future.
Overall, her performance was just pure eargasm!! I honestly don’t mind if she come to Singapore for her own concert and I know I will definitely attend!!
Here are the setlist for Aimer
Brave Shine - Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season Opening 1
LAST STARDUST - Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works OST
StarRingChild - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn Ending 7
Akane Sasu - Natsume Yuujinchou Go Ending 1
ninelie - Koutetsujou no Kabaneri Ending 1
Kalafina
THIS IS THE PART WHERE I HAD MY EYES BURSTING WITH TEARS! When the music started playing, my heart was literally beating in excitement. I was holding Kalafina LIVE THE BEST 2015 “Blue Day” Towel in that hopes that the members will take notice of it. AND THEY DID! During the encore, Keiko was saying about how she saw some fans holding Kalafina concert towel and she felt grateful towards the fans!
For the 1st song - Magia, Kalafina wore beautiful kimono-like robe and they revealed their 2nd outfit during One Light. Hikaru and Wakana were mostly at my left side of the stage. I WAS FREAKING OUT THAT HIKARU MET MY EYES DURING THE ONE LIGHT PERFORMANCE, SAW MY KALAFINA TOWEL AND SMILED!!
Kalafina closed their segment by singing Sprinter and I WAS CRYING INSIDE BECAUSE OF KARA NO KYOUKAI FEELS! I sang my heart out, following to the lyrics of the song ;AAA; KALAFINA’s performance was truly mesmerizing and given the chance to watch it live was a dream come true!!
Here are the setlist for Kalafina
Magia - Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Ending 1
One Light - Arslan Senki (TV) Ending 2

ring your bell - Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season Ending 1
Sprinter (Band Version) - Kara no Kyoukai 5: Mujun Rasen Ending 1
SPECIAL COLLABORATION STAGE 2 - Kalafina X Aimer
THIS COLLABORATION WAS SIMPLY BEYOND WORDS!! I can’t describe that feeling when Kalafina and Aimer were singing each other song. Seeing them both on the same stage was honestly remarkable. IT WAS EXTRA MAGICAL AND THAT MOMENT IS SO PRECIOUS!!! I honestly can’t describe how beautiful their vocals blended together ;A; Aimer started singing Believe’s first verse and when Kalafina started to harmonise, I had goosebumps!!
Their interaction with the audience was fun as well! As Aimer came for Singapore for 3 times and Kalafina only came for 2 times, Kalafina asked Aimer for any recommendation spots.
Kalafina: Do you have recommendation spots?
Aimer: Last time I came here (speaking in Japanese)
Keiko: /trying to translate Aimer’s speech through actions/ WWWW
Aimer: I went to Botanic Garden. It’s a flower garden and it was really wild.
Kalafina: Wah, we want to go!
After the interaction, Kalafina mentioned that since Aimer sang their song so its Kalafina’s turn to sing Aimer’s song. IT WAS ANOTHER MASTERPIECE :’)))
Here are the setlist for Kalafina X Aimer
believe (acoustic version) - Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season Ending 2) (Kalafina)
Anata ni Deawanakereba ~Kasetsu Touka~ - Natsuyuki Rendezvous Ending 1 (Aimer)
Kalafina x Aimer was honestly the perfect way to ended off Anisong Fantasy Live. IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY FOR THIS CONCERT!!
POST ANISONG CONCERT REPORT
I was still feeling surreal after the concert ended. Some of the audience were waiting for group photo with the anisong artists and I didn’t, since my seat wasn’t picked during the lucky draw ;A; But Kalafina and Aimer weren’t part of the group photo so I don’t feel too sad about it.
Anyways, this concert will forever etched in my memory. Also, VIP ticket holders were given an autographed printed poster and I shall treasure that. Below are my loots:
Tumblr media
ALL IN ALL, ITS BEEN AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE ATTENDING THIS CONCERT. THANK YOU SOZO AND SONY MUSIC FOR MAKING THIS HAPPENED. THANK TO ALL THE ARTISTS AND BAND MEMBERS AS WELL!!~~

Bookshelf Briefs 7/30/18
Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, Vol. 2 | By Inio Asano | Viz Media – If the sight of Oran’s drooling face on the cover of this volume doesn’t inform you that this is one of those weird manga titles, nothing will. That said, for a manga about aliens infiltrating the Earth, and the Earth’s rather violent response to this, there’s a lot that’s grounded in reality here. The gang’s friend Kiho is dating a guy, which puts her on the outs with the rest of her (single) friends, and also causes friction when her boyfriend turns out to be a bit fond of conspiracy theories. Possibly my favorite scene in the volume is when the girls all go to their friend Ai’s house and met her four identical siblings… and one goth guy who calls himself the Black Knight, which meets Oran’s immediate approval. A lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
Laid-Back Camp, Vol. 3 | By Afro | Yen Press – We’re still working on the characterization of anyone not named Nadeshiko or Rin, but for the most part the third volume will please readers who enjoyed the first two, as it combines chatter about camping with the camping itself—though honestly, Rin’s driving to get to the camp ends up occupying most of the time. Sadly, a trip with Nadeshiko is turned into a solo trip because she gets a cold, but on the bright side we may finally be luring Rin’s eccentric friend Ena to go along on the next trip. The long-term plotline seems to be to get Rin to be interested in camping with other people… but it’s certainly a long term project, as we’re three volumes in and we haven’t seen a group effort yet. Next time? – Sean Gaffney
My Boy, Vol. 2 | By Hitomi Takano | Vertical Comics – As with the previous volume, I recommend skipping the afterword. If you do, then My Boy continues to be a touching story of a young woman who’s got a newfound family in a young neglected boy. The problem here is that Mashuu already HAS a father and brother, and her hanging around with him all the time is inevitably going to be seen as creepy at best. One scene, where Mashuu can’t contact his brother, has Satoko going into his home and the entire scene has you holding your breath waiting for something horrible to happen. It still, may, in fact, especially now that her coworker is noticing the attention she’s giving Mashuu. I don’t like him. The manga is very good, though, and so far is avoiding obvious pitfalls. – Sean Gaffney
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Vol. 2 | By Yu Tomofuji | Yen Press – We return to the adventures of the most earnest sacrificial princess ever. Last time I mentioned that I felt the author might have grown up reading Fruits Basket, and that feeling hasn’t gone away—Sariphi isn’t quite as shiny as Tohru, but she still tends to try to overdo it in order to avoid disappointing anyone. In this case, though, it almost leads to her death. Fortunately, she’s gaining more allies in this book, as we meet her friend Amit, an alligator woman with a big heart, and the phoenix she summons, which is both adorable and hilarious—he needs to be animated so that I can hear his accent. Shoujo fans will enjoy this cute fantasy romance. – Sean Gaffney
School of Horns, Vol. 1 | By Mito Aoi | Yen Press – We’ve seen an endless amount of magical academies in the last few years, but there’s always room for more. This one has students divided up based on the horns they have on their heads—each type determines the magic. Our hero is half-human, so his horns are smaller than the other students (does this remind you of anything?), but in addition his powers seem to mess with others, meaning he’s a strange fifth type of magic user. Yes, it’s the old “bullied kid ends up being the really special one” story, but the main reason to read this is the slowly developing relationship between Eru and Rihito, who are sort of Deku and Todoroki-esque. This didn’t reach out and grab me, but it’s certainly pleasant enough. – Sean Gaffney
Shojo FIGHT!, Vol. 4 | By Yoko Nihonbashi | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – The fallout from the Kokuyodani team’s participation in volleybetting is going to be long-lasting, it seems. Part of their punishment involves living at the school for a month and undergoing intense training (including fasting, which supposedly “cures any illness”) and practice games against teams that believe the worst rumors. After one of these, Neri has a major attack of the angst and runs off, but after a good talk (and more!) with Shigeru, she seems finally on the verge of overcoming her past trauma, and actually tells Inugami and Odagiri what happened with her old teammates and lets herself enjoy volleyball again. And now that she seems to be on the road to better mental health, there’s enough time to give several other characters a bit more fleshing out in this volume, which is very welcome. I really enjoy this series. – Michelle Smith
Takane & Hana, Vol. 4 | By Yuki Shiwasu | Viz Media – There’s a lot less snarking in this book, but maybe I’m getting used to the fact that this is never going to match the hilarity of its start. What it does do is develop both the plot and characters—Hana is not quite ready to admit she has romantic feelings for Takane, but she’s getting there. Meanwhile there’s a new secretary at Takane’s business whose job it is to try to break them up—unfortunately, he’s a nice guy at heart, and his heart isn’t really into this, especially when Hana does not back down immediately. And lest you forget that Hana is in high school (and believe me, that is the premise), there’s a culture festival! Maids! Butlers! Cross-dressing! And Takane, being a giant ass. Which is what I’m here for. – Sean Gaffney
Toriko, Vol. 43 | By Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro | Viz Media – Toriko has finished, and it goes out the same way it’s always been—the food love is so much more interesting than the fighting. The first half of the book wraps up the fighting, including even giving the hapless Zongeh a part to play, but honestly I was ready to skip to the back half, where Toriko and his friends indulge in his Full-Course Meal, all prepared by Komatsu and HIS friends. There is also Toriko and Rin’s wedding, but again, I wonder if that was suggested by editorial fiat to avoid having the series seem too gay—the manga is all about the relationship between Toriko and Komatsu, and everything else is secondary. In the final pages, they even go off on a sort of honeymoon together. In space. – Sean Gaffney
Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty, Vol. 5 | By Megumi Morino | Kodansha Comics – Having whisked Shizu away from the hospital, Tetsu heads for his grandfather’s place by the beach, whereupon many revelations ensue. There’s a lot here that I didn’t expect to learn until the next (and final) volume, including the truth of what happened to Tetsu’s mom and why he’s been so desperate to earn money. What’s even better is that not only do readers learn these things, but so do Tetsu’s father and sisters, and everyone resolves to work harder as a family so that no one member feels the need to sacrifice everything for the sake of the others. There is one thing they don’t know, though, and it was such a great surprise that it makes me want to reread earlier volumes for hints. I’ll miss this series once it’s gone, but I bet the conclusion will be great. – Michelle Smith
Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, Vol. 3 | By Tadahiro Miura | Seven Seas – This continues to be a title that you should only read if you are a teenage boy in search of something to get you horny. That said, I’m not that market at all, and I’m still reading it. I think it’s simply that compared to other series in this genre, I find it more tolerable—especially its lead, who continues to not be the standard Keitaro clone who plagues this sort of title. In fact, most of the girls spend more time fondling each other than they do the lead—and no, that doesn’t mean there’s any hints of yuri. These girls all want Kogarashi. But as with my last review, I will admit that Yuuna is a good series for those who want harmless comedic fun and like huge breasts. – Sean Gaffney

For some reason sentient battle tank saying this is funny.
Then again based one flashback I'm not sure if Bogie is as much "AI battle tank" as much as "AI plug-in that happens to be controlling tank"
