also to be clear. to put it in a post and not the tags. i really don’t think the doctor was “leading martha on”. i don’t think he was oblivious to her crush on him, but i think its extremely disingenuous to claim that he was purposefully manipulating her. you can say a lot about how he treated martha wrong, yes, but he wasn’t at fault for not returning her romantic feelings, he was never under any obligation to do that. forming an intense emotional, platonic bond while one party has romantic feelings for the other doesn’t mean that the relationship is bad because it never goes in that direction and stays platonic.

Yeah, the Master taking a moment to make funny noises and check his new vocal range was obviously there for Martha to point out she knows his voice...
And considering this is literally the only time the Master normally regenerated on screen, the data isn't rich enough to be proper evidence...
But wtvs, work's intent, I'm now chewing on the fact that where the Doctor's first concern after regenerating is what they look like, the Master goes for what they sound like. Sth sth being passively perceived vs. actively expressing. Sth sth making impression vs. affecting change. Sth sth the verb "obey" deriving from "ob-audire", ie. "listen".

why ain't we talking about how the Master keeps the Doctor on their toes and keep them aware what's the direction they should be going - which, honestly, is just the extreme opposite of whatever the hell the Master has going on - and the only regeneration that didn't meet/have a proper Master (a ying to their yang) was the most unhinged and the one who most had angry fits of all regenerations?
I was re-watching "A Town Called Mercy" and when the Doctor throws the "scientist" out of the city line to be rapted by the cyborg & point a gun at him to keep him there I can clearly imagine that if the Master showed up there Eleventh would automatically look at them and then the gun and be absolutely disgusted at himself.

i really do think the desire to paint ten as unambiguously The Worst™️ when it comes to his relationship with martha is out of this desire to uncomplicate their relationship. to decouple them as friends and people who profoundly impacted each other’s lives. it’s just an easier narrative to swallow: that ten was Awful to her and then martha kicked him to the curb when she realized she was too good for him. easier, maybe, then dealing with the troubles of unrequited affection don’t have to be anyone’s fault, or that ten shut martha out in a lot of ways but let her in in others that he wouldn’t let any other companion near, or that they were still friends, they still wanted to see each other and be around each other, even though it was messy and sometimes hurt. you know?

I love that the Doctor keeps Nardole just bc of River. Like he was River's dog. And now River's gone and Nardole is the closest thing he has left of her so he WILL take care of him but he does NOT like dogs.
