Why do authors (fiction especially dah) hate Lucullus so much? I mean he's a cool guy and deserves better
Alas, most authors have never heard of him.
He's retired by the time Julius Caesar's career gets big, and is pretty easy to ignore unless you're writing about the rise of Sulla, Pompey or Mithridates VI.
Authors who like Caesar or Marius may vilify Lucullus for being an ally of Sulla, while those who like Pompey may vilify Lucullus for being one of his rivals.
My favorite portrayal of him is in Santiago Posteguillo's Roma soy yo (I am Rome), which is also available in English. The overall book is very pro-Caesar and Marius, and anti-Sullan, but Lucullus is a fun, menacing and pragmatic character in one of the later chapters.
A warmer, more sympathetic Lucullus appears in the short story "The Cherries of Lucullus," in A Gladiator Only Dies Once by Steven Saylor. I liked this portrayal too, but the ending is rather tragic.

I'd like to bring attention to the following line, when Belly goes to see Taylor before she gets on the bus the first time she's leaving Cousins in Season 1:
"It'll never happen again, Steven said it was a mistake and we never should've gone there, so-"
Belly and Taylor hadn't spoken to each other since she walked in on the kiss, BUT EVIDENTLY STEVEN AND HER DID TALK.
Then when Belly confronts Steven and says she really likes you, and he's all "I know".
Personally, I just wish we'd gotten to see THAT scene.
I 0% expected to become a Saylor (Staylor?) fan, especially since I read the books and don't have any recollection of them interacting beyond that one kiss/hook up moment, but here I am.

Do you have a fav portrayal of Agrippa and Octavian and other Roman related history in media?
My favorite portrayals of Agrippa and Octavian are split between @sforzesco's awesome comics (along with lots of other Romans!), and Colleen McCullough's version in Masters of Rome. McCullough does make some...questionable...characterization choices at times, and tries really hard to insist they're both straight, but fails hilariously and they still read like a gay couple anyway:
(From The October Horse)
My other favorite stories set in Rome can all be found in my favorite media page, and most of the books now have linked reviews! If you're into shipping or queer romance I have to give an extra shout-out to Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa books, which have several great queer characters. Octavian only gets like one scene and Agrippa doesn't appear at all, but it's still awesome in other ways.

Romans had never worshipped animals as gods. Nor are they sentimental about household creatures. How could it be otherwise with a race that esteems human life so very little? Beneath the numbing apathy of their masters, the slaves of Rome, imported from all over the earth but especially from the East, often lose whatever notions of sacred life they may have acquired as children in faraway lands. But Bethesda retained a sense of decorum and awe in the face of an animal's death, and in her way she grieved for Bast.
