Zwei Jahre Krieg an der inneren Front

Im Rahmen der „Bekämpfung nicht traditioneller Daseinsformen“ hat das russische Parlament die LGBT-Bewegung als extremistisch eingestuft. Extremismus wird in der heutigen russischen Gesetzgebung mit Terrorismus gleichgesetzt, d.h. alle, die einer solchen Bewegung angehören, können als Extremisten und Terroristen verurteilt werden und demzufolge den Rest ihres Lebens weit weg von zuhause, den Himmel nur kariert durch das kleine Fenster in einer Kerkerwand bestaunen. Besonders scharf wird in diesem Gesetz „Propaganda nicht traditioneller Werte in der Öffentlichkeit“ bestraft, die Regenbogenfahne gehört verboten. Das neue Gesetz ist eine hinterhältige Falle, denn diese „LGBT-Bewegung“ existiert formal nirgends auf der Welt und schon gar nicht in Russland. Sie ist nirgendwo registriert, hat keinen Vorstand und keinen Vorstandsvorsitzenden, die Bürgerinnen und Bürger sollen nach Gefühl entscheiden, ob das was sie tun mit einer solchen Bewegung in Verbindung gebracht werden könnte. Im Grunde kann jeder Bürger jede Zeit mithilfe dieses Gesetzes bestraft werden. Die ersten nichts ahnenden Opfer der neuen Gesetzgebung waren Menschen, die falschen Schmuck trugen, sich etwas Cooles tätowiert hatten und der große russische Schriftsteller Fjodor Dostojewski. Eine Frau wurde von ihren KollegInnen verpetzt, sie habe die Ohrringe in den Farben des Regenbogens getragen, sie wurde abgeholt und eingesperrt. Es hat mehrere Tage gedauert, bis die Sittenpolizei feststellen konnte, bei den Ohrringen waren die Farben in einer anderen Reihenfolge zusammengetragen, nach dem blauen kam nämlich nicht der  gelbe, sondern der rote Streifen. Die Frau wurde freigelassen. Ein Tattoo- Studio wurde geschlossen, weil es als Werbung für ihre Tattoos ein anzügliches Bild im Schaufenster ausstellte. Darauf waren zwei Teufelchen zu sehen, die miteinander nicht traditionelle Daseinsformen praktizierten. Der Besitzer wurde wegen LGBT-Propaganda angeklagt. Am meisten hadern die Verleger und Buchhändler mit dem neuen Gesetz, denn  sie wissen weiß nie, in welchem Buch sich diese verfluchten nicht traditionellen Werte verstecken. Sie sind überall. Es existiert bereits eine schwarze Liste mit 250 Titeln, die nichtg zum Verkauf empfohlen werden, sie wird immer länger. Marcel Proust, Haruki Murakami, Oscar Wilde, Steven King und Fjodor Dostojewski zum Beispiel. Es wird nicht lange dauern, bis auch die restlichen Autoren darauf landen. Man muss nur richtig suchen, dann findet man immer was. Meine Tante ging neulich in einen Buchladen in Moskau, um Bücher für ihre 11-jährige Enkelin zu kaufen. „Sie übernehmen die Verantwortung für Ihren Einkauf,“ sagte ihr die Buchhändlerin leise mit Eisen in der Stimme. Na, wofür denn? fragte die Tante lachend, ist ja alles vom Regal „Literatur für Kinder im Grundschulalter“. „Ich habe sie gewarnt,“ antwortete die Verkäuferin noch leiser, “also gucken Sie!  Sie haben eigene Augen!“ „Wonach soll ich denn suchen?“ flüsterte meine Tante fast. „Erotik? Mystik? Gewalt?“ Die Verkäuferin schüttelte nur den Kopf und schaute zu Boden. Zuhause hat die Tante mich angerufen, um sich zu beraten, und wir wissen noch immer nicht, wo sich der Regenbogen versteckt. Es waren drei Bücher: Robinson Crusoe, Der Igel im Nebel und das Tagebuch von Anna Frank.

First, there was Lewis Lectures. Then there was The Finkel Files. Now... there’s this. The Groovenians. A brand new low from your pals at Adult Swim.

From popular street artist Kenny Scharf (subject of a new documentary coming out later this month, too late for me to see before press time) comes this failed pilot about a couple of free-spirit artist types who just wanna act all freely-spirited and artsy. Unfortunately their normy families (they *sorta* seem like brother and sister but they also seem like romantic partners? Not sure if this whole thing is a libertarian pro-incest fable) have DIFFERENT plans for them, and are trying to get them to stop their bohemian rhapsody and CONFORM, CONFORM, CONFORM. 

The pilot tells this enormously simplistic story about two young starry-eyed lovers who just wanna do art and reject pragmatic social constructs of working a bad job and starting a despicable nuclear family. Yes, in the world of the Groovenians there’s no happy medium between expressing your artistic nature and glumly participating in your oppressive capitalistic society. So they flee on a rocket ship to go to a new planet, which is probably called Groovenia. Please, don’t make me rewatch any part of this to find this out.

The show has an impressive cast, including Paul Rubens, Dennis Hopper, Vincent “eBay’s wayward son” Gallo and RuPaul. It’s also got a bitchin’ opening song by the B-52s. But it’s animated all nasty with computer animation, and the script is mind-numbingly awful. It’s not just NOT funny, but it’s also childish and boring. The main characters main motivation is to just be artsy and creative and so you see them doing artsy creative things that seem like they’d just be annoying. Like, if you went to an open mic you’d expect poetry, music, stand-up comedy, mentally-ill street people having an emergency that is mistaken for performance art, etc. But If two beaming dopes just went up on stage dressed like flowers throwing paint around and saying hollow-sounding shit like “CUCKOO-COSMIC, MY MAN!” you would probably blush, boo, or leave (probably all three).

This is the problem with shows or movies or whatever about artist-types: their art is never supposed to be the focus of the story. Just the sheer fact that they’re artistic is what’s supposed to endear you to them. It seems like it’d make all the sense in the world for there to be a particular art project as the focus; some goal that the characters are trying to achieve. Here we’re just asked to root for a personality trait staying in tact. And, we’re supposed to give a shit about this personality trait when it’s threatened. It’s all so shallow.

I personally have known a small handful of people who had an obnoxious penchant for constantly bragging about how artistic they were being, how much art they were doing, etc. Their art is usually unimpressive and lame, and they are usually one of the most insufferable types you can run across. I don’t particularly like what I’ve seen of Kenny Scharf’s art, but I don’t particularly like street art in general so maybe I’m destined to miss the point with him no matter what. But a no-talent artist who has inexplicable success would, of course, have the same attitudes about art that the main characters have in this pilot. I’m just saying, that’s what the script feels like. I am not directly accusing anyone of being bad at art from this glass house.

This aired one more time on Cartoon Network proper, because I think they realized it could pass for a kid’s show. That’s probably a better fit, but it sure did fail there too, didn’t it?

Like it should just exist only as a single still-frame on a youtube video where some monotone-voiced man humorlessly reads the plot summary and credits, and recounts every minor lead from some animator's ancient livejournal post . And then like three years later he makes an update about how it's FINALLY been found and it links to a Vimeo upload of the whole thing that gets about 18 views max. That's my review of The Groovenians.

This is perfect. Yes! And the comments on the video are like, “was hoping this would be as bad as the Rapsittie Kids Christmas, but it’s just boring. Too bad!”

I've never seen Steven Universe but after watching the Groovenians I imagine that's what that show is like. They just replaced Vincent Gallo with Tom Scharpling.

I’m not here to quibble with facts, so I’ll say that you’re “close enough”, except this show by having only one fat character that’s MEAN (the dad voiced by Dennis Hopper) it’s implicitly fatphobic which Steven Universe is not. Every character on Steven Universe is huge

Do you like Garfunkle and Oates? Their first album was a little to "in-jokey" for me but when Slippery When Moist came out in 2012 I think they came into their own, artistically and comedically. The whole album has a rauchy light-hearted sound that really make the whole thing work. They have been compared to Stephen Lynch but I think Garfunkel and Oates have a far-more genial but irreverent tone.

Anti-Crypto Bank Wells Fargo Involved in Billion Dollar Scandal

Last year, Wells Fargo ceased to allow its customers to buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, citing high volatility and risks to its customers. However, now the bank must pay over $3 billion for a fake account scandal and for offering negligent investment advice. Who’s the real risk here? Wells Fargo Fails to Inform Clients About Risks Related to Inverse ETFs American banking giant Wells Fargo agreed to settle the US Securities and Exchanges Commission’s (SEC) charges and pay $35 million. The regulators said that the bank had failed to adequately monitor its financial advisers who used to recommend inverse exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to retail customers. For those unfamiliar, an inverse ETF helps investors profit when an underlying benchmark declines. However, investors don’t have to sell anything short with these instruments. Regulators have warned on various occasions that these instruments may not be suitable for many individual investors. The SEC said in a recent statement that the bank lacked “adequate compliance policies and procedures with respect to the suitability of those recommendations.” Most of the penalty funds will be allocated to harmed investors. The watchdog’s order shows that many Wells Fargo advisers and brokers didn’t even fully understand the risk of losses associated with inverse ETFs when held long-term. The SEC stressed that retail investors might record huge and unexpected losses when holding single-inverse ETFs for longer than a day. Antonia Chion, Associate Director of the regulator’s Enforcement Division, commented: Firms must maintain effective compliance and supervisory programs to ensure that the securities they recommend are suitable for their clients. As a result of Wells Fargo’s failure to meet these important obligations, some of its employees recommended complex instruments to retail investors who did not understand the risks involved. It is not the first time the banking giant has failed to adequately inform investors on these complex products. In 2012, Wells Fargo had to pay $2.7 million to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) for lacking proper supervision over the sale of inverse ETFs. Wells Fargo to Pay $3B to Settle Charges Related to Fake Account Scandal SEC’s charge came only several days after Wells Fargo reached the culmination of its much bigger scandal related to fake accounts. On February 21, the US Justice Department announced that the bank had agreed to pay $3 billion to settle criminal charges and a civil action related to the infamous fake accounts scandal. The bank has mistreated its clients for over 14 years by opening accounts without their consent and knowledge. The practise was discovered in September 2016 and seriously hurt the bank’s reputation. Two CEOs stepped down as a result. Starting from 2002, Wells Fargo’s employees had repeatedly used fraudulent activities to meet unreal sales goals by all means. They opened millions of fake accounts in the clients’ names without their knowledge, signing them up for credit cards and bill payment programs. They also set up fake personal identification numbers, forged signatures, and even went as far as transferring client’s funds without their consent. According to court documents, prosecutors said that there was a pressure-cooker environment at Wells Fargo. The bank’s subordinates were required to reach sales goals that went higher and higher each year, while senior executive didn’t care if they were exaggerated. The few employees and managers who successfully met the sales goals were promoted as examples to follow. Nick Hanna, US attorney for the Central District of California, reportedly said: This case illustrates a complete failure of leadership at multiple levels within the bank. Wells Fargo traded its hard-earned reputation for short-term profits, and harmed untold numbers of customers along the way. Last year, Wells Fargo brought an outsider in as CEO. The new boss, Charles Scharf, is now trying to settle the charges and cut the bank’s expenses. So Why Is Mnuchin Yelling at Cryptos? Many officials promote banks and traditional finance as the only clean environment for doing business and transactions. For them, cryptocurrencies are used by speculators and criminals. Last year, reported that US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin called Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies a national security issue. He said: Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin have been exploited to support billions of dollars of illicit activity like cyber crime, tax evasion, extortion, ransomware, illicit drugs and human trafficking. Many players have attempted to use cryptocurrencies to fund their malign behavior. But what about Wells Fargo or other major banks that have been involved in major scandals related to frauds and manipulations? U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, seen as a possible swing vote in President Trump’s impeachment trial, announced on the Senate floor Tuesday that she will not vote to remove the president.

“This decision is not about whether you like or dislike this president or agree with or oppose his policies or approve or disapprove of his conduct in other circumstances,” Collins said. “Rather, it is about whether the charges meet the very high constitutional standard of treason, bribery or other high crimes or misdemeanors.”

Via is launching an on-demand public transit network in the city of Cupertino

Shuttle startup Via and the city of Cupertino are launching an on-demand public transportation network, the latest example of municipalities trying out alternatives to traditional buses.

The aim is for these on-demand shuttles, which will start with six vans branded with the city of Cupertino logo, to provide more efficient connections to CalTrain and increase access to public transit across the city.

The on-demand shuttle service, which begins October 29, will eventually grow to 10 vehicles and include a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Avis Budget Group, another partner in this service, is the fleet management service that will maintain the vehicles.

In Cupertino, residents and commuters can use the Via app or a phone reservation system to hail a shuttle. The network will span the entire 11-square-mile city with a satellite zone surrounding the Sunnyvale CalTrain station for commuters, Via said Monday. Cupertino Mayor Steven Scharf views the Via on-demand service as the next generation of “what public transportation can be, allowing us to increase mobility while taking a step toward our larger goal of reducing traffic congestion.”

The service, which will run from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, will cost $5 a ride. Users can buy weekly and monthly passes for $17 and $60, respectively.

Via has two sides to its business. The company operates consumer-facing shuttles in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York.

Via also partners with cities and transportation authorities, giving clients access to their platform to deploy their own shuttles. The city of Cupertino, home to Apple, SeaGate Technologies and numerous other software and tech-related companies, is one example of this. Austin’s Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority also uses the Via platform to power the city’s Pickup service. And Via’s platform is  used by Arriva  Bus UK, a Deutsche Bahn Company, for a first- and last-mile service connecting commuters to a high-speed train station in Kent, U.K.

In January, Via announced it was partnering with Los Angeles as part of a pilot program that will give people rides to three busy public transit stations. Via claims it now has more than 80 launched and pending deployments in over 20 countries, providing more than 60 million rides to date.

While city leaders appear increasingly open to experimenting with on-demand shuttles, success in this niche business isn’t guaranteed. For instance, Chariot, which was acquired by Ford, shut down its operations in San Francisco, New York and the UK in early 2019.
