Gentlemen by Karen Knorr (1981 - 1983)

1. These photos were taken for showing the attitudes prevalent among the English establishment in the 1980′s but using humor throughout the photographic set. The photos were taken to show the difference between men and women during this time since all the photos in the set include men dressed in suits and only one photo has a women in a suit in a room full of men during one of the political talks. The quotes below the photos show the purpose, with one saying that men are interested in power while women are interested in being serviced.

2. This exhibit shows that the masculine identity dominated the political scene during the 1980′s in London due to the excessive amount of men in these clubs that had a large amount of influence in Parliament (meaning the government). This left out the women from making decisions which can be seen from Karen Knorr explaining the photo set which says that Margaret Thatcher was not allowed full membership in the Conservative Gentleman's Club ‘The Carlton’ even though she was prime minister and head of the conservative party.

3. I think this set is worth praise for how the men are positioned in the photos as well as their body posture. I chose these three photos due to their posture which is all forward facing (their body is facing the camera so their suit can be seen) but their heads are turned away, as if they are too good for the camera. This represents the masculinity in the sense that they felt above others, especially woman and the photographer was able to capture that perfectly with the posture of these men.

4. Mikhael Subotzky (2004)

a) The photographer took the photo of the prisoners in their sleeping area during the day time, which gives the photo a lot more depth and allows an outsider to see the area in a lighted area. Also, the prisoners seem to be reacting in a natural way with some looking at the camera and others doing things in their own world, unaware of the camera. This gives the image and the prisoners in it more life and make them feel actually human (which is usually not seen as a prisoner characteristic).

b) The photographer is from the area, South Africa, and is trying to capture the social narratives of different areas that are created from his community of people. A large number of his photos were taken in prisons to show the lives of the prisoners and how their everyday is.

Hank Willis Thomas Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America, 1968-2008

a) The photographer chose to have the African American have the basketball and look cool while dribbling while the white man behind him looks like a monster with his hands reached out and his facial expression representing rage. The background shows that the white man ran over all these people and their groceries to try and catch up to the African American which supports the advertisement angle these images are trying to capture.

b) The relationship between the photographer and the set of images is the goal of showing off African Americans to make them seem better than the white people in the photos as a way to get the target audience to support the advertisement and possibly buy the product or support the cause. The images were manipulated digitally to make them seem more crazy and funny to help the audience get more comedic entertainment from them.

Richard Billingham, Ray’s a laugh, 1996

a) The photographer chose to take photos of his family during their daily events during the day and captured the ups and downs of it all. The image I chose shows his father about to fall on the ground, either because he lost balance or he’s drunk. I found that this moment could be seen in any family and people viewing these images probably can feel a connection with their own family since most families have someone who is silly or uncoordinated like his father. Also, the lighting seems natural, making the image feel natural (not made to look this way) and give it more life.

b) The photographer chose to take photos of his family due to their natural comedic nature and the acts they perform at home almost as if they are stage performers. Their relationship is obvious, they are family and all lived in the same home when Richard was a child.

Future food: five “superfoods” that are both healthy and environmentally friendly

There is a saying in Chinese that "people are iron, rice is steel, and a meal is not hungry." Everyone wants to eat and eat well. But with the increase in the Earth's population and the reduction of natural resources. What healthy foods to lose weight can satisfy both health and the need to save the planet?

Moringa

This Creamy Chicken Corn soup recipe is thick, delicious and a comforting bowl of goodness whatever season it may be. Any time is always a good time for some good old chicken and corn soup. This creamy chicken corn soup recipe is my “go to” soup during the colder winter months.

In Cape Town, everyone is most familiar with the traditional vegetable soup and even though I always enjoy my aunt’s split pea and vegetable soup, chicken and corn soup has become my favourite. Growing up, our home was always open to everyone, and everyone who stepped foot in our home was always welcomed with a warm smile followed by a delicious plate of food.

My Mama, Ferial Schroeder and also one of the many woman who helped rear me was an exceptional woman, to say the least. People were simply drawn her from everywhere. She had many friends within her life and many of whom I came to know when I grew older.

This brings me to the origin of this recipe. One of her lifelong friends, Soeriya Logday was in our lives for as long as I can remember. She is also known for her great cooking and hospitality, and her chicken and corn soup recipe was just the BEST. Aunty Soerie knew I was crazy about her soup and each time she prepared it for herself and her family she would always remember to put a few containers in the freezer for me and drop it on a Sunday evening. This soup was just the perfect blend of ingredients and I have no idea whether she changed things up every time she made it but each time it just tasted better.

I was very young when my Dada (Armien Schroeder) passed away, but my Tietie mentioned that when he was sick Aunty Soerie made food for him every day. At that time he was still able to eat, but only Aunty Soerie’s food, and his favorite of everything was her Chicken Corn soup.

She is a second generation South African of Indian descent and spent her formative years in the Bo-Kaap and Malay neighbours. One can clearly see this in her cooking. I never bothered to ask her for the recipe and I’m not even sure why but I managed to create my own version of the soup when I started getting busy in the kitchen during high school and I’m quite pleased with myself. Even though it wasn’t the same as her chicken & corn soup recipe, it was still delicious and yummy!

Once I figured out my own recipe, I prepared it often and even my Mom fell in love with it. This was quite amusing as she is extremely hard to please when it comes to food, especially soup so when she was hooked, I knew it had to be good. In Cape Town we are entering the colder winter months and you know how they say chicken soup is just the cure for everything, yeah, it’s definitely true. This recipe is excellent for the colder months as it is delicious with a thick, creamy consistency. It is easy to prepare and can be substituted for a filling meal.

Everyone loves a good soup and with winter approaching fast and strong I felt that I need to share this creamy chicken corn soup recipe with you. This is by far my favourite soup for the winter time. It is one of those soups that give you this warm, fuzzy feeling inside and it is just so satisfying. It appears as such a luxurious, fancy soup but honestly, the ingredients are so simple and easy to find but still gives you that explosion of taste and warmth.

I make this soup every two weeks during winter, without fail and store it in the freezer. Whenever I feel like having some I just reheat it and add some milk to loosen the texture and voila! This is a recipe that has been with me for the longest time and will remain one of my star soup recipes. I sure do hope you give it a try and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Top tips for making this Chicken Corn soup recipe

Use warm and not boiling water to avoid clumps.

If you experience clumps. Stir until all clumps are removed. If there are still clumps, strain the soup and add it to the pot.

Cream of chicken or cream of cream of mushroom soup can be used. However, the mushroom taste will be very present if the mushroom soup is used and vice versa.

Dried parsley can be used instead of fresh parsley and add it last so the parsley taste is present.

Fresh chillies can be used instead of crushed chillies. However, if you are not keen on hot foods or soups, I would recommend using crushed chillies. It gives a tangy taste which is not overpowering.

Ginger and garlic can be used.

Add milk gradually if the soup is too thick in consistency.

The soup can be refrigerated and can be stored in the freezer and be reheated.

This Creamy Chicken Corn soup recipe is thick, delicious and a comforting bowl of goodness whatever season it may be.

450 grams chicken breast, cubed

5 ml salt, adjust to taste

5 ml crushed chillies (approximately 1 teaspoon)

5 ml black pepper (approximately 1 teaspoon)

225 grams onion, chopped (approximately 1 medium onion)

15 ml crushed garlic (approximately 1 tablespoon)

5 ml fresh grated ginger (approximately 1 teaspoon)

500 ml fresh cream (approximately 2 cups)

53 grams Knorr Cream of Mushroom or Chicken soup (approximately 1 packet)

625 ml water (approximately 2 1/2 cups)

28 grams Knorr Chicken Stock Gel pots (1 gel pot)

28 grams Knorr Vegetable Stock Gel pots (1 gel pot)

250 ml frozen sweetcorn kernels

7.5 ml chopped fresh coriander leaves (approximately 1 1/2 teaspoon)

1/2 lemon, juice only

In a large pan, cook the chicken cubes on medium high heat for 5 mins.

Add salt, pepper and crushed chillies and allow to simmer on medium for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and set the chicken aside until required.

In a separate pot, allow onions, garlic and ginger to simmer on low to medium heat for 5 minutes until golden brown.

Take the cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup and mix this with two and half cups of warm water. Mix this until the soup is completely dissolved and there are no clumps.

Add fresh cream to the onions. Once fresh cream is added, stir continuously to avoid the pot from burning. Then add the soup mixture and stir for 5 mins.

Mix both chicken and vegetable stock gel cups into the creamy mixture and stir until combined.

At this point, the soup will already be thickened up, then add the sweetcorn kernels and stir though thoroughly for 5 mins on medium heat.

Lastly, add chopped coriander leaves. Continue to stir for 5 minutes then turn off the flame.

Allow soup to cool off and add the juice of half a lemon and stir through one last time and serve.

The following additional ingredients or substitutions can be added:

Fresh green, yellow, and red peppers can be added to the onions when sauteeing.

Thyme can be added to the onions too.

Cooked Noodles like angel hair pasta.

Coconut milk can be substituted for the cream to make it dairy free.

Use parsley instead of coriander.

Week 10 Blog Activity 2 “Masculinities, Liberation Through Photography at the Barbican”

Choose one series of photos and explain why and for whom you think these photos were taken.

I think these photos were taken to illustrate that while women are considered equal to men there is still an inequality that exists in positions of power. I believe these photos were taken to highlight to men how women are aware that men in power continue to endorse a patriarchal relationship against women. Not until the last photo in this series do we see a woman. This last photo is interesting in that it is a recreation of the portrait in the background of the photo, the only difference being that one of the men from the portrait is now being represented by a woman in the photo. I think this is symbolic of a small change happening but still representing that power still lies in the good old boy club, that is represented by the Gentlemen’s clubs not allowing women members.

What, overall, can you understand about masculine identity from this exhibit?

The masculine identity portrayed in this exhibit is one of traditional elegance, power and control. The men pictured are all very put together and expressionless while exhibiting their power through their wardrobe, poses and environment. These images reflect an upper class masculinity that is associated with good breeding and an appearance of a civilised environment; meaning emotions aren’t shown and everything is very clean and sterile.

Is there anything about the works you have seen by following these links that you find problematic or that you think is worthy of praise, or both? What makes it so – style, subject matter, a combination of both, other?

The photos in these links can be praised in that they attempted to cover many different aspects of the new masculinities that emerged from the 1960s to the 2000s. When you look across the different series the works capture masculinity across age groups, nationalities, economics, sexual identity and race. The works also used different forms of composition to get their messages across. Mikhael Subotzky’s series captured the race conflict as seen through South African prisoners both in and out of jail in a documentary type format. Both Larry Sultan and Richard Billingham’s series both focus on masculinity in their families, their works while differing in style both use their families as models in their posed photos. Thomas chose to portray race utilising advertisements to depict how race is being commercialised to sell products.

While he is depicted as the largest image in the photo he is isolated and not part of the activities the other people are participating in. The photo symbolises the divide in South Africa between the black man and white society by depicting the white people enjoying a day at the beach while the black man cleans it for them. This photo was taken from straight on, the subject is more in focus than the background with the people in the water. The beach goers are more brightly illuminated against the overcast and fogginess scene in the background, this provides the viewer with a sense of the emotion the subject is experiencing as he watches the people in the waves.

The subject of this photo appears to be photographed with a slight upward angle making him look extremely large compared to other aspects of the photo. The lighting on the subject keeps him in focus and much brighter than the other people in the image which are blurred or out of focus for the most part. The subject is framed by three sets of hands that appear to be trying to stop him or grab his football. While the other people and content of the photo are in various states of falling down or a mess, the main subject is neat and composed compared to them. These elements help us understand the message of the photo by depicting the black athlete as efficient, put together, and focused with no one being able to keep up with him. If this is an ad it implies that either his workout routine, clothing, or his shoes give him the edge to be a superstar.

01 Glenn O’Brien, the pioneering writer who captured the creativity of downtown New York, has died at 70.

Glenn O’Brien passed away on April 7th, after battling a long-term illness. A fixture in the 1980s downtown New York scene, O’Brien corralled its artistic energy into magazines like Andy Warhol’s Interview, serving as its first editor, and articles for Artforum, Rolling Stone, GQ, The New Yorker, and more. From 1978 to 1982, O’Brien also co-created and hosted an influential public-access television show, TV Party, in which he conducted humorous, deadpan interviews with downtown luminaries like Klaus Nomi, David Byrne, Debbie Harry, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. O’Brien collaborated with Basquiat on numerous projects before the painter’s untimely death in 1988; notably, he produced and wrote the screenplay for Downtown 81, a 1981 film that followed 19-year-old Basquiat around the city as he painted its surfaces. Along with extensive writings on art, O’Brien is remembered for his keen sense of style and pioneering men’s fashion journalism. In the 1990s, as contributing editor to Details magazine, he established the celebrated column “Style Guy,” which in 1999 he took to GQ; it ran until 2015.

02 The artist list for Documenta 14 was released on Thursday as previews of the quinquennial exhibition commenced.

Opening to the public on Saturday, April 8, Documenta 14 is split equally across two cities—Athens, Greece and its traditional home of Kassel, Germany—for the first time in the exhibition’s 62-year history. Titled “Learning from Athens,” Polish curator Adam Szymczyk’s iteration of one of contemporary art’s most significant and defining exhibitions features some 150 living artists and collectives, including Nevin Aladağ, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Geta Brătescu, Maria Eichhorn, Douglas Gordon, Hans Haacke, Hiwa K, Daniel Knorr, Ibrahim Mahama, Jonas Mekas, Otobong Nkanga, Pope.L, Georgia Sagri, as well as over 50 artists who have passed away—another break with tradition. The Athens portion takes place across 47 venues in the city and runs through July 16th, while Kassel will take place from June 10th through September 17th at currently undisclosed locations. As is customary for the exhibition, details about either city were scarce until Thursday morning’s press conference in Athens, where the artists for that city’s portion of the show were unveiled in spectacular fashion: All of the participating artists and curators appeared on stage to sing a work by Greek composer Jani Christou.

03 A federal court has ruled that Germany can be sued in the United States over Nazi-looted art, paving the way for the nation to face a U.S. court for the first time in a Nazi restitution case.

In what lawyers for the heirs are calling a landmark decision, last Friday a Washington D.C. District Court ruled that Germany can be sued in U.S. court in the Guelph Treasure case. A collection of 11th to 15th century precious Prussian artifacts valued at over $250 million, the treasure was sold under duress by Jewish art dealers in 1935 to members of the Third Reich. The case had already been heard by a German commission, which found that, though the sales prices were low, the sum wasn’t a result of coercion but of an art market decline. Germany’s attorney, Jonathan Freiman, told Reuters in an email that “this is a dispute that was already resolved on the merits in Germany, and it doesn't belong in a U.S. court.” But the District Court disagreed, instead siding with the argument put forward by the heirs of the dealers: that such a taking constituted a violation of international law and as such, falls under U.S. jurisdiction as an exception to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. Nicholas M. O’Donnell, a partner at Sullivan & Worcester representing the plaintiffs, said in a statement, “We are pleased that the Court agreed that a forced sale for an inadequate sum to agents of Hermann Goering enjoys no immunity from justice.”

04 Renowned Pop artist James Rosenquist has died at age 83.

James Rosenquist passed away in his New York City home on Friday, March 31st, after battling an ongoing illness, according to his wife, Mimi Thompson. Rosenquist is known for working at the vanguard of 1960s Pop Art alongside the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Both celebrated and criticized for his pointedly political approach, Rosenquist, a former billboard painter, frequently adapted commercial imagery to critique American consumerism and militarism. F-111 (1964–1965), one of his most iconic works, depicts a military jet stretched across an 86-foot expanse of more than 50 panels and punctured by the imagery of mid-century advertising. His idiosyncratic, large-scale paintings are in the collections of MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Whitney, among other institutions, and an exhibition of his work will go on view at Germany’s Museum Ludwig later this year.

05 An Andy Warhol “Mao” broke an auction record in China but still came in under its estimate, sparking a debate about the country’s market.

Backed by an irrevocable bid, Warhol’s red silkscreen Mao (1973) sold for HK$ 86 million ($11.1 million) with fees—below the low estimate of HK$ 90 million ($11.6 million)—at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on Sunday, April 2nd. Last sold at auction in 2014 for $12.2 million, the Warhol went to an unnamed Asian collector bidding over the phone. Though the sale was trumpeted for breaking the record for Western contemporary art sold in China, the relatively tepid interest in the Warhol work and a piece by Keith Haring—especially compared to the strong interest in Asian and Japanese art at the auction—signaled to some that the region’s appetite for Western contemporary artists has softened. But there are other reasons the Warhol may have underperformed. Dealers at Art Basel in Hong Kong earlier this month reported that stereotypically “Chinese” material no longer plays well in the region due to collectors’ rapidly expanding education and sophistication—one even singled out red Maos as a fad of the past. Asian buyers, dealers also said, have been compelled to spend more when bidding against Western collectors at sales in New York and London.

06 Groundbreaking artist Lorna Simpson is now represented by Hauser & Wirth.

The international gallery announced Tuesday that it will take on worldwide representation of Simpson. This news precedes Frieze New York in May, where the artist’s work will show at Hauser & Wirth’s booth. “We are honored and delighted to welcome Lorna Simpson into the gallery’s family,” said gallery vice president Marc Payot in a statement. “Her rigor, her passion, and her incredible sensitivity produce not only extraordinary art but also an invitation to engage in a dialogue about identity that we are eager to share.” Since rising to prominence in the late 1980s, Simpson’s mixed-media photographs have scrutinized visual and linguistic representations of race and gender. In 1990, she became the first African-American woman to show her work at the Venice Biennale. Other artists represented by Hauser & Wirth include Zoe Leonard, Roni Horn, and Rashid Johnson.

07 Several museums are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s seminal readymade Fountain by offering free admission on Sunday.

Organized by Duchamp scholar Thomas Girst, several major museums across the globe—including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto—are participating in the initiative, which also has the approval of Association Marcel Duchamp. Visitors who utter the name “R. Mutt” or “Richard Mutt,” the pseudonym Duchamp used to sign Fountain (1917), will be let in free of charge from 3-4 p.m. on April 9th. The timing stems from Duchamp’s notable affinity for trios (he once remarked “three is everything” to a BBC reporter). Inspired by the urinal used for Fountain, some museums will also host Duchampian events in their bathrooms. In what the Philadelphia Museum of Art is calling a “special location,” the institution will host a local theater company’s reenactment of the scandal first caused by the artwork in 1917. “Instead of doing your usual symposium, where people put their heads together and say things that have been said so many times before—most of it self referential and sometimes boring—it’s great to honor the anniversary with somewhat of a Dada gesture,” Girst told Artsy. Visitors can tag their experiences or follow along with the festivities via the hashtag “#Fountain100”.

08 Russia has criminalized images that challenge Vladimir Putin’s masculinity.

The Russian Justice Ministry declared last month that images showing Russian President Vladimir Putin in an unmasculine light constitute “extremist materials.” The ruling stems from an edited image depicting Putin in heavy drag makeup posted last year to the social network VKontakte. Those who share or display such images can now face a fine of 3,000 rubles ($52) or a 15-day detention. Putin is known for his cultivation of a personal mythos of hypermasculinity, with widely publicized photos showing him riding horses shirtless or sporting weaponry. Putin is also notorious for enacting deeply homophobic legislation—including a ban on adoptions by LGBT couples, the legalized detention of suspected gay citizens and tourists, and the classification of potential “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. This has led to allegations about Putin’s sexuality to become a common protest tactic, a trend this legislation is designed to stifle.

09 The FBI has recovered a stolen Norman Rockwell painting, 40 years after its disappearance.

The Rockwell work, which depicts a slumbering child and his dog, was stolen during a home burglary in 1976. Originally purchased for no more than $100, over the intervening years the piece’s value has reached an estimated $1 million. Decades after the theft—and a few years after the original owner, Robert Grant, passed away in 2004—Grant’s son, John, was inspired to rekindle the search. On the 40th anniversary of the work’s theft, the FBI issued a news release and several Philadelphia outlets ran the story. The renewed attention did the trick as the painting had ended up in the possession of an art dealer who was unaware of its provenance. The dealer turned it over to authorities and the FBI subsequently returned the painting to John Grant last week.

10 A court cleared the Polish government’s controversial takeover of the country’s Museum of the Second World War.

The institution will fall under control of the Polish government following Wednesday’s decision by the Polish Supreme Administrative Court. Opened in March in the city of Gdańsk, the museum was conceived to be Europe’s most exhaustive public exhibition on World War II. However, indication that Poland’s right-wing government will seek to alter the museum’s historical direction has ignited a protracted debate. Museum director Pawel Machcewicz curated a permanent exhibition that adopts an international perspective on the histories of Polish citizens, Eastern Europeans, and Nazi Germany’s persecution of Jews. The current Polish administration has long criticized Machcewicz—an appointee of the previous centrist government—placing his future with the museum into question. Poland’s culture ministry has expressed its vision for a more nationalist perspective, one more narrowly focused on Polish losses during the Battle of Westerplatte. Culture Minister Piotr Glinski had previously argued that such a change in conceptual direction would greatly benefit the museum. And on Wednesday, Machcewicz criticized the court’s ruling, expressing his uncertainty over the permanent exhibition’s future integrity.
