Plaza Bistro’s lamb is ‘delizioso paradiso’ and I enjoyed every bite.
Tumblr media
After attending a book-reading event a Readers’ Books, I was walking towards the venerable Swiss Hotel, when a “chef’s special” posted on a chalkboard outside the Plaza Bistro caught my eye.
Lamb is one of my favorite dishes and without even considering the price or anything else, when the server emerged to ask if I had any questions, I simply said (pointing to the chalkboard) “I will have that!”
The next question she asked was, “and how would you like it cooked? Rare, medium-rare?” Without hesitation as if serendipity was an angel, I said, “in whatever way the chef recommends it should be cooked.”
And, with a refreshing glass of scrumptious Sangria, served as the evening summer sun was glimmering I awaited my entree as I sat outside at my along the sidewalk.
The town of Sonoma has a gentle glow in the evening that beckons people to be outside at the plaza. There’s a bit of summer enchantment when it’s late afternoon/evening. A kind of … paseo en el crepúsculo as is said in Spanish.
When my dinner arrived, I was delighted with everything about it. The way it was presented, the portions, the little details of garnish; but especially the aroma.
Lamb with fresh made polenta is a taste-Symphony of flavors and subtle textures. The lamb was tender and cooked just right. I was so enraptured by it that I found myself eating the last of it off the bone with my fingers.
Not wanting this wonderful experience to end, I ordered some pasta. Graciously my server recommended the gnocchi with bolognese sauce. Oh! Another delight! And at this point as I ate the rich traditional combination of beef, pork and veal in a savory sauce, it didn’t occur to me that some of the sauce was splattering onto my treasured French-blue herringbone shirt. At that moment, I didn’t care I was so enthralled by the entire meal-experience.
Tumblr media
The sauce was so good I asked for some bread so to soak up what was left on the plate.
The setting sun, the summer weather all added to the ambiance and culinary excursion that was Plaza Bistro that evening on July 20 when the chef presented his Lamb and polenta special.
Yes! I had dessert and it was the “flour-less” chocolate torte - a chocolate lovers dream realized. Very satisfying!
Tumblr media
The fresh boysenberries on the side make for an excellent complement, pairing to the rich chocolate.
Anyone interested in visiting Wine Country and wants to dine in a spot like historic old Sonoma, Plaza Bistro located at 420 First Street, East right on the plaza is the place.

A New Holiday Tradition for the town of Sonoma
Tumblr media
The 1200 block of Grove Street is a homespun holiday spectacular to rival that of the annual lighted snowmen at Cornerstone on Arnold Drive. “Dillonland - The Jolliest Place on Earth,” is a holiday menagerie of an array of characters and storylines from some of the most well-known and beloved genres of the past 70 years.
Tumblr media
“Our son Dillon loves Christmas very much and for the past five years we as a family have been putting this together,” said Dillon’s mother, Karen Stall.
With Dillon as the visionary, his father Gary as the construction worker/builder and mom Karen as the artist/painter, the decorative-creativity keeps expanding.
Tumblr media
“Dillon comes up with the designs and we follow along,” said Karen. In 2020 is when Dillon put his best and most work into it, establishing it as something to take the time to see.
There has been many local/neighborhood decorated houses and blocks in Sonoma over the years. But very few like “Dillonland” where people can actually walk through it and sit and enjoy for as long as they want.
Tumblr media
Dillon wasn’t there when this reporter on assignment for the Sonoma Valley Sun stopped by the evening after Christmas. “He wanted to take a break,” said Karen, as the family starts preparing in November, opening the day after Thanksgiving.
‘Dillonland’ was closed on Christmas Day, much to the disappointment to local Sonoma residents like Mandy Cohen who made the effort to include it on the annual drive around to see the holiday lights. “I usually drive around my neighborhood after Christmas dinner and then to the plaza to see the lights,” said Cohen. “And when friends told me about the wonderful light display at Grove Street, I was disappointed and a bit puzzled that it was closed on Christmas,” she exclaimed.
In addition to being fans of Christmas, the Stall Family are big sports fans. “Sorry we weren’t open on Christmas,” said Karen to Cohen. “We didn’t want to miss the Forty-Niners game on Christmas.”
Tumblr media
Amid the many different displays, which include different types and favorites; from The Grinch to Disney, to Charlie Brown and Snoopy, there’s a spot for the Forty-Niners.
Even though the Forty-Niners lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day, the Stall Family is loyal. “Maybe, next year if the Forty-Niners have a game again on Christmas we will watch the game right here,” Karen said as she pointed to the large inflatable screen streaming the holiday classic movie ‘A Christmas Story.’ “That might be a great idea, get the sports fans out here too,” she said.
Tumblr media
It’s their dedication and loyalty as a family and to the community that makes ‘Dillonland’ a unique and one-of-a-kind local holiday experience. Located at 1229 Grove Street, Dillonland is open from 5:30 to 9:00 PM in the evening for rest of the holiday season until Jan 7, 2024. “We will be here unless it rains,” said Karen. Limited parking is available directly across the street. For more details follow on Facebook and on Instagram @deckthehallswiththestalls.

Today I
Remembered to turn off the therapy lamp.
Did yoga
Tumblr media
Finished coloring my hair
Did my nails.
Alienated a couple building kids by politely requesting they wait to play lacrosse in the parking lot. It’s not as if they don’t have an actual yard & playground on their side.
Drove to Sonoma. Picked up Robbie & the printer he gave me.
Went down to the Plaza to see my old friend Glenn sing. Hadda tell somebody “no, if I wanted to dance with people I’d be on the dance floor”
Tumblr media
I used to go see the drummer sing every Sunday at the old Sweetwater, when this town was cool. We’ve had our Moments.
Met a very friendly Frenchie named Wallace. Told his people they need a mastiff named Grommit.
Left my phone at Safeway when I went in for ice cream. Also forgot it’s cold here.

California Governor - $159 Million - Preserve 638 Affordable Homes
Tumblr media
California Governor Newsom Announces $159.9 Million to Preserve 638 Affordable Homes. SACRAMENTO, CA (STL.News) In an ongoing effort to preserve affordable homes for lower-income Californians priced out of the market, California Governor Gavin Newsom Friday announced more than $159.9 million in awards to keep an additional 638 homes affordable for up to 55 more years.  Since 2022, $315.3 million has been awarded to preserve 1,364 affordable homes, assuring housing for nearly 27,000 people over the life of the developments’ affordability agreements.  These investments guarantee that rents in these thousands of homes remain affordable to low-income Californians for up to 55 more years rather than permanently transforming into market-rate units. What Governor Newsom said: “As California faces a critical housing shortage, it is vital that we use every tool in our toolbox to build more housing faster and preserve affordability for individuals and families struggling with the high cost of rent.  Every Californian deserves a place to call home, and we are aggressively working to secure more affordable housing throughout the state.” ABOUT THE FUNDING: Today’s awards are part of the state’s Portfolio Reinvestment Program (PRP), managed by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).  The program looks to extend affordability agreements by extending loan maturity dates, providing new low-interest long-term loans for the rehabilitation of housing, and providing forgivable loans to support short-term operating subsidies. “As we work to expand the construction of new housing, it is critical that we also preserve, invest in and maintain existing affordable housing in communities—it prevents displacement, is cost efficient and improves neighborhoods,” said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez.  “These awards announced today by Governor Newsom will allow affordable housing community developers to improve the quality of living and extend the life of these buildings for many more years by making critical repairs such as fire and life safety improvements to common areas and new roof installations.” BIGGER PICTURE: Preserving existing affordable homes is part of the multi-pronged strategy laid out in the California’ Statewide Housing Plan, which calls for 2.5 million new homes by 2030, with at least one million of those homes being affordable to Californians at lower income levels. “Keeping safe, quality, affordable homes from reverting to market rate is a key component of any strategy to address the crisis of homelessness our state is facing,” said HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez.  “These strategic reinvestments – that ensure HCD-funded properties remain livable and affordable for the foreseeable future – will offer tens of thousands of Californians the housing stability and supportive services they need to be successful in a life lived off the street.” The awards announced today include: - Mission Housing Development Corporation received $12,950,076 to preserve 49 units at Dunleavy Plaza in the County of San Francisco. - Abode Communities received $26,248,920 to preserve 144 units at Centennial Place in the County of Los Angeles. - Eden Housing, Inc., received $12,075,450 to preserve 45 units at Sparks Way Commons in the County of Alameda.  They also received $5,719,492 to preserve 21 units at Hope Villa Esperanza, which was built in 1999 in the County of Santa Clara.  A third award of $19,421,950 will preserve 76 units at the Vista Verde Apartments in Santa Cruz County. - 5169 Hollywood Boulevard received $11,217,661 to preserve 44 units at Kingswood Apartments in the County of Los Angeles. - Golden Empire Affordable Housing, Inc. received $2,996,989 to preserve 16 units at Park Real Apartments in Kern County. - Community Support Network received $396,103 to preserve 6 units at DeTurk, a group home in Sonoma County. - Lutheran Social Services of Northern California received a total award amount of $4,520,577 to aid in the rehabilitation of three projects to preserve 24 units, all located in the County of San Joaquin. - Chinatown Community Development Center, Inc. received $9,821,259 to preserve 82 units at Clayton Hotel and $9,976,420 to preserve 41 units at St. Claire Residence, both in the City of San Francisco. - The John Stewart Company received $44,621,770 to preserve 90 units at The Sequoia in the City of Sacramento. Additional funding is still being offered, with a notice of availability set to be released in the early fall of this year.  For more information, please visit the Portfolio Reinvestment Program (PRP) California Department of Housing and Community Development. National Take a Walk in the Park Day
When cities are being designed one of the primary things they ensure  to make space for is city parks. From small parks the size of just a  couple of blocks to large ones that cover acres of land, city planners  know the importance of providing green areas for people to go.
National Take a Walk in the Park Day celebrates these small  excursions and the differences they can make to our mental, physical,  and emotional health.
History of National Take a Walk in the Park Day
This day was founded to help people reconnect with the wilder spaces  within our civilized world. Thousands of people all over the country  walk in local parks, exploring the wildlife and beauty of the natural  world around them.
During these walks many opt to bring cameras so they can take  pictures of the beauty they find, others opt to bring a book and enjoy  the peace of the natural space. Jogging, playing games, drawing pictures  from nature, all of these are things people do when they go out and  enjoy time in the park.
Getting out into nature has been proven to have a number of  therapeutic effects on those who take the time to do it. Their stress  levels go down, their heart and mind feel refreshed, their creativity  gets inspired, and they become more productive at work. All of this  doesn’t even include the physical health benefits they get from walking  in the park.

The Spot where Sausage is Supreme and Charcuterie is above all the rest. Among the best places to eat at the historic plaza in the town of Sonoma is The Sausage Emporium. Few people know the real details about sausage and “cold cuts” as owner Miranda Ives does.
Tumblr media
She also knows how to pair beverages with the right combination of sausage and meat. This reporter had the opportunity to chat briefly with Ives while enjoying a favorite of mine from the regular menu.
The Vietnamese Banh Mi, made with The Sausage Emporium’s own pork sausage, paté, house pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, fresh mint, jalapeño and sriracha creme is yummy. What surprised me was the fresh baked bread-roll (actually it’s a short baguette) it was served in. The aroma alone made for an exceptional culinary experience as that baguette was soft yet slightly crisp and warm. The reviews and ratings for the Sausage Emporium are high and raves.
The harmony of hot, spicy and subtle tangy flavors was very satisfying. The other aspect to The Sausage Emporium I noticed is that there’s a variety of sausages and meats that can gratify just about any palate.
Being in Wine Country, Ives knows her stuff and can prepare a dish that will do more than impress; it takes the taste buds to new levels of experience. Being able to pair a particular wine with a food is a talent and I think it’s crucial.
For example, there are many wonderful wineries and wine-makers in the Sonoma Valley that are eager to have their wine served at a restaurant. Yet in efforts to sell wine and promote it, few tasting rooms take the time to really pair food with what they want to sell.
A really fine Cabernet Savignon like the one I had at the Zina Lounge at the Ledson Hotel, a glass of something sparkling at SIGH, or a Petite Syrah such as the one offered at St. Francis upvalley in Kenwood needs to have something exceptional to go along with it.
Ordinary grocery store cold-cuts truly don’t do a fine wine justice. I’m sorry to say that some of the tasting rooms at the plaza and elsewhere don’t understand this fact. A Sonoma or Napa Valley wine that can truly rival that of any in Europe must have a good food pairing to highlight its own flavor and regional characteristics.
Certainly Sonoma and Napa area can make fine cheeses but quality meat, specifically a sausage or local bologna? Hmm! Here’s where Ives and her staff can help. Charcuterie board servings are popular and The Sausage Emporium makes them.
Not many people know this but to make real bologna or mortadella, prosciutto, etc. is a “slow-food” art. Oscar Meyer or Hormel and others does only the mass produced type; of which Americans are used to.
Pepperoni for instance is essentially an American version of salami, something close to what Italians might call ‘salame piccante.’
As Ives knows, it’s a generic term that means “spicy salami.” It’s made from beef and cured pork mixed together and then seasoned with a blend that usually includes paprika, garlic, black pepper, crushed red pepper, cayenne pepper, mustard seed, and fennel seed.
Ives of course has her own recipe. Still, just about every pepperoni producer uses a different mix and ratio of ingredients, but paprika is always present. The paprika is the ingredient that give pepperoni its color. And most likely according to food historians, perhaps paprika had something to do with the name “pepperoni.”
Only someone like Ives would know that and provide a customer a more discerning understanding of what really good pepperoni is.
Tumblr media
For foodies it’s also important to know that The Emporium’s ability to pair food with beverages doesn’t stop at wine and beer. Sausage Emporium serves delicious coffee and is even promoting its own holiday blend just for the winter season called “BeanWrks.”
Tumblr media
The Sausage Emporium is Women-owned and operated, with an unpretentious, casual dining area in a memorable and friendly atmosphere, serving breakfast and lunch, along with as mentioned charcuteries, retail sausages, salumi, local wine, champagne, craft beer, and cider.
Open Wednesday through Sunday The Sausage Emporium begins serving breakfast at 8:30 AM and closes after lunch at 3:00 PM. Weekends- Saturday & Sunday doors open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. See The Sausage Emporium for website details.

Napa to Sonoma, California Jan 2023 — Sonoma is smaller than we expected and quaint with the central businesses hugging a central plaza. There are quite a few historic buildings that the state parks have done a wonderful job of preserving. We learned a lot about the area here and mulled it all over while swishing down tasty tapas at Tasca Tasca. Ole! Really liked this electric tuk tuk company some guy started here. It would be so fun to have one of these in AZ.
