Chariot struggled with ridership, spokesperson Erin Simpson says. Its 14-seat commuter shuttle services, which run limited, public routes in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, and the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in London, will shut down February 1. Chariot’s newer initiative, running vans for specific companies, will end in March. Some of its 625 employees could be offered positions within Ford.

As those changes continue, it has become clear that the mobility services delivered by Chariot over the past five years will not be a sustainable solution going forward.”
In recent months, the Ford subsidiary had tried to adjust its business to fit customers’ needs. Though it continued to run its San Francisco-based commuter network, open to any member of the public, it had focused its business on enterprise solutions, signing contracts with private businesses that wanted to give its employees other options for getting to or from work. As recently as December, Chariot CEO Dan Grossman told WIRED that the company was focusing on solving first mile/last mile problems—helping companies connect their offices to major commuter train or bus lines. Grossman also said the company had thought about growing the size of some vans, perhaps up to 28 seats. “We don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket,” he noted then.
Ford spokesperson Karen Hampton says lessons learned from Chariot’s run will inform the automaker’s larger mobility business. Bridj, which promised on-demand shuttle services, ceased American operations in early 2017. Shared rides company Via still operates in Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC, but has diversified—it also runs a software business. Meanwhile, Uber itself continues to burn through millions and millions in funding every year, even as it preps for an IPO in 2019.
Chariot struggled with ridership, spokesperson Erin Simpson says. Its 14-seat commuter shuttle services, which run limited, public routes in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, and the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in London, will shut down February 1. Chariot’s newer initiative, running vans for specific companies, will end in March. Some of its 625 employees could be offered positions within Ford.
Turns out transporting people really is very hard. In dense cities, it’s competitive: Riders might choose to use public transit, ride-hail, or even the bike- and scooter-share networks that now blanket so many city sidewalks. In less dense places, the transportation business is pricey: Dispatching vehicles to retrieve far-flung passengers takes time and plenty of fuel. And transportation firms generally must contend with regulators, another oft-expensive hurdle. In October 2017, California briefly shut down Chariot’s operations in the state after discovering some drivers did not have proper licenses.
Chariot, which in San Francisco was charging $3.80 for off-peak rides and $5 during rush hour, always had a difficult road ahead. In fact, it hadn’t expanded its public commuter transit options in at least a year. “The microtransit companies would never say this, but you could see from their actions that a market for a public transit service paid for through fares was, at best, very limited,” says Bruce Schaller, a former New York City transportation official who now runs a transportation consultancy.
Furthermore, Chariot could only fit so many fare-paying riders into its vans. It owns those vehicles, and its drivers are unionized. “Running a van cheaper than a bus, per passenger, is a daunting idea,” adds Schaller.
As Chariot put it in a blog post announcing its death: “In today’s mobility landscape, the wants and needs of customers and cities are changing rapidly. As those changes continue, it has become clear that the mobility services delivered by Chariot over the past five years will not be a sustainable solution going forward.”
In recent months, the Ford subsidiary had tried to adjust its business to fit customers’ needs. Though it continued to run its San Francisco-based commuter network, open to any member of the public, it had focused its business on enterprise solutions, signing contracts with private businesses that wanted to give its employees other options for getting to or from work. As recently as December, Chariot CEO Dan Grossman told WIRED that the company was focusing on solving first mile/last mile problems—helping companies connect their offices to major commuter train or bus lines. Grossman also said the company had thought about growing the size of some vans, perhaps up to 28 seats. “We don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket,” he noted then.
Ford spokesperson Karen Hampton says lessons learned from Chariot’s run will inform the automaker’s larger mobility business. That includes “routing, dispatch, customer interfaces” at Ford Commercial Solutions, its fleet telematics and data arm; GoRide, its nonemergency medical transportation division; Ford Pass, its mobile application for vehicle owners; and “even the self-driving businesses we are building,” according to Hampton. The company has said that it will have a fully automated vehicle in commercial service by 2021.
While Chariot’s demise proves the transit business is a tricky one, tech-enabled shuttle services aren’t dead. Public transit agencies—including Los Angeles’ Department of Transportation—are still experimenting with on-demand options, which riders beckon with a call or tap of an app. Agencies hope these sorts of services might help them cut down the costs of providing public transit in areas with little demand. Flexible van services and jitneys continue to operate in US cities too, including New York City’s robust, decades-old dollar van system.
Ford, meanwhile, already has its hands in the latest transit hotness. In November, it acquired startup Spin. The Detroit stalwart has joined the scooter game.

Daimler and Via to launch ride-sharing shuttle service in Europe
Minivans, while not the most exciting form of transportation, could have a role to play in society's shift away from car ownership. Daimler, the company behind Mercedes-Benz, is teaming up with Via to launch a new ride-sharing service across Europe. Like UberPool, it will be an on-demand system that allows passengers to set their own pick-up points and destinations through a smartphone app. Mercedes-Benz will supply the minivans, while Via — which already runs a similar service in New York City, Chicago and Washington DC — manages the software. It's basically a bus service, but with dynamic routes and no predetermined stops.
The new transport system will launch in London later this year. The pair then hope to license the underlying technology to public transport operators in Europe. It's not clear if that offering will include a fleet of Mercedes-Benz vans, or whether they expect operators to supply their own vehicles. Regardless, the two companies believe Via's "On-Demand Shuttle Operating System" will allow cities to "improve mobility while reducing congestion, and without incurring any additional infrastructure costs." Daimler is so confident that it's investing $50 million in the joint venture.
Via is already experimenting in Europe. In March, the company partnered with UK bus operator Arriva on "ArrivaClick," a ride-sharing service in Sittingbourne. The service still seems to be running, however the area is too small to pose any real threat to Uber and city-focused services such as Gett, Kabbee and the Daimler-backed MyTaxi. In London, Daimler and Via will also be up against Citymapper, the navigation app-turned bus operator. Following a trial in May, the company has decided to launch a weekend bus service. Unlike Via and UberPool, however, this will be a traditional bus experience with a clearly defined route and stops.

Apple's $5 billion 'spaceship' campus is ready for takeoff — but some employees will be left behind (AAPL)
Apple employees are currently moving into Apple Park, the company's new $5 billion headquarters. 
However, not all Apple employees will move into what's called "the ring" by insiders. 
The campus will hold 12,000 employees. Apple has 25,000 employees in the Bay Area. 
Apple's new $5 billion "spaceship" campus has captivated the world's attention. But even as Apple celebrates the opening of its gleaming UFO-like headquarters, many company employees are coming to terms with a hard truth: There's not room on the ship for everyone.
Who gets a ticket and who gets left behind has become a subject of speculation, conversation and some grumbling at the world's largest company. 
The new building, which Apple insiders refer to as "the ring" rather than the spaceship, is about three miles from Apple's current Cupertino, Calif. headquarters at One Infinite Loop. The fact that the new building can't house everyone isn't exactly a surprise to anyone who did the math: Apple says the new campus will hold 12,000 employees. Apple currently has 25,000 in the Bay Area, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal. 
But in keeping with its penchant for secrecy, Apple has not widely discussed its plans for the move internally, leaving many employees in the dark. Some groups at Apple know they're moving but are still waiting for their move-in date; others suspect they're not getting an invite to the "ring" simply because they haven't been told of any plans to move.
"You don't get told things here unless you need to know, and if you aren't moving, you don't need to know," one Apple employee told Business Insider. 
Employees who know they're headed to Apple Park excitedly chat about the perks awaiting them at their new home, while others commiserate about being excluded, according to Apple insiders Business Insider spoke to.
Haves and have-nots
The split between the movers and those left behind has also created a sense of two classes within Apple. 
Apple's most valuable talent will be moving to the ring, including executives like CEO Tim Cook, teams full of software developers, and Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive's design teams, which will get one of the nicest spots on the fourth floor of the building. 
But less important divisions, like App Store workers and retail operations, are expected to remain in satellite offices scattered around Silicon Valley. This means those people will often have to travel using Apple's shuttle service to another office just to attend meetings.
"The rest of us will still be taking silver van after silver van from building to building for all of our meetings, wasting time, gas, and space," the Apple employee told Business Insider. "You would think one of the main points of a $5 billion campus would be to bring more people together in the same place."
As it is, some Apple employees already take an Apple bus to headquarters, and then have to take a second shuttle to their offices. In Cupertino you can regularly see silver Ford and Toyota vans traveling the roads, ferrying Apple employees from one building to another. (There are some white Lexus SUVs in the shuttle fleet, but those are currently for testing, and are part of Apple's self-driving car project, as first reported by the New York Times.)
Apple executives have cited the existing constellation of scattered offices as one of the reasons for the new headquarters.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the new campus move.
"We didn't make Apple Park for other people"
There are other reasons some groups are excluded from the ring, or Apple Park, as the facility is officially known. Many of Apple's "special projects" groups, working on technologies in health, augmented reality, and robotics, are housed separately from Apple headquarters, most likely for security and secrecy reasons. 
And Apple's online services group, under senior vice president Eddy Cue, has opted to take over Apple's old headquarters, Bloomberg reported in 2016. 
The 2.8-million-square-foot ring building was the final project of Apple cofounder Steve Jobs, who envisioned it as " best office building in the world." The circular, open space and massive windows are intended to foster collaboration and innovation among employees. 
Not all Apple employees are fans of the new set up though. Some Apple engineers, accustomed to working in small offices, fear the open floor plan will be too loud and distracting, the Wall Street Journal reported in July. And Apple blogger John Gruber relayed a rumor earlier this year that one group at Apple insisted on having its own, more private building, adjacent to the ring.
Apple's Ive, who spearheaded the construction of the new headquarters, has expressed bewilderment that the company's new offices have been criticized by outsiders. 
"We didn't make Apple Park for other people," Ive said in interview at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC earlier this month. "So I think a lot of the criticisms ... are utterly bizarre, because it wasn't made for you. And I know how we work, and you don't."
Fruit trees, theaters and buzz
Among the perks for employees at Apple Park are new food and gym facilities, a state of the art theater for on-campus presentations, and a giant garden stocked with fruit trees. At some satellite offices, by contrast, the only lunch options are from vending machines. 
Special events, like Apple's semi-regular "beer bashes," will take place at Apple Park, meaning that employees at satellite offices have to travel to take advantage of some of Apple's best perks.
"Obviously very first world problems, but having such disparities in quality of workplace environment across the company creates an awkward hierarchy and lack of a unified company culture," says the insider. "Facebook, Google, Airbnb (magnitude smaller, I know) crush Apple on this front."
Apple continues to build in Silicon Valley. It's building a "second spaceship" in Sunnyvale, and has been buying and developing a lot of properties. And Apple has grown rapidly since 2011, when the plans for Apple Park were completed. 
But as rivals and neighbors start to build their giant new campuses, the competition for top talent in Silicon Valley will heat up. It's undeniable that Apple Park is a huge perk — for the employees who get to work there.
