Day After Quitting Congress, Ashok Chavan To Join BJP Today
A day after he quit the Congress, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is set to join the BJP later today. "Today around 12-12:30, I am going to start a new journey of my political career, I am going to join BJP," Mr Chavan told news agency ANI.
Tumblr media
He had yesterday told the media that he will take a decision on his next step in a couple of days. Deputy Chief Minister and the state's top BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, it is learnt, will welcome Mr Chavan into the party. Mr Chavan's aide Amar Rajurkar, who resigned as MLC with him, will also join the BJP today.
Sources have said the former Chief Minister may be offered a Rajya Sabha seat. That would also explain his decision to join the BJP a day after he resigned from the Congress and the Assembly: time for filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls is running out.
"I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and the Congress primary membership. I have not decided to join any party. I will clear my stand on joining a party after two days," Mr Chavan had told reporters yesterday.
Mr Chavan's exit is yet another blow to Maharashtra Congress months ahead of state polls and the general election. Earlier, key Congress leader, Milind Deora, quit the party and joined the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. Baba Siddique too left and moved to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole played a key role in his decision. Speaking to the media yesterday, he had suggested that he was upset over the delay in finalising seat-sharing within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with just months left for the polls.
Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said that the former Chief Minister was upset over the working style of a Congress leader in Maharashtra. He did not name any leader. "He (Chavan) had approached the top leadership. Had his complaint been taken seriously, this situation would not have happened," Mr Nirupam said.
Congress leaders have taken swipes at Mr Chavan following his decision. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh took a "washing machine" jab -- washing machine is an oft-repeated reference the Congress uses to accuse the BJP of stalling criminal investigations against Opposition leaders who switch to their side.
"When friends and colleagues leave a political party that has given them much -- perhaps much more they deserved -- it is always a matter of anguish. But to those who are vulnerable THAT Washing Machine will always prove more attractive than ideological commitment or personal loyalties," Mr Ramesh said. "These betrayers don't realise that their exit opens up vast new opportunities to those whose growth they have always stunted," he added.
Maharashtra Congress chief Patole said it is "unfortunate that leaders who have got everything are leaving the Congress party and ideology".
The son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in Nanded region. His exit comes at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress -- faces two tall poll challenges.
Ashok Chavan has had an eventful political journey so far. Starting out as a student leader during his college days, he went on to hold key posts in the Congress, including Maharashtra Congress chief and a member of the Congress Working Committee. He has served as an MP from Nanded on two occasions and been a member of both Houses of the state legislature.
After serving as state minister, he was chosen for the Chief Minister post after Vilasrao Deshmukh stepped down in the aftermath of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. The Congress retained him on the top post after the 2009 state polls. The stint was, however, short as Mr Chavan was forced to step down amid corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

Ashok Chavan Latest To Quit Congress After Milind Deora, Baba Siddique
In a big blow to the Congress in Maharashtra months ahead of the general election and state polls, former chief minister and former MP Ashok Chavan resigned from the party's primary membership amid reports that he was in talks with the BJP. The senior leader may get a ticket to the Rajya Sabha, according to sources.
Tumblr media
Mr Chavan, who represents Bhokar in the Assembly, met Speaker Rahul Narvekar and handed in his resignation. If he joins the BJP, it will be the second big switchover in Maharashtra after Congress leader Milind Deora quit the party last month and joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Earlier, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had been asked if Mr Chavan is joining the party. "I heard about Ashok Chavan from media. But only thing I can say now is that several good leaders from Congress are in touch of BJP. Those leaders who are connected with the masses are feeling suffocated in Congress. I am confident that some big faces will join Congress," he had then said.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole on selection of candidates may have played a major role in his decision to switch sides.
Son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in the Nanded region and this switch may hurt the Congress in the upcoming polls. This also plays out against the backdrop of the tall poll challenge facing the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress.

The Confluence of Faith and Politics: An Insight into the Diverse Invitees of the Ram Mandir Inauguration Ceremony
In what is anticipated to be a historic and culturally significant event, the ‘Pran Pratishta’ ceremony of Lord Ram’s idol in Ayodhya has garnered attention not only for its religious importance but also for its diverse and eclectic guest list. Scheduled for January 22, the ceremony marks the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and the invitees represent a unique blend of faith, politics, and global representation.
Tumblr media
Over 7,000 individuals have received invitations, ranging from political figures and international guests to ordinary people who have made extraordinary contributions to the Mandir Movement. The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has meticulously curated this list, ensuring inclusivity and diversity.
The international guest list for the event underscores its global significance, with over 100 guests from 53 countries, including the US, the UK, Europe, Australia, and Africa. Among the distinguished invitees are oncologist Bharat Barai and Nokia Bell Labs-CTO fellow Abhay Asthana. Bharat Barai, known for his support of the BJP and efforts to strengthen India-Israel relations, notably lobbied for Narendra Modi’s visa clearance in 2014, overcoming a 10-year visa ban.
The ceremony also exemplifies inclusivity by extending an invitation to Iqbal Ansari, who fought a legal case in support of the Babri Masjid. Despite his past association with the mosque, Ansari has actively supported the construction of the Ram Mandir, symbolizing a collective move towards unity.
Another remarkable inclusion is Mohammed Habib, a Muslim karsevak who participated in the Ram Mandir agitation. His emotional response to the invitation reflects the historic nature of the consecration ceremony and the sense of unity it embodies.
The entertainment industry is well-represented by actors Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia, known for their iconic portrayal of Ram and Sita in the TV serial ‘Ramayan.’ Their presence adds a nostalgic touch, evoking memories of the widely watched show in the late 1980s.
Spiritual leaders, including Dalai Lama, Mata Amritanandamayi, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, and Jaggi Vasudev, will grace the occasion with their presence. Business tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and Ratan Tata, along with figures from Bollywood and cricket, further diversify the guest list.
However, the event has not been without its share of political complexities. The opposition, particularly the CPM and the Trinamool Congress, faces a dilemma over participation, with concerns about the politicization of religious belief. Even the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena has chosen to stay away, labeling it a BJP political rally.
The Congress, a key constituent of the INDIA bloc, grapples with a challenging decision regarding its participation, wary of potential electoral repercussions. Invitations extended to senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, have added a political dimension to the event.
The meticulously designed invitations, comprising the main invitation card, a ‘Pran Pratishtha’ program card, and a booklet detailing the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement, reflect the elaborate nature of the ceremony. The schedule outlines the commencement of the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ puja at 11:30 am on January 22, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the guests at 12:30 pm.
As the nation awaits this historic event with bated breath, the diverse guest list stands as a testament to the inclusivity and cultural richness surrounding the consecration of the Ram Mandir. The ceremony is poised to be a confluence of religious fervor, political significance, and global representation, embodying the essence of a unified India.

Why Amit Shah had to personally visit and mollify Baba Ramdev
Tumblr media
BJP President Amit Shah meets Baba Ramdev in Delhi on June 4
Why did BJP President Amit Shah have to visit yoga guru Baba Ramdev to seek his ‘support’, when Ramdev has often boasted that he was one of the forces behind BJP’s 2014 election victory?
BJP president Amit Shah calls on yoga guru Baba Ramdev was the breaking news flashing on Monday, June 4. But why should that be big news when Ramdev is part of the Modi-Shah inner circle? Is he not the brain behind the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21? Has his Patanjali business not seen incredible growth since Narendra Modi came to power?
Even more surprising was what Shah told media after the meeting, presented as part of his ongoing “Sampark For Samarthan” campaign: "I came to Baba Ramdev for his support. He patiently heard everything I had to say”. In other words, the second-most powerful political leader in India “came to” the businessman-baba seeking “support”. And the Baba was gracious enough to listen patiently.
The BJP chief said further: “I told him about all the work we have done during the last four years of our government under Modiji. I also gave him literature about our achievements so far. I sought his help and guidance so that we can spread the message to crores of his followers". The BJP President also made sure to tweet photos of himself beside Baba Ramdev, performing gau seva for the cows at the Patanjali Ashram in Delhi.
It is time to pause, scratch one’s head and ask: What’s going on? What is all this extreme courtesy all about? Did not Ramdev declare Narendra Modi to be a Rashtra Rishi not so long ago during live TV coverage of the inauguration of the Patanjali Research Institute in Haridwar? Has the yoga guru not often boasted that he was the spiritual and financial force behind the 2014 election victory?
Yes to everything. But it seems times have changed. Perhaps the guru-shishya relationship has been under a bit of strain of late. Ramdev has not been getting the attention he deserves. His Patanjali business ventures have slowed down. His applications for launching three news TV channels were kept pending for almost a year, before being finally cleared only two weeks ago by the new I&B Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore, that too after he complained in public about the delay.
Also, while Ayush Minister Sripad Yesso Naik has been periodically updating Ramdev about this year’s Yoga Day preparations, the yoga guru has not been given the status of star organiser of the show.
Ramdev’s unhappiness clear as Patanjali faces new challenges
More clues lie in recent media reports about the Patanjali Group’s business performance, especially in pink paper financial dailies, saying Patanjali is approaching the limit of its growth potential. They have attributed the temporary slowdown in sales growth in 2017 to the Patanjali management’s inability to handle competition in the marketplace.
The real reason is that, as Ramdev’s close aide Patanjali owner and MD Acharya Balkrishna has said, Modi’s policies have had an adverse impact. Drastic decisions like demonetisation and GST affected all packaged goods companies, especially in the herbal personal care segment.
There have also been media reports about quality issues with some Patanjali products. None of the BJP ministers have come to Ramdev’s rescue by denying that Patanjali products suffer from quality issues and that customers, especially in the urban areas, are shifting back to established brands because of that.
Another reason for the stagnant sales, say analysts, is that Patanjali expanded too fast and its distribution network and retail outlets chain are not efficient enough to handle the growth volume.
But Brand Ramdev is powerful enough to drive sales, yet BJP spokesmen have not been briefed to counter the disinformation against a pure and noble swadeshi industry struggling to fight against ‘foreign’ giants like Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India and ITC Ltd, all of whom have shown rapid growth!
Isn’t it the patriotic duty of the Ayush ministry to popularise the practice of yoga and the use of ayurvedic products. Instead of that, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence was sent to seize 50 tonnes sandalwood being exported to China by Patanjali!
The yoga guru felt it necessary to tell media persons that “Lalu is not a criminal. He is a friendly man and an astute politician”. That is probably also why BJP president Amit Shah had to rush to call on Baba Ramdev and seek his blessings for the 2019 elections
It was because of all these and other reasons that Baba Ramdev decided to travel to Patna on May 11 to congratulate Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on his son's marriage and blessed the groom Tej Pratap Yadav by tying a "raksha sutra" sacred thread around his neck to cast off evil eyes and also to blessed the bride Aishwarya.
That is why the yoga guru felt it necessary to tell media persons that "Lalu is not a criminal. He is a friendly man and an astute politician”.
That is probably also why BJP president Amit Shah had to rush to call on Baba Ramdev and seek his blessings for the 2019 elections.
The next stop on Shah’s mollification tour is the famous Matoshree residence in Mumbai, where Shah will go in person, tail firmly between his legs, to pacify Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray, without whose support BJP faces certain defeat in the next general and assembly elections in Maharashtra. Like many BJP presidents before him who had to go in person to meet Uddhav’s father, the arrogant Shah too will have to eat humble pie and try to appease Bal Thackeray’s son in his home. No one is convinced by the reason cited by Shah for the visit, supposedly to inform Uddhav Thackeray about the Modi government’s achievements. Watch this space to see whether Shah succeeds in the rather uphill task of regaining Uddhav’s friendship and support.
This article was published in the National Herald, a newspaper founded by the first prime minister of the Republic of India:
