Story of a Small Town’s Story

I began S.O.A.S.T. as a way to create awareness and to insight a call-to-active to my local hometowns of Ironto, Elliston, and Shawsville, Virginia. The intention was to bring to light the necessity to have a more active participation turning the local economy in these communities around. It’s bad news when all your banks have moved out and your only pharmacy has closed down. When many of the businesses are struggling to have local business partrons and when the locals have to take most or all of their business into other larger towns to meet their needs.

This should not be! Only, when I began searching for other local folks to become more active in understanding these issues as trouble, I was met with a lack of interest from the natives to insight changes. And any assistance requested from local non-profits to partner together and see what else could be done, I was met with no response. At this point, I just decided if I was going to be see change, it would be by me personally. But when you don’t have adequate finances to do this, how do you do it?

I brainstormed of ways to do this just by myself. A HUGE undertaking for anyone! But I thought, “What do these communities have within themselves that could be built off of and enhanced?” We have tons of natural resources. So, I thought perhaps looping nearby local trails, or even the Appalachian Trail through these communities to bring in tourism. And besides that, what else do we have plenty of? A wealth of historical music for generations. Perhaps an additional stop for The Crooked Road. And what else do we have? ENDLESS STORIES! All different and everyone with something interesting... if you can convince people to share them. And that’s where I come in.

I’m beginning with “MY” story, because I can’t ask anyone else to share what I am unwilling to do myself. That being said, I am mostly done with writing my memoir on child loss entitled “Three Jewels in a Mother’s Crown: Reigning Victorious Over the Grief from Child Loss,” which I hope to establish an author platform and website for soon, where I can begin selling it in eBook form until there are funds for a print version. Or perhaps sell it on a Patreon account. I’m not sure yet. But will let you know if you are interested.
