Today, the individual behind a £226 million Caribbean property fraud with thousands of UK victims has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, following an investigation by the SFO.   David Ames induced over 8000 people to invest in Harlequin Group’s promised luxury holiday properties in Caribbean islands including St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Barbados. However, in reality Ames’ scheme had no external funding, almost none of the construction was completed and 99% of investors received no returns. Many victims lost their pensions and/or their life savings, with some forced to re-mortgage properties or delay their retirement to make ends meet and pay off debts.   Meanwhile, Ames enriched himself and his family by £6.2 million, which he used to pay for extravagant holidays, including business class flights and luxury hotels. He even employed a personal chauffeur.   On delivering the sentence HH Judge Hehir said “You were clearly far more interested in pocketing investors’ money than in ensuring those investors were getting what they were paying for…You were a slick and plausible salesman and thoroughly dishonest with it... You are a menace to anybody unfortunate enough to do business with you”   He went on to praise a “thorough and diligent investigation” by the SFO.   Source: Serious Fraud Office UK Read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/evCZNwZr https://www.instagram.com/p/CjNSu0XOtf3ZQsJchGKQiMYXhPUA9hcyoIEqQE0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

BABSCON 2020 IS CANCELED DUE TO COVID-19. LET’S GET STARTED ON BABSCON 2021!
As a community organization, we have an obligation to promote safety in all our activities. Given the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it is with a heavy heart that we’re canceling our BABSCon 2020 event in accordance with State and local government requirements.
We are, however, returning for BABSCon 2021 on Easter weekend, April 2–4, 2021, at our traditional venue, the Hyatt Regency SFO. But we need your help to do that, so we’re asking all of you to take just a small leap of faith to support us.
We're automatically transferring all 2020 memberships to 2021 to make it as easy as possible for you to join us then. You won’t need to do a thing! But, if you can't make it next year, then you can make other arrangements such as transferring your registration to someone else, opting for a Spirit Badge, or requesting a refund. Please email us at [email protected] by June 1 with any refund requests.
All of our 2020 vendors, community guests, musicians, and panelists are also guaranteed their spots for BABSCon 2021 if they want to stick with us.
Additionally, all of our 2020 Guests of Honor—Nicole Oliver, Daniel Ingram, Grey DeLisle, Vincent Tong, Peter New, Josh Haber, Gail Simone, Andy Price, Jeremy Whitley, plus a couple we didn’t have the chance to announce yet!—have already committed to attend BABSCon 2021.
If you can, please consider donating to our two amazing charities who put in a lot of work to help us plan fun events for BABSCon 2020. With the loss of the donations we would have been able to make this Easter, they could really use your help!

Rainbow Community Center of Contra Costa County on: The Web • Facebook • Instagram • YouTube
Our vendors are an important part of the BABSCon experience, and we understand they are hit hard by this situation. Please support our vendors by browsing and purchasing their wares here.
We would like to thank the Hyatt Regency SFO for working with us to avoid all cancellation fees. We know that this has been a stressful time for them as they have had to deal with many cancellations, not just ours. They have been nothing but supportive to us and have been a wonderful home for our con since our conception. We are so pleased to be returning to them in 2021.
It is our hope that you, our family of fans for the last seven years, will support us in returning next year to bring you all the fun and friendship of our six previous events, and then some.
We dearly want to continue serving this fandom, and with your help, we know that we can. Please follow us on social media—Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube, and now Twitch—for further updates. We also encourage you to join our Discord server, and consider supporting us by buying great BABSCon swag on our online merch store.
If you have any general questions for us, please email [email protected]. Any registration-specific questions can be sent to [email protected].
Yours in friendship, —The BABSCon Staff
PS: We have some great ideas brewing for things we can do to make the intervening year more fun for everyone, so stay tuned!

Trial of former Barclays bosses to start

Image caption Former chief executive of Barclays John Varley
The first criminal trial of senior UK banking executives in the wake of the financial crisis is due to begin on Wednesday.
The case against four former executives has been filed by the Serious Fraud Office over Barclays’ £11.8bn rescue.
The bank avoided a UK bailout in 2008 by raising funds from Middle Eastern investors.
The executives are charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. All four have pleaded not guilty.
The defendants are John Varley, the bank’s former boss; investment banking executive Roger Jenkins; Thomas Kalaris, head of the bank’s wealth management business; and Richard Boath, former European Head of Financial Institutions Group at the lender’s investment bank.
The trial is expected to last from four to six months. The four accused were all granted bail.
SFO test
While other, more junior bankers have been tried and even jailed in unrelated cases for their parts in the financial crisis of 2007-8, this is the first time criminal proceedings against senior executives have been brought.
This case, like many before it, will be seen as a test for the office, which often brings the most complex cases of alleged white-collar crime.
Analysis: Andy Verity, BBC economics correspondent
The trial of four former Barclays executives starting in January 2019 is a unique legal landmark.
Bank chief executives have been prosecuted before, in Iceland and Ireland, but never in the United States or the United Kingdom. This is the only time in living memory that a chief executive of a global, UK-based bank has been criminally prosecuted. More importantly, it is the only time in the UK that any senior bank executive has been criminally prosecuted as a result of what happened during the 2008 financial crisis.
Why are four former Barclays executives on trial?
In December, a fraud case brought against former Tesco bosses was dismissed as the case was thought to be too weak.
In 2014, the SFO agreed to pay £6m of settlement and costs to property investor Vincent Tchenguiz after he was wrongfully arrested and his home was searched in 2011. The High Court was highly critical of the SFO’s conduct and quashed the search warrants.
The SFO has brought in money for its efforts as well. In 2017, Rolls-Royce said it would pay £671m to settle corruption cases with UK and US authorities including £497m plus costs to the SFO, which conducted its biggest ever investigation into the firm.
The firm apologised “unreservedly” for the cases spanning nearly 25 years.

David Ames, boss of Harlequin Property, faces up to 14 weeks in court.
Southwark Crown Court heard that the trial of David Ames, 65, from Wickford, Essex, is likely to last between 12 and 14 weeks from September next year.
Ames, a former double glazing salesman, is charged with three counts of fraud by abuse of position concerning a total of £390 million allegedly lost by investors in a series of planned luxury Caribbean holiday resorts.
The first charge involves alleged dishonesty from 2010 onwards, and concerns an alleged loss to investors of around £225m.
The second charge concerns alleged dishonesty from 2011 onwards, involving an alleged loss of around £130m.
Both these charges concern UK-registered company Harlequin Management Services (South East) Ltd, based at Honywood Road, Basildon, which is being liquidated.
The third charge relates to a successor offshore company, Harlequin Hotels and Resorts (Cayman) Ltd, and alleges dishonesty from mid 2012 onwards, concerning an alleged loss to investors of around £35m.
The prosecution was brought after an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), together with Essex Police, which began in March 2013.
The Harlequin Property group was endorsed by celebrities including former Wimbledon winner Pat Cash, golf legend Gary Player, TV property guru Phil Spencer, and TV football pundit Andy Townsend.

It was also backed by Liverpool Football Club.
However, there is no suggestion that any of the stars who endorsed or promoted the business have been involved in any alleged wrongdoing.
Ames denies any wrongdoing, and at the next hearing this September an application by the defence to dismiss the case will be heard.
After he was charged by the SFO in February, Ames sent a statement to investors saying: "I maintain that I am innocent of any wrongdoing and am confident in the knowledge that I have always sought and taken the advice of top accountants and solicitors for all areas of the business.”
At least 6,000 people are believed to have invested in the off-plan properties, at planned resorts in Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent, and even Mexico, many using self invested SIPP pension schemes.
Only around 100 plus properties were built at the flagship Buccament Bay resort in St Vincent.

Those who have followed Super Fan since the early days will no doubt remember the brilliant debut from Cotillon, if there was one artist to light our ticker tape Jordan Corso’s band was it. A now highly sought after clear 8” sold out in just a couple of hours with a critically acclaimed album following soon after that Spin Magazine among others heralded as one of 2015's best. Since then Jordan has upped sticks from the west coast and now resides in New York City which is where LP two came to fruition.
"The time was right for me to make a New York album. I moved in to a small apartment with my girlfriend and began getting to know the city"
After collecting demos recorded in his flat the first person he played them to was old acquaintance Shane Butler of the band Quilt who would eventually produce the record.
“When I got the demos I felt like they were a pretty good metaphor for Jordan as I knew him. One of the things I really like about Jordan is that he is caught in this interstice between high-culture & low-culture; between the cleaner aspects of life and the grittier”
Butler called his friend Al Carson who had previously helped craft St Vincent’s sound and also recorded the likes of Wild Nothing and Ariel Pink and booked time in Greenpoint’s classic Gary’s Electric Studio which Carlson calls home. From there over a summer they would realise Jordan’s demo’s in to full band recordings with the help of Jon Nellen (Ginla) on drums and with John Andrews (Woods, Quilt) adding piano.
The Afternoons will be released in five alternate sleeved cassettes exclusively designed for Super Fan while a vinyl release comes via Modern Sky Entertainment in the US. As with the debut it will also be available via Burger Records. Cotillon will be touring the US, Europe and Asia this spring/summer with dates to be announced shortly including a first ever London date.
"Jordan Corso makes intricate, textured rock music that will sweep you up, entagle you in its grip, and lay you gently back down again." NYLON
"It’s a blend of sounds old and current, mainstream and underground, all tied together with the frontman’s confidently deadpan delivery, impressively honed sense of songcraft, and effortless cool." SPIN
"An ambitious diary swells with the diversity of songs on offer but is held together by Jordan’s strong sense of voice" DIY

Jaguar (Jin/Juice)
Human vs skeleton
He got named after a boy who met him on the streets saw his patterns. Jin, being an orphan who got abandoned on the streets and helped only during only the beginning years of his orphan life, didn't have a name... Or well, never learned it at least. Maybe he had a name as a child, but he never got to hear it. Neither did Vin.

Yes
In fact I call Vin bed because he's big and well his ecto body is quite quite buff
Jin is smaller but he's actually buff as well, therefore his chest is a perfect pillow
