Great news! The iconic Bleitz Funeral Home in #Fremont was designated as a #landmark by the #Seattle Landmarks Preservation board last week! Founded in 1904 as the J.J. Bleitz Undertaking Co., it was once one of the busiest funeral homes in the NW, at its height serving 3K+ families a year. In 1921 the #Tudor-style bldg was built as a full service mortuary with 2 crematories in the basement, & functioned in that capacity until recently. A 2nd building was added next to the original in 1989. In 1995 it was bought by Service Corporation International aka "Dignity Memorial", a large #funeralhome chain. SCI bought up a ton of mom & pop-owned funeral homes in the '90s & have been closing and/or selling many off. Last year the Bleitz property was sold to real estate #development company Warm Springs Investors LLC, owned by Bill Pollard & Doug Waddell, & a subsidiary of Talon Private Capital LLC, for $4.2M. Bleitz was where #KurtCobain's services & cremation were handled. KJR Radio used to do broadcasts from Bleitz with Bleitz's Moller Pipe Organ. Despite the efforts of Jack McCullough (well-known lawyer for developers) to parse out the site & only landmark 1 building, the Board decided to landmark both, which in theory should provide more oversight & protection to the original building. The exterior of Bleitz was designated, & the developer may renovate the interiors to rent as office space, & build a new office building on the parking lot. But this is a big win, & the engagement of the community makes a huge difference! Thanks to Mike Emmick & his father Craig, who used to worked at Bleitz & put a lot of effort into advocating for its preservation (& carried on the funeral home tradition through their family business @emmickfunerals). And thanks to all the folks who shared comments, stories & memories on #VanishingSeattle's Insta & FB when we first posted about Bleitz a few months ago (some were shared with the Landmarks Board!) - & to Queen Anne Historical Society for giving comment at the meetings in support of Bleitz's preservation. Today, its demolition was announced. All cities change, but the scope and pace of the change Seattle is currently undergoing is often breathtaking. Just yesterday, KIRO reported that it was the 79th anniversary of the Showbox opening its doors. The club has undergone many incarnations as a venue (nightclub, movie theater, burlesque house, comedy club), but has managed to survive.
