♫ Wooly Bully ♫
Here’s one I bet you haven’t heard in a while, or at least since I played it a couple of years ago! The year was 1965 and this was the first and biggest hit for Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs. It became a worldwide success, selling three million copies and reaching #2 in the U.S. It reached #11 in the UK and was the first U.S. record to sell a million copies during the British Invasion,…

8. Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs debuted Apr 65 and peaked at number two, spending the most weeks, 18, of any song on the 1965 charts, and scoring 1399 points.
Sam was truly a sham, as he was born Domingo Samudio in Dallas. His group had nine chart entries 1965-67. Two made the top ten. Dominigo/Sam wrote Wooly Bully. It was the first million seller by an American group since the British invasion in early 1964.

Herewith, the original version of the classic tune, "I Couldn't Spell ! ✱ ¢ # !" The song was written by Wayne C Thompson. He recorded it in Nashville on 30 Nov 1967, released on MGM records in 1968, using his first and middle names, Wayne Carson. Audio is from the collection of DJ Dingo, of radio station 3PBS (Melbourne, Australia).
There were two cover versions; one by the Geezinslaw Brothers on Capitol 2086, retitled "I Couldn't Spell Yuuk" (pronounced "yecch"), and the most famous version by Sam The Sham (Domingo Samudio), back on MGM and retitled "I Couldn't Spell ! ! @ # !".
For comparison, te Geezinslaws' version is on HotWaxSpins' page at http://youtu.be/YIoBaUdYj5M; the Sam The Sham version is at http://youtu.be/NWrH5fYPgsU
(Note the difference in spelling between Wayne's and Sam's versions. Apparently "! ✱ ¢ # !" is pronounced mostly with the lips, as "Pffft", whereas "! ! @ # !" seems to have more tongue, as "Ptthbbt".) -
