#Saiyuki episode 4 spoilers
Month of Saiyuki (day 4)
What is your favourite episode in the Saiyuki Anime (Gensoumaden, Reload, Gunlock, Zeroin, Blast*)?
*I added Zeroin and Blast because they finally got animated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saiyuki Reload Blast, episode 8 and 9 "Barrier" and "A Chance Encounter"
I put "read more" as spoiler warning since some people might not have watched the series
Asides from animations which I love to death, I just love the fighting sequences between Genjo and Kougaiji, the overall tension in the villages hit by the youkais' attacks, hearing Sharak's mantra, the power of her sutra (I love its defensive nature and I love Sharak so much after watching the series), Dokugakuji's death (damn....I didn't expect this, I am seriously worried for Gojyo) and Nataku's arrival.
An intense emotional roller-coaster.

Saiyuki Livewatch: Episode 4 Crimson Tears
Time for today's #SaiyukiLivewatch! Today we're covering episode 4: Crimson Tears. The first episode all about our favorite half-breed, Gojyo.
Ah~ Nothing like the sound of Goku and Gojyo sniping at each other, this time over whether or not Gojyo cheated at cards. Smart money's on yes. And when Goku gets knocked into Hakkai, sending Hakuryu into a river, the dragon just abandons them to their fate. XD You adorable little shit.
Aaaand then after Gojyo realizes he isn't drowning, Sanzo then attempts to actually drown both him and Goku. Then we meet today's character Shunrei. I really like Shunrei. What we see of her today is a very sweet and loyal woman who just wants to see her boyfriend come back to her.
What I would like to know is how the hell Shunrei's boyfriend, who we'll be introduced to shortly, has clothes that fit everybody. Goku I can see if he hung onto stuff that fit when he was a teen. Gojyo, Hakkai, AND Sanzo? That doesn't make as much sense. Cause this shit fits like they were bought for them. No rolled up pants or nothing. Well, rolled up sleeves but they aren't super baggy on the shorter two like they should be if they fit the more muscular and tall Gojyo.
Yeah, Shunrei's an absolute sweetheart. It's kinda hard not to like her. We'll get into who Jien, whose name I think the dub mispronounced it, is in a sec.
I guess Gojyo's told Hakkai who Jien is or Hakkai's just sharp enough to realize why a name would cause that reaction. It could be both. Yeah Jien is Gojyo's older demonic half brother. We don't know anything about Gojyo's parents aside that Mom was human and Dad was demon. Maybe it's revealed more in detail further down the line in the manga but I never came across what type of demon Gojyo's dad even was. We WILL learn more about Jien and Gojyo's past further in the episode so I'm not gonna ruin it here.
Bonus learning points: If the Sanzo party has its way, the day probly wouldn't start before 10. I'm kinda surprised that even Hakkai agrees. Also, sleeping arrangements while I'm on that thought. We learn later on how they generally decide this but I dunno if Hakkai claimed it himself since he was driving all day or if they went to their usual way of deciding things....Which ended with Hakkai on the bed and the rest basically curled up nearby. Which I still find kinda cute.
Geez, Shunrei. THINK before you act, sweetheart. Don't run off after rumors without HELP!
Goku, you've got a good fucking nose too, dumbass. Not Hakkai's fault that he didn't bring his dragon too.
Now to clarify some wording here that's a bit unclear. That's his stepmom who tried to kill him. It's....spelled out that Gojyo's parents are both dead, whether by the stepmom's hands or someone else's. It's not made perfectly clear what happened but my guess is that after Gojyo was born, the pair died or were killed. Jien did all he could to save his brother from his mom's abuse. Including, in the manga, sleeping with her to calm her down when she got murderous. No I'm not kidding. This actually happened in the manga. (It’s also kind of a recurring thing too. You’ll see.) It's part of why Gojyo took his brother's pain so close to heart. No one else bothered to look after him except Jien. I believe we see in season 2 what set her off that final time but if we don't, I'll explain when we see a part of his childhood with his big brother.
I still think it's sweet that Hakkai is checking in on Gojyo. Although you can interpret it as more than friendship since Hakkai refers to himself as feeling left out of the group. Or just that he doesn't have any secrets either or something. I dunno. It's kinda vague. It COULD be referring to Hakkai's childhood which we won't see til season 2. A good episode of season 2 if I'm being honest.
I love how it's immediately unanimous to kick these guys' asses for fucking with Shunrei. Thankfully, not only is this not Jien but he's not been seen anywhere near here. It makes Shunrei faint in relief but, well, it's a good thing I think. It also clarifies something up for Gojyo since it relieves him a bit for her to clarify that she's looking for someone with silver hair.
XD Nice line about the carpet matching the drapes, Gojyo. The manga goes into some detail but it's kinda gross so I'll only mention it if someone asks for the info.
It's a sweet ending with Gojyo leaving Shunrei with the hope that Jien will come back once things are set right with this journey. Well, sorta sweet. We see the face of the person heading the operation to free Gyumaoh and learn exactly who Kougaiji is. He's the son of the dreaded demon and his true mother is imprisoned in a pillar. The woman he's serving, whose name I believe we learn later, is a concubine of Gyumaoh's who has a child of his. We'll meet the kid later on. I like the VA for this woman. She's a good mix of conniving and fairly cunning with the promise of something seductive, something Gyumaoh must have liked when he was with her.
We'll go further into that later. Until next time guys!

Reload Blast Ep 4 Reactionanalysis
Well, this was way easier, I was thinking about it already while trying to edit the other one :) Spoilers!
Summary: Up in Heaven, Jiroushin informs Kanzeon that Nataku is Missing! Down on earth, Hakkai narrates the history of Shangri-La’s creation from one scripture broken into five thus called the Founding Scriptures, remaining on earth in the care of the Sanzo Priests. Sanzo admits even he doesn’t know much about the scripture’s history beyond that legend, but after they finish defending themselves from another group of youkai bandits demanding the scripture, they conclude that the gods must be pretty irresponsible to leave such powerful artifacts lying around. Back in Heaven, Nataku hasn’t been found, prompting Kanzeon to reminisce about the time 500 years ago, before Nataku was comatose…it’s time for the Gaiden flashback!
500 years ago, Traveler Egan found a golden-eyed animal, neither human nor youkai, born from the earth itself. Brought to Kanzeon for judgement because of his ominous golden eyes, he’s given to the care of Konzen Douji, bored nephew of the Bodhisattva. While hiding from Konzen, he meets Nataku, instantly makes friends, and then realizes he needs a name of his own. Konzen dubs him Goku, and soon they meet  Marshal Tenpou, who explains the meaning of the name. Turns out, Nataku is the War Prince, the only being in Heaven authorized to kill, and the Jade Emperor sends him to earth subdue Gyumaoh. Shortly thereafter, Goku goes looking for Nataku but meets General Kenren instead. Kenren heard about Goku from Tenpou but is surprised by Goku’s heavy chains and wonders if they’re really necessary. When they hear Nataku is back from his mission, they go to meet him, but he was badly wounded and collapses in Goku’s arms.
Kenren reports to Tenpou that the soldiers accompanying Nataku were uninjured, as if they didn’t fight at all. He and Tenpou lament such treatment, and worry about Goku too. Nataku has a nightmare but is woken by Goku who came to cheer him up. When Konzen comes to retreive Goku later, they’re both fast asleep. Later at the Jade Emperor’s birthday celebration, Nataku listens uneasily to his father Li Touten’s ambitions, while below Goku gets picked on by some bullies in the crowd. When they insult Konzen, Goku gets physical, and Tenpou steps in to defuse the situation…only for Kenren to arrive and start an all-out brawl! Finally Konzen shows up looking for Goku and gets them mostly out of trouble and they leave, all together for the first time, but certainly not the last…
Something I love about Minekura’s storytelling is that everything has a purpose. Although she’s said she makes it up as she goes along, she manages to make everything look planned and ties it all together beautifully. For example, even the discussion of the Founding Scriptures at the beginning reminds us Sanzo didn’t get the full Scripture Bearer Training Experience™ no matter what Koumyou said about “no qualifications.” That’s about to become very relevant…as soon as the walk down memory lane is done!
I could call this Super-Condensed Gaiden since it skips several scenes, but it does form a streamlined narrative focused on Goku and Nataku, which should make sense in the greater context of the Reload Blast storyline.  I’d love to see more, but I understand time and budget constraints mean we can’t have absolutely everything. It was nice to get some extra exposition about Goku’s golden eyes and heretical nature, even if Heaven’s excuse for fearing him amounts to superstition. Nataku and Goku are adorable, Konzen, Kenren and Tenpou are handsome, Goujun was…conspicuously absent, but I assume he’ll show up next episode? He and Goku barely interacted, so I see why they left him out, but now he’s going to show up out of nowhere without context since his introduction got skipped. On the other hand, I’m sure they’re expecting most fans to have read/watched Gaiden already, and I have, and I’m loving being able to compare and contrast all the versions! Gaiden is actually one of my favorite parts of Saiyuki, even though it hurts me every time. I can’t wait for the next episode!

Because of the volume of crotch shots in episode 1 and because crotch shots only run for 3 days not 4, there will be 3 posts a day of crotches during our special weekend events. Also major spoilers for the anime will be tagged "Saiyuki reload Blast spoilers," but general posts from the new anime will be tagged "Saiyuki Reload Blast." There shouldn't be too many spoilers since this blog does run a week behind and it's crotches and butts without context, but I just wanted to mention that just in case anyone wanted to blacklist things. The next post will be at 6 am est and I'll be getting more butts from episode 2 to start by Wednesday. And so many crotches. It is truly a bountiful harvest this season.

A Seiten-Taisei Rant about the new Saiyuki Blast anime: AKA: Why I’m not as excited about the new anime as I could be
For awhile now I’ve been holding back on posting on tumblr my thoughts on the new anime. I didn’t want to tie my comments to another post, so I have decided to do it’s own post.
Let me be clear, this is why /I’m/ not excited. This post isn’t meant to make anyone else less excited. I’m not here to stomp on someone else’s happiness. You may disagree with me, or you may agree. I welcome comments on the matter.
Because there may be some spoilers, I will put it behind a cut.
Why I’m not excited for the new anime:
There’s not enough content.
I’m getting to this point right away.
As we all know Kazuya Minekura struggles with releasing chapters because of poor health. As of writing this on February 27th, 2017, the last chapter we got was in late October 2016. This is not uncommon. We often see hiatuses that range from a couple months to nearly a year.
We understand, she is ill. That’s not the problem.
My fears first began when we were told we were getting an animated adaption for Blast. At the time we were barely 3 volumes into Blast, and months later we have only gotten about 2 more chapters.
Even if the anime is only 12 episodes there’s not a whole lot of content.
Why is this a problem? Let me take you back to the early 2000s.
Saiyuki Reload had ended and now we were knee deep in Saiyuki Reload Gunlock. The anime had just completed the Against the Stream arc, yet it was still continuing. Curiously, I continued watching. Even a worm was being animated, but there were only about 4-5 chapters released at the time.
We had no idea EaW was going to span nearly 6 volumes.
Apparently neither did the anime, and we got a mess of an animated adaption that many find to be terrible. The art suffered, the boys were off character, and the story was abysmal. So much good character development and amazing reveals were missed out on...
The new anime is coming too soon
Here’s another problem the continues on from the point above. Reload Blast is only getting started. There are a lot of questions that are being raised with each chapter, and the problem is that more than likely many will be unanswered. Maybe this is good to get readers into the manga, but therein lies another problem:
As I said Minekura has health issues and it’s not uncommon to go 2-6 months without a chapter. How will new fans react to that? Will they be accepting and patient as many fans currently are? Or will they drop it once the realize the sporadic schedule?
It would have made more sense to wait close to the end of the manga to generate sales for the entire series. This probably also puts pressure on Minekura to try and release chapters as quickly as possible when she should be focusing on her health. I can’t imagine how stressful this must be for her.
If the latest arc was longer and close to finishing, I can see them adapting that and it would be fine, but the way I see it: The first episode will no doubt be the first ‘arc’, where the guys are introduced and they save a village. This chapter is about 60 pages, 1/3 of a volume. So we’ve already gone through a ton of content leaving only about 2 1/2-1/3 volumes of content left to adapt into 11-12 episodes.
Now maybe they will animate sky burial and a filler episode with body switching. Maybe not. If they do then they can stretch that out a bit. If not? Expect slow pacing or fillers. Something the Saiyuki Anime are plagued with. The other problem? An ending that cuts off suddenly or a ‘gecko ending’, meaning the animation company comes up with a non canonical ending to the arc.
Neither are ideas I’m happy with, but I’m expecting to happen.
The current arc isn’t a good introduction for new readers/watchers
The new arc is good, but not to show to new fans. Why?
A lot of action, not a lot of character development.
Once the guys reach India things start moving fast. Not a bad thing, however it doesn’t allow us time to get to know our boys. The newest arc hasn’t been the best to see our boys’ personalities and their complexities.
Even a worm would have been a fantastic arc to start with. It’s a complex plot thanks to a certain professor who is revealed to be a major instigator in problems our boys must face. Even a Worm had some major character growth, primarily in Goku and Sanzo, but had some very good interactions with Gojyo and Hakkai.
The antagonists, Hazel and Gat, had much more depth than what Gunlock provided and the main villain, Ukoku, is incredibly fearsome.
Plus let’s not forget some of the most anticipated and brutal fights, Seiten Taisei Vs Youkai Hakkai and Ukoku Vs the Sanzo ikkou.
Many people were looking forward to the fights, the reveal of Youkai Hakkai and Ukoku. Sadly it looks like we wont be getting that, even though it would fit quite well into a 26 episode season.
And on to my next point:
Even a worm will, more than likely, never be properly animated
Ever since the Seiten Taisei vs Youkai Hakkai fight I wanted to see this arc animated. Gunlock in no way does this arc justice. It’s obvious that Seiten Taisei is one of my favorite characters, but Even a Worm also shows how incredibly mature Goku has become. Many still think of him as a ‘kid’ who just likes to eat and fight, but he grows up so much in this arc and learns that the problems and solutions of the world aren’t always black and white.
Seeing the character art for Kanzeon and Kougaiji give me little hope that this arc will be animated as they don’t really appear much in Even a Worm but are prominent in Blast.
There have been folks hopeful that it could be adapted into an OVA, but that wouldn’t work as those tend to be 2-4 episodes, no where near the time needed to cover such a massive arc.
Saiyuki Gaiden was 3 episodes (+1 special) that was pulled from 2 volumes. Even a worm is about 6 volumes long. Definitely long enough for at least 13 episodes.
If only the Blast anime is adapted that gives me little hope for Even a Worm. It would be silly to animate Blast, then go back and animate the arc prior to it. Which means it probably will be skipped over.
I have dreamed of Even a Worm being animated for over 10 years, since we saw how much more complex and engaging the plot was. Yes Sanzo left the group in both adaptions, but his motives are made even more clear in the manga. Hazel’s characterization in the anime was horrid, and he was much more charming and interesting in the manga.
All I know is, if Ukoku appears in the new Anime somehow, it’s going to be strange. Nataku’s appearance alone will make little sense unless you’ve read Gaiden. There would have to be something added in to show Goku’s relationship to Nataku, how he’s an amnesiac.
What would have been nice would be a full series reboot done in this new style, from beginning to end. We have so many series and so many different art styles.
I’m perfectly happy with the new art style, though. I was worried because Minekura’s art is so detailed it’s hard to animate. This looks like a decent style.
Now let me end with this:
If you’re excited for the anime, stay excited. Don’t let my pessimistic attitude derail you from your own happiness and excitement. And I will continue to support the manga and encourage people to watch the new anime (unless it ends up being bad).
I love this series. I’m incredibly passionate about it. I have met amazing friends thanks to this series. So that’s why I decided to type this all up.
Again, feel free to tell me your thoughts. Or send me a message if you want to comment.
