March 17: Tierradentro

Sunburnt face, sunburnt neck, and sunburnt biceps. Im lying on the bed of my green hotel room in the mountain village of Inza tired, a little hurt, yet completely satisfied on a successful day that was truelly full of exploration and adventure. Assessing all that I wanted to get out of this trip from the beginning this was the day that i can say with confidence was the encapsulation of all those elements. I spent the night in Inza a small town completely surrounded by the resting giants of the legendary Andean mountain range. Ive always said I was more a mountain person than an ocean person and just being in their presence from a high vantage point is all the inspiration I need. I am never one to recieve any philosophic thoughts or enlightened interventions when amongst them. My mind completely quiets as in a stupendous awe. Nothing it could say could be paired with such a sight. Today I was entering the Tierradentro archaeological park about eleven kilometers from where I was staying. I ate a quick breakfast, packed a light lunch, yet still unprepared for what the day had in store. I have been anticipating this day since reading briefly about the ancient burial sites in my book and from there I did my own research. Burial sites or tombs located in holes in the earth, somehow the people of the area in 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. had the technology to cut through rock and make spiral staircases that lead to the tombs. Some of these stairway entrances of rock were one meter to three meteres in length. Once at the bottom you were lead to a large cavern some with pillars in the center from the floor to the roof and some without, these would be the final resting place of the deceased inhabitants as their bones would be placed in large clay pots. Other items were found in the tombs such as bead and shell necklases. Somehow nobody really knows about Tierradentro. The archeological park is large and stunning with signs in English. Yet the information never quite answered most of my questions like who were the people that built these tombs?, how was the rock cut? Why did they spend so much time and work on these underground tombs yet they themselves living most likely in mud and thatch housing? I also dont have any access to internet while in Inza so I cant even look any of this up. While I was there I only saw two couples and a girl traveller, thats it, and most of them didnt even complete the entire circuit of all sites. For an ancient site thats around 1500 years old that is insaaane if I remember the crowds at Angkor Wat. No it isnt as impressive visually but just like I said of The Lost City in Santa Marta it is much older like a thousand years older!! Thats make it much more impressive to me. From the map I have on my phone of the archeological site it looked as though I would just ride my motorbike from site to site in the park. When I got there that was deffinitley not the case, it required that one thing I forgot what its called..Oh walking. I didn't mind at the time before I realised how massive the park was. I arrived at 930am and didnt leave until 430pm. It was a full day. What made this archeological park really special was that it wasnt just a museum where you walk from site to site this was an all day, intensive trek which you just happen to see super awesome sacred burial grounds along the way. The final leg of the park was to climb all the way up a mountain for over two hours from the previous site just to reach the final sites. What I liked about the final tombs on the mountain top was all the previous tombs had blockades that you couldnt get through to see all of the tomb (Yet of course I climbed over) and it sorta felt like an exhibit. Well on the tombs on the mountain top were no blockades, no security - in fact I was the only one up there, not even any lights to see - luckily I had my phone flashlight. I was all by myself climbing up mountains, discovering 1500 year old tombs. Did I not say I was Indiana Jones or what?? Unfortunately ill never discover any gold. At the top of the mountain was a breathtaking view of the Andes in every direction. In no way was I prepared for an all day trek in some weirdly beautiful, clear, and relentlessly hot weather. I brought no sunscreen because the mornings here are so insidious with its overcast clouds and then it completely clears up two hours later. I only brought half a bottle of water but luckily there was a tienda half way through the park. Still not enough. And I did the whole thing in jeans. Oh well. The most impressive and well preserved tombs or hypogeas is the word they use had red and black paint made from the clay rock found throughout the land which they used to paint geometric patterns on the walls. Some faded away some are still very vibrant. They painted these patterns all over the domed walls of the tomb along with carved faces on some of the pillars. You look at these ancient tombs and have to wonder what were these obviously advanced people all about? I climbed down the mountain and suddenly found my parked bike sitting exactly where I left it at the park. The people of this area are descendants of this ancient people yet the people who built those tombs are just as foreign to them as they are to me. I rode out of there with a lot on my mind yet truelly just wanted to find some water and a shaded area as fast as possible as the sweat from my shirt was flying with the wind. I ended the night with eating dinner at my favorite restaurant here in Inza who has the best chicken I have ever eaten. The guy has all his roasted chickens on a rotary and when he serves you it with potatoes, rice, and a salad, its so mouth watering you know your full on your last few bites but you just want more. I just got into San Augustin now and thankfully found some internet. Still cant upload my photos though.
