Snippet meme
@allcanonisrelative and @impishtubist posted a lovely pair of snippets as an AU to Yes Sir, That's Our Baby, which is of course Hawkeye/BJ babyfic. So I thought I'd share my AU Hawkeye/Mulcahy babyfic. Except, I'm me, so she's not exactly a baby.
This is an AU where Hawkeye was an army doctor drafted in the Vietnam war and Francis was an army chaplain, so they're about twenty years younger than they are in the mainverse.
Hawkeye put the phone down. He looked around the office and the boxes he had barely started to unpack, and closed his eyes, just briefly. Then he punched in their home number.
"Who is it?" Francis said. He sounded pre-occupied and exasperated.
"I have wonderful news," Hawkeye said.
"You're coming home early," Francis said.
"No. I mean, yes," Hawkeye said. "I probably am, but I've still got to talk to at least three people here before I can leave and you'll want me to go to the mall before I get home."
"Why?" Francis said, and then, a moment before Hawkeye said, he got it, from the complicated little noise he made down the phone.
"I'm pregnant," Hawkeye said.
He let himself grin then, as Francis made those noises of surprise, worry, astonishment, panic, and - despite everything - delight.
"You can't be," Francis said. "What - who - ? Why?"
"Caseworker called," Hawkeye said. "Mrs Connolly. Fifteen, troubled, mom died, dad's not in the picture, she's getting into fights at school - "
"She? We're having a girl?"
"Yes," Hawkeye said.
"You need to go to the mall before you come home, we have nothing in the house for a girl - "
"She'll be arriving with a couple of suitcases, caseworker said. Mom died about a month ago. All their things aside from the two cases are in store in Los Angeles. We're getting her because they decided she had to be moved out of the area, into a completely different school district, and they asked around and one of the people they asked was Peg Hunnicutt - "
"Oh," Francis said.
"Yeah, and Peg said, if you want her to have a new start in a good foster home, I know these two guys - "
"Ah," Francis said. In New York City, they had fostered troubled teens over twenty years, mostly boys, though there had been some brother-sister placements. "How long for?"
Hawkeye shrugged. "Depends if dad shows up. If not, and if the placement works out, I guess til she's eighteen. Caseworker said she knew our paperwork wasn't up-to-date for California - " They had only moved here three days ago, and they hadn't been intending to start fostering again " - but she'd rush it and we'd be registered from yesterday by next Monday."
"When is she arriving?" Francis asked.
"Our stork is due - " Hawkeye checked his watch " - in three hours and twenty minutes."
"Oh, Hawkeye - " Francis sounded really exasperated. "Be home in two hours, all right? I'll get her bedroom set up, even if nothing else is ready. Get the basics from the mall, we'll go shopping with her tomorrow."
"Tomorrow is the first day of term, that's why they're rushing it."
"We'll go shopping with her tomorrow after school," Francis said. "Did the caseworker - Mrs Connolly - mention any allergies, any diet issues?"
"Nope."
"Pizza, probably," Francis said. "What's her name?"
"Buffy Summers."
"Buffy?"
"We're in California now."
"Can you - "
"I know what to get," Hawkeye said. "I'll be home in two hours. I love you."
"I love you," Francis said, but he still sounded exasperated. They hung up on each other, and Hawkeye got up to speak to the first of three people he had decided he could not skip speaking to on his first day.
He made three stops at the mall, and was home with an hour to spare. "Or more, if the traffic is bad driving from Los Angeles," Hawkeye noted, kissing Francis.
Their front room had been set up with a sofa and a couple of armchairs, facing their television: some of their books had been unpacked, and boxes stood below part-filled shelves. Their spare room - the girl's room, now - was perfectly in order: bed neatly made with clean plain sheets and pillows and a duvet: chest of drawers by the wall: a clock and a bedside light on the bedside cabinet. Francis had even hung curtains in the windows. Hawkeye handed Francis the bag of things he'd got at CVS, and let Francis deal with that: he hung one set of bath towel, hand towel, and face cloth, and put the other two sets away in the chest of drawers.
"You need to shower and change," Hawkeye said. "You smell like you've been wrestling furniture all day."
Francis glanced at his watch.
"Relax. You have at least half an hour."
"Did you get - " Francis said, sounding pre-occupied.
" - yes, and I can follow a boxed recipe."
Francis stopped, and looked at Hawkeye. "Yes, I know you can," he said, and smiled at Hawkeye. "Thank you."
"I'm so excited I could plotz," Hawkeye said, cheerfully. "But instead, I'm just going to go downstairs and bake brownies." He kissed Francis, and Francis reached up and caught the back of his head and pulled him down and kissed him, and they used up at least five minutes they could not really spare, but Francis was quick in the shower when he wanted to be, and Hawkeye had bought the simplest generic cake mix he could find. The brownies were cooling on a rack, filling the house with a comfortable, homey aroma, and Francis was downstairs, fully-dressed, and filling the coffee maker, when the doorbell rang.
The next half hour was what it always was. The caseworker, Mrs Conolly, had forms to be filled in and signed: she accepted a cup of coffee and a brownie, and so did the girl - Mrs Conolly wouldn't let her leave her sight until both Francis and Hawkeye had filled in the required forms and signed them and provided their ID - and then, she collected the paperwork, and shook hands with each of them, and told the girl she would be back to see her in a few days or you have my number, call me, and left. Hawkeye had gone to show her out: when he came back, Francis and the girl were still sitting either side of the table, each with a cup of coffee in front of them. Neither had drunk very much, and the girl had barely nibbled on the brownie.
"Look," said the girl, "I know the score."
"Is that so?" Hawkeye said.
She had a clear, distinct voice, and sounded very sure of herself. "I can take care of myself. You guys just need to show me where the school is, and I'll be out of your hair most of the day. Anyway, this is just temporary, right?"
"Well," Francis said. "We're very happy to have you here, Miss Summers, however long you stay." He smiled. I'm Francis Mulcahy - you can call me Mr Mulcahy or Francis, whichever you prefer."
"And I'm Doctor Pierce, or Hawkeye."
"Hawkeye?" The girl sounded startled. "Like the - " She made gestures which Hawkeye, who was used to this reaction, understood to be miming a bow-and-arrow. " - from the comics?"
"No," Hawkeye said. "Same spelling, different hero. I'm a doctor - I work at a clinic the other side of the mall from here."
"Can I show you round the house, Miss Summers?" Francis said.
"Buffy," the girl said. She got up. She was eyeing both of them, not exactly warily, but as if she was suddenly less sure of herself. "You guys are gay, right?"
"I'm gay, Francis is delightful," Hawkeye said, solemnly.
She gave him a puzzled look, and Hawkeye smiled at her.
"We've only just moved in ourselves, Buffy," Francis said. "Let me give you the full tour. Hawkeye, could you find those take-out menus?"

❝ We're up in flames . The both of us . ❞ ( soft angst because we are feeling it )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riku eyes narrowed, what the brunette said was correct. The two of them truly had been through so much. Even more so when all this started and most of the time it did feel like they were caught in this endless loop. His hands tightened, as turquoise hues stared out at the sunset.
“I know and it seems like the pain we both suffer hasn’t stopped at all but the one thing that gives me strength is you. It’s always been you, Sora. Maybe you think that your not as strong without those closest to you but..I’ve seen you get up countless times. Push through so much and still never once complain about it.”
Riku realized it was indeed a sensitive topic to discuss but sometimes talks like this were sorely needed. However, he would never push the other to talk about anything. In time, Sora would confined in him just what seemed to be eating away at his very 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 and soul . The truth was the older boy had a feeling what was bothering the other. It wasn’t too hard to guess considering how interwined their hearts are to once another. It was the fact that fate just seemed to keep asking so much of the brunette to the point it felt like Sora no longer could be a normal kid. Responabilities that should’ve been placed on adults yet here they were still kids being sent off to war. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳, none of it ever was and yet niether of them ever said a word. Perhaps it was because they felt such things weren’t 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝 to them.
Tumblr media
Riku let out a sigh, as the platinum haired male allowed himself to lean against the familar papou tree. A place the three of them would always linger before heading home. It was their place in such a small world. An escape from the current reality they faced.
“At this point, I don’t believe I’ve earned the right to complain about how tired I am. After all, someone needs to watch over everyone. As long as you and Kairi are happy that’s all that matters to me.”
There Riku was pushing his own feelings to the side again and acting like nothing he felt truly mattered in the greater scheme of things. It was seriously a bad habit he’d gotten into. Could anyone blame him for feeling like that though? For an entire year the keyblade master was alone. Sora faded from the world and Kairi searching her memories trying to find some clue.
During that entire solace Riku couldn’t help but blame himself. He allowed Sora to leave on his own because he 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 in the brunette. In fact he’d seen the other pull off miracles when needed and figured during that time it would be the same. Therefore, when Kairi and Sora were sitting on this very papou tree..Riku thought everything was okay. The two of them hand in hand but still there. However, slowly that happiness turned to an agonzing pain when Sora faded with the setting sun. Just like that the brunette was gone..and so went Riku heart with him.
Tumblr media
“I know I 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 you...I let you go off and rescue Kairi alone and in turn that sealed your fate. For an entire year I ached for you. There wasn’t a single moment I didn’t think about you. I blamed myself for what happened because I couldn’t stop you. I know that once you set your mind on something you won’t change the choice you made. You’ve always been quite stubborn when it comes to saving others..”
Could Riku tell the other just how much it hurt? The fact that each and every time he hurled himself into danger was another piece of the older boys heart that seemed to shatter. A part of him truly wanted to tell Sora but in the end he realized how selfish it would be.
Riku’s voice seemed to trail off as he recalled the very nightmare he had each night since Sora had vanished. How the bruntte held out a hand towards Riku’s face. The mere carass of his fingers storking the sides of the older males face.  Instead of the familar 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙩𝙝 all the older boy felt was bitter cold. The beauiful  crystal blue eyes that Riku could stare into for hours were now silver almost dull. To make matters wors on the sides of Sora’s face were what seemed to be parts of crystal embedded into his very skin. It was such a heartbreaking sight and the very thought of it caused that same ache to form inside Riku’s chest and his stomach to twist into knots.
“Don’t try and convince me that I didn’t fail you because we both now that isn’t the truth. For years, Sora..you’ve shouldered the burden of being the eternal healer..someone that always helps others even if your hurting yourself. Never once asking for anything in return.I don’t know how you do it sometimes. Shouldering so much resposnibilties isn’t something we should’ve to deal with yet we do..every single day.”
There was a moment pause, as the keyblade master felt his tone getting a bit dark. The pain they both been carrying for so many years finally washing over his entire mind and body. Hand cleching into a fist, as there came a soft thud sound. Riku hand smacking the truck of the papou tree.
‘It’s not fair...how many times do we need lose each other before it’s enough for them!! All they do is take and take until there’s nothing left and I’m tired of it!”
At this point Riku had lost his usal calm and collected composure and instead looked so angry. Eyes swirling into a mix of pain and fear. This was such a rare sight considering he never wanted anyone see him like this but Sora..had seen Riku at his worst and always stayed close so, when it came to the brunette he was allowed see so much more than others were permitted to witness.
“How many more times am I going have watch you sacrifice yourself for the sake of someone else? Most of them aren’t even greatful for the things you do and it infruates me like nothing else.”
Perhaps the older boy was letting this suppressed anger get to him but the honest truth was Riku had been holding stuff in for years. Anyone would lose it after putting up with so much pain. There it was, a tear drop that swiftly fell down the side of his face. How it caught the keyblade master off guard but he just knew his heart was crying out for Sora’s. The tears were never for himself but for the brunette he loved more than anything.
“I just want to protect the person that matters most Sora and that has always been you. Yes, I care about Kairi too but your different. The number of years I silently burned for you..hoping maybe you felt even an inch of the same feelings. It tore me up inside when there were days I didn’t feel like there was any chance...then again that’s probably my own insecurites talking. I’ve loved you since the moment I met you probably even before that..there was just this pull I felt towards you and ever since I couldn’t fight the feelings I had. Maybe it sounds selfish but there times I want you all to myself. No responsiiblities or others to bother us just a sanctuary for us.”

Nova’s Log#1: Crystal Back Gecko
Tumblr media
I’d like you guys to meet one of my favorite creatures that came out of it’s hiding place after Master Cyclonis was defeated! The crystal back geko that can be found on Terra Rex, exclusively. It was probably a good 2 months before we got a stress signal from the rec guardians about random clouds of crystal dust painting the buildings and statues. Lo and behold storks was interested and blamed it on some kind of 'Ghostly haunting' from past Rex squadrons. Piper on the other hand felt like it was a more natural cause. Such as young kids tossing modified smoker crystals covered in paint.
Once we reached the Terra we were met with a very snobby 'graceful' Rex guardian named Harrier. A tall, Buffy golden armored, and blonde pony tailed snoob~ but can't help but respect his desire to uphold tradition. It takes a lot of class and organization to keep things tight like that.
"Ah- the storm hawks. It's almost a complete pleasure to have you back on our Terra. If it wasn't for the current circumstances that is"
I feel like that was a back handed comment. He's been getting braver and sassier with every visit. Don't worry Aerrow was just as snappy.
"It's good to be back without being accused of stealing, or attack by dark ace. So it's an honor"
You could here finna and Junko going 'oooo' in the background.
"Very amusing Aerrow. But this is important. Those clouds of crystal dust are getting out of control. They're getting colored dust all over our homes and statues!"
Then it was my turn to put my two sense in. I slide up in front of Aerrow, despite his silent pleas, and leaned to one side, my arms crossed my chest.
"oh no~ not the statues. Don't you guys have like, a daily cleaning crew?"
I enjoyed the long sigh from him.
"Yes but that's not what they're for... And I thought the 'artist' would be concerned over it... After all it's also putting the opening of our art museum on the back burner..."
Nope. I feel for that fish line and sinker.
"welp that takes care of that! STORK! put on your paranormal thinking helmet and let's go figure out how to open that museum- I mean find your spooky squadron ghosts!"
"but I-"
I didn't give him a chance to fight back, even if I had to drag him by the arm (which I was) he was gonna help. We've been getting kind of closer since I bummed a ride from them. They make my job easier...
We looked high and low, and it didn't take us long to figure out what was going on. It turned out that it was just some cute little geckos that were being spooked by everyone. Stork did some digging and in one of his many, many, many, many, ancient books he discovered a lot of creatures and animals that went into hiding to avoid all the chaos and destruction of the war between skyknights and Cyclonians.
That war effected so much more than we all expected. So when it was over and the storm hawks defeated Master Cyclonis they couldn't get back without the door without her. They had to force their way back through the walls that closed off the other side to Atmosia. Since then we've had all sorts of bizzare creatures crawling through causing trouble. A lot of which have crystals attached to them, giving them similar attributes. Just like these little geckos. The same ones who seem to have imprinted themselves to stork... Needless to say the screech that followed.
"Why! ARE THEY SO ATTACHED TO ME! Geckos are cold blooded! They should be attaching themselves to Nova! Not me!"
I had struggled, and failed, to surpass my giggle.
"what's so funny?"
I back away from him. He didn't seem to pleased and you could just hear the growl in his voice.
"I'm not laughing at you, it's just. I uh- agree with you! But you can't tell me it's ironic. A funny ironic."
He snarled at me and we made our way back to the Condor where the others were waiting.
Once we climbed back onto the ship all eyes were on stork. Finn and Junko were snickering uncontrollably, Piper seemed concerned for storks well being, and Aerrow was wearing that 'I have something snarky to say' face. You know the one.
"Hey there stork, What cha' got there?"
"Don't even start Aerrow. One moment I'm investigating a statue, trying oh so carefully to not get crystal dust all over me and then I hear Nova giggling like a mad man. But other than that we figured out these geckos were behind everything."
I shrugged when our team leader looked my way.
"Hey- it's not my fault Stork's a dad to a bunch of geckos."
Aerrow then rolled his eyes and went to place a hand on Stork's shoulder, but just as he touched him you could hear several hisses and a small puffing sound. It was almost a pure silence as the sparkly cloud faded away revealing both Aerrow and stork covered in bright blues and purples. Aerrow seemingly less pleased about it.
"Get them off the ship..."
"ok."
I followed Stork off the condor and we spent the next 15 minutes trying to get them to go away. With no avail.
Each time we got one off, another would attach itself, and then another and we just kept going in circles.
Then it clicked.
"We need to find the mom..."
Stork kind of froze and turned slowly towards me.
"I'm sorry... But what!"
I don't think I've seen him this-
"Nova- how looong have we been at this..."
The way the word 'long' vibrated sent a shudder down my spine. And not a good one.
"All daaay~"
"yes! All day! And you only JUST now had that thought!"
"Don't blame me! You're the professional monster Hunter!"
"I know! I'm just frustrated that I didn't think of it first!"
"then stop yelling!"
"I can't this is just my default now!"
With that out of the way we decided a plan to find the nest. Which was proving to be more difficult than planned. We had to have turned every rock, and wooden board to find the nest. I watched Stork's shoulders slouch over. He was slowly giving up...
"Well. I guess this is a good enough time as ever to say this but- we're doomed..."
I reached my hand onto his shoulder, and watched as two of the Geckos climbed into me.
"We're not doomed Stork. We're just hitting a lull..."
"Yeah- in a storm..."
"which we will get through."

Tsumkwe to Rundu, Namibia on the Okavango river and Angolan border. 4/24/19. About 400km
We took our time this morning. Made to order breakfast of eggs, sausage and bacon along with toast, juice, cereal and yogurt. We gathered around for a while and didn't roll out until near 9:30. We rode for a while and stopped at a bushman village. We are a real oddity in this way out of the way area. The kids come running to the road to wave everywhere today the entire day. The group of bush people that gathered around us when we stopped were very friendly and happy. They showed us how they shoot arrows with the very small bushman bow and small arrows. The bushmen are known to be awesome trackers and hunters. All these kids were learning the bow. Also they use a deadly poison that supposedly once the skin is pierced with it the animal will surely die. The clicking noises along with their language are really interesting. Then, after the obligatory poses with our bikes and wanting their pictures taken, Gavin brought out the Mavic Air drone. This was now getting the whole village out to watch. Gavin flew it down the highway to another group coming towards us, bringing lots of clicking and excitement. We waved good bye and went on down the road. The crushed limestone base is hardened into what seems like pavement but still mostly covered with sand and gravel. The main tracks in each direction are however nearly 50% exposed. Some ruts and rocks but largely a smooth ride today even though much of it at least time wise was on a D highway we averaged 100-120km/hr. We had our first flat tires today. While waiting with our new bushman friends, the "bucky" (what Aussies and S. African folks call a pickup truck) had a rear tire get slit. They had a spare so that is what gave us so much time with the locals. Later this afternoon on a long stretch to Rundu, Andy ran out of gas about 25k shy of town and his mate Jim fetched him a can of gas. Also Gavin had a front flat and spent some time on the side getting the wheel off before the truck arrived. Eventually the rest of us all made it to the gas station and then about 20k out to the Okavango river and the very nice Hakusembe River Lodge. Beautiful day of riding and the last 5k or so on the lodge's driveway likely provided the most off road challenge of the day! Beautifully landscaped with wide wooden decks and a swimming pool which has just doubled as an interim laundry since I went for a dip long before the support truck got here with my clothes. Still no Wi-Fi which seems to even piss off the SA crew. I didn't know what to expect but after two days here's hoping tomorrow's destination has it so I can let somebody know we're OK. Today we skipped lunch, there really was no place or town at all moving up towards the Caprivi. Very desolate and beautiful. We also found that we had been in elephant and lion territory but that we hadn't seen any. One of the guards at the multiple animal/vegetable checkpoints told us about that. We had a couple stops today where they'd check out licenses and sign a log form but no real hassles. One interesting section of the D highway before we got on the tar for the last 142k to Rundu was our passing through a series of farms. Not that farms would be unusual but here the gates to keep their cattle in ran across the road. I lost count after a dozen. I would guess north of 16 or 18 gates that required us to dismount and open then close after we passed. Also a number of cattle grates to ride over and one farmer who tended his gate and waved us through. The D roads have even more mounds growing up along the tire tracks. We suspect these are termite mounds in an early stage that should be graded away whenever the Namibian folks get around to grading. Interesting country. Still heading mostly north after 5 days and still in Namibia. HUGE! 🇳🇦 and under populated. My SA mates say that there are only two million folks in this huge country. Namibia is about 1/12 the size of the US (bigger than Texas plus other states) but with only 2.5M people!
They say there are crocs in the river here so I'm gonna stick to the pool. This is a pretty 'lux resort so we should have a good dinner. Gonna go join the group on the deck over the river for a cool refreshment. 🍺 Now I am on board the "sunset" cruise full of European folks (German, Swiss and Dutch) some with huge telephoto lenses. We stopped over on the Angola side of the river and saw a border post just up the hill. 🇦🇴 Lots of cool birds. Night heron, cormorants, open billed storks, egrets, some crocodiles and also monitor lizards. It turned into a booze cruise with choices of alcoholic beverages and a nice snack assortment including cheeses and Kudu biltong (jerky). I should also mention that due to the truck's late arrival and the impromptu swim in my riding shirt and skivvies, I was likely the most underdressed on the boat ride. What the heck, I was still sporting more fabric than most of the Euro folks in their banana hammocks! Dinner was a buffet but first class. A salad bar with must've been thirty + choices, butternut soup, springbok steak, oryx stew, lots of side dishes and a dessert bar. They also served everyone Pimm's with some fruit. A great evening on the deck right on the Okavango, looking across the river to Angola. The wait staff has banded together a number of time for example to welcome me back from the sunset cruise. The last singing group came by the tables after dinner and one of them was inquiring if anyone would like some grappa or after dinner liqueurs. One other thing I think I'll mention before bed is that once we got onto the Rundu highway, there was a steady stream of villages and even items for sale every few kilometers alongside the road. People walking, school kids, families, workers even passing some sort of community gathering of maybe 200 people circled around under a tree for who knows what. In general today was almost like a parade route as we spent the first half of the day in bushman country feeling like oddities as we passed by garnering attention from nearly everyone and waving with gusto. The last stretch I referred to above was a much more heavily traveled paved highway so we were no longer one of the only attractions riding by, however most folks especially children offered a wave and I waved a LOT especially those last couple hours on the B8 into Rundu. 👋 Tomorrow we enter the Caprivi, a beautiful strip of land that Namibia owns heading eastward. If you haven't seen the NatGeo documentary film Into the Okavango, please check it out. It is about the river delta just down from here and it is amazing. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/films/okavango/
