Richonne in Retrospect

#33: The Observations (5x12)

So I’m all about observations, if these detailed reflections on every Richonne scene didn’t give it away lol. 😋 And what I like about “Remember” is that it’s also all about observations, especially in regards to Rick and Michonne. 🙌🏾

In this episode, TF meets Deanna and the Alexandrians and Deanna does these video interviews with each of them.

In Rick’s interview he tells her how he’s killed people and he knows why they’re dead. He says, “They’re dead so my family, all those people out there, can be alive. And so I can be alive for them”

First of all; Real to the One. Secondly; I love how no matter what situation or state of mind Rick is in, one thing never changes and that’s that his family comes first and there’s not anything he wouldn’t do for them.

Third of all (😂); I just like knowing how Rick really considered Michonne family back then, and she’s only become more and more of his family as time goes on. 👌��

Deanna tells him, “Sounds like I’d want to be part of your family” and I was like…

Cuz Rick and TF are ride or die so that’s def a family you want to be apart of. 👏🏽And since Deanna was one of the characters who low key tried to help Rick and Michonne realize they were right for each other, she’s apart of the fam in my book.😋

Deanna also has a line where she tells Rick, “Your son, your daughter, should have a place to grow up.” And that’s just such a sad line now in retrospect, for reasons you already know. 😥

In this discussion between Rick and Deanna, she also mentions that she’s not kidding when she says she’s exceptionally good at reading people. And considering I feel like she picked up on the power of Richonne with a quickness I was like...

She really does have a gift. 💯😋

Now, as you know, season 5 brought a lot of great moments for Rick and Michonne.

…It also brought a storyline that I wasn’t feeling from the moment it aired and I still dislike it to this day. 😒

If I had to sum up my thoughts on this whole Jessie arc, I’d just say I thought it was...

And y’all, don’t worry, I’m not going to talk about it too much or go in on her, cuz we don’t need to relive it or welcome that negativity in our lives lol. These are positive posts. (there may be one post with a gif journey documenting how tried I felt tho 😋)

Plus I gotta admit, in re-watching these episodes, anytime that storyline was on screen this was actual footage of me skipping through it like…

But, in analyzing all things Richonne, there are a few moments in this storyline that were noted cuz there are things that help to make it clear that Rick was pursuing this woman strictly out of PTSD and because he was trying to right the wrongs with Lori since they never got closure.

That aspect definitely could have been made clearer (or his pursuit of her could have just not been in it at all, I’m just saying 🤷🏽‍♀️) but I’m now at a point where I’m unbothered with it cuz at the end of the day Rick’s with the right one now, the way it should be. 👌🏽💯

It’s funny cuz back then, when this first aired I wasn’t even aware that I wanted Rick and Michonne to be a couple, but I still was not feeling this character and this storyline at all.

Like when she introduces herself to him and cuts his hair, the whole time I was just like...

But the interesting thing I noticed (in the few scenes with her that I did manage to not fast forward) is that Lori seems to come up in one way shape or form almost every time the storyline deals with Jessie.

And I feel like that’s because her purpose really is to make Rick think about losing his wife and the lack of reconciliation that still affects him and...

But moving on to what I’m most looking forward to breaking down, which is this next scene. I consider it the best scene of the episode and one of R&M’s best moments period. 🙌🏾😊

This is another scene that makes the Richonne top ten to me, cuz y’all I adore this moment where Michonne sees Rick’s clean shaven face for the first time. ☺️ Like this is legit me when I see this scene...

There’s so much good and telling stuff in just this one interaction. 👏🏽👏🏽

It starts with TF all in that one room, cuz they’re sleeping in the same living room until they know they can trust this community.

Rick puts Judith in the crib and then Michonne walks in smiling and asks, “How long was I in there for?”

And then Rick says, “20 minutes.” And I love this. Of course he’s the one to answer, and of course he has an exact answer lol.

It’s sweet cuz she walks out and asks essentially anyone the question, and she says it more in a way to just imply she was in there awhile, but then Homeboy comes through with an exact answer. 👏🏽 Like it’s not even “about 20 minutes” . He says “20 minutes” straight up lol. 😋

I love that he answers and I feel like he noticed how long she was in there cuz one; she’s always on his radar but also cuz they’re usually always together in situations like this.

Like think about how R&M sat together when they were in Father Gabriel’s church for that dinner, so probably, with everyone sitting around in this living room, Rick notices her not being there cuz that’s who he’d be with right now. That’s just my little #extra observation. 😂

And also she has yet to see his face so you know he’s been counting down for her to see it. 💯

Michonne says she couldn’t stop brushing and then she looks up at Rick and makes an observation of her own. 😊

I adore her reaction to him and how you hear her say a sort of surprised “Huh” when she immediately takes notice of Rick’s new clean shaven face. It just feels like she couldn’t even help but to verbally react to the fact that she likes what she sees. And that “huh” was a “huh, so my best friend is fine” reaction lol. 😋

And then the way Rick stands in front of her with that little bashful smile. ☺️ Y’all it’s adorable.

Like he literally just stands in front of her cuz he’s like alright let’s see what she thinks. I was like look at Rick getting in the right lighting and angles for his woman. 😋

It’s honestly impressive that it took them as long as it did to become an official couple cuz they have so many moments like this where it’s so clear they’ve caught feelings.

And while they have that deep connection and mature love, this moment shows that they also have that flirty kind of love as well. Here for it.

It’s so precious the way he went to stand in front of her cuz, before he was somewhere putting Judith in a crib and then he makes his way over to her direction cuz he def wants her to see his new look.

And knowing that this moment was included as one of Rick’s memories of Michonne in the season 7 premiere, it confirms that this moment totally mattered to him.

Also, if Rick remembered the rainbow cat, he def would remember when she gave him a razor in season 4, so I feel like this scene is sort of a callback to that cuz he knows she had recommended shaving before and now here he is.

I love that he’s like bashful about this but also sort of smiling and waiting to see what she thinks and Homegirl very clearly has some thoughts. 😁

Cuz the look and the smile that Michonne gives this man...

I mean it doesn’t get much clearer that she’s feeling him, honey. 👀

And then she tilts her head and says, “I’ve never…I’ve never seen your face like that.” Smitten kitten, y’all. 😊

Homegirl’s noticed Rick a couple times before, but I love that now they’re comfortable enough for her to blatantly be all smiley and flirty about it. ☺️

And I love that, yet again, they’re having a Richonne moment in front of all these people. They can’t help it. 😋

It’s just all so cute and I’m very glad the actors got to play this the flirty way cuz that’s the only way. Homeboy notices she’s been gone for 20 minutes, Homegirl takes note of his new appearance, that’s all bound to come off a little flirty so Danai got it all the way right in knowing it should be played this way. And it really elevates this scene and makes it so memorable and special.

Rick sort of reels it back when he walks and says, “That’s how I felt before and after.” And it feels like he’s trying to downplay it, but you know Slick Rick’s happy that she seems to approve.

I just love watching this scene back and knowing with certainty that they felt some type of way about each other. Like forget the other chick, this was really where their heart was. 👏🏽💯

And I feel like for this episode to take time to highlight this moment between them, it clearly was important because of the future relationship they’ll have.

And then Michonne just has to gently put her hand on his arm for him to stop in his tracks and she tells him, “Look, I get why we’re playing it safe. We should.”

I appreciate that even with both of them feeling different about this place, they still understand each other. Like even when it doesn’t look like it, they’re still on the same page. 👌🏽

She adds, “I just, I have a good feeling about this place.” And I notice Sis has no problems looking right at this new Rick. 😋

Rick says, “Well, I hope you’re right” and, again, that lets us know that the big reason they’re even at ASZ is cuz he hopes she’s right and wanted to give her the chance to be right about this place.

And Michonne says, “Yeah, me too.” cuz I think she too knows Rick took this risk for her and she doesn’t take that lightly.

And then Deanna comes knocking and when she sees Rick’s face she’s like “Wow” lol.

It’s funny the difference between Rick’s reaction to Deanna noticing his change in appearance and Michonne noticing. Like with Michonne he can’t help but show he cares, but with Deanna he literally groans like “Alright let’s not talk about it.” 😂

Rick mentions how he hasn’t been given a job and Deanna says she does actually have a job for him and Michonne but she just hasn’t told them yet.

I love that, in talking to both of them, Deanna observed that Rick and Michonne were made of the same stuff and would be great in authoritative roles together. 👏🏽

And before she leaves she tells Rick, “You look good.” Deanna reminds me of like when older women see a nice young man and a nice young woman and want to help match them up. I’m not mad at it lol. 😋

That’s probably why Deanna became a Richonne supporter cuz she was like “Look y’all just make sense so imma pair you up til you realize yourself that you’re meant to be paired up.” Thanks, Deanna girl. 👌🏽

(Side note: I love the shot at night of Rick putting a blanket over Carl and Noah. Like this man is such a parent and it’s precious. 😭)

In Michonne’s video interview she says “If this is how you’re saying it is, then this is what we wanted. We’re ready for this.”

Deanna asks, “All of you?” And then Michonne pauses to think for a bit and you know she’s thinking about Rick, cuz she knows her man is gonna need some time to fully embrace this place.

She responds saying, “All of us” tho, cuz she also knows Rick will come around. And plus, if she’s ready then he’s basically ready. 😋

Watching Rick and Michonne’s interaction in that “20 minutes” scene, I can’t not smile knowing what they’ll become and seeing this cute little nervous energy from Rick and flirty energy from Michonne. ☺️

And again, i just love that there’s all these little moments in their journey of falling in love, cuz it’s special to know that they went from this...

To a moment like this...

And it’s cool cuz it literally feels so natural for them to be as in love as they are in this current state of the show, cuz they’ve been in love longer than they had realized. And it’s scenes like this one in season 5 that make that loud and clear. Here for it. 👌🏽😊
