Matana Roberts — Coin Coin, Chapter Five: In the Garden (Constellation)
Tumblr media
This is the fifth album of a projected 12 in Matana Roberts’s Coin Coin series, named after a slave, later activist, Marie Thérèse Coincoin. As with previous volumes, Coincoin’s biography intermingles with folk tales, slave stories and songs, and discussions of the rich, often tragic, history of African Americans. Another element of the Coin Coin series is the relationship between past and present. In this case, the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the present mirrors the story of an illegal and fatal abortion conducted on one of Roberts’s ancestors. In the notes, she says,"I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation.” Rather than being shamed, as so many women currently are in the wake of the SCOTUS decision, in the lyrics Robert’s relative is described as, “electric, alive, spirited, fire, and free.”
Roberts is a versatile artist, a saxophonist and composer who not only works in musical contexts but in theater, fine arts, and poetry. The spoken word portions of Coin, Coin Chapter Five are performed by Roberts and poet Gitnajali Jain. The balance of spoken word and music is well-conceived. The music itself is performed by a host of prominent musicians and produced by Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio). Roberts covers a number of instruments in addition to saxophone, Darius Jones plays alto saxophone, Matt Lavelle, clarinet and trumpet, Mazz Swift, violin, Stuart Bogie, clarinet and bass clarinet, and Mike Pride and Ryan Sawyer play drums and percussion. Pretty much all the performers play tin whistles and sing.
Free jazz is an important component of Robert’s music-making, and it is here in abundance on “Different Rings,” “Shake My Bones,”  and “Predestined Confessions.” The arrangements of these complex pieces are well wrought throughout. “A Caged Dance,” trades a gorgeous post-bop solo with dissonant interjections, providing a polystylistic framework. This is not unique to “A Caged Dance.” A number of pieces combine different idioms. Malone’s synthesizer and Pride and Sawyer’s rockist drumming move the piece outside the jazz tradition. The chorused vocals that sing rounds and the children’s folk song, “All the Pretty Horses,” create some of the most memorable music on the album.
The closing track, “Ain’t I … Your mystery is our history,” with its plethora of tin whistles and jangly percussion, recalls both avant-classical and African music. It is significant that Roberts returns to a bespoke instrumentation and non-Western sound world to send the piece home. Less than halfway through, the Coin Coin series is engaging and ever new. Seven more installments: one is eager to hear what is next.

Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the garden… is the latest instalment in composer, improviser, saxophonist, bandleader and visual artist Matana Roberts’ visionary project exploring African-American history through ancestry, archive and place. Weaving together elements of jazz, avant-garde composition, folk and spoken word, Roberts tells the story of a woman in their ancestral line, who died following complications from an illegal abortion. At a time when reproductive rights are under attack, her story takes on new resonance. “I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation,” Roberts explains. By unpacking family stories and conducting extensive research in US public archives, Roberts has created a rounded portrait of a woman who is, as their lyrics put it, “electric, alive, spirited, fire and free.” Each part of Coin Coin explores radically different musical settings, from the free jazz and post-rock eruptions of Chapter One to the solo noise collage of Chapter Three. Featuring a new ensemble steeped in jazz, improvisation, new music and avant-rock, helping to expand the project’s existing sonic palette, Chapter Five is no exception. Roberts is joined by fellow alto saxophonist Darius Jones, violinist Mazz Swift (Silkroad Ensemble, D’Angelo), bass clarinettist Stuart Bogie (TV On The Radio, Antibalas), alto clarinettist Matt Lavelle (Eye Contact, Sumari), pianist Cory Smythe (Ingrid Laubrock, Anthony Braxton), vocalist/actor Gitanjali Jain and percussionists Ryan Sawyer (Thurston Moore, Nate Wooley) and Mike Pride (Pulverize The Sound, MDC). The late, great trumpeter jaimie branch, who was due to play on the album, receives a credit for “courage”. The album is produced by TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, who also contributes synths. As a composer, Roberts draws upon strategies associated with the post-war avant-garde, including John Cage and Fluxus member Benjamin Patterson’s conceptual approaches to scoring and performance. The immersive work of Maryanne Amacher, in which “sound and the body almost collaborate” is another key influence. “That is the foundation for me of the Coin Coin work,” they explain. “It’s not just the alto saxophone as an instrument placed in the jazz canon, it's the alto saxophone as an instrument that can be utilised to affect the body.” Listeners will be struck by Roberts’ ability to mould diverse sounds into a cohesive whole. The spoken word passages are accompanied by driving modal jazz on “how prophetic”, minimalist synth loops on “enthralled not by her curious blend” and cantering folk forms on “(a)way is not an option”. These are interspersed with instrumental pieces that range from avant-garde abstraction and squalling free jazz, to solo saxophone reflections and Mississippi fife and drums blues. There’s a further evocation of American roots music in the powerful group vocal arrangement of “but I never heard a sound so long”, adapted by Roberts from the plantation lullaby “All The Pretty Horses.” While this new chapter of Coin Coin focusses on a female-identified protagonist, others haven’t (Chapter Three being from the perspective of a male ancestor) and Roberts intends for future chapters to continue to cover the breadth of the gender spectrum, as well as their Native American heritage. “I'm proud that people say that the Coin Coin work speaks of a woman's story. But I want to make sure that it retains its inclusivity, because what we look like is not always what you see.” This reflects Roberts’ own experiences as a queer person of colour. For the remaining chapters of Coin Coin, Roberts will continue exploring identity and ancestry. “Expect it to keep heading towards a liberation of the human spirit.”

Police confirmed University of Virginia student shooting suspect Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. is in custody.
UVA President Jim Ryan identified the three deceased at an 11 a.m. press conference Monday.
They are UVA linebacker D'Sean Perry and UVA wide receivers Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler.
A source tells Fox News Digital that the other two hospitalized are also UVA football players.
Classes were canceled Monday. As of 10:33 a.m., the shelter in place order had been lifted for campus "based upon a thorough search on and around the grounds," UVA police said, but, "a large police presence will remain."
Fox News confirmed that FBI arrived at the scene on Monday morning. The search is spearheaded by local law enforcement and already involves multiple other agencies including a Virginia State Police helicopter.
In a message to the community earlier Monday, UVA President Jim Ryan wrote to provide an update on the multiple public safety alerts sent out following the 10:30 p.m. Sunday shooting that killed three and injured two others.
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA MANHUNT: WHO IS EX-FOOTBALL PLAYER SHOOTING SUSPECT CHRISTOPHER DARNELL JONES, JR?
The identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed by UVA or police officials.
Ryan, in confirming that Jones Jr. is a UVA student, said the suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Jones, a former UVA football player, is described by police as a Black male last seen wearing a burgundy jacket or hoodie, blue jeans and red shoes. He might be driving a Black SUV with the Virginia tag TWX3580.
"Multiple law enforcement agencies are coordinating to find and apprehend him," Ryan said. "As of writing, I am heartbroken to report the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care. We are working with the families of the victims, and we will share additional details as soon as we are able."
"This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia," Ryan added. "I am holding the victims, their families, and all members of the University of Virginia community in my heart today, and we will make plans to come together as a community to grieve as soon as the suspect is apprehended."
The shooting was initially reported around 10:30 p.m. Sunday when shots were fired in the Culbreth parking garage.
Shortly after, a campus-wide alert was issued announcing the suspect was at large and telling all people at UVA to shelter in place. University police said they are looking for Jones in connection with the shooting.
Jones is reportedly a former UVA football player.
Anyone who sees Jones is asked to call 911 immediately and not approach him.
A UVA alert issued before 7:30 a.m. Monday said the law enforcement search on and around school grounds continues. "Remain sheltered in place," the alert read. "Expect increased law enforcement presence."
Vice President and Dean of Students Robyn S. Hadley said Monday that she was on grounds "like many of you."
"I am sheltering in place and in direct touch with University leadership and UPD," the message said. "Please, please take the shelter in place commands seriously as the situation remains active. The suspect is armed and dangerous. If you are not inside and safe, immediately seek safety."
As of 1 a.m., UVA police said to continue sheltering in place and to contact friends and family to let them know "your status."
Early Monday morning, UVA police said three people were killed, and two others were injured in the shooting. Further details were not immediately available.

Suspect Accused Of Killing 3 University Of Virginia Football Players
By Yvonne Kalpakis, Loyola University New Orleans Class of 2023
November 21, 2022
Tumblr media
A former University of Virginia football player is in jail on suspicion of shooting and murdering three football players and injuring two additional students on campus late Sunday night[1]. After a manhunt in Charlottesville, Virginia, the suspect was taken into custody[1].
Jim Ryan, the president of the University of Virginia, revealed the names of the three football players who were shot and killed: junior defensive end/linebacker D’Sean Perry of Miami, junior receiver Lavel Davis Jr. of Dorchester, South Carolina, and junior receiver Devin Chandler of Huntersville, North Carolina[1].
Just before 11 a.m. in Henrico County, Virginia, the shooting suspect, named as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was reportedly caught[1]. Jones, 22, was detained and booked with three charges of second-degree murder and three counts of using a weapon in the conduct of a felony, according to University of Virginia Police Chief Tim Longo[1].
Online records show that Jones is still detained at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail[2]. According to James Hingeley, the Commonwealth's Attorney for Albemarle County, Jones was assigned a public defender until his upcoming hearing in December, which will be a status hearing where it will be discussed whether Jones has hired a private attorney[2].
According to a university official, Jones traveled to Washington, DC, on Sunday with other UVA students to see a play[2].
Two more students, one of whom was in severe condition, were shot, according to Ryan, and were taken to the hospital[1]. Junior running back Mike Hollins is one among the injured pupils, according to his father, who spoke to The Washington Post[1]. After being shot in the back, Michael Hollins Sr. informed The Post that his son is in “stable” condition[1].
The shooting happened after the students got back to campus following a field trip on a charter bus[1]. Tony Elliott, the football coach at Virginia, said in a statement that his squad is going through “devastation and anguish[1].”
According to Ryan, the students took a field trip to Washington, D.C., on Sunday to see a play[1]. After sharing a dinner together, “someone among them opted to execute an act of violence,” according to Longo[1]. Longo was informed that Jones had been captured by another law enforcement official 13 minutes into the 20-minute news conference on Monday[1]. Longo took a moment to breathe after reporting the arrest[1].
Chris Jones Sr., Jones’ father, told Richmond TV station WTVR that he was shocked after receiving a call from the police on Monday[1]. “My sympathy is with their families.” He responded, “I don’t know what to say other than on his behalf, I’m sorry and I apologize[1].”
According to the proprietor of Dance's Sporting Goods in Colonial Heights, Jones bought two firearms this year, a semiautomatic rifle and a pistol, in separate transactions[2]. Jones also tried twice to purchase a pistol there, but he was denied in 2018 because he was under the age (21) required to purchase a weapon[2]. Three years later, according to Dance, he attempted to purchase a gun but failed a background check[2]. Virginia State Police Spokesperson Corinne Geller wrote in an email to CNN that an inquiry into the attempted purchase on July 8, 2021 discovered that Jones' request was denied by the state police gun transaction center because of an outstanding legal situation[2].
The court removed the ban on further transactions in October 2021 after reducing the active case to a misdemeanor, according to Geller[2]. University of Virginia Police was contacted by CNN for comment regarding the shooting inquiry and the weapon used, but no response was received[2].
Longo said during the press conference that Jones’ remarks about having a gun on campus were brought to the attention of the university’s multidisciplinary threat assessment team in September[1]. The individual, who was not connected to the university, according to Longo, had never seen the pistol[1].
Longo claimed that there were no threats made in conjunction with the remark regarding Mr. Jones carrying a pistol[1]. He also said that Jones’ remarks concerning the gun were reported to the office of student affairs, which then attempted to talk with Jones[1].
According to Longo, Jones’ roommate told the university that he had not seen a firearm[1].
Later, the university discovered that Jones had faced misdemeanor concealed handgun charges in February 2021 outside of Charlottesville[1]. He was supposed to inform the university of the criminal accusations, but he didn't[1]. Longo stated that Jones was the subject of administrative charges brought by the university through the judiciary council, and that the case was still pending[1].

Tragedy Strikes Again
Tumblr media
On Sunday November 13, 2022, once again tragedy struck a school campus. At The University of Virginia, a shooting occurred just minutes after a charter bus returned to the campus from a field trip to Washington D.C. The Suspect of the shooting who left three classmates dead that day was a part of that class field trip. The suspect was identified as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.,  age 22. UVA stated that Jones was a non-playing member of UVA’s football team in 2018.
According to school officials, he was not currently a member of the team and hadn’t been for “over a year.”
Police stated that all three people killed in the attack were football players, but the motive for his heinous act is still undetermined.
Among the three identified victims are Juniors, D’Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr. and Devin Chandler. Also, third-year player running back, Mike Hollins, was one of two people wounded in the attack.
Second-year student on the trip, Ryan Lynch, told Philadelphia TV station Jones pulled out a gun as they arrived back and pushed one of the now-deceased football players, saying, “You guys are always messing with me.”
Lynch also stated the gunshots “just kept coming, more and more gunshots – just wouldn’t stop,” he said, the gunman then “just sort of walked or skipped off the bus.”
The campus went on a 12-hour lockdown during the search for Jones, who was later found an hour away from UVA in Richmond VA.
He faces three charges of second-degree murder and three charges of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
-
For the past 6 weeks I have written a current event every week, each week the headlines are full of new shooting stories.
I just saw in the headlines near my hometown that a gun store has been robbed twice in the last two weeks. It was also stated that it was the fourth gun shop to be robbed in an 80-mile radius.
Is there an obsession with guns? Is there a huge influx of depression and loneliness? Is this caused by gang violence?
Whatever the case there needs to be an end to this.
I have found through different studies that the most impressionable time in a person's life is roughly around age 12. My dream and desire is for people to genuinely and wholeheartedly LOVE the youth. Proverbs says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It should be our duty to believe in, pour in, train up, love on, teach and encourage the next generation. If we love them then and teach them then, while they are most impressionable, I genuinely wonder what our futures could look like.
