A 'COOLEY HIGH' REUNION
AT THE 2022 TCM CLASSIC FILM FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, CA
Steven Williams (73), Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (68), director Michael Schultz (83; middle back row), Cynthia Davis (63), Glynn Turman (75), and Garrett Morris (85) attend the screening of "Cooley High".
One of the most influential African American films of the 1970s, this coming-of-age tale was inspired by writer Eric Monte’s experience growing up in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project, where he attended the real Cooley Vocational High School. Indie studio American International Pictures developed his story and had the wisdom to hire a Black director, Michael Schultz, to shoot the low-budget film on location. Glynn Turman stars as Preach, who dreams of writing plays while palling around with basketball champ Cochise (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs). Their episodic adventures and a soundtrack filled with Motown classics helped turn the picture into one of the year’s biggest hits.
It had a major influence on writer-director-actor Robert Townsend—who had a one-line bit—and John Singleton, among other Black filmmakers who saw its use of three-dimensional characters and focus on friendship as a breakthrough. It also inspired the hit TV series What’s Happening!!

you know what. it's missing norton!bruce hours (again) and i got some headcanons to share this time. below the cut because we might be here a while.
general / misc headcanons:
based on norton's screenplay for the incredible hulk, this bruce's full name is david bruce banner. (this is also how i mentally differentiate between norton and ruffalo's portrayals; to me, norton!bruce is david, ruffalo!bruce is robert.)
his mother used to call him "davey" as an affectionate nickname when he was little.
frankenstein is one of his favorite books because his mother read it to him. (this one is canon to the ih novelization)
he adores dogs and adopts a puppy between the avengers and age of ultron. (i don't have a name for the puppy yet.)
he likes studio ghibli films and finds the animation style relaxing.
learned russian while getting one of his phds, like in the comics.
inspired by this panel from the "super spy banner" arc in the comics: he likes james bond. and yes, he absolutely takes the chance to say "the name is banner. bruce banner" when he's doing an infiltration mission (probably with natasha and/or clint) or something. he and natasha probably watch the films together since her solo film had her quoting along to moonraker.
bruce. is. a. martial. artist. the films forget this and i'm salty about it.
cooking is relaxing for him so he tends to make a lot of food, and he knows a lot of dishes from different cultures because of how much he's traveled. no one on the team complains.
bruce's powers:
glowing eyes <3
inspired by the john turman hulk script, electricity behaves weird around bruce when he gets emotional. he has made lightbulbs and other things explode if he's standing too close to them. he learns how to isolate the effect once he understands more about his relationship with hulk. tony helps by giving him things he doesn't mind getting exploded, and for bruce it also works kind of like a trauma release. he can still accidentally blow something up if he gets distracted / agitated, but it happens less.
the electrical-interference power also manifests as him being able to hear electrical currents. different things have slightly different sounds / pitches and tony always asks him to describe them.
still has a pretty good healing factor as bruce, it's just slower. (in a ih deleted scene sparr says she's never seen someone recover from a tranquilizer as fast as he does). also can't get drunk, but he's never tested that for obvious reasons.
in the novel he's able to dodge a tranq dart "aimed and fired in one motion" so he probably also has faster reflexes.
immune to mind control as bruce and as hulk. both are pissed at wanda for trying it.
based on a scene in the immortal hulk comics, bruce uses automatic writing and drawing to communicate with hulk when hulk isn't out.
can see astral forms. they're clearer and even tangible when hulk is in control, but bruce can also see them.
also inspired by immortal hulk, he has a weird sixth sense for when people are lying to him. as bruce the "itch" he gets can be ignored most of the time, as hulk not so much.
relationship / dynamic headcanons:
no brutasha romance to be seen here they are friends 😌 (if that's your cup of tea that's fine it just isn't mine.)
stays. in. contact. with. betty. (i will forever fight the mcu over this. they are soulmates yall.)
steals tony's band shirts like a gremlin. also steals tony's snacks.
bruce🤝wanda: blurring the lines of science and mysticism. (later comics describe gamma radiation as having a mystical element, "like a magic spell... when viewed from another angle" which is the same reason bruce / hulk tend to have some extrasensory powers).
i just think we were robbed of a bruce and wanda friendship okay.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities
Lot 36
Teleplay by Regina Corrado and Guillermo del Toro
Based on a Short Story by Guillermo del Toro
Directed by Guillermo Navarro
Tumblr media
Lot 36 is a good episode to begin an anthology series helmed by del Toro. It has the creepy yet curious nature that is almost synonymous with the auteur. Although Navarro is better known as a cinematographer, his experience as a television director shone through with the pacing and overall storytelling.
Although the story itself felt cliché—a down on his luck right-wing veteran gets screwed over by his own actions—the use of an almost claustrophobic setting, the inclusion of a demonic ritual, and the cinematic production contributed to an exciting first episode. Additionally, the beautiful set designs and liberal use of practical effects set Lot 36 apart from the media we've grown accustomed to these past few years.
The actors also did a wonderful job, specifically Tim Blake Nelson. While his character was far from likeable, his presence on screen made it that you couldn't take your eyes off him. As you watch him go about his day, you want to know what horrible fate would befall him.
Rating: 4/5
The Graveyard Rats
Teleplay by Vincenzo Natali
Based on a Short Story by Henry Kuttner
Directed by Vincenzo Natali
Tumblr media
The Graveyard Rats, if I'm being honest, took me off-guard. I'm unsure if this was Natali's intention, but there was something comedic about. This isn't meant to be an insult. Rather, I found the levity in this episode pleasant, especially right after watching the first. It's good as a second episode because it keeps the viewers on their toes for the rest of the series.
Natali, much like del Toro, is known for sci-fi and horror. The latter of which is shown in full display here. It takes a lot to unnerve me but even I shuddered at all of the gluttonous rats that appeared on screen. From the thousands that fell on Masson (David Hewlett) to the human-sized abomination under the graveyard, this type of horror creature(s) is rare these days.
Story aside (although it's a good story), the set design was what really captured my attention. I absolutely loved the scene in the mortuary, specifically when the widower and her son were walking past the cadavers. Masson's apartment was also beautiful, with his personality showing through in every set piece. And the graveyard! Or should I say the hidden world underneath it... What I liked most about it was that it made me feel trapped and desperate for escape, something hard to capture and even harder to convey via screen.
Rating: 3.5/5
The Autopsy
Teleplay by David S. Goyer
Based on the Short Story by Michael Shea
Directed by David Prior
Tumblr media
The Autopsy has the best dialogue, so far. Maybe because it was written by Goyer or maybe because F. Murray Abraham, Glynn Turman, and Luke Roberts had excellent deliver, either way it made the story more compelling. You could feel each of the characters' motivation behind their words, creating an emotional connection that makes the events of the episode better felt.
I also enjoyed this episode because of how cinematic it was. To misquote Harry Styles, "It felt like a movie." From the picturesque shots of the small mining town to the angles chosen to present the autopsy, all of it added to the overall production value of the episode. Although I'm unfamiliar with Prior's works, The Autopsy made me curious to check out his filmography.
Additionally, I'm usually not a fan of alien parasite storylines because they tend to be redundant. This was nice though. I liked the mystery aspect of it, especially since it felt like the audience was invited to join in on solving it. I also like the horror elements sprinkled throughout, from the eerie almost haunted feel of the makeshift mortuary to the disembodied voice warning Dr. Winters (Abraham) to get out. Overall, this was an enjoyable episode.

"Light It Up" (1999) is a drama thriller written and directed by Craig Bolotin and stars Usher Raymond, Glynn Turman, Forest Whitaker, Judd Nelson, Rosario Dawson, and Vanessa Williams. Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and his wife, Tracy Edmonds, produced the movie, and Tracy was the soundtrack's executive producer with Michael McQuarn. The soundtrack was a success, peaking at #19 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and featured one charting single by Ja Rule called "How Many Wanna."
By 1999, high school-themed inner-city films were abundant. In addition, Hollywood produced more films to complement the commercialization of hip-hop/R&B towards the youth. Usher was very popular as an R&B singer in 1999, and "Light It Up" was his first featured film as lead actor. Other young cast members were familiar actors from film and T.V., such as Fredro Star, Sara Gilbert, Clifton Collins Jr., and Robert Ri'chard. So, the film had all the necessary elements to be successful. However, 1999 was also the year of the Columbine High School shooting.
In "Light It Up," a scuffle between a high school student and a security officer results in the officer getting shot in the leg. As a result, a standoff between the police officers and students transpires. The premises of the film and Columbine have nothing to do with each other, and Bolotin completed filming before the incident. Still, there were some marketing challenges, as the film earned nearly $6 million on a $13 million budget. A similar thing happened with the movie "Trespass" in 1992 because the racial tension from the L.A. riots hurt the film's marketing value.
Overall, the movie received the most criticism from the writing direction. The acting in the film from the young stars is commendable, and they all maximize their opportunities to excel on screen. It's an intense movie with many layers, as each primary student has a narrative.
Director: Craig Bolotin Writer: Craig Bolotin
Starring Usher, Forest Whitaker, Rosario Dawson, Robert Ri'chard, Judd Nelson, Fredro Starr, Sara Gilbert, Clifton Collins Jr., Glynn Turman, Vic Polizos, Vanessa Williams, Gaddiel Otero, Frank Dominelli
Storyline High school students attend an inner-city NYC school that is in poor condition. After beloved teacher Ken Knowles (Judd Nelson) gets suspended by Principal Allan Armstrong (Glynn Turman), students (Usher, Rosario Dawson, Robert Ri'chard, Clifton Collins Jr.) take a stand, leading to their suspension. Things escalate when an altercation between the security officer Dante Jackson (Forest Whitaker) and a student leads to Jackson getting shot. As tensions mount, the students hold Jackson hostage, and a standoff between them and the police begins while the nation is watching.
Available on DVD and streaming services.
