Love (cannot emphasis how much sarcasm there is in that word) that an official Canadian government response to high cellphone rates is to switch carriers.
Switch it to what? We basically have three companies since one was allowed to eat the forth (with the government saying it wasn't anti-competition and the company eating the other pinky promising they wouldn't jack rates up). Even the smaller companies have to rent infrastructure from the Big Three so there's only so much they can do if that rent costs an arm and a leg.
And that's not touching on how many "small companies" are actually just subsidiaries of the Big Three. You may save $5 but you're still with Telus/Rogers/Bell.
Or that the actual small companies tend to have shit coverage because they don't have the infrastructure available to them and are prevented from getting it. Or their traffic is throttled in favour of the Big Three's customers. Or both.
Or that they're extremely regional thus aren't an option for a huge chunk of Canada's population.
We have no true options and the government has shown time and again that they're fine with monopolies, in multiple industries, and don't care when said monopolies jack up prices to make shareholders and the c-suite more money at the expense of everyone else. At most there will be a verbal slap on the wrist and a giftcard for $25 that people have to register for, for a decade and a half of price gouging.
It's not talked a whole lot about outside the country from what I've seen and heard but Canada is a country of monopolies. A handful of companies own nearly everything, every province has a family or two that owns a hell of a lot (Nova Scotia is basically owned by one family at this point), and our government ignores it. Even the branch that is supposed to be against monopolies is fine with mergers and takeovers in most cases.
Because, you know, the company said it totally wouldn't use consumers' lack of options to increase prices.
#canada#so much of our infrastructure and critical construction such as housing#has been pawned off for decades to private companies#and i forgot to mention one (1) family owns the bridge that is a major international corridor between canada and the us#which is apparently fine even though they fought tooth and nail to stop a bridge they don't own from being built#like our housing crisis can be traced back to the government deciding to stop building public housing in the 90s#because they figured private developers would pick up the slack#affordable apartments don't bring in much money so we got decades of cheap-ass 'luxury condos' instead#and once airbnb became a thing we got entire buildings with units <300sqft#and of course when the party in charge rotates between conservatives and neolibs nothing changes and that can gets kicked down the road#and keeps getting kicked until something collapses and they see the chance to fully privatize an industry#something similar is happening to our healthcare system too#it has been left to languish for years/decades with funding freezes and cuts#and private companies are quick to jump in and get the government stamp of approval to do [thing] that the public system clearly can't do#when [thing] would absolutely be possible if it was actually funded and/or staffed#so many communities were cut off when greyhound closed up shop because there's no government inter-city transportation#we lost internet/banking/cell service/etc nation-wide because one of the big three decided to push an update to live without redundancies#and it bugged and took the entire company's network down#even the government agency that demands major companies have a backup on a different network was taken down because they ignored that#and they got a deal if they kept their backup with rogers while their main network was also rogers#so they couldn't even make an emergency statement or anything about it#half my province also lost all digital infrastructure because it's a private company and making a redundancy line would mean smaller bonuse#it's just so bad#joke all you want about how canada is nice and friendly#but you are wrong and it's hell if you actually live here#the only reason canada is seen as nice is because it's hard to not seem like the better option when the us is your neighbour#and because of decades of pr work to make canada seem friendly and nice and not at all problematic#in some countries you actually have to try to hide you're canadian because of how much we colonize and the damage we do to other countries#yes these tags have derailed from the post but ugh#i take major issue with people who insist canada is nice and has never done anything wrong

"LONG SESSION OF THE CITY COUNCIL," Kingston Daily Standard. February 18, 1913. Page 2. --- Little Business Discussed Besides Paving. ---- Agreement Between City and Buffalo Smelting Company For Lease of Land Ratified. ---- At the meeting of the City Council last night little business was transacted aside from the consideration of the report of the Board of Works in regard to paving Princess street. The Council did not adjourn until near 11.30, but of the whole three hours and a half that the session lasted over an hour and a half was taken up with discussion on this matter.
In addition to the regular reports submitted the Industries Committee submitted an agreement between the city and the Buffalo and Ontario Smelting Company for the lease and purchase of the three and a half acres of ground adjoining the smelter site. According to this agreement the city is to lease the property to the Smelting Company at a rent of $200, a year for two years, the Company at the expiration of that time to have the option of purchasing for $3,000. In the agreement it is stipulated that the Company must use the property for manufacturing purposes.
Ald. Bennett asked what the property cost the city. He was told that the whole parcel of land was purchased for $9,000. Part of this was sold to the North American Smelter Company for $3,000, While the city was losing $3,000, on the deal it was felt that it was worth this to the city to have two such industries located here.
Ald. Bennett then moved that River street be opened up from Orchard street in order that the city may have an outlet on the water front at this point. This motion was carried.
There was very little of importance in the reports of committees. The Civic Finance Committee recommended only the payment of accounts. while the Board of Works recommended the adoption of the work done by the Board last year. The Fire and Light report was passed in totem. the only change recommended was by Ald. Kent, who moved that the clauses in regard to the holding of bazaars and like events in the City Buildings be prohibited while stoves are used for heating, and that all future locations for moving picture shows be restricted to corners of streets, so as to allow exists on two streets, was defeated.
The report of the Utilities Committee was passed without charge. Ald. Stroud asked what was being done with the communication regarding the need of lights in Cataraqui ward, and was informed by the chairman. Dr. Ross that the matter of lighting this section of the city was being given careful consideration and that the question would be taken up as soon as the annual report from the department was received.
Ald. Bennett questioned the clause regarding the reduction of the cost of water to the General Hospital, Hotel Dieu and House of Providence He asked if anything were being done with a view to reducing the water rates of the Orphan's Home and House of Industry. He was informed that all charitable institutions were being considered in a general report which would be submitted shortly.

An architect’s work be it the Architects in Saint Kitts and Nevis must be adequately structured in various terms that include checking documents, checking the specifics of the project, and the actual cost and budget information. In addition to this, they also mention the time constraints and daily progress reports. Significantly, civil engineers must collaborate with the architects to discuss any technical concerns that may come up while putting the concept into practice.

"NO DECISION YET MADE," Daily British Whig (Kingston, Ont.). August 7, 1912. Page 5. --- AS TO WHAT PAVEMENT SHOULD BE USED ---- On the Five Downtown Blocks - The Board of Works is Now Inclined to Lay Creosoted Wood Blocks. ---- The nature of the pavement for the five blocks on Clarence, Wellington, Brock and Bagot streets is not decided upon yet. A meeting of the board of works was held on Tuesday after noon, but it has no recommendation to forward to council as yet, on account of some developments.
However, the board is favorably inclined to pave these blocks with creosoted wood blocks, generally acknowledged to be the best pavement in the market. The United States Wood Block company, the manufacturers, quoted a price, by telegram, owing to the short notice. It was $1.87 square yard for the blocks or $2.98 a square yard laid on the street. The quotation was somewhat indefinite, and it is not likely the $2.85 includes the curbing and extras. The engineer instructed to obtain the necessary information. The blocks ar three inches thick, and treated with a chemical which insures them against damage by water or frost. The road laid with such is guaranteed for seven years. These blocks have and are being laid in many of the heavy traffic streets in New York and Philadelphia, and this ought to be sufficient guarantee as to their wearing quality. At $2.98 a square yard, the price would be about $21.150 for the locks to be paved. The company suggests that the city do the work, under its superintendent.
John Mofiett, of Westrumite, limited, Brantford, explained the qualities and process of making of his Westramite pavement. This was the sheet pavement which is also under consideration. It is a mixture of Bermuda and Trinidad asphalt. Mr. Moffett spoke of the cooking of the mixture being by steam, stirring by compressed aid, and of being shipped in barrels to the scene of operations, where it is laid cold on the street. There is a five-inch foundation of cement and acetone. After it is finished it must set for four or five days. The Brantford company guarantees a street Iaid with Westrumite for five years, and it is estimated that its life is for ten to fifteen years, according to the traffic. The company also has a grade "B," which is adapted to heavier traffic. A number of the cities and towns in Western Ontario have streets laid with this pavement. The price tendered is $2.36 s square yard.
The Godson Contracting company, of Toronto, quoted prices on three grades of its retrobit sheet pavement. There were $1.25, and a square yard, with extras. Many of the streets in Toronto are laid with this pavement. The company has thirty-nine years experience in paving.
The Central Paving company, of Ottawa, also tendered a price of about $19,165 for the work. The company is at present doing a 300,000 con tract at Amherst, N.S., for the department of railways and canals.
The Barber Asphalt Paving company, of Montreal, and the Kocmac company, of Thorold, wrote, saying that, owing to the short notice given, they were unable to tender.
On the advice of the company supplying the Bermudez asphalt to be used in the paving of Barrie street, the board reconsidered the purchasing of a 100-gallon kettle, instead of a 150-gallon kettle for heating the material. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and engineer.
Ald. Litton asked what progress was being made at the Barrie street road way. The engineer replied that it was being trimmed up, the scarifying would soon be done, and that what was holding the work back a little was the new roller and heating kettle to be purchased.
The pavement first considered and which tenders were received, was asphalt block, as laid last year. The quotation was $3.50 a square yard, said. K. J. Melelland, city engineer. declares that the city could do the work for 23.10 a square yard.
The members of the board present were Alds. Elliott (chairman), Couper, Peters, Litton, Fair and Harty.
