Orchestra Slammed For Posting ‘Some Of The Worst AI-Generated Artwork’
What started as an orchestra’s attempt to entice audiences to a night of classical music has turned into yet another heated debate over AI-generated art.
The controversy follows a Facebook post by Australia’s Queensland Symphony Orchestra that features an image of a couple sitting in a concert hall with rows of violinists behind them. “Want to do something different this Saturday? Come see an orchestra play. We think you'll love it,” the QSO wrote alongside the headline “Experience the orchestra.”
Countered one Facebook user, “Experience hiring a goddamn photographer. "
It’s easy to spot AI’s imprint on the image, posted February 22. The guy’s fingers are oddly elongated and a piece of the woman’s diaphanous beige skirt appears to have split off from the rest of the garment and landed in her date’s lap.
But it’s not just the quality of the image that’s riled viewers.
“This is some of the worst AI generated artwork we’ve seen, but even worse is that it comes from an arts organization like the Queensland Symphony Orchestra that should be paying artists, not using AI,” the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance said in a March 4 Facebook response to the image. “It is inappropriate, unprofessional and disrespectful to audiences and the musicians of the QSO.”
MEAA describes itself as the largest and most established union and industry advocate for Australia’s creative professionals.
QSO, for its part, defended the photo. “Queensland Symphony Orchestra is a dynamic arts organization with a rich 77-year history and a strategic future focus,” it said in a statement. “We encourage exploration, innovation, experimentation and the adoption of new technologies across all facets of the business.”
That an AI-generated image has once again caused a stir shouldn’t come as a surprise. As generative AI finds its footing, it’s prompting reactions from excitement about the tool’s creative potential to worry it will steal artists’ work to train datasets, impact their livelihood and even alter creativity itself.
Last week brought news that Dutch metal band Pestilence unveiled a new cover for its latest album following an earlier version made with the help of artificial intelligence. Critics of the original album cover called it “lifeless,” “soulless” and “a big slap in the face to any real, living artists in the world.” Some fans, however, far preferred the first image.
The image posted by Queensland Symphony Orchestra generated similar mixed responses, with some on Facebook expressing outrage and others simply finding amusement in the image’s most distorted elements—“pretty sure this was attached to John Hurt’s face in Alien,” one person wrote of the couple’s odd-looking entwined hands. Some defended AI as a technology that should be embraced.
“It makes no sense at all to object to people using generative AI, and to call it somehow ‘disrespectful’ or ‘unprofessional,’” one wrote in response to MEAA’s criticism. “On what basis? The quality is the issue here, not the tool. Don't fear the future.”
The image reportedly comes from stock image company Shutterstock, which in October 2022 announced it would start selling images by OpenAI's Dall-E image generator in an expansion of the existing relationship between the two companies.
Turning up the volume on the pushback to QSO are reports that orchestra members themselves opposed the image.
Slipped Disc, which covers all things classical music, cited an inside source saying the picture caused an uproar among orchestra musicians, and that upon expressing their concerns to the QSO marketing department, they were were told to “stay in their lane” and that it’s “no one else’s job to market.’
If that marketing team abides by the saying “all publicity is good publicity,” there could be some high-fiving going around over there.
“Bravo QSO on the publicity this image has generated,” one viewer of the brouhaha observed on Facebook. “For all the naysayers I read this as a bit of fun.”

A post shared by Courtney Act (@courtneyact)
Born in Brisbane and known as Shane Jenek out of drag, Courtney Act made waves in 2003 by auditioning in drag and placing 13th in the first season of Australian Idol.
She then went on to tie for runner-up in RuPaul’s Drag Race U.S. season 6 and won Celebrity Big Brother UK in 2018. Courtney has become an Australian household name, representing the LGBTQIA+ community on a number of TV shows, specials and Pride events.
QSO Chief Executive, Yarmila Alfonzetti is relishing the groundbreaking collaboration saying:
“Courtney Act will make very welcome history (herstory) as the first drag queen to share the stage with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.”
Courtney, herself, couldn’t be more excited to be joining QSO on stage for this celebration of Olivia Newton-John.
“Who isn’t a fan of Olivia Newton-John?” Courtney asks.
“I’m thrilled to celebrate her music and legacy alongside Queensland Symphony Orchestra. It promises to be an incredible evening!”
All about Olivia
The queers and Olivia Newton-John have always gone together like “rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong,” and it’s not hard to see why.
Starting her career in 1971, Newton-John had several pop hits in Australia, the UK and the US.  Honestly I Love You became her signature song and first pop number-one.
Then in 1978, Olivia Newton-John was immortalised alongside John Travolta in the ridiculously fun movie musical, Grease.
It was here that generation after generation would fall in love with Sandy, the bright-eyed, sweet-as-pie Aussie high schooler from Rydell High.
Soon after in 1980, Newton-John went on to star in the cult film, Xanadu. A critical failure at the time, its soundtrack would then go on to be certified double platinum with five top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1981, one year after Xanadu’s release, Olivia struck double platinum with Physical. It spent ten sexy weeks atop the Billboard Top 100.
The saucy, satirical music video for Physical was also where Olivia solidified her status as a queer icon.
Olivia starred as a flirty fitness instructor alongside oiled-up hunks in short-shorts, and some not-so-ripped men used for comedic effect (it was the problematic 80s).
Despite the overtly sexual nature of the video, it was the original end of this video clip that found controversy.  Two of the oil-drenched himbos walked through the doors of this bathhouse set hand-in-hand.
This resulted in MTV clutching its pearls and removing the homoerotic closing shot before it was aired. This, however, still wasn’t enough to stop it from becoming one of the most iconic music videos of the decade.
Olivia brought awareness to the global AIDS crisis by appearing in the 1996 film, It’s My Party, one of the first feature films that addressed the topic of AIDS patients dying with dignity.
Olivia was also a vocal advocate for marriage equality in the 2010s, being one of the first celebrities to show her public support for the movement in Australia.
Live your Olivia fantasy
QSO wants to see you dress in your Olivia Newton-John fantasy best!
Dress in 80s glam, roller disco realness or full Grease glory. Whatever your inner or outer drag desires, you are welcome!
Fans of Olivia Newton-John and fans of a camp ol’ time will not be disappointed with a ticket to Hopelessly Devoted: A Celebration of Olivia Newton-John.

Damien Hirst 1992 The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.  Tiger shark, glass, steel, 5% formaldehyde solution; 213 cm × 518 cm (213 in × 213 in).
1. The artist, Damien Hirst, is a leading member of the Young British Artist.
2. The artwork was funded by Charles Saatchi, who offered to pay for whatever Hirst wanted to create.
3. The shark cost 6,000 pounds and the whole project cost around 50,000 pounds.
4. Hirst wanted a shark "big enough to eat you," a fisherman was hired to catch it off Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia.
5. This artwork is considered an iconic piece of the 1990s in Britian and is a symbol of Britart worldwide.
At first glance the artwork is daunting and scary as you are looking at a shark with their mouth wide open. After reading about this artwork, my opinion on it has changed. I now know that the piece depicts a life and death scenario. The shark is suspended and still, making the mood feel cold, dark, and depressing.
#2
A work of art in my life is a recent one. My mom collected a bunch of photos and merged them onto a purple background. The purple is the color of the organization I was a part of, and the photos are me participating with the organization. This was a big part of my life so far, and my mom wanted to frame to remind me of when I was in it. This gift is close to me and even it only took photos and a purple background, it means a lot more to me.
#3
I am 19 years old and a male. I was born in California, raised in Missouri, and now live in Florida. I am of white ethnicity comprising of German, Irish, Scottish, English, French, and Welsch. I am a musician and am a part of Symphony Orchestra, Jazz band, jazz combo, Jazz Presidential Combo, and Percussion Ensemble. I work at Sarasota High School as the Percussion Director. I think I am one of the luckiest people on the planet.
#4
I am a music major, so music has been a major part of my life and interest me every day. The art that is #2 is also #4 because it represents what I love to do and who I get to do it with.

Opera Queensland is pushing boundaries with 2024 season
Opera Queensland’s 2024 season throws down the gauntlet for ambitious programming and fresh approaches to what opera can be.
“If we are not taking risks as an arts company, why are we here?” artistic director Patrick Nolan says.
“The stage is a place to celebrate and interrogate questions and ideas we are thinking about as a community.
“More than ever, we need to challenge ourselves to imagine new ways of living, new ways of connecting with each other and our environment.
“Opera provides us with a space to do this in ever more exciting and original ways.”
Brisbane Bel Canto
In April, a brand-new festival dedicated to the ever-popular repertoire of Italian opera from the mid-19th century will take over Brisbane.
Brisbane Bel Canto will see Australian-first performances from superstar soprano Jessica Pratt alongside maestro Richard Mills and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
In May, Opera Queensland will go west with the Festival of Outback Opera in Winton and Longreach.
Music lovers from around Australia and the world will make the annual pilgrimage to the Outback to experience big voices and big skies.

Baroque opera meets acrobatics
In July, Opera Queensland reunites with Circa for Dido and Aeneas, a tale about a pair of lovers, an evil sorceress and a doomed affair.
The timeless story of love and tragedy with a contemporary twist will fuse Baroque opera with acrobatics in QPAC’s Playhouse Theatre.
Heartwarming musical Straight from the Strait will also make a world premiere in 2024 during Brisbane Festival.
The Torres Strait Islander-led production tells the remarkable story of a group of railway construction workers, who broke a world record in 1968.

Later this year, the Opera Queensland Studio Series, offers audiences the opportunity to experience six big voices in the intimate space of the Opera Queensland Studio.
