My buddy @/astrofalls and I have had a telescope fixed on a rather obscure region in Cepheus over the last month and noticed something odd . A very faint object that neither of us had seen before. After further review we decided to point a much larger scope at it. At first, we didn’t see too much but gave it more time. After 30 or so hours, a faint object started to appear but more time was necessary, so we decided to double down yet again. After collecting over 60 hours of light, we realized that we had imaged something significant. Something new. After much research we have come to the conclusion that this is the first ever image of an object only known to scientists through radio studies.

A little about the object from what we have been able to gather; The blue web of nebulosity seen here, is supernova remnant G108-6.2, the remains of an ultra massive star which consumed all of its fuel and died in a violent explosion approximately ten thousand years ago. The remains of the star have been racing outwards ever since. Prior to this image, this object has not been studied in visible light because the nebula is made mostly out of oxygen gas. The teal light of oxygen emission is typically ignored in scientific study.

We have decided to name the object ‘The Orb Weaver Nebula’. When I got into this I never expected something like this would happen. I guess you just expect that everything has been imaged but this is proof that there are still many pockets out there that have yet to be seen . This experience gets me fired up to keep exploring the night sky.
