Australian Literature on Post Colonial Society - thoughts and feelings
I would like to start this with a preface. I am a white ‘Australian’ woman. My life has been shaped by the effects of post colonialism, and that is something I am only really becoming more aware of this in my adulthood. My grandfather on my mother's side was a logger here in Tasmania back when that was fashionable, and the TVs were all black and white. In contrast, my mother is a greenie. I don't fully grasp the Indigenous feelings toward what they call 'country', I cannot. It is not part of me in the same way. It isn't my culture, or my space to inhabit.
But I do wish I understood more.
It's only in recent years that any Indigenous literature has found its way to me, that I've learned how they once took care of this land we call home. Before then, the Australian literature I consumed was predominantly written by white men and women who, like me, didn't have another perspective on our nation. Now that Indigenous stories are becoming more easily accessible in the mainstream it is becoming far more apparent that we have had the mic for far too long and we don't know the land as well as we thought.
Australia isn't Britain, but we pretended it was. We worked the land as though it was, and we've made so many mistakes by doing so.

Chloe Hooper, the author of The Arsonist: A Mind on Fire (2018) (read on Audible) says it well late in chapter one, how our native trees, the eucalyptus, create the perfect environment for fire around them and ward off any new growth with natural chemicals. Additionally, how the ‘Indigenous Australians managed this pyrophile ecology to their own advantage, [but] among European settlers it created a sub-community of destructive fire setters’ (Chapter 1, 15:22-15:31) a horrific trend that continues today. The early European colonisers didn’t see the point of the indigenous ways native Australians dealt with this ‘pyrophile ecology’ and again, to this day, governments pointedly refuse to listen. The results are unfortunately in our news every summer.

Our government is debating being in ‘a voice’ for Indigenous Australians into parliament, but again, will they even listen to that voice? I have my doubts when they won’t even listen to anyone else regardless of decent once in power. But I digress, I’m not here to talk about politics today.

Looking back on the set readings for The Arsonist for this assignment I looked at Moreton-Robinson’s chapter I still call Australia Home (2003) and found that a lot of it resonated with my feelings on the currently entrenched capitalist society here in Australia. The notion of ownership vs ‘the Indigenous sense of belonging’ (23) that for many of European/British decent just doesn’t seem to compute. I place myself in that category too, for the cultures are so very different that everywhere we turn, 99% of the media we consume that is Australian is predominantly made by and for those of European decent. Yes, in recent decades things have improved marginally, but that doesn’t undercut the fact that we are still here, and still hold the mic. We still claim ownership of the country, and we still have a white man as a ‘leader’. We still don’t listen as much as we should.
Going back to Hooper’s The Arsonist (2018) in chapter 4 she touches more on the ways native Australians used fire to their advantage. Something that I find fascinating and didn’t really know until reading this book.
‘Aboriginals used fire for illumination, for signalling, for creating tracks for travel, for inducing green growth for the animals they hunted. For pursuing animals fleeing a blazes flank, for harvesting such food as sweet tuberous yam roots and for preventing larger conflagrations which they could not control. Fire was used in ceremonies, and there were ceremonies about fire. Flames and their endless complex play with the seasons and flora and wind were inseparable from daily life and culture.’ (Chapter 4, 2:40-3:14)
In this one section, I have learnt more than I ever did in school about the native and traditional owners of this land. Which is both incredibly sad and pretty on par for what we can expect of an education system and syllabus build for and by white Europeans. The books I read in High school were all along the same vein, throwing ‘classics’ at us all written back in Europe, and the few Australian books that were chosen were written by, predominantly, white men.
Even this unit, makes me question things. Why was Hoopers book, a white woman, chosen over someone like Victor Steffensen, a man of Indigenous decent who wrote Fire Country back in 2020? It’s theme and messaging and perspective could certainly benefit this unit, and yet, it’s overlooked.

Our society in Australia is built upon the long lingering effects of colonialism, our literature (and schools) mirror this in ways that aren’t always the clearest until we look back. Hindsight is 20-20 as it’s said. The ways we teach our children, farm and work the land, and govern are all stark reminders of where most of us came from and how we have tried to make Australia more like those lands from which our ancestors travelled.
With this line of thought we must ponder the question of what Australian literature really means when we say it. Graham Huggan, in his book Australian Literature: Postcolonialism, Racism, Transnationalism (2007) posits that that it ‘represents a collective national project’ (5) and that along this line of thought ‘Australian literature is an index of the national consciousness if, at the same time, a necessarily unreliable descriptor of the rapidly transforming realities of national social and cultural life’ (5) which is both accurate and an interesting way to put it. Australia as it is now, is simply put, a complicated mess and the literature we are now producing has begun to show it. The more culturally and racially diverse the media we release and thus more diverse perspectives we consume as a result the better and more prepared we are to properly challenge the norms that our forebears put in place.

It's said that we must understand where we’ve been to know where it is we’re going. However, when it comes to colonial roots, how far we look back can ultimately determine the path we choose. If all we look back to is those who arrived, uninvited and claimed land that wasn’t theirs, all we have is that perspective. I cannot remember a single piece of media, literature or otherwise, that focused on an Indigenous Perspective from before, or during the time of colonisation. At least not one that wasn’t made by the colonisers themselves and thus the portrayal was skewed horribly.
In closing, I suppose I’ll say, that while Australian literature is in a bit of a messy state, there are far more diverse voices than there were 15 years ago now in circulation and that warms my heart. For it allows people like me, of European decent, that burn after 10 seconds in the Aussie sun, to read and hear from people from differing backgrounds and cultures that might know better than me about the land I live on.
And that, I think, is a gift.

1991. I was just 11 years old. “Seinfeld” debuted on TV and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” was a box office hit. You were probably listening to Bryan Adams, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, R.E.M, (or maybe Boys II Men?!) Kentucky Fried Chicken officially changed its name to KFC, and Nintendo released the Super Nintendo. It was also the year my father bought me a used go-kart from the Trading Post (no eBay or craigslist back then) marking the commencement of my motorsport ‘career’. Whilst I had always loved watching motorsport as a child, I had no idea that go-karting was even a ‘thing’. Nor did I appreciate at the time, the journey that the sport would take me on over the next 12 years…
Shameless self-promotion: My first-day karting, 1991, and me racing – Circa 1999
  I started racing at our local circuit in Queanbeyan, just outside of Canberra. It was a small facility managed by a committed team of volunteers that formed the Canberra Kart Racing Club. Back then, karting had just started to shake the pre-conceived idea that ‘go-carts’ were box steel frames with lawnmower motors. Plastic bodywork had been added for safety and aesthetics, and karts started to look really cool. There were a number of controlled classes, using varied 100cc Yamaha engines, but importantly this era lent itself to a group of premier classes that provided arguably the biggest spectacle the sport of karting has seen – The CIK series, comprised of Reed and Rotary valve engines, producing around 30 Horse Power. With a combined weight of 140kg (Kart and Driver) these machines were unbelievably fast. Mounted with super-sticky ‘open’ tyres, this made for what many believe to be the best era of karting ever.
These classes were a massive drawcard for drivers and spectators alike across the world. With race meetings typically boasting capacity fields of 40+ karts, it was a truly exciting time that many in the sport now look back fondly upon. It can be difficult to appreciate how great an era can be when you are actively a part of it. (I believe this is true for professional careers, relationships, friendships, hobbies, and interests) but fast-forward to 2018 and I look back fondly on a period that would see the world of karting nurture some of the world’s best drivers, even if they were only teenagers at the time. Formula One stars including Schumacher, Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen and Weber all honed their skills in karting during this golden era.
Over time, karting has seen advances in the development of engines, chassis, and parts that have dramatically transformed the sport. Most classes now feature centrifugal clutches or gearboxes, water cooling and radiators, and bulky/unsightly fairings and aero kits. Many compete with data loggers and telemetry systems. These additions have also seen the cost of the sport skyrocket. In the spirit of bringing karting back to its roots, a group of Australian karting enthusiasts have banded together to revive the karting scene of the 1990s. The Retro Karting Australia group (RKA) is a historic kart race series. Drivers can restore and enter only pre-2000 chassis and direct-drive 100cc 2-stroke motors (air cooled reed or rotary valve), setting the scene for competitive kart racing at phenomenal speeds of up to 110kph! The series is aimed at competitors who wish to race this era of karts, with an emphasis on competitive, fair, safe, enjoyable and affordable kart racing, and to relive this special period in kart racing history.
One of the challenges faced by many of the entrants is seeking out eligible chassis and motors to compete. I asked competitor Kurt Woodward how he managed to track his equipment down; “I found my first kart via some RKA contacts. I ended up having to buy an engine from overseas. This is always risky, as you cant inspect them. As it turned out, mine was seized! I’ve since bought another kart off Gumtree and other engines off the RKA crew. The guys are pretty well connected, and there always seems to be someone in the know!”
Having spent many years racing myself as a kid, teenager, and young adult, I am fortunate to know a number of those involved in the current revival who invited me out to see the second round of their national championship, being held at Eastern Creek Kart Raceway, 40km west of Sydney. On my arrival, I was immediately reminded of my time in the sport, with the tangy smell of 2-stroke and the buzzing and ringing of the finned air-cooled power units. I couldn’t wait to see them race and to get on track to get some images of these machines at speed. The format for racing included qualifying sessions held on Saturday, and then two heats, a pre-final and the final held on Sunday.
Throughout the day, I made an effort to catch up with a number of drivers, to better understand their reasons for getting involved in the sport once more, and spending the time and money it takes to restore these wonderful machines. Series volunteer and driver Shaun Atherton explains; “Nothing beats the sound of the old Formula A karts at 20,000 rpm! It’s the purest form of racing. And the best part now is to see so many familiar faces returning to the sport. Friends from years ago are meeting to race again, sharing a number of great stories over a beer at the end of a day’s racing.”
Kurt Woodward added; “The RKA to me is an awesome bunch of people, who band together to enjoy some old-school racing. Everyone pitches in to help each other out – We all have an awesome time, both on and off the track; Something I think the modern, mainstream karting is now missing. That’s why I do it – To have fun and race hard!”
The entries were split across three classes, including the Historic class, F100 Light at 145kg, and F100 Heavy at 160kg (kart + driver) keeping the competition tight across both fields throughout the heats and pre-final. After hotly contested races, the eventual winners of the finals were Nick Agland in F100 Light (Tibikart/Italsistem), and Josh Pontello in F100 Heavy (Parolin/Vortex).
After the weekend’s racing, the group enjoyed a low-key presentation over drinks where sponsored goods and trophies were passed on to the winners, as well as a number of awards for best-presented kart, spirit of RKA100 and the revered hard-luck story.
Without a doubt, the RKA can be proud of achieving their goal of bringing the karts, engines (and drivers) back from a bygone era, and reinstating the spirit and sportsmanship that so many miss.

Restaurant 1000 heralds McDonald’s Australia’s sustainable future
McDonald’s Australia has heralded a new era of sustainability by opening its 1000th restaurant as the company’s sustainability flagship for Australia.
As part of the project, WaterGroup has deployed its smart water metering solution into the flagship restaurant, forming one of 25 core sustainability initiatives the restaurant is using to reduce its environmental impact with the aim to test, evaluate and implement industry-leading sustainability innovations into the future.
“At WaterGroup, saving water for our customers is our top priority. We are so proud to assist McDonald’s with our state-of-the-art technology to achieve real savings,” WaterGroup Managing Director Guenter Hauber-Davidson said.
“Leaking pipes, leaky toilets, fixtures, valves or sprinklers are some of the typical causes of abnormally high water use. With our solution in place, the Melton South restaurant can quickly identify when these occur to save water and money.”
McDonald’s Australia National Director of Development Diana Grosmann said, “As a sustainability innovation hub, Restaurant 1000 will play a crucial role in enabling us to continue to design and build commercially practical sustainability solutions into every new Macca’s restaurant in the years to come.”

McDonald’s Australia Director of Supply Chain and Sustainability Kylie Freeland added, “Through collaboration with the franchisee of the restaurant, as well as partners like WaterGroup, we hope that Restaurant 1000 will allow us to learn quickly and expand successful innovation trials that enable us to continue to implement practices, equipment and products to improve our environmental impact.”
WaterGroup’s smart water metering solution comprises a smart NB-IoT-enabled logger that connects to a site’s existing water meter. The data from that meter is then sent to the cloud and is accessible via a client-facing portal. At Melton South they also have WaterGroup’s AWARE service, where the WaterGroup team monitor and alert the restaurant of unusual water usage turning insights into action.
During the 2019 financial year, WaterGroup has delivered measurable outcomes for its clients with water savings of almost 300 million litres and cost savings of more than $1 million.
“We wish the McDonald’s South Melton team great success with their new restaurant and look forward to saving them water and money,” Hauber-Davidson said.
Other sustainability initiatives
Restaurant 1000 customers will be served a series of new packaging items including paper straws, wooden cutlery and paper sundae cups, as McDonald’s Australia continues to phase out all plastic straws and plastic cutlery from its restaurants nationwide. The collective impact of these transitions will remove 860 tonnes of plastic from the McDonald’s system.
The restaurant will also incorporate energy-efficient air-conditioning systems, hydrocarbon equipment and a building monitoring system to help collectively reduce carbon emissions and energy used.
“Over the coming three years we plan to invest more than $500 million to open over 80 new restaurants across Australia, incorporating a range of core sustainability elements from Restaurant 1000, including PlayPlaces made with recycled content and energy-efficient equipment, as well as the use of 100% renewable energy at some restaurants.
“Through partnership with the franchisee of the restaurant, Ben Westover, we hope Restaurant 1000 will allow us to learn quickly and expand successful innovation trials, so we can continue to implement practices, equipment and products to improve our environmental impact,” Grosmann said.

In early 2021, Restaurant 1000 will commence trialling a front-of-house waste recycling system, as the business moves towards achieving its goal of diverting front-of-house waste from landfill. The trial will see front-of-house waste from Restaurant 1000 recycled into carry out bags and wraps packaging.

On-site solar panels installed on a custom roof structure over the drive-thru. The entire solar system at the restaurant is expected to generate 42,000 kWh per year.
Families will be able to introduce their children to recycling via a specially designed Happy Meal toy collection bin. Through our reverse logistics system, pre-loved Happy Meal toys will be returned to our distributor before being provided to a third party for recycling.
The PlayPlace equipment utilises old play equipment repurposed into new decks, climbers, slide tubes and window panels — 60% of the entire structure is sourced from old Macca’s play equipment, with the remaining 40% of material being 100% recyclable at end of life.
Carbon-neutral McDelivery via Uber Eats and DoorDash, where carbon credits will be used to offset the emissions from deliveries made from Restaurant 1000 for 12 months.
McDonald’s distributor will act as a consolidation for waste streams such as cardboard, cups, coffee grinds and soft plastics and return these to a central location, creating opportunities for circular economies.
All lighting and signage at Restaurant 1000 utilises LEDs, which use around 80% less energy than neon systems, meaning there’s less strain on the environment and electricity grid. LEDs also don’t include any toxic gases and are cleanly recycled.
The green wall at the entry to Restaurant 1000’s dining room, full of living plants that increase biodiversity, provides insulation and clean the air.
Wheel stops and kerbing throughout the drive-thru and car park are made from recycled cups and plastics. The wheel stops are made only from cups and plastics from McDonald’s restaurants and not only complete the loop for a circular economy, but are more hard-wearing than concrete alternatives.
Two electric vehicle charging stations provided by Evie Networks, and supplied by 100% renewable energy.
A bulk oil supply system that pumps bulk oil directly from the tanker into a plumbed tank in the restaurant, reducing the cardboard and plastic packaging, which would have previously been delivered each week.
Similar to the bulk oil supply system, the restaurant utilises a bulk milk system that will remove the need for approximately 1650 kg of plastic bottles from the restaurant.
Strategically placed sensors will monitor the amount of sunlight shining into the restaurant. If it’s a bright day, the sensors will automatically dim the lights in the dining room to conserve energy.
Hydrocarbon refrigerant equipment will vastly reduce the carbon footprint of the restaurant due to its low Global Warming Potential and Zero Ozone Depleting Potential.
A high-efficiency air-conditioning system that doesn’t generate as much heat and therefore doesn’t force the system to work as hard to cool. This means the air conditioning system is up to 32% more efficient than the minimum BCA-compliant system.
Paper straws, wooden cutlery, paper sundae cups and a new type of wrap that can be composted will all be trialled at the restaurant.
All irrigation on-site will utilise two 5000 L water tanks that collect and harvest rainwater.
Using specialist technology provided by WaterGroup, water usage will be monitored by a cloud-based system that will help to identify any anomalies so any leaks are addressed early.
The restaurant will also use a heat recovery hot water system that absorbs heat from the air-conditioning system to heat water. This system is more efficient than conventional water heaters and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
All timber cladding is Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification endorsed.
A building-monitoring system will assist McDonald’s to optimise energy use while the restaurant serves customers. Any anomalies in the air conditioning, lighting and refrigeration system will trigger an alert so the restaurant can rectify immediately.
