BOOTLEGS 2023
The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!
Anyhoo, here's a sampling of the Doom & Gloom goods from 2023 to get you caught up ... thank you to the tapers, the archivists, the fans, the innocents.

Wrestler ANNUAL: Winter 1983
‘THE WRESTLER’ REUNITES THE JAGGERS FAMILY
For years, Bobby Jaggers hadn’t seen his father. He didn’t know where he was, or even if he was dead or alive. Then a letter came into our office from Jagger’s Dad, asking for help in locating his son. It seemed a simple task for such an awesome result. We’re glad it turned out so well.
By Bill Apter
THE LETTER WAS addressed to me. I opened the envelope, as I open all my mail first thing in the morning. Usually, it’s a letter from a fan asking a question, a report on some match, free-lance photos, requests for advice on breaking into wrestling, a personal letter to be forwarded to some wrestler.
But this one was different. Very different.
Dear Bill Apter:
I wish to express my sincere thanks for your help in locating my son Bobby Jaggers. It was through your magazine and individual help that we have again located each other.
It’s a small world only when you are not the one looking for someone.
I have no doubt it couldn’t have been accomplished without your help.
This letter was signed Bobby Jaggers’ father, Lewis Jeaudion.
Mr. Jeaudion enclosed a letter describing his ordeal. I decided to include it in its entirety.
“His name was Bobby Jeaudion. Even as a little boy, he was big. I remember when Bobby was 12 and a member of the Washington Little League baseball champions. Baseball was his first love. Bob was a power hitter with homeruns a specialty. But he loved all sports and lettered in both baseball and football at our local high school in Vancouver, Washington.
Bob’s ambitions were to go into college sports, eventually pro sports, and hopefully a coaching position. But life has a way of changing plans. During Bob’s senior year in high school, his mother died suddenly from a massive heart attack. After graduation, Bob joined the Army. Bob insisted on volunteering for duty in Vietnam. He spent one year in Vietnam with the First Comb as a combat infantry man.
After discharge, Bob returned to his home town, found a job at a local mill, and attempted to settle down. For a while, Bob submerged his deep love for sports. Yet a friendship with some of the local wrestlers, especially Lonnie Mayne, rekindled Bob’s dormant desires. One day Bob decided to try a career in professional wrestling and took to the road to find his fame and fortune.
Several years passed, and although we were able to maintain contact, again life changed plans.
[Days after being reunited with his father, Bobby Jaggers battles Jim Garvin. Above: Bobby Applies a headlock. Below: Jaggers lands an elbow.]
Single life wasn’t for me. After eight years of loneliness. I found someone to share my life. And 31 years in the Fire Department enabled me to retire. With retirement and my new partner came a new life.
I sold the old home and moved to a one-acre lot on the banks of one of my favorite fishing streams. Unfortunately, in all the hectic shuffling, Bob and I lost contact. Try as I might, I couldn’t locate him.
My only clue was his profession-a pro wrestler.
[Bobby looks to ringside as he receives encouragement from his number one supporter, his father. Almost everyone has noticed that Bobby's intensity has increased since the reunion.]
I pressed my search in this direction. At the Portland Arena I found a local fan sincere in the belief Bob was wrestling somewhere in Montana. However, A number of phone calls reached a dead end.
I was desperate. I really didn’t know what to do. I turned to Bill Apter, managing editor of The Wrestler, for help. I wrote Mr. Apter and explained my predicament. A week later, a letter arrived. Just a line, a name, and a number.
My call to that number reunited my son and me. My thanks go out to all the editors of The Wrestler magazine. This would have been an impossible task without their help.”
[Garvin doubles over in pain as Jaggers twists his left wrist. Although Jaggers is not a fan favorite, this story is a touching one for any caring human being.]
Every once in a while you do something that makes you feel very good. When i received Mr. Jeaudion’s request, I immediately got hold of the proper people and forwarded the information. As wrestling people always do, they respond quickly and with compassion.
I don’t want to receive any credit for this. I didn’t do this to have people say what a nice guy I am. I didn’t even want to receive publicity about this affair, but both Jaggers and his Dad insisted.
Sometimes you forget that there are people involved in wrestling. Sometimes the senseless savagery and relentless treachery numbs you to the kinder, decent people who comprise the majority of the sport.
I'm glad I was able to bring together two people. I'm very glad.

The trains reached here at approximately 6:00 a.m., one hour behind schedule, bringing evacuees from Wapato, Wenatchee, and Kennewick, Washington. The newcomers were greeted by several hundred early birds, who managed to forgo a few winks. The new arrivals got off the train by families and filed through the gate into the building to register and receive instructions before proceeding to their new quarters. Soldiers that accompanied the special train helped to carry small packages of the elderly evacuees as well as aid them in getting off the train. While the new arrivals were getting acquainted with the environment a crow of volunteer workers unloaded the baggage onto the platform. The population figures are slated for another boost tomorrow with the arrival of approximately 628 evacuees from Yakima, Toppenish, and Wapato, Washington. BE PREPARED
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law
To help other people at all times
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
The scout oath, watchword of a million American Boy Scouts.  Words familiar to millions of other follow Americans.  The Boy Scouts of America, the admiration of a nation.
Here as well as else where, the boy scout perform their daily duty of service in a typical scout manner.
In this center, the boy scouts carry on with their duty, being prepared whenever the need arises.  Being of service to the entire center in every possible way, besides their regular drum and bugle practices.  Each morning the boy scouts raise old glory to the mast; and each evening lower her to rest.  Ushering, guarding, first-aid, and numerous other lines of work are a part of the daily routine performed by the boy scouts.  From dawn to dusk, the services of the boy scouts never cease.
They need no words of praise or gratitude, for the tasks they perform are part of their duty to aid other people at all times.  And seldom are words of appreciation expressed to the boy scouts for the public knows too well that the tasks performed by them are in the line of their duty.  Without expressed words of praise of gratitude, the boy scouts carry on, knowing there is a job to be done.
To the boy scouts add our words of sincere appreciation.  The cooperative spirit of the boy scouts has proven invaluable to all of us.  That their spirits has proven invaluable to all of us.  That their spirit has proven invaluable to all of us.  That their spirit of cooperation should be a practice we must all acquire some day in the near future.  To you, we say "Thanks a Million."

[in bubble letters]SCOOP.
Hello everybody!  I think I will quote a letter from a girl friend this time to show you how much they mis me on the outside.
(Quote)
My dear Stinky:
I miss you so much up here that I think I will add another boy friend to my list to make up for you Of course, honey, he can never take your place as he has money, looks, clothes, and the cutest sport coupe and stuff that you never had.  Have you still got that mop-hair full of knots?  Remember, sweet, on those full moonlight nights, when you and I used to sit under a spreading apple tree --- and untie the knots in your hair?  My goodness, it seems like a long time since you slapped me in the face and broke your hand, well, I'll always remain true to you so don't worry, and write back soon.
Lovingly yours
M. H.
(Unquote)
I guess this letter will prove to all you bums that I have some personality and from nowon[sic] please show some respect for me.  Nuff said, as I hate to talk about myself all of the time
******
BY THE GATE
I stood by the gate and saw them pass,
Sorrowful, yet eager and then alas,
With misty eyes and cheerful shouts,
"Be seeing you , in a month or there-abouts."
With feeling of anxiety and of aweness
I stood by the gate and saw them pass.

living in a state taylor goes to must be nice 😭 i’m in oregon and she hasn’t been here since 2013 due to our extreme lack of professional sports and stadiums with a capacity higher than 50k
Bestie I've got a whooooleee post I'm gonna be writing on this but!!!! It was actually a 3 hour drive for me for rep tour bc I lived in Vancouver, WA aka across the river from Portland, so basically Portland! I totally get you, I'm sad that she doesn't come to the Moda center anymore and now Ed doesn't either😭 They got too big. Which I'm beyond proud of! But yeah their shows became a lot less accessible. Maybe it's time to rally to get Oregon cities to build a dang stadium already. But yeah I mean this is what I was gonna post about but like part of the reason demand is so high (not to take ANY if the blame from Ticketmaster it's all 100% them) is because of situations like this where one show, Seattle, is the closest for 3-4 states and B.C. so that's a LOT of people gunning for one show. I'm used to having to do long drives so I've totally prepared for possibly having to drive to a California or other show and sleep in the car idk. I didn't get tix, yet- but yeah gosh I feel like both that states should invest more in stadiums obvs it draws tourist revenue (tho maybe Oregon is an oddity in that college football is so big that it brings in enough ppl for that to Corvallis and Eugene maybe that is partially why? Idk also maybe Portland has a bad rep now (hah) and it doesn't have any good enough teams for a stadium but still. They should put in a stadium I'm manifesting) but also stars choosing to bypass smaller arenas for only stadiums I wonder if it actually works out. I'm gonna post on that too.
But yeah I'm right there with you! If I manage to get tickets anywhere it's gonna require travel :/ And yeah that makes the cost of the tickets even higher especially with gas prices aafarsffsgsfsstgs
But anyways I love the PNW, Oregon is awesome so!!!!

Discover How Rapid Shelter Construction Can Help the Homeless
Tumblr media
Revolutionary Solution to Soaring Homelessness Crisis, Says Sprung Structures President
As homelessness continues to plague cities across North America, the urgent need for effective solutions is at the forefront of discussions during the National Alliance to End Homelessness convention. One company, Sprung Structures, the pioneering force behind tension-membrane shelters, is garnering attention with its innovative Sprung Navigation Center model, which has successfully transitioned over 10,000 Americans from homelessness to stable housing.
An Alternative Approach to Combat Homelessness
Highlighting the pressing issue, Phil Sprung, president of Sprung Structures, states, "Soaring homelessness is a top concern for cities across North America, and we can offer the fastest solution to reverse this growing crisis." Sprung Structures has developed high-performance, purpose-built shelters, which not only provide housing but also essential on-site social services, thus achieving the desired outcomes of the Housing First model in a fraction of the time typically required for traditional construction.
Swift and Superbly Equipped Structures
With superior climate control, abundant natural daylight, and spacious layouts that can accommodate a range of support services, Sprung facilities can be constructed in as little as eight weeks. These structures boast low construction costs and minimal foundation requirements, coupled with energy-efficient insulation packages that ensure a comfortable interior while reducing overall operating expenses.   A Holistic Approach to Support The Sprung Navigation Center model offers a mix of dormitory-style rooms and private units, addressing the diverse needs of homeless individuals. These centers provide critical resources such as addiction treatment, job retraining, and mental health services, helping to tackle the underlying causes of chronic homelessness. Research confirms that individuals with stable and secure housing have significantly higher success rates in addressing their homelessness issues, as evidenced by the Navigation Center model.
Proven Success and Expansion
Sprung's innovative structures have already made a significant impact in major urban centers, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and Phoenix. "Successfully used in these cities, these special structures provide people who are experiencing homelessness with temporary housing as they travel the path to self-sufficiency and a brighter, more secure future," says Sprung. To date, more than 10,000 individuals have successfully transitioned from homelessness to stable housing through these centers. Further details and examples of projects can be found on the company's website, sprung.com.   Phoenix Praises the Respiro Solution In Phoenix, Sprung Structures' custom 100-bed tensioned-fabric structure, aptly named Respiro (meaning "respite" in Spanish), continues to save lives beyond the scorching summers. Yassamin Ansari, a city councilwoman in Phoenix, applauds the efforts, stating, "I look forward to working with Sprung to continue providing humane, temporary housing solutions for our unsheltered residents."
About Sprung Structures
With a rich history dating back to 1887, Sprung Structures is a leading manufacturer of rapid-construction buildings used in various industries, including military bases, schools, hospitals, sports arenas, fabrication plants, warehouses, soundstages, and homeless shelters. The company's patented tension-membrane technology, the result of five generations of inventors in the Sprung family, combined with their aluminum-framed structures, offers advanced, sustainable, and high-performance buildings that can be designed in days and built in weeks, all at a significantly lower cost than traditional construction methods. Moreover, Sprung structures boast an indefinite life expectancy while maintaining portability, enabling them to be dismantled and reused at another site or for different purposes, ultimately adding value to investors' return on investment.
Elon Musk
The company gained further recognition when Elon Musk, the renowned disruptor of today's technology, enlisted Sprung Structures to help construct Tesla's 140,000 sq. ft. assembly-line factory in a remarkable three weeks, defying skeptical investors who doubted such an achievement was possible. As homelessness continues to affect countless lives, the rapid construction of tension-membrane shelters spearheaded by Sprung Structures proves to be a pivotal step toward ending this crisis. With their successful track record and commitment to innovation, Sprung Structures is paving the way for a brighter future for those experiencing homelessness across North America.   Sources: THX News & Sprung Structures.
