#Planting Grape Hyacinth Bulbs In Pots

Note
Hey! Just a PSA: if you do not plan to have grape hyacinths EVERYWHERE in your garden keep them contained like they are now. We've made the mistake of putting them in soil and they are impossible to get rid of now if you don't want to remove like half a meter of soil. They can and they will spread like wildfire, with tiny little bulbs you have to pick out one by one by hand just to have peace for ~ a month (I've tried it quite a few times to no avail). Yes they are super cute, but please do yourself a favour and keep them in pots 😅
Oh no, that's exactly what I want!!! I've yet to see anyone else do this but my brother loves experimenting with wine and to make a grape hyacinth wine he'd need a ton of them. But I think I'll find a nice place for them far far away from our gardens so they don't mess with our other things. There's a really big oak tree out in the woods in a little clearing and I may plant them near it (I'd also love to sell/give away the bulbs someday). But oh my gosh thank you so much for the information! I made that mistake with peppermint years ago and every once in awhile we see them popping up in our main garden and have to rip them out 😂 it's also overtaken my little herb box and mixed with everything else, so now I have orange chocolate spearmint basil thyme peppermint and it's a very, uh... interesting combination

Hyacinth bulbs may be forced into early growth for indoor display in the winter. Plant them with the tips just showing, in soil-based potting mix in containers with drainage holes.
Keep in a dark place at temperatures above freezing but no higher than 45°F (7°C), for at least 10 weeks to allow roots to develop.
When shoots are about 1 inch long, increase light and temperature gradually.
Water carefully, avoiding wetting the shoots or waterlogging the soil. Soil should be moist, not wet.
After flowering, forced hyacinths may be transplanted to the garden and they will flower again in subsequent years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CARING FOR HYACINTHS
After your hyacinths are finished flowering in late spring, cut back flower stalks, but allow the leaves to die back naturally. The plants need their foliage to gather energy for next year’s blooms.
Hyacinth bulbs do not like to have wet feet, so make sure they are not watered too often. Too much moisture can cause rot.
In the event of a dry autumn, water hyacinths occasionally.
Protect container-grown plants from excessive winter moisture by keeping them covered or moving them to a sheltered area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHAT TO DO WITH HYACINTHS AFTER FLOWERING
Outdoors
After your hyacinths have finished flowering, snip off the flower stalks, but don’t remove the foliage. The bulbs need their leaves to gather energy for next year’s blooms. At the end of the spring season, the foliage will die back naturally, at which point it can be removed.
Hyacinth bulbs can remain in the ground throughout the year in most planting zones. If your winter temperatures do not get below 60°F (16°C), bulbs should be dug up in the fall and refrigerated in a cool, dry area for six to eight weeks. Hyacinths require a period of colder weather to bloom.
Indoors
Hyacinth bulbs that have finished flowering indoors can be transplanted to the garden. After flowering, they need time to gather energy for next year’s blooms, so they should not be placed directly into storage.
After their foliage dies back outdoors, hyacinth bulbs can be brought indoors and stored in a cool, dark, dry place until the fall or winter.
RECOMMENDED VARIETIES
Hyacinthus orientalis ‘Miss Saigon’ has tightly-packed blossoms with deep purple-pink florets.
Tumblr media
Muscari armeniacum (grape hyacinth) has small and delicate cobalt-blue flowers which look gorgeous when planted en masse.

Back to Work!
“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” F. Scott Fitzgerald
P.G.E. has informed the community that the power may be shut off for 48 hours at a time due to high gusty winds and dry conditions. Obviously, this doesn’t make me happy because if there is no electricity, there is no internet connection on my computer. Without an internet connection, I can’t submit my articles and photographs to the newspaper. I’m not one to use my cell phone for my writing or photography assignments, thus, this announcement means that I have to stop my autumnal garden clean-up to write and publish.
The silver lining is that you, my dear readers, will get a jumpstart on your fall chores. Yes, it is time to get back to work in your yard.
The next 30 days are the optimal time to get your landscape prepared for the winter sleep and the spring awakening. Before the rains come, harvest your grapes, take away the trash, tidy up the vegetable patch, clear away the dead stems. Over-wintering pests and diseases will take refuge in the hideouts of debris left in the garden. Corn stalks must be cut (use them for Halloween decorations). Pick the ripe apples, figs, and Asian pears. Leaves from deciduous and evergreen trees may be raked into the compost pile. Or, if you have space, stack leaves separately to create a rich leaf mold that can be used next season as a valuable ingredient in your potting soil.
Most garden projects are best begun in autumn when the soil is still warm with cooler evenings. Create new paths, add a rock garden, terrace a hillside, plant a fern grotto, sow a new lawn. If you have a greenhouse, start bringing frost tender potted plants into the structure. If you don’t have a greenhouse, identify plants that need protection and if they are in containers, move them closer to the house, preferably under an awning. For plants growing in your garden that will be susceptible to winters chill, wrap them in burlap. I am currently covering my bougainvillea and blue flowering Birds of Paradise.
With the change of seasons, our houseplants require a bit of TLC. For all of the smaller, moveable plants, bring them outdoors for a final refreshing shower to remove built-up dust. Give them a deep drink on a warm, but not a hot day, and let them dry in the shade before returning them to the house. For large plants such as fiddle leaf fig or philodendron, take a damp cloth and wipe each leaf, top and bottom, as well as the stems. With shorter days, less intense light, and a different indoor atmosphere, our houseplants may suffer. Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist without being soggy. If you want your Christmas cactus to bloom for the holidays, keep it in a cool room without watering so that it can rest.
Red flag days will be more common through November as winds kick up and the heat of fall keeps the thermometers rising. If you pruned your begonias and roses in the last few weeks, you’ll enjoy bountiful flowers until the downpours begin. I am truly enamored with begonias, both the tuberous and the wax leaf or fibrous. In some areas, the wax leaf begonia is an annual but in our warmer Mediterranean climate, they are perennial like their sisters, the tuberous begonias. Don’t make the mistake of pulling them out when they die back. Just cut them to the ground to allow them to overwinter and you’ll be rewarded with even a fuller plant next blooming season.
Cynthia Brian’s “Back to Work” Gardening Guide for October
The chores already discussed need doing before inclement weather begins. Once we have a deep soaking of life-giving rain, October is one of the best months for planting, seeding, and digging.
⎫ CREATE meandering borders filled with perennials and shrubs. ⎫ PLANT trees and bushes as the temperature cools. ⎫ SCATTER wildflower seeds, especially California poppies and lupines. ⎫ START a new lawn or re-seed an existing lawn. ⎫ DEADHEAD annuals. ⎫ ROOT out any remaining weeds. ⎫ DIG a pond and add a water feature. ⎫ CHOOSE fall planting bulbs that will have different bloom times from early to late spring. Don’t forget muscari (grape hyacinth). This fragrant bulb will multiply, growing in sun or shade. ⎫ REFRIGERATE hyacinth, crocus, and tulip for six weeks before planting. ⎫ SOW cool-season vegetables including turnips, peas, lettuce, rutabagas, kohlrabi, carrots, kale, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. ⎫ ADD a tropical ambiance with New Guinea impatiens, red-hot poker, and palms. ⎫ PROVIDE long-lasting beauty for sunny areas with ornamental grasses, geraniums, and elephant ear. ⎫ FIX nitrogen and increase biomass with a cover crop such as mustard, alfalfa, or crimson clover. ⎫ ENJOY your begonias. Once they start dying back, do not pull them out. They will return more robust next fall. ⎫ TAKE pleasure in photos of beautiful gardens, such as those from Butchart Gardens in Canada. See https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1316/Cynthia-Brians-Gardening-Guide-for-October-Benvenuto-to-Butchart-Gardens.html

OUT NOW: MEYER LEMONS AND SASANQUA CAMELLIA ‘EARLY PEARLY’
We are coming to the close of autumn. The two oak trees still have many golden yellow and green leaves to shed. We have big white bags of dry leaves lining the studio verandah and they will soon be mulched and put on the garden. Decent rain is coming in a day. The white camellias we planted last year along the driveway are starting to flower. It was quite a battle keeping the bushes alive over the hot dry summer. After flowering, new foliage should take off, aided by some fertiliser, and hopefully next year, there will be a more prolific flowering. The petals of the flowers are thick and waxy. Our Meyer lemon tree outside the kitchen window is laden with young yellow fruit that are too bitter to harvest just yet. The English parsley is starting to flourish in time for soups and parsley sauce. Our grass has at last turned green again, thank goodness, as that swathe unites the whole garden again, and on a beautiful mild sunny day, with white clouds billowing above, and the half tame thrush singing her heart out to gain my attention, makes one feel glad to be alive. I have recently dug up some double pink hellebores and put them in terra cotta pots to see how they flower with a little more attention from me. Potted sweet pea seedlings are coming through and the tulip bulbs lie beneath their covering of potting soil. Pots of grape hyacinths and daffodils are all serried together on the potting table to receive their daily dose of sun. The daphne bushes in the side garden are budding and will start to flower around the first of July, not so far away. Today I cut the old yellowed foliage off the sedums as the new rosettes are breaking through the soil. I am ready for winter.

Spring in all its glory has come to Dalston Curve Garden in recent weeks, with fresh leaves unfurling, the delicate beauty of Wild Cherry blossom and new drifts of Spring-flowering bulbs emerging every day. We have been very lucky to have photographers Sandra Keating and Alex Bogdan here to record this beautiful botanical moment in time.
Spring-flowering bulbs make the most of the light beneath the bare stems of deciduous trees before the ground beneath them is shaded out by their new leaves and in recent years we have planted more and more of these plants in our ‘woodland’ style beds. We love dainty Erythronium ‘Pagoda’ which produces little nodding, star-like flowers with sulphur-yellow petals. Their nearby companion Pulmonaria has blue flowers and interesting spotty leaves and is welcomed on warm March and April days by bees searching for nectar.
Everyone at the Curve Garden loves tulips and we plant hundreds more every Autumn!  We don’t plant ours in the ground, as they never look quite right here, but instead we create a glorious display of pots and containers. We’ll be sharing photos of this year’s April display next week, but for now we are shining light on one little early flowering variety. Tulip ‘Turkestanica’ is named, not surprisingly after Turkey, its place of origin. It flowers in March, way ahead of most of our other varieties and is a beautiful wild-looking species, with up to twelve star-shaped flowers.
Visitors to the Curve Garden often ask ‘What Is that blue plant that looks like Bluebells’? The answer is Muscari latifolium (Grape Hyacinth) which we plant in drifts among all the yellow Narcissi (Daffodils) and best of all, the bees love them!
We are in love with Leucojum aestivum the wonderfully but rather confusingly named ‘Summer Snowflake’ which flowers in Spring!  A member of the Daffodil family, it has dainty white bells with green ‘dots’. We grow the variety ‘Gravetye Giant’ and this year we planted it in locations all over the garden.
Spring really is all about Daffodils or Narcissi and we grow about seven varieties here, some directly in the soil and others in pots and tins, aiming to get successional flowering from February to late April. Our favourites include dainty little ‘Hawera’ which we’ve combined with Summer Snowflakes under trees, the delicately scented ‘Pipit’ and for the first time this year ‘Thalia’ which has a long flowering period and is great for vases.
Thanks to Gardener Emma Rey and to all of our volunteers for their hard work from September to December last year planting all of these beautiful bulbs! And we are also grateful to volunteer Eco Zhang for her lovely hand-painted signs identifying our plants that are of special interest now.
The Garden is open from 11am every day over the Easter weekend and til 10pm Friday - Sunday so why not come in and enjoy the botanical abundance?

Best Flower Plant For Spring
Tumblr media
After a long, dim winter with a lot of grays and tans, you're prepared for some spring tone! Regardless of whether you live in the frigid North or the bright South or anyplace in the middle, spring implies a restoration of your nursery. Blossoming plants are exactly what your colder time of year exhausted soul needs this season. In case you're establishing a perpetual, which returns for a long time, or bush, ensure it's fit to your USDA Hardiness Zone (track down yours here) so it can endure winters in your space. Spring-sprouting bulbs should be planted in fall before the ground freezes (that is pretty much as late as early December in certain pieces of the country). A few annuals can take an ice, yet for those that aren't as extreme, you'll need to establish them after the last expected ice date in your space; your nearby college coop augmentation administration can exhort you concerning that assessed date in your piece of the country.
Top 10 Best Flower Plant For Spring

They'd look wonderful in a front nursery encompassing an entrance or patio.
2.Crocus
These solid bulbs frequently will spring up when snow is as yet on the ground in stormy environments. Crocuses should be planted in the fall for a spring show—and don't be astonished on the off chance that you discover them where you didn't establish them—like under a bush! They're scrumptious to rodents so they frequently uncover them and cover them somewhere else.
3. Daffodil

Fall Harvest and Bulb Buying
“Tickle it with a hoe and it will laugh into a harvest.”  English Saying
Every September I think about two major garden projects that transpire throughout the autumn season: harvesting and bulb buying.
Fall boasts a spectacular bounty of pears, Asian pears, grapes, apples, tomatoes, tangerines, blackberries, walnuts, kiwis, and more. The last of the peaches and nectarines are being picked while festivals celebrating the end of the fruit and vegetable collections transpire throughout the next two months across the United States.
We also kick off fall by thinking about what bulbs we’ll want to plant for spring. Alliums, daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinths, iris, snowdrops, muscari, and fritillaria top the lists of many gardeners.
Let’s get started on this month’s workload!
 Fruit and Vegetables
What do we do with all the produce that is harvested? Besides eating your fruits and veggies fresh and raw, autumn is a plum time for canning, freezing, pickling, and drying the season’s extra yield to enjoy during the winter months when “fresh-picked” is not possible. Use a dehydrator to dry apples, peaches, tomatoes, and pears. Put grapes into an ice-cube tray, add water, and make grape cubes that are pretty and delicious in drinks. After cooling, freeze batches of various fruit sauces that have simmered in a pot with a dash of salt, sugar, honey, and/or vinegar. For canning and pickling, check online sources for simple recipes and make sure to follow the safety requirements. Making jams, jellies, pies, and chutneys is easy and fun, especially when you involve the kids. Next to Christmas, harvest time was always a favorite family experience when I was growing up.
Although my vegetable garden did not return the abundance I had anticipated for the year, my fruit trees overcompensated. I’ve been slicing crunchy apples into salads, sauces, compotes, soups, and making crumbles, pies, and crisps. Peaches or nectarines with fresh cream is one of my favorite breakfast treats. For a refreshing and invigorating weekend cocktail that I call Sunday Sensation, try this beautiful and delicious combination. It can be made with or without alcohol.
 Sunday Sensation
In a clear pitcher, muddle cut pieces of peach and nectarine. Add slices of an orange, tangerine, and Meyer lemon. Stir in a shot glass of Campari or Aperol for an alcohol infused drink, add ice cubes, and top with sparkling wine or Champagne. For a virgin sensation, use a cup of orange juice topped with sparkling water or apple cider. Garnish with sprigs of basil and mint leaves.
Yummy!
While you are enjoying your Sunday Sensation, it’s time to contemplate the bulbs and rhizomes you’ll plant this fall for a spring showcase. Bulbs can be planted mid to late fall in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Daffodils can be planted anytime and anywhere. They are especially great in areas where deer roam as the deer are repelled by them. There are so many varieties of tulips for early, mid-season, and late blooming that it may be best to peruse bulb catalogs to get an idea of the specimens that speak to you. All tulips will need six weeks of refrigeration before planting so it is doubly critical that you decide on what to buy now. For rock gardens and borders, you may be thrilled by Water Lily tulips that naturalize when left undisturbed. When you want exotic-looking tulips, consider the flamboyant Parrot or Peony flowering tulips. If you want to force flowering, single or double early tulips are the most well-known as well as Species and Triumph tulips.
 Forcing How-to:
Plant bulbs in well-draining pots in October, place them in the dark for 12-14 weeks while chilling at 35-45 degrees Fahrenheit. Gradually move pots to filtered sunlight to allow sprouting and acclimation. Water as needed.
 Ponder the Pollinators:
Happy bees stay in our gardens helping nature thrive. By planting bulbs in colors most attractive to the bees––blue, purple, white, and yellow––fresh food is provided for them after winter when they need it most. The best bulbs for bees are allium, anemone, camassia, corydalis, crocus, fritillaria, Galanthus, hyacinths, muscari, tulips, and scilla.
Best Way to Plant Large Quantities:
Most people plant bulbs in groups of five to seven spaced six inches apart and buried four to five inches deep. However, if you want to create a bold and beautiful impact with large swatches of color, try trenching. You can mix bulbs or use one variety or one species.
Dig a long five-inch deep (or whatever depth the bulb packaging indicates) trench wherever you want to make your floral statement. It can be straight or made into a circle or pattern. Add soil amendments if your ground is clay and hard. Arrange a minimum of a hundred bulbs with the pointy side up. Cover area with soil and mulch. Water, wait, and WOW!
After blooms fade in the spring, cut the flower stalks to allow the bulbs to conserve energy for the next year while the foliage continues to flourish.
 Hose Repair:
Every time I or my siblings telephoned my Mom during a summer or fall day, the first words out of her mouth were “I’m busy. I’m pulling hoses.”  That line became a code sentence for us whenever we were doing manual labor that others may not think was important, but what was critical to us. This past summer, to save water by not turning on my irrigation system, I found myself pulling actual hoses daily. By spot watering, I was able to water deeply and accurately, but it was arduous work pulling those heavy hoses. Several tore or broke during the process and I mended them, giving them new life. I have always repaired frayed or cut hoses and figured everyone repaired theirs when necessary. But then I saw a couple of hoses in the recycle bin area of a client’s yard with new hoses sitting next to the front faucets. They didn’t realize that hoses are easily repaired with inexpensive parts. If your hose is damaged, head to the hardware store to buy either a female or male coupling. If your hose is broken in the middle, you can buy a connector. Cut off the damaged hose part with a shear or sharp knife. Use a Philipps screwdriver to open the connector. Push the new female or male plug into the hose and tighten the connector with the screwdriver. Test the hose. It will be good as new. I tend to use more female couplings than males, so I always buy extras.
Tickle your garden with a hoe and you’ll have a great harvest. Come visit me at the Pear and Wine Festival in Moraga at the Be the Star You Are!® charity booth on September 25th and pick up some free goodies. Laugh on!

Plant Bulbs in the Fall to Brighten Up your Spring Landscape
Written by Felder Rushing and published on https://www.hgtv.com/.
Who doesn’t love spring? For New Englanders, the icy cold dullness of winter is on the way out, the sun is getting brighter and warmer, and nature’s renewal is in the air. But wait just a minute…there’s just one problem. That early seasonal transition from winter to the vibrant spring growing season is just plain, gray-brown dull.
From the end of March to as late as early May, nature’s busy generating new growth, it’s just not very colorful, and that makes for dull gardens. It’s enough to drive many gardeners to the brink of despair, desperate for more colorful signs of life. Fortunately, there’s a secret weapon to combat all this dullness: bulbs.
Bulbs are perhaps one of the most valuable and productive friends an ornamental gardener can have. Cared for properly, they seem to automatically provide life and color in a bleak landscape after a hard winter. They are springtime incarnate, bringing joy with every vibrant flower!
When you add bulbs, you are using plants that are ephemeral. That means they’re plants that are transitory, with a short life cycle, and they’re going to show off during their favorable period and fade away when it’s not so favorable. Bulbs are an astonishingly large category of flowers, so it’s important to know what you have so you’ll know how to care for it. Two of the most popular bulbs are tulips and narcissi (daffodils are a type of narcissi), but there are many others, such as hyacinths, camassia, scilla, crocus, lily, and fritillaria, to name a few.
Planting Spring Bulbs in Fall
Whether you want masses of spring color or collect a few heirloom bulbs to share, all are easily planted in the fall.

What you plant are compact packages of hope…what you get are plants that bloom their hearts out for you – literally! Spring bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, and so many more – even garlic – are best set out in the fall, just as the weather and soil starts to cool. Within weeks they will have sprouted roots reaching deep into the soil, followed by spears of greenery that withstands even the coldest weather, then late winter and spring stems topped with nodding flowers.  But there are a few things you can do to make this easier and more productive, starting with choosing the right bulbs for your area. After all, many bulbs require cold temperatures to sprout and grow well, making some unsuitable for hot frost-free climates without some pre-chilling in the refrigerator crisper. Usually six or eight weeks is enough to satisfy their need for cold. Note: In moderate climates where winters get cold for at least a few weeks, only tulips need pre-chilling; in fact, daffodils that are refrigerated before planting often flower on short, stunted stems. And be careful to label bulbs left in fridges where some people may mistake them for food! Another precaution you may want to take is to protect your bulbs from voles, which are small rodents that eat bulbs. Horticulturists in many botanic gardens line their planting beds with half-inch “hardware cloth” which allows roots to grow but fences out the voles. You can substitute large plastic pots sunk into the ground if you wish (this works for hostas and other tender perennials, too). Also, bulbs need a little help with nutrients. While any all-purpose fertilizer will work, a light dusting of specially-formulated bulb food can yield research-backed benefits. Keep in mind that one-shot bulbs like tulips really don’t need as much fertilizer as longer-lived bulbs that will grow and return for years. Dig soil at least six or eight inches deep, loosening hard pans beneath, and mix a small amount of compost or other organic matter into hard clay or sandy soils. Add fertilizers at this time as well. If you aren’t going to plant the same day, cover the planting area with bark or other mulch to keep soil temperatures moderate in the winter and to protect against packing rain. My great-grandmother shared some of her heirloom bulbs which I simply fertilize every fall, and divide as needed to keep them from getting crowded. In the late summer I dig them, let them dry a few days, then separate and replant what I don’t share with friends and family. It is easy to create a wonderful potful of mixed bulbs by layering them – large bulbs deeper, smaller bulbs shallow. The general rule of thumb, plant twice as deep as the bulbs are in diameter, is not strict, but a good guideline. Main thing is to mix and match good bulbs for your area, pre-chill tulips and any bulbs being planted in frost-free areas, then plant in well-drained, lightly fertilize soil… and enjoy the results!
