Some Rescue Team Overgrow doodles in Omega Ruby. Kiptide gets his first taste of gym battling, lots of berry harvesting, minigames that look like a weird dream, Kinetik finds they're slightly tech-unfriendly, rescue work continues, new friends are made.
...this game works very hard to make rocks look cool. ...They do a good job.

Edit: Additional fact - while I was working on it this PMD remix came on and gut punched me in the feels.

We got a magnet item from the Trick House. Imagine if Kinetik could switch out their magnets, we could go Clawitzer style on our opponents.

A doodly collection of all currently established Overgrow members.
Faye, Kiptide, Wingit / Aerilee, Zudo, Liza, Kinetik / Calamity, Phoebe, Wyatt
Kinda wondering if Liza the Castform can go back to the weather institute now that her mission is technically done..? Might be fun to train another character for a bit...

PMD:Omega Ruby part 22: LEAGUE sequel
Unwilling to accept defeat, Team Overgrow jumped right back into the League Challenge with minimal re-strategising. With the benefit of prior experience and a few levels gained on the last try, they made it to the Champion in no time.
This time round, the team received only one KO (Wingit), and watched in amazement as Kinetik took down Mega Metagross in two Discharges.
Victory~!
I’ve really got to acknowledge the affection mechanic, it really helped. But my team are so cool and tough.
...
To be honest, it’s been fun battling and appreciating my PMD team in a human-world context. But it felt quite out of character to battle the League, even with reasoning. I don’t think Faye would ever quite be comfortable with battling as a trainer. She might not have even if she’d never been a Poke’mon herself - I just don’t think the career fits her very well.
If this were a story I genuinely tied in to Overgrow’s canon, I might prefer to bypass the gym challenge altogether. Have them explore and sightsee together, include secret bases and interactions with rangers, have some rescue battles alongside Brendan against Team Magma, dive and discover the Infinity Energy info in Magma’s base and the sunken ship. Maybe keep the Groudon plot? Not sure (I still think the Gym challenge would make sense in the Groudon context).
But the Delta Episode...
That’s the part of this whole thing I reeeeallly wanted to get into. The whole reason I did this playthrough.
Here’s hoping the story works out the way I intended.

PMD:Omega Ruby part 21 - THE LEAGUE
Faye and the team, after long preparation and indulging Wyatt’s long search for The Perfect Move, as well as lots of recovery time after The Groudon Incident, decide to take on the Elite Four.
They have one main reason for doing this as a rescue team: to rebuff any challenges to their right to keep custody of, and tame, Groudon, an extremely dangerous Poke’mon - rather than killing them, imprisoning them forever, or handing them off to someone else.
They could also just want to find Steven and talk to him about Infinity Energy, a classified topic and possibly the key to getting home (in which case I’d have to exclude the Lati@s from dimensional travel, which was also an idea). The guy’s hard to pin down as it is, but as the Champion, he has to show up! and also maybe let you in on some stuff if you win?
Lastly, they could want to prove themselves as a team of - collectively - unevolved, imperfectly-applied-natures, low stat Poke’mon: could be they got talked down to a fair bit by upper level trainers. PMD Poke’mon know for a fact that unevolved species can do amazing things - maybe they want to show the trainers of Hoenn that as well, along with their unique fighting style.
Ok, so here’s what happened!
Sidney - Wingit was meant to fight, but she got confused by Mightyena right away. She baton passed her speed to Phoebe, who proceeded to Moonblast-sweep the whole team. The only one who lasted two turns against her is Cacturne, who shielded on its first turn. Sidney is just like, what just happened, is that an ODDISH?
Phoebe (ghost elite) - Wyatt fought Dusclops with Foul Play. She did pretty good but got cursed. (Dyou think Ninetales’ Curse is like the ghost one? It does drain away your health if you don’t go back in your pokeball... and Gengar-human wasn’t there to recall her).
Kinetik, Phoebe and Kiptide all fought. Kiptide’s super training paid off, he endured some tough moves! I can imagine Liza the Castform cheering from the sidelines with Faye, as the only Poke’mon teammate who prefers to opt out of fighting. Wingit, if she was out, would be the one who notices the ghost girl in the room (I couldn’t spot her for myself, so I hope that’s actually real)
The team starts to get confident.
Glacia - the first actual challenge for the team. Kiptide gets badly body slammed by Walrein, and Wyatt gets frozen by Glalie after taking out two Froslass. Faye manages to plead Liza into using a single flamethrower to win the battle.
Drake - Kiptide takes a lot of damage from Altaria, and faints after winning with Ice Beam. Liza’s still last resort... so. Wyatt stepped in. She put Flygon to sleep and then started off an Echoed Voice chain... and kept going.. and going... Salamence was the only one that stood a chance, as Wyatt dodged all attacks except its Dragon Rush. Badly hurt, Wyatt used her super amped up voice to utterly destroy it and Kingdra for the win.
Steven - The team fought SO HARD. Everyone pitched in, but for every foe we beat, Steven matched us with a KO. Wyatt was the last one standing - her Foul Play was my strategy to deal with Metagross. She first had to beat Armaldo, putting it to sleep and then Foul Play-ing. Finally it was her against Metagross... She put it to sleep and prepared to attack...
It woke up immediately and meteor mashed her into the ground.
....
So!
That was exciting! Faye takes her team back to the Poke’center and Steven has to sit down and like. calm down from a close call, haha.
Overgrow did so good! Now I have to decide what changes, if any, to make before we try again. Will Phoebe evolve, or try again as she is? Will Liza come back in with us, or swap out for a new team member?
I don’t know that those changes are necessary. We came SO CLOSE...
I’ll think on it.

PMD:Omega Ruby part something
Finally back to Overgrow’s Hoenn adventures for a bit. Poor Kiptide is having a tough time in training in the battle restaurant thing... maybe it’s not the best place for him to fight? (Poke’mon themed food would cheer him up though!)

PMD: Omega Ruby part 18
Groudon confrontation!
Overgrow meet with Steven and Wallace - Kiptide was absolutely waiting to see a water gym leader, noooot that it was the time to get into that.
I laughed when they said the magma suit might not hold up near Groudon - exactly what Faye needs to hear with all the lava in her near future. You don't exactly need grass-type instincts to not like that idea.
Brendan declares that Faye is his best friend - which - on the one hand that’s a nice thing to -oops- retrospectively develop, though when I first played ASaph I thought ‘he needs to raise his standards of best-friendship’.
Faye walks into the cave of Origin- I'd imagine that since the place is full of Mawile and Golbat etc, and nobody's allowed in, the Poke'mon here have developed a very separate culture.
Primal Groudon - no healing - aim to capture
I'd kind of like to think all the team fought at once, although in reality Groudon's wide-reaching attacks would make that a veeery short encounter. Fun to draw, though?
What happened was, a probably-shaking Wyatt was up first. She tried to bide her time with Protect to sketch Groudon's signature attack, but ultimately failed and was OHKO'd.
Liza was next, confidently going sunny-form...this was a terrible idea because, well. Earthquake. Liza still hung on to her last scrap of HP -twice - and kept at it with weather balls and hurricanes (and ultra balls) as Groudon Rest-ed multiple times. She did, however, eventually fall.
Kiptide was next, ready to save the world! - he got 1HKO'd.
With Magnet Rise, Kinetik evaded several deadly earthquakes and Precipice Blades. Sturdy saved them once against Lava Plume, and they endured once on their own as well before fainting.
With only a grass and bug type left, things were looking pretty bad.
Chlorophyll made Phoebe faster than Groudon - something Wyatt, our second-fastest, didn't manage - and.
Clinging tenaciously to 1HP, she brought Primal Groudon into the red so fast I thought she'd killed it for a second.
And then we caught it.
I think this Oddish deserves some kind of legendary status.
Wingit narrowly avoided having to fight. I'd like to think that with Dig, she was Overgrow's emergency getaway, and potentially aided Faye in throwing ultra balls. With said Ninjask out of the fight, I can happily say this was a zero-evolved-Poke'mon battle. Also, we probably would have won a lot quicker if we’d been aiming for a KO, but that’s a given.
I imagine the exit was accompanied by a dash to the Poke'mon Center because Blue Orb or not, there's going to be some injuries. The aftermath would be a real break and recovery period.
And uh. Maybe some attempts at groudon taming.
In that spirit, I fed it all our food.

PMD: Omega Ruby part 17
Current status: I’m probably going to try and catch Groudon. We have a master ball, but.... ugh. That’s not even slightly good story. Right? Besides, I wanna know if we can survive against it! So, I finally bought some Ultra Balls, and I’m working on bonding with my team through Amie so they can endure and dodge as well as possible. We’re gonna win through the power of friendship! Only like. for actual real.
Ok, so now for (spoiler!) story notes:
Ok so we chase Maxie’s stolen sub to the depths of the ocean. There we find... rocks. Cue a quick regroup at the daycare center, populated by Zudo and Aerilee who can be relied upon not to have any eggs waiting for us thank you very much.
Turns out Zudo can’t in fact learn Strength, so Kiptide takes that one and Zudo relearns Rock Smash (which? he forgot at daycare despite HM status? Along with Cut?).
Wyatt stays behind for Zudo to come along. Overgrow reaches the cavern.
Groudon is there.
So is Maxie, with Overgrow’s very first mega-evolved opponent. Oh no, what is this strange power they’ve heard of in rumour and legend? Maxie’s greatest weapon, better get ready...!
Kiptide OHKO’s it immediately.
Honestly, Maxie’s deranged facial expressions are more alarming than his team.
Also, it seems Maxie’s land obsession is combined here with a whole ‘humans at the expense of Poke’mon’ or ‘humans and Poke’mon can’t coexist’ thing which feels like it steps on some other villains’ toes along with Archie’s more Poke’mon-friendly version in ASaph. It felt a bit belated, but sure ok, Overgrow can easily stand as the foil to that philosophy.
Also Mega Camerupt used Yawn so presumably Kiptide’s asleep for Groudon waking and the whole ‘wow we’re all going to die’ thing. Nice job paying attention, buddy.

PMD:Omega Ruby part 14
The areas before and after Fortree are so good. Great atmosphere, weather, just out in the wilderness with Tropius and bird keepers and rangers and little ninja kids disguised as trees and secret bases everywhere… Overgrow would spend a lot of time here.
Castform! Oh man. The last time I used one, it was in my first GBA Ruby playthrough - I wasn't even nicknaming back then. It's an unexpected feeling but seeing  its weather forms in 3D on my side is particularly special. ….but now half my team are like. Spheres with faces. And minimal limbs. Why did I do this.
Liza (lax, mischievous) is a great addition to a team concerned about weather disasters. She lived with some quirky people at the weather institute (i.e. guy who wore a rocky helmet and claims to have taken a slap ‘on purpose’), so she could be interested in some petty revenge for the way Magma's admin treated them.
Phoebe is such a warrior - she beat Winona's Altaria all by herself with Toxic and Dazzling Gleam oh my god what is this Oddish. We got lucky it didn't use Aerial Ace. Also we took on my nemesis, the Milotic trainer, and she destroyed it. Not to mention that admin’s Camerupt. And that Gyrados one time. She's so tough and good. I need to figure her character out a bit more, but she’s definitely motivated to battle and backs down to no one. The rest of the team is kind of in awe.
And then we get to Lilycove and fight Brendan. Yeah, that’s when Kiptide beat Brendan’s Sceptile with zero help or healing. I’m not getting over that - a win’s a win, even if neither of us used a super effective move. 'Boy, that stings a bit…" YOU BET IT DOES.
I found the memory girl outside the Poke’mon Center - the one who describes things your Poke’mon have experienced. Figured I’d try and apply them.
Kinetik's name makes them feel nostalgic - heh, fair.
Kiptide got teary eyed at a mired road? ....I can’t remember where that might be.The road where we met Phoebe?
Wingit got sleepy when I used the dowsing rod - that's… also fair. She takes a lot of rests apparently (perching on Faye’s bag), so she’d no doubt take a snooze while the team went itemfinding. For such a high speed Poke’mon, she appreciates her downtime.
Liza remembers being overwhelmed with emotion because of the item she left the weather institute with (icy rock)… perhaps she misses home, or it inspires her to keep fighting when normally she’s lax about things.
Wyatt almost got lost exploring a forest and got emotional… well, she did meet Kinetik while lost and running away in a forest. Wandering off in Hoenn might bring back those memories.
Phoebe fondly remembers hatching an egg. Teal the Wynaut, no doubt!

PMD:Omega Ruby part 13
Hidden Power! Here we go!
Kiptide the Mudkip-Ground. Aw.
Kinetik the Magnemite-Bug
Wyatt the Smeargle-...does not have one, the lady says! Not even hypothetically!
Wingit the Ninjask-Ice
Phoebe the Oddish- Ice
Liza the Castform-Rock
Others because why not
Ruben the Latios-Bug
Aerilee the Taillow-Psychic
Zudo the Zigzagoon- he’s way back at the daycare so not today
I’d like each character’s Hidden Power to say something about them. But I dunno.
Also we got a Swampertite. I guess Kiptide gets a pretty souvenir, huh?
