At the point in this snippet, they’ve found themselves in a lingering embrace that has Phryne feeling her feelings and waxing nostalgic about she and Jack’s journey. So, of course, angst is present. Perhaps what he didn’t know then was that he frightened her, too. Not at first, but every time he retreated from her advances, it stirred something inside her that felt less and less like frustration and rejection; more and more like admiration and trust.

Trust was something she scarcely allowed herself to give, most notably to men.

Plenty of men laughed with her, flirted with her, campaigned for her time, and she enjoyed the company of many in her bed - but it was always with the understanding it was transactional. Behind every man’s charm pointed in her direction was a thought of what they could get from her. Which was fine by her, as she usually wanted the same thing. It was a deliberate choice on her part - single use frivolity was just enough to scratch an itch, but it was also an effective defense. No attachments meant less danger; less risk for feelings of ownership that, she knew from experience, could quickly morph into imprisonment.

But Jack… dear Jack. He was everything she never knew. He laughed with her just to laugh with her. He comforted her through losses and scares. He treated her as an equal in their cases, despite everyone around him insisting he shouldn’t. He spent evenings sipping whisky and playing checkers in her parlor simply because he enjoyed her company. His presence came with undeniable warmth, even when he attempted to be cold. There was never a pretense; he wanted nothing but to be beside her, and never expected nor felt entitled to her time - always the first to say goodnight, careful not to overstay his welcome (though he was welcome, always). And all he ever asked was that she be careful with herself.

She felt him start to pull away and her arms instinctively tightened around him, almost frantically. She hadn’t realized until then how loathe she was to let go.

“Phryne… ?” he murmured, confusion laced with concern in his voice.

Her eyes squeezed shut in hesitation, but she didn’t budge. She probably couldn’t have even if she wanted to. And she very much didn’t.

Oh, but she did feel silly, clinging to him like this, all but demanding to be held like a small child. Nonetheless, she kept her face tucked into his chest, unmoving, and let the words fall from her lips in the smallest of voices, “Could you just stay like this for a bit? … With me?”

She felt him stiffen slightly and her heart started hammering in chest as she wondered if it had been too presumptuous to ask. But not a second later, his arms tightened around her, pulling her close against him with a sort of breathtaking conviction and any worry she might’ve had vanished. “Of course,” he whispered into her hair and she exhaled a grateful sigh into his chest, “Yes, I’ll stay.”

As for how far I've planned the story? It's more so that I plan snippets of it rather than anything else. For example, I'll suddenly get an idea out of nowhere about an interaction I want to happen in Season 4 and then I write it down. It's what motivates me to keep going with this series.

Although, I do have a basic outline, and I have things like character development down too. I only tend to plan things when I'm really excited, which is how I feel about Stranger Things in general so yeah.
