New zones, customization options, and Emerald Powers: a recap of the Sonic Superstars cover story
Tumblr media
Issue 358 of the Gameinformer magazine was published this Tuesday, and its 12-page column on the upcoming Sonic Superstars revealed a new look into its development, and previewed a number of in-game features and zones.
Here's everything you need to know.
Major takeaways
New zone names: Sky Temple, Pinball Carnival, Lagoon City, Sand Sanctuary, Press Factory, and unannounced Golden Capital.
New Emerald Powers: Avatar, Bullet, Water, Ivy, Vision, Slow, Extra, Super.
Expect vast character customization options in the brand new Items shop.
Select stages in a Generations-style World Map.
New zones
Characters have the choice of going through a normal act or a character-specific act. For example, finishing Act 1 of Speed Jungle Zone as Sonic allows you to choose between either playing the second act of Speed Jungle or an "Act Sonic," an alternate act of Speed Jungle where you zoom as Sonic, running away from a terrorizing Fang the Sniper.
There is reportedly a World Map similar to Generations where you run in a 2D-plane to select a stage.
There is also an items shop where you can trade medals in for customizable parts. Apparent, you can customize your "head, body, arms, legs, accessories color, and something called prototype."
Tumblr media
The third zone of the game is reportedly called Sky Temple Zone.
In the zone, there is a mini-game similar to the game "Breakout," where you turn into a ball and aim to break bricks.
The climax or the ending of the zone is a massive storm.
The fourth zone is called Pinball Carnival Zone.
As the name suggests, "a giant pinball arena and fast sequences with fireworks setting off."
Tumblr media
The fifth zone is called Lagoon City, which is filled with submerged city ruins and water slides.
Act 1 is mostly above water whereas Act 2 has several underwater sequences.
Amy's character-specific act of Lagoon City is fruit-based, with several gimmicks like a fruit based robots and such.
Tumblr media
Sand Sanctuary Zone is the sixth zone of Sonic Superstars and a seventh zone reportedly called Press Factory Zone.
Filenames in the newly released screenshots also disclosed the officially unannounced Golden Capital Zone.
Emerald Powers
Tumblr media
Emerald Powers were inspired by the Wisps mechanic from Sonic Colors.
Every stage has a giant gold ring and a giant blue ring. Completing the giant gold rings rewards you a Chaos Emerald and the the blue ring rewards you a medal.
Both special stages have the same central gameplay mechanic: swing from floating bubbles toward the moving objective.
Emerald Powers can be used by using the right stick and operate on a cooldown, with each star post checkpoint replenishing your cooldown meter.
Tumblr media
Avatar (Blue Emerald)
Allows you to create clones of yourself.
Useful for defeating any enemy that lies on you path.
Tumblr media
Bullet (Red Emerald)
Allows you to direct and shoot your character at a specified direction.
"It's an extremely useful action; it's probably the most useful action for this kind of game," Iizuka said.
Tumblr media
Water (Cyan Emerald)
Allows you to interact with any body of water, like swimming freely underwater or climbing up waterfalls.
Tumblr media
Ivy (Green Emerald)
Allows you to grow upward vines.
Helpful in reaching higher areas.
Can also be utilized to help your teammates in co-op mode.
Tumblr media
Vision (Purple Emerald)
Allows you to see hidden objects like platforms, rings, or items found in the level.
Tumblr media
Slow (Yellow Emerald)
Allows the player to slow down everything on screen.
Helpful in tighter platforming sequences or boss encounters.
Tumblr media
Extra (White Emerald)
Unlocks character-specific actions.
Sonic – Homing Attack: Unlocks the Homing Attack from the modern titles.
Tails – Tornado Spin: Unlocks a devastating tornado attack that can destroy enemies in front of you
Amy – Hammer Throw: Unlocks the ability for Amy to throw hammers instead of the usual Hammer Swing.
Knuckles – Punch: Unlocks the ability to punch for Knuckles.
Super Form (All 7 Emeralds)
Characters can turn into their Super form after collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
Characters won't have any specific abilities outside of being invincible and becoming faster.
Emerald Powers can still be used in Super form.
Development
Tumblr media
The concept of Superstars came from a Zoom call by Naoto Ohshima during the initial COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
Ohshima and Iizuka held producer roles for Sonic Superstars.
Despite hinting at a short development time than expected, Ohshima was impressed by Sonic Team and Iizuka.
"Though Arzest and Ohshima led development efforts on Sonic Superstars, Sonic Team collaborated frequently, with Iizuka and Ohshima constantly sharing ideas of and production duties."
There were talks between Iizuka and Whitehead's team following the release of Mania where concepts were considered, but the project fell through; however, Iizuka does states that he is "pleased that the next generation of Classic Sonic that we talked about with them has been achieved with Superstars."
Iizuka said that the programming for Superstars "is completely unique and done from scratch by Arzest."

As human beings, we’re not used to thinking of things being produced in industrial settings by machines. When you go to the grocery store and pick up a can of gravy, you’re not thinking about the immense machinery at the Franco-American factory, behind armoured anti-truck emplacements, pumping it out all day long. Because we are social animals, we don’t like to think about machines doing our work.
You want to believe that it’s done by individual human beings, labouring at the factory, watching for anything going wrong, committed to that product. Even if that product does cost thirty-five cents a can, isn’t a consistent shade of brown, and makes you feel like you might be about to die if you drink a mere five of them in one sitting.
Truth is, the advancement of humanity has largely been done through automation. And one of those automations, the motor vehicle, is the only good one that has ever existed. Horses are lazy and require feeding even when you’re not driving them somewhere, and walking to the next town over wears out your shoes too quickly. Human beings are simply too delicate and inconsistent to trust to any difficult or mind-numbing labour. We stop paying attention to the gravy machine, for instance, when we’re thinking about last night’s TV movie production. A machine is a better use, which frees us up.
Doubters will often say that these machines take away our jobs. And they do, but they’re shitty, awful jobs supervising the gravy machine. The problem is that there hasn’t been any replacement. Our industrial betters sneer at our jobless masses left soaking in the gutter.
This is why, when I become Prime Minister, I will create a whole shitload of cooler jobs for us to do while the machines are busy making products for us to enjoy. For instance, there currently aren’t a lot of astronauts. I will create a thousand new positions for astronauts. Will all of them make it back to earth? Maybe! At least it won’t be boring to find out. What about pinball repair? There’s hardly any jobs in that right now, but that sounds pretty good too. I’ll open Pinball Canada and we’ll make a government-socialized pinball machine that breaks down all the fucking time, so you have lots of little surprises to keep your mind active.
What you won’t have is thirty-five cent gravy. We’re gonna force the factory owner to turn up the “quality” lever to at least thirty-seven cent gravy. You’ll be able to afford the increase with all the tips you’ll make from your pinball repair gig.

🔥 for... Sonic music. :]
It's good.
Well, what other opinion could you have? :P
Alright, let's see...
I think SA2 unfairly overshadows the OSTs of the entire Adventure era. While SA1 still gets a lot of love, it pains me that Heroes is rarely considered - I think it has an unique soundtrack that takes a lot from SA1 but puts its own spin on it, a vibe that IMO only Colors matches.
ShTH's music is better than most give it credit for. Yes, a good chunk of it is generic butt metal. But then you have beautiful tracks such as The Doom, Sky Troops, Digital Circuit, The ARK, Lost Impact, GUN Fortress... The latter two are, no joke, some of my favorites in the whole series.
3D Blast has my favorite soundtrack among all Genesis games. You can feel that the composers know the console chip from the inside out by now, and those compositions hit the nail with the melody, the soundfont and the complexity.
Spinball has my second favorite soundtrack among all Genesis games. No I'm not trolling :P yes it uses the dreaded GEMS sound, but I think it fits the grittier vibe of that game. Lava Powerhouse, The Machine, the boss theme and the option themes are especially bangers to me. (yes again I'm not trolling)
I think people are too mean with the "alternative" soundtracks. I still play CD with the American soundtrack, both out of habit (I first played the game on Gems Collection) and because I think it fits the surreal, alien style of the game more. And I appreciate a lot how the Saturn soundtrack of 3D Blast incorporates the game's leitmotif, and sounds as deliciously '90s as Sonic R :P (plus You're My Hero is one of my favorite songs in the series)
Mortar Canyon is one of the best tracks Ohtani has composed in his career and y'all sleep on it because you got convinced that Forces' OST is made of nothing but Faded Hills >:( in fact, I feel about Forces' soundtrack the same way I feel about ShTH's. Yes, it has some stinkers, but a good chunk of it is great.
Actually, you know what: this is the reason I don't hate Superstars' music as much as most do. It's perfectly in line with the series. It has some duds but it has many more bangers (Lagoon City <3 Pinball Carnival <3 Press Factory <3 Special Stage <3), and I hope that Rintaro Soma has joined the fray in the same way Tee Lopes did.

"Why don't we see other Zeti?"
from dialogue, we know that there are other zeti*- but at no point during lost world or any media past it do we see any of them!!! are they dead?? 😰
this can somewhat be chalked up to a personal interpretation but one thing i feel like people don't pay attention to is the fact that we never actually go to the lost hex in any official media- every single level in lost world takes place on terrain miles above the actual surface heres pictures from every biome to prove my point
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(extra notes for these pictures- in the pinball level and lava mountain i put sonic extra high so the background would be easier to see) (in owl lights, the trees could be the floating terrain of silent forest, but if they're the proper surface its definitely the lowest point they travel to) they even went so far as to fully MODEL the surface, but we don't actually ever go to it
Tumblr media
(we don't even go there in IDW!!!) so my interpretation for why we don't see other zeti other than the deadly six is that lost world takes place exclusively inside of the six's territory, which happens to be in the sky and on the surface, there are plenty of other zeti- less than the population of sonic's world since it's much smaller but its still a developed species its unlikely that sonic and tails ever met any of the other zeti considering all this, but it's possible eggman did if you say the architecture in frozen factory is his doing since it appears on the surface as well *here are the two main lines people use to determine theres other zeti
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but also there are plenty of present-tense lines that allude to a developed culture, like zik's mention of clubbing or zeena talking about a manicure

Name: Moto Shotzo
Debut: Kirby Super Star
Hello! Welcome, welcome to another post about a Kirby enemy as I am known to do. Right this way please! The post is under this box. Please go read it now.
Tumblr media
THUNK
Heehee! You’ve fallen right into my trap! This was never REALLY just a Kirby enemy post. Now I have you as a captive audience to listen as I talk at length about an obscure Game Boy game! Heeheehee! Let’s begin.
Tumblr media
Name: Tank
Debut: Trax
Moto Shotzo is merely a cameo, a reference, to one of HAL’s earlier games, even before Kirby! Ever since learning that, I had been so intrigued, but unfortunately they never released it on the 3DS eShop for some reason, which was my only way of playing Game Boy games at the time. But now I have played it a bunch! And now I know about it and I like to know about it and I like to talk about it!
Tumblr media
Trax is a top-down shooter game starring Tank, the lovable tank. Are you wondering how a tank can be lovable? Maybe not, because you can clearly see that this tank is dang cute. But there is more than it just being cute, because it has hopes and dreams and a heroic heart! Tank is the only one of its kind in a peaceful country village, and is old and worn-out to the point it can only turn its turret in one direction. However, a military empire invades, and Tank is the only hope of its home and friends! Could it possibly defeat an entire army of countless more powerful and efficient machines all on its own! Yes! Because it believes in itself and loves and is loved!
The story becomes even more wonderful, however, when you consider how the enemy army’s main troops are tanks identical to Beloved Tank. There is no doubt that Tank was originally created for this very army, before somehow becoming peaceful and friendly! This is my favorite kind of story ever: when a machine created for evil purposes ends up, through its own willpower or through the kindness of others or whatever, rebelling against the circumstances of its creation, and even actively fighting back against it! I love love love to see this any time it happens, and for this reason Tank is such a special little thing! Usually this sort of character is on the side, but here it is the star, and I would like that to happen more often!
Tumblr media
Trax is a very short game, but very fun and cute and replayable! This image is not of Tank being haunted by a vision of its own fiery demise. This is Tank having destroyed the weapons factory that happens to also be a giant tank. They use the tank design a lot in this game, but can you blame them? It’s so cute with its bulbous body and bulbous orbs it rolls around on! They can even move around independently in a way that looks like a creature’s legs!
Tumblr media
And NOW we shall actually get to Kirby! Moto Shotzo’s only main appearance is in Super Star and its remake as an enemy, and since it is an enemy, I think we can safely assume these are the ENEMY tanks from the game. Dear Tank would not do this. Moto Shotzo is a weird name, since Shotzos are invincible and Moto Shotzos are not, but it’s fine. It’s fine!!! Really!!!
Tumblr media
Moto Shotzo’s OTHER most notable appearance is in Kirby Quest in Mass Attack, where one of the Awesome Attacks has Kirby ride on one while being chased by the first boss of Trax. Now THIS is Tank! THIS is our friend! Appearing as an ally to Kirby, and an enemy to the empire’s army! The Mass Attack minigames are basically Fanservice: The Games, but they cared enough about their history to make it beyond just Kirby, and that is wonderful!
Tumblr media
Lastly, look at this concept art for Dream Land 2! Rather than Animal Friends, Kirby was originally going to have a tank as a friend, and though the design is pretty different, this absolutely channels the spirit of Friendly Neighbor Tank. Look at it galloping like a jovial mammal!
Tumblr media
No matter how much HAL grows, they always love to celebrate their history, and I love that about them! No one is forgotten. Not Shigesato Itoi’s No. 1 Bass Fishing, not Pinball: Revenge of the Gator, and no, not Trax! Even if there has only been the one game to its name, My Biological Child Tank will be beloved forever!

I'm very good at "professionalism" I was trained from a young age. If I get an interview, I'm getting the job. I sit upright in my chair and wear a collared shirt and my employer thinks, "wow! She has a lot of passion for this role!" Buddy, you don't know the start of it. You don't even know my gender.
I'm OSHA certified. I got my 24-hour GD&T training. They can see this. What they don't see is me waxing poetical about surface finish or some shit on this website. When I was in 6th grade, I was exposed to Autodesk Inventor and it changed me fundamentally as a person. Whenever I look at any consumer good (of which there are a lot) I have to consider how it was made. And where the materials came from and how it got here and really the whole ass process. It's fascinating to me in a way that can be described as "intense". I love looking at large machines and thinking about them and taking pictures of them. There are so many steps and machines and people involved to create anything around you. I think if any person truly understood everything that happened in a single factory they would go insane with the knowledge. But by god am I trying. My uncle works specifically on the printers that print dates onto food. There are hundreds or even thousands of hyperspecific jobs like that everywhere. My employer looks away and I'm creating an unholy abomination of R and HTML, and I'm downloading more libraries so I can change the default CSS colors. I don't know anything about programming but with the power of stack overflow and sheer determination I'm making it happen. Is it very useful? No. But I'm learning a lot and more importantly I don't give a fuck. I'm learning about PLCs. I'm learing about CNC machines. I'm fucking with my laptop. I'm deleting SQL databases. I'm finding electromechanical pinball machines on facebook marketplace. I'm writing G-code by hand. I'm a freight train with no brakes. I'm moving and I'm moving fast. And buddy, you better hope I'm moving in the right direction. I must be, because all of my former employers give me stellar reviews when used as a reference. I'm winning at "career" and also in life.

this is possibly gonna get deleted later but im speculating on what video games the black phone gang would play
Vance would like retro games. Virtual pinball is a dead giveaway but I think other small arcade games like that would interest him too. like street fighter, that one zombie shooter that's in every arcade. He'd like resident evil. But secretly I think he also has a few cozy games. Like he and Bruce have a stardew farm he loves so dearly. He's also got the prettiest Animal Crossing island and insanely detailed perspective builds. He will not show you.
Bruce would have a pretty predictable selection, I feel. Stardew, Story of Seasons, Minecraft, etc. But he also plays stuff like Hades and Bayonetta! And he likes them a lot. When he starts playing Cult of the Lamb, everyone is really surprised. More so when his leadership style isn't gentle.
Finn is more of a multiplayer kinda guy. He plays with Robin and Gwen most days so his defaults are things they play together. He has a few he plays on his own like Mario or Yoshi's Island. He likes quieter games where there's no real stress (or death)
Robin is an fps and horror gamer most days. Unless he's playing with the others, you'll find him playing anything from Gears of War to Puppet Combo type stuff. He got into RE because of Vance and they only made it through 6 by complaining to each other about things they disliked with it.
Griffin is a cozy game boy. He's got an insanely pretty island on Animal Crossing. (not as good as Vance's but they have a secret agreement and he gives Griffin help if no one is around) He's played Potion Permit, Story of Seasons, Stardew, Rune Factory, etc. He's also the RPGMaker expert. And games like Spiritfarer and To The Moon are experiences he cherishes dearly.
Billy is also multi-genre. He plays anything that peaks his interest. He's the best at puzzle games though so he really likes Pictograph or Layton. Ace Attorney is another game he really enjoys. He also has the best time management in Pikmin.
Gwen will tell you she's a cozy gamer and she has the hours in ACNH and various other games to back it up. She played a lot of the same games Griffin did and they both learned to play For River together. Coffee Talk is a very special game to her. But she also could smoke you out in GTA and is more aggressive than even Vance when they all play Mario Kart. She's definitely completed a genocide run in Undertale.

Unpopular opinion: Superstars' OST is a bop
Bridge Island? A cute introduction to the game! Speed Jungle Act 1? Tee Lopes' answer to Silent Forest (another underrated track IMO)! Lagoon City Act 2? Super chill and reminescent of the Saturn era! Press Factory and Egg Fortress? The harsh synth is exactly what Eggman-themed zones need! Pinball Carnival and Lagoon City Act 1? Rintaro Soma is a welcome addition in the roster of composers! And I could go on. I've been blasting Superstars tracks much more than Frontiers' (that game has some gems too, the soundtrack is just a little bloated) :D
"oh but some of the tracks suck!" maybe, yeah! I don't like most of the boss themes (the final boss themes are good, though). But... honestly, the majority of Sonic soundtracks for me have a handful of tracks I skip, it's noral I think. The ones in my top 3 are special precisely because the "skippable" ones are limited. Also, I don't like how we still don't know the full credits of the SOT, but fans have been blaming Senoue for the "bad" sounding tracks.
(then again I find SA2's OST mediocre so I may just have shit tastes :P)
Agreed.
After days of everyone hyping up how terrible the soundtrack was, when I finally heard the whole thing for the first time, I kept thinking "...This isn't that bad...?" I genuinely thought I was missing something. Even the Sonic 4-esque tracks aren't that awful, although obviously I do prefer the S-tier bangers like Speed Jungle and Lagoon City. I agree that the regular boss tracks are among the weakest, but the Egg Diablo theme makes up for them. :P
Not to say Superstars is immune to criticism, but I've noticed that some of the people who drag the soundtrack through the mud tend to have it out for the game altogether for being a *chokes on words* Classic game. I think the moment so-called music experts decided to chime in and trash the soundtrack was when I checked out. You have to wonder where all these quick critical eyes were during Frontiers. :^)
I like the SA2 soundtrack on the whole, but it is held back a bit compared to the greater variety found in SA1, something that makes the latter one of my favourite soundtracks in the series. That said, my most controversial Sonic music opinion (probably) is that the Black Knight soundtrack is mostly forgettable. It's not bad by any means, but I have trouble remembering most of it, and that's not something that happens often with me and this franchise. Live Life is the major exception though, I love that one, and there are some other good ones sprinkled here and there.

What are your thoughts on Sonic Superstars as a whole?
I liked it! It's simple and fun, it serves its purpose as a classic game and captures the feel of the 2D main titles well in a cool new 3D way in gameplay, controls, music, plot, animation, etc. Definitely prefer Mania, especially since I replayed it earlier in the year to refresh myself on it but that doesn't mean it's bad in comparison like some are saying. It holds up against all the other classic games well, I think, so I consider that a win.
I had fun with it. I had to play single player but I feel it would've been a little more enjoyable on multi because it definitely felt like some parts were designed with it in mind, such as the length of the bosses and how much damage they can take, as I can imagine it would've been over in seconds if four players were all fighting it at once if they hadn't. True or not, some feel they drag on a little too much on single player.
The bosses ranged from enjoyable to frustratingly difficult because of how long they were. I can imagine that isn't so much of a problem with multiple players. The actual stages were almost too easy in comparison, they lacked the challenge Mania constantly offered but it made for nice relaxed gameplay in comparison where I could just sit back and enjoy, (which I'd been wanting after the nightmare difficulty of Final Horizon lol) so it's not terrible.
The Eggman themed stages like Pinball Carnival, Press Factory, and Egg Fortress included basically all my favorites and that's not even just my bias, they were the most fun for me gameplay wise too- and they also looked really fucking cool. I always love when Eggman's love for carnival shows and the dark industrial pollution of Press Factory was so awesome and my element, I enjoyed the look and the stakes of act 2 🥰💜
The new robots and boss designs both the funny huge animals and ones Eggman got to pilot were really cool too! And Eggman's adorable model and all his animations were just so precious, he's so full of life and charm and character and made me so happy. 💕 I wish he'd gotten more drawn animation and context in the plot in game but combined with the prequel comic, manga, and Trio of Trouble, it was a good amount.
Admittedly, I haven't played all of the game yet, only the main story mode, so I can only speak for that. I skipped all the extra optional acts and haven't played Trip's and the Last Story. Mostly because I got the game a couple days early but was in a rush to be somewhere, so I only played what I had to get the Eggman related stuff I needed, make my video, and be on my way. XD After main story, I didn't mind spoiling myself the rest.
I find it odd how Eggman is completely absent from Trip's and the Last Story, I hoped to see more of how Trip joined his side and I also feel there at least should've been a bit of context provided for how the dragon got out to fight because it was strange how it just appeared out of nowhere and went just as fast. I didn't expect crazy depth from a classic game but that was a little too random to just throw at you like that lol
But other than that it pretty much gave us just about everything I expected and I'm happy with it. I kinda don't think it was quiiite worth £60 as I enjoyed Mania more and that was way less expensive, (though maybe that's too soon for me to say as I haven't played the other two campaigns), so I say unless you're super eager then maybe wait for a price drop- but I do recommend the experience for a nice little fun time with a faithful classic feel!

what's kids favorite games now that they can play them? is space pinball still the top dog?
Right now Space Pinball is still top dog, but when they're older it may have some... Complicated memories attached to it.
I can see Chantal downloading a bunch of kids games plus just letting them loose on coolmathgames (all its games still work btw isn't that sick???). She thinks it's good for them to try lots of different stuff and develop their own taste in games. I think from there they'd definitely like flash games like Duck Life and Factory Balls, plus Humongous Entertainment point and click games like Pajama Sam and Spy Fox.
Of course they also watch Ashley and Chantal play video games and sometimes they get to play for a bit :-) (Brian is terrible at anything but mobile games LOL)

I ALMOST never do non-guitar or amp-related posts. And I have literally NEVER done PINBALL MACHINE post! But I just got back from my tour of the @yorkville_sound factory with @marshalllespaulfan and this so cool and "Toronto" that I figured I'd make an exception! 😉
Dig this totally insane Rush pinball machine that Yorkville has set up in their @traynor_amps museum! It's a working pinball machine, and also a juke box blasting Rush's greatest hits all day long! I'd love to work in an office where Rush was blasting every day when I got in! "Begin the day with a friendly voice" as it were... 😉
In fact, there's a little "Rush corner" in the Traynor Museum which includes some very interesting pieces used by the band on the R40 tour...but those deserve a complete post of their own. I won't say "amps"...but very much *like* amps? I can't describe them...you'll just have to wait and see! 😂
I do want to say a huge thanks to James and Ashley from Yorkville Sound for hosting and showing us around the production facility and warehouse (where EVERY @gibsonguitar guitar sold in Canada passes through and is QC-ed before being shipped out!), and introducing us to so many Yorkville staff who could not have been more friendly and welcoming - including @oldcrowcustomguitars whom I have been following on Insta for literally years (PS: thanks for showing me my first PLEK machine!)
Everyone we talked to was super proud, positive, and happy to talk about the work they are doing here - manufacturing the highest quality amplifiers and speaker cabinets, right here in Canada. It was a super positive experience and great to see.
More pics from the museum to follow! Including those mystery Rush "amps" alluded to earlier... 🤣
