Coming soon: Flying taxis at 2025 World Expo
Kyodo News | 22 February 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ANA Holdings Inc., Japan Airlines Co. and three other companies have been selected to operate air taxi services during the 2025 World Exposition to be held in Osaka in western Japan, the event's organizer said Tuesday.
Japan wants the "flying cars" to be one of the main attractions at the expo, with the next-generation mobility expected to provide access to the event venue to be set up on an artificial island in Osaka Bay.
Tumblr media
ANA Holdings, the parent of All Nippon Airways Co., will partner with U.S. startup Joby Aviation Inc., a company in which Toyota Motor Corp. has a stake.
Other companies selected as operators are SkyDrive Inc., based in Aichi Prefecture, and trading firm Marubeni Corp.
Tumblr media
Naoki Okada, minister in charge of the World Expo 2025, said he hopes the technology will "surprise" people around the world.
He also called on the five companies to cooperate on demonstration flights prior to the start of the 184-day event.
The flying cars, which will carry two to five people each, will connect the three areas of the exposition venue on Yumeshima, central Osaka city, and nearby Kansai International Airport.
Their flight routes, landing and takeoff areas are to be determined.
Tumblr media
ANA Holdings will operate a five-seat vertical takeoff and landing aircraft developed by Joby Aviation.
In October, the California-based company applied for its aircraft design to be certified for use in Japan.
JAL will operate two-rider aircraft developed by German firm Volocopter GmbH, while Marubeni will operate five-seater aircraft created by Vertical Aerospace Group Ltd., a British company, after reserving in January delivery slots for 25 of them.
SkyDrive is looking to get a type certificate for its two-rider aircraft, still in development, before the exposition.
Meanwhile, the operator of the takeoff and landing sites at the exposition venue on Yumeshima will be Orix Corp., according to the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition.
The World Expo 2025 will last from April 13 through October 13 under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."

Although crypto exchange Binance continues its legal battle with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, it is seeking new opportunities in the overseas market. The latest development shows that Binance is gearing up to launch stablecoins denominated in USD, EUR, and Japanese Yen, by 2024, in Japan’s booming crypto industry. For this project, Binance has joined hands with the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group’s trust banking arm. MUFG general manager Takeshi Chino said that the two firms are jointly working on the issuance In June, Japan passed a law permitting licensed companies to issue stablecoins, leading firms like Orix Corp. to consider launching these tokens, which promise benefits such as faster money transfers and settlements. Besides, MUFG has engaged in discussions with various entities regarding the utilization of its blockchain platform, Progmat, for creating stablecoins linked to foreign currencies. According to Tatsuya Saito, MUFG’s vice president of product, Japan’s stablecoin market has the potential to reach up to ¥5 trillion ($34 billion), representing approximately a quarter of the estimated current global market size. According to the announcement, Binance must obtain a license in Japan as an electronic settlement methods transaction business provider to execute the issuance plan. Upon completion, users will also have the ability to utilize stablecoins for cryptocurrency trading and potentially engage in payment services, as stated by Chino. Binance Expands In Overseas Market Binance has been facing the heat of regulatory crackdown across the world and in key markets like the US, Australia, UK, and others. However, it still continues to engage in meaningful dialogue with regulators to bring clarity to crypto rules. In a recent move, Binance reopened its Belgium operations after nearly 3 months of regulatory pause. Last week, reports suggested that Binance is planning to delist stablecoins in the European market by June 2024. This was in the wake of the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) rules that will come into effect by December 2024. However, Binance chief Changpeng Zhao has issued a clarification regarding this matter. CZ said that there was some misunderstanding in the statement given by Marina Parthuisot, Binance’s French legal director, who said that Europe is yet to give approval on stablecoins. CZ added that they already have a couple of partners in Europe and plan to launch a fully compliant stablecoin. Source

Old people in big cities killing people with cars
*Maybe Japan can replace the deadly cars with less-dangerous robotized urban wheelchairs.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2019/07/10/business/tech/japan-eyes-innovation-effort-curtail-traffic-accidents-elderly-drivers/
Japan is turning to technology to help prevent traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers in the country, a growing problem as the population ages.
Orix Auto Corp. offers a service that enables senior citizens to measure their abilities behind the wheel via personal computers and smartphones.
With Ever Drive, the company collects data on driving behavior using a device fitted to the vehicle that measures the frequency of sudden braking and acceleration as well as speeding in order to visualize the risks. The monthly fee is ¥2,980.
“When we started the service in 2017, we had anticipated users would be professionals such as taxi drivers and truck drivers, but more than 80 percent of the current users are the elderly aged from their late 70s to early 80s,” a company official said.
The person said the service is providing an opportunity for family members to begin a conversation to convince elderly drivers to give up their licenses.
“When a parent and their offspring talk about returning the parent’s license, they often get into emotional arguments, with the child saying it is dangerous for the elderly person to drive and the parent arguing that he or she can still drive safely,” the official said.
“If Ever Drive is used, they can cite specific numbers in their discussions, so there is the upside that they both can feel more convinced,” the official said.
For seniors who have given up driving, cutting-edge powered wheelchairs offer an alternative, enabling them to move freely around the neighborhood.
“Now I enjoy going out, since I can easily go to the convenience store or drug store,” said 91-year-old Akio Takahashi, a Tokyo resident who tested the powered wheelchair, called Whill,” in May.
In April, an elderly driver killed a 3-year-old girl and her mother and injured nine other passersby in an accident in central Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district.
Around the same time, Takahashi saw a newspaper ad for the wheelchair. The suggested retail price was ¥450,000, but the ad said it could be rented for a limited period for around ¥10,000 a month.
Whill Inc. started receiving more inquiries following the fatal accident in Ikebukuro, according to company officials.
The wheelchair can move forward, backward and rotate — all with the use of one lever. For braking, the wheelchair stops when the lever is released. Since it is more compact than standard powered wheelchairs, it can also fit inside apartment elevators.
Takahashi gave up his driver’s license at the age of 85, although he was still confident in his driving ability and had a spotless record. In the end, his family persuaded him to stop driving, noting that his driving skills would deteriorate as he ages and possibly lead to “something unthinkable happening.”
“In the balance of things, I put a priority on safety over inconvenience,” Takahashi said, adding that he used to find it difficult to go outside without a car. Supporting himself with a cane, he would often be out of breath after walking several hundred meters....

Car-sharing service operator Orix Auto Corp. couldn't figure out what certain customers were doing with its rental cars.
The service, with 230,000 registered users, realized around summer 2018 that some people who rented vehicles never actually drove them.
Orix examined its mileage records after it was asked about the issue by a media outlet and found several percent of its rented vehicles “traveled no distance.”
“We have no clear idea how they actually used our vehicles,” said an Orix public relations official. “The only thing we can say is that data show a number of people rent cars without driving them.”
Other car-sharing services also reported vehicles being returned that logged unusually low mileage and conducted customer surveys hoping to solve the mystery.
📌 Read more article about 7 Dangerous Brain Damaging Habits To Stop Immediately. Click 👉 here
Times24 Co., the leadingautomobile-sharing service provider, with more than 1.2 million registered users, discovered that some utilize their cars for surprising purposes.
One respondent to the company's survey said they rented vehicles to nap in or use for a workspace. Another person stored bags and other personal belongings in the rental car when nearby coin lockers were full.
In the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, rental cars were also used to recharge cellphones.
SPACE TO EAT, SLEEP AND THINK
"I rented a car to eat a boxed meal that I bought at a convenience store because I couldn't find anywhere else to have lunch,"said a 31-year-old male company employee who lives in Saitama Prefecture, close to Tokyo.
“Usually the only place I can take a nap while visiting my clients is a cybercafe in front of the station, but renting a car to sleep in is just a few hundred yen (several dollars), almost the same as staying in the cybercafe.”Easy accessibility is a big advantage of car-sharing services. Customers can reserve vehicles any time 24 hours a day on their smartphones for immediate use.
It only costs around 400 yen to use one for 30 minutes that can be picked up at one of the firm's more than 12,000 parking places across Japan.
Those advantages likely lead more consumers to use rental automobiles for unusual uses.
Survey results by other firms show the number of customers who rent cars for reasons besides driving is steadily rising.
NTT Docomo Inc., which operates a vehicle-sharing service, found in a 2018 survey of 400 customers that one out of every eight users rented automobiles for purposes other than transportation.
📌 Read more article about 10 Deadly Signs of Skin Cancer You Need to Spot Immediately. Click 👉 Here
An overwhelmingly large number of respondents said they slept or rested in vehicles, followed by customers who said they used cars as spots to talk with friends, family and business clients on the phone.
LESS MILEAGE MEANS LOST INCOME
People also rented vehicles to watch TV in, get dressed up for Halloween, practice singing, rapping and English conversation, and even do facial stretches said to reduce the size of their face, NTT found.
“Cars can be used for private space,” said the NTT Docomo official in charge of the study. “People used our vehicles in more ways than we expected.”
Though most customers rent share-use vehicles for driving, the number who rent them primarily for other uses is slowly rising.
Some service providers, however, are a bit embarrassed about the ways their vehicles are being used.
Operators also lose cash when consumers rent vehicles for “non-driving purposes” since customers pay more if they log a lot of mileage.
Another problem is that some users stay in cars with the engine left running to beat the heat in summer or stay warm during winter, but that could have negative effects on the environment.
“Motorists should shut off their engines when they're not driving, and we do not recommend our customers rent vehicles for purposes other than traveling,” said an Orix public relations official. “We believe it's best for our cars to be used for driving.”

Earnings Calendar For The Week Of February 1
Monday (February 1)
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: VERTEX PHARMACEUTICALS, NXP SEMICONDUCTORS, ON SEMICONDUCTOR
VERTEX PHARMACEUTICALS: The biopharmaceutical company is expected to report a profit of $2.55 in the fourth quarter, which represents year-over-year growth of 50% from the same quarter a year ago when the company reported $1.70 cents per share.
However, Wall Street forecasts the company’s revenue to grow about 12% to $1.58 billion.
“Q4 estimates for Vertex‘s CF franchise appear achievable based on recent trends. With industry-leading growth and its fundamentals largely intact despite COVID-19, we expect the current dislocation between Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ (VRTX) trading price and the value of its CF franchise to be only temporary. We would use the recent stock weakness to build a position,” said equity analysts at Cowen and Company, who also gave a price target of $300.
NXP SEMICONDUCTORS: Eindhoven, Netherlands-based semiconductor manufacturer will post earnings of $2.11 per share in the December quarter on revenue of $2.46 billion, up from $1.98 per share on revenue of $2.30 billion same quarter last year. For the December quarter, the forecasts revenue in the range of $2.375-$2.525 billion which, at the midpoint, represents growth of 8% sequentially and 6% year-over-year.
“Management remains upbeat about near-term demand, including 2021, especially regarding its mobile chip business as the firm’s ultra-wideband connectivity solutions are rapidly gaining adoption within newer smartphones. We raise our fair value estimate to $150 from $130, and with shares trading around $134, we view shares as slightly undervalued,” said equity analysts at Cowen and Company.
ON SEMICONDUCTOR: Phoenix, Arizona-based semiconductors supplier company will post earnings of $0.28 per share for last quarter of 2020. The revenue is expected to slump 3.0% on a year-over-year basis.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: PFIZER, ALIBABA, AMAZON, ALPHABET
PFIZER: The world’s largest pharmaceutical giant is expected to report a profit of $0.52 in the fourth quarter, which represents a year-over-year decline of about 5.4% from the same quarter last year when the company reported $0.55 per share.
The pharmaceutical company, which ranked 64th on the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the largest U.S. corporations by total revenue, will report revenue of $12.85 billion, up 1.3% from the year-ago quarter. According to chief executive officer Albert Bourla, Pfizer is likely to post this year’s earnings in the range of $3 to $3.10 per share.
“We lowered our 4Qe revenue by 5% from $11.6B to $11.0B and EPS by 6% from $0.40 to $0.38 to reflect lower doses delivered in 4Q. We lowered our 4Q COVID vaccine revenues from $683M to $150M (assuming $19.50/dose). Our prior model assumed 35M doses, which we lowered to 7.7M doses based upon CDC distribution allocations,” said David Risinger, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Our 4Q projections are well below consensus, but we do not see 4Q results as a stock driver given all of the confounding factors. We are instead focused on management’s 2021 targets.”
ALIBABA: The largest online and mobile e-commerce company in the world is expected to earn $2.65 per share for the third quarter, according to equities analysts at Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer also set EPS estimates for FY2021 at $7.48 and FY2022 at $9.33.
The Chinese multinational technology company has surpassed consensus estimates with an average of about 25% in all four previous quarters.
“We expect healthy GMV growth of 16% to drive core of core revenue growth of 18% on better monetization, but slower adjusted EBITA growth of 11% due to continued investment in new initiatives. Stay Overweight on F2022e non-GAAP P/E of 19x; lower price target to $320,” said Gary Yu, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“We forecast total revenue of Rmb216bn (+33.8% YoY, +39.3% QoQ), non-GAAP EBITA of Rmb61.5bn (+21.4% YoY, +49.2% QoQ) with margin at 28.5% and non-GAAP net profit of Rmb57.2bn (+17.7% YoY, +16.1% QoQ) with margin at 26.5%.”
AMAZON: The eCommerce leader for physical and digital merchandise is expected to report a profit of $7.16 in the fourth quarter, which represents a year-over-year decline of over 10% from the same quarter last year when the company reported $6.47 per share.
The Seattle, Washington-based multinational technology giant will report revenue of $120.4 billion, up over 37% from the year-ago quarter. The company expects net sales between $112- $121 billion during the quarter.
“Amazon‘s high-margin businesses continue to allow Amazon to drive greater profitability while still continuing to invest (last-mile delivery, fulfilment, Prime Now, Fresh, Prime digital content, Alexa/Echo, India, AWS, etc),” noted Brian Nowak, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“Amazon Prime membership growth drives recurring revenue and a positive mix shift. Cloud adoption hitting an inflection point. Advertising serves as a key area for both further growth potential and profitability flow-through.”
ALPHABET: The parent of Google and the world’s largest search engine, which dominates Internet search activity globally will post earnings of $15.68 per share for last quarter of 2020. The consensus mark for revenues is pegged at $44.09 billion, implying growth of 17.3% from the year-ago reported figure, according to ZACKS Research.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: QUALCOMM
QUALCOMM: San Diego, California-based multinational corporation that creates an intellectual property, semiconductors, software, and services related to wireless technology is expected to report a profit of $2.10 in the fiscal first quarter, which represents year-over-year growth of over 110% from the same quarter last year when the company reported $0.99 per share.
The semiconductor company will report revenue of $80.3 billion, up over 60% from the year-ago quarter.
“We see an improvement in smartphone demand in 2021 after declining 5% in 2020 due to COVID-19. We also see 5G adding greater dollar content and supporting industry-wide handset volume growth. Qualcomm’s (QCOM) leadership in cellular technologies (3G/4G/5G) puts the company in a favourable position to maintain leading market share,” wrote Joseph Moore, equity analyst at Morgan Stanley.
“The potential elimination of a major competitor in the Chinese market, HiSilicon, should benefit QCOM as Huawei currently does not pay royalties. To the extent competitors that do pay royalties are able to pick up market share, that would be beneficial for QCOM.”

Renting cars and not driving them
http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201907040011.html
One of many parking lots for car-sharing services, available everywhere in urban areas, in Tokyo’s Minato Ward on June 14 (Takeho Morita)
Times24 Co., the leading automobile-sharing service provider, with more than 1.2 million registered users, discovered that some utilize their cars for surprising purposes.
“Usually the only place I can take a nap while visiting my clients is a cybercafe in front of the station, but renting a car to sleep in is just a few hundred yen (several dollars), almost the same as staying in the cybercafe.”
Easy accessibility is a big advantage of car-sharing services.
“People used our vehicles in more ways than we expected.”...

Why some Japanese people are renting cars — but not driving them General Motors’ new car-sharing service, Maven, will provide customers access to highly personalized, on-demand mobility services. A reported pilot program could extend that service to include vehicles owned by customers. At first it was confusing. Orix Auto Corp, a car-sharing company in Japan with around 230,000 registered users, discovered a portion of its rented vehicles had “traveled no distance,” meaning those who’d paid to use them hadn’t actually driven anywhere. As it happens, Orix wasn’t the only company to have noticed the trend, reports Japanese national newspaper The Asahi Shimbun. A leading provider in the car-sharing space called Times24 Co. (1.2 million users) also noted a lack of miles being added in some instances. So it did a survey of its customers and found some interesting answers to the question ‘What were you doing in that rental car if not driving?’ One person said they’d used the cars to store bags and other items when local coin-operated lockers weren’t available. Another said they’d paid for cars to nap or work in. “Usually the only place I can take a nap while visiting my clients is a cybercafe in front of the station, but renting a car to sleep in is just a few hundred yen (a few dollars), almost the same as staying in the cybercafe,” said one survey respondent. Following the earthquake that devastated parts of Japan in 2011, some cars were used as charging points for cell phones. Another survey responder just wanted a place to

Debt-ridden IL&FS has decided to constitute a sub-committee to oversee the process of divestment of its assets in light of the Reserve Bank of India's June 7 circular which has laid guidelines for resolution of bad loans.
The decision to form a sub-panel was taken in its board meeting held on June 28, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS) said in a statement.
During the meeting, IL&FS board reviewed the progress on divestment of all domestic and foreign assets outlined in its resolution framework.
The board has decided to constitute a six-member empowered committee, including four directors Vineet Nayyar, C S Rajan and Bijay Kumar to discuss and finalise the asset-wise framework of resolution with lenders.
The board decided to empower the panel to take necessary steps to enhance enterprise value of assets under divestment.
"This committee is formed in view of positive response received from financial institutions to the framework outlined, by Prudent Norms for resolution of stressed assets issued by RBI on June 7 earlier this year," it said.
After the Supreme Court quashed RBI's guidelines on stressed assets, released in February 2018, the central bank on June 7 came out with revised norms which gave more room to lenders for resolution of bad loans.
It further said the board also decided to allow the bidders for toll road assets to jointly monitor traffic data and assess revenue stream.
The board noted that the stake sale in seven wind energy special purpose vehicles (SPVs) is in final stage after Orix has conveyed it's decision to match GAIL's offer.
LIC, which is IL&FS biggest shareholder with a more than 25 per cent stake while Japan's ORIX Corp with a 23.54 per cent stake and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority with 12.56 per cent.
