…but yeah anyways, to my eternal shame and endless regret I’ve somehow ended up accidentally half-shipping Udo and Pfirsich?? Like, I KNOW there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell but gosh, those two are just so cute and little man does act like he’s got a bit of an unrequited crush at times. :’) I’m ridiculously soft for how protective they are of each other and how much Udo fusses over him whenever Pfirsich gets hurt – I swear that always reliably activates my ship instincts, it’s like some kind of horrible Pavlovian reaction lol. And, in my defence, Barr did draw them kissing. I remember reading that particular side story for the first time and being like ,, oh?? Oh. ohohoOH NO–

Also Rosen is a fun character but an awful love interest and I found myself liking him less and less as the series went on, so possibly I’m just tempted to ship Pfirsich with someone else out of spite. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Honestly though, I just really love their dynamic in general and I’ll take it any way you can slice it: as platonic friendship or found family or whatever. <3 They’re polar opposites but they get one another in a way nobody else does, and the mutual respect/affection/trust/reliance that develops between them is arguably the emotional lynchpin of the entire series. Pfirsich is our eponymous hero and The Desert Peach is primarily his story, but I can’t think of the series without picturing the pair of them, together. Their relationship gets more focus and development than any other, and it’s an absolute joy to see how it evolved from that disastrous first meeting to the tentative, still-rocky beginnings of a friendship, to how close they were by the end in Issue #30.

#the desert peach #I gave myself so much first-hand embarrassment writing this lol #pls either kill me or reciprocate with a more embarrassing ship so I don’t have to suffer alone #Oberleutnant Kavalier DNI #still maintain that I got dragged into this against my will #it was 100% unintentional and I was MORTIFIED when I realised what my stupid brain was up to #I loved it as a friendship first and I accidentally got all emotionally attached to Udo (haha BIG mistake) #and at some point I decided Rosen was hot garbage #and I distinctly remember being an inconsolable wreck after finishing Issue 29 #and joking to myself (through my tears) “well I guess the real love story was Udo & Pfirsich all along huh” #and THEN I read Reluctant Affections... #and then the ship kicked in my door and grabbed me by the throat #and I guess I just live here now #in hell #Suffering
