Islamic State group offshoot claims 2017 Niger attack on US
DAKAR, Senegal
An Islamic State group offshoot is claiming it carried out the October attack in Niger that killed four U.S. soldiers and four Nigerian troops and sparked questions about U.S. military involvement in West Africa’s vast Sahel region.
The Mauritanian Nouakchott News Agency reported Friday that Abu al-Walid al-Sahrawi with the self-professed IS affiliate claimed responsibility for the Oct. 4 ambush about 120 miles north of Niger’s capital, Niamey. The news agency has carried messages from the affiliate before, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites.
The U.S. Africa Command has been investigating the attack, which also wounded two U.S. and eight Nigerian troops. A final report is expected to be released this month.
A 12-member Army special forces unit was accompanying 30 Nigerian forces when they were attacked in a densely wooded area by as many as 50 militants traveling by vehicle and carrying small arms and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
The Pentagon has declined to release details about the commando team’s exact mission. U.S. officials have said the joint U.S.-Niger patrol had been asked to assist a second American commando team hunting for a senior Islamic State group member. The team had been asked to go to a location where the insurgent had last been seen.
France’s playful baby panda makes 1st public appearance
PARIS
France’s first baby panda has made his grand public entrance by acting like many five-month-olds – climbing all over his mother, who looked like she just wanted to rest instead.
Mostly hidden from view since his birth in August, the panda named Yuan Meng left his den Saturday for his first public appearance. BFM TV video showed him endlessly crawling over his mother, who at one point gathered the black-and-white ball of fur to her side before he escaped again to climb over her.
French first lady Brigitte Macron, considered the panda’s “godmother,” announced the panda’s name at a ceremony in December at Beauval Zoo, south of Paris, attended by Chinese officials. It means “the realization of a wish” or “accomplishment of a dream.”
Suspect in postal worker deaths to be tried in federal court
COLUMBUS
A disgruntled postal worker accused of fatally shooting his supervisor at an Ohio post office and then killing a postmaster outside her apartment will be tried in federal court.
County and federal prosecutors in Columbus said Friday that sending the case to federal court was a joint decision.
Police said 24-year-old DeShaune Stewart, of Columbus, shot and killed 52-year-old Lance Dempsey at a post office in suburban Dublin on Dec. 23.
They said he then killed 53-year-old Ginger Ballard at an apartment complex.
Authorities said Stewart was naked during both attacks.
Police said the violence appeared to be retaliation against two people involved in Stewart’s pending dismissal at work.
A message seeking a comment was left at his public defender’s office Saturday.
Girl Scouts join fight over bridge named for segregationist
SAVANNAH, Ga.
Lawmakers can expect face-to-face meetings with Girl Scouts from across Georgia next month at the state Capitol, where the young Scouts plan on treating legislators to a milk-and-cookie reception.
These girls bearing gifts of Thin Mints and Samoas will also come packing an agenda. They want to see Savannah’s towering suspension bridge renamed in honor of Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the Girl Scouts in the coastal Georgia city more than a century ago.
The Girl Scouts saw an opening last fall when Savannah’s city council formally asked state lawmakers during their 2018 session to strip the name of segregationist former Gov. Eugene Talmadge from the bridge. Georgia Scouts are getting support from the Girl Scouts’ national headquarters in New York, which has hired a lobbyist to help sway lawmakers in Atlanta.
Rep. Ron Stephens, a Republican from Savannah, is on board with the switch. He said he plans to introduce a bill Feb. 6, when Girl Scout leaders plan to bring as many as 300 Scouts to the Capitol.
“I can’t think of a name that could go on the bridge at the Savannah River that would mean more,” Stephens said of Low, though he’s not optimistic fellow lawmakers will agree if that means rescinding an honor bestowed on a former governor.
Man convicted in beard-cutting attacks files an appeal
CLEVELAND
The leader of a breakaway Amish group in Ohio convicted in hair- and beard-cutting attacks is asking a federal judge to overturn his 2012 convictions.
Samuel Mullet Sr. is arguing in an appeal filed Friday that his former attorney made a series of mistakes during the trial and in his previous appeals.
His former attorney said in court documents that he did make errors handling the case.
The U.S. Supreme Court decided last year not to review Mullet’s appeal challenging the constitutionality of federal hate crimes.
Prosecutors said Mullet directed the hair-cutting attacks. Hair and beards have spiritual significance in the Amish faith.
Mullet is serving an 11-year sentence. The 15 other members of the eastern Ohio Amish community convicted in the case have since been released.
Research aims to predict algae blooms on lakes, rivers
TOLEDO
Researchers along the Ohio River are trying to figure out how to predict which rivers and lakes in Ohio and other states are at risk from toxic algae.
They said it could help prevent algae outbreaks and be a model for states around the nation seeing an increasing number of waterways plagued by harmful algae.
Researchers at Ohio State University are starting the multi-year project to create a classification system for waterways to say what areas are at risk.
They’ll be collecting and analyzing water samples and studying land-use in the Ohio River’s basin in southern Ohio, northern Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Another project that includes researchers from the University of Cincinnati is setting up a series of sensors along the Ohio River to detect harmful algae.
Police probe man’s claim that wife died on Graceland trip
HARTVILLE, Ohio
Police in Ohio are investigating what happened to a woman who went with her husband to see Elvis Presley’s Graceland.
The woman’s husband told police in Hartville that they were in Memphis, Tenn., just over a week ago when she died in a hotel parking lot.
Philip Snider said his 69-year-old wife was in poor health and this was to be their last trip.
He said he flagged down an ambulance after she died and rescue workers took his wife’s body. He said he returned to Ohio because he didn’t know where they took her.
But police in Hartville said Tennessee authorities don’t have a record of the woman’s body. Police told the Akron Beacon Journal that Snider’s memory might be suspect, and it’s not clear if he misled police.
Chelsea Manning files for US Senate bid in Maryland
NORTH BETHESDA, Md.
Chelsea Manning intends to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, returning the transgender former soldier to the spotlight after her conviction for leaking classified documents and her early release from military prison.
Manning, 30, filed her statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, listing an apartment in North Bethesda as her address.
She is running as a Democrat and will likely challenge two-term Sen. Ben Cardin in the primary. The state’s senior senator is an overwhelming favorite to win.

A Tale of Two Clinics
A few days ago I posted on my Facebook page, a few words with pictures concerning my experience with two health clinics, under contract with the Veterans Administration.  I now have time to share with you...
A Tale of Two Clinics.
This story began on a crisp, September morning when my friend Keith picked me up for a 9:00 a.m. appointment at Oakwood Medical Group in Madison Heights, Michigan.  The letter I received in the mail, a week earlier, read:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has contracted with QTC to conduct VA Compensation and Pension examinations for veterans and active duty service members.
They went on to inform me that I would be getting a chest x-ray as part of their “conducted VA exam.”  It’s a 35-mile, one-hour ride, to this clinic in a suburb, north of Detroit.  Almost all expressway, and at 8:00 a.m. on a Thursday, it’s jammed packed with impatient commuters making their way to the Motor City.
Tumblr media
Did I mention that the roads in this part of Michigan aren’t always smooth?   Pot holes can be teeth-jarring. And when you have two fractured ribs, this can be an "exciting road trip.”
On this particular morning, we made it with only a few delays, and I walked into the clinic, with one minute to spare!  I filled out (yet) another form, and minutes later I was called into the x-ray room. Ten minutes later Keith and I were on our way back to Garden City.  This turned out to be a pleasant experience with the VA.
Another letter, I received, on the same day and with my appointment notification that I would be visiting the two clinics for my examinations, read:
                            IMPORTANT NOTICE TO DISABILITY CLAIMANTS
Within the body of the letter was an invitation to participate in a “medical disability examination” survey.  I give this clinic: A plus.
Appointment Number Two takes place in the afternoon, at QTC - CANTON, MI CLINIC.  I have no idea what QTC stands for, but I know where the Canton, Michigan location can be found.  It;s only six miles west on Ford Road.  This is a twelve-minute drive - something I can handle.
Tumblr media
I leave with a 15 minutes "cushion."  I’m anal about appointments.  If I arrive in LESS THAN 15 minutes, I consider myself late.  I hate being late for anything! Little do I realize that I would need every second of those 15 extra minutes.  The above is a picture of the QTC address.  I’m not kidding, this is the actual, physical location of a VA Clinic.  They are sharing a portion of the building with a PLASTIC SURGEON!
It's the home of Dr. Mohamad Bazzi.  He is advertising that this is the place, and I quote, where you can expect:  “A comprehensive approach to plastic surgery.”  I had been driving up and down Ford Road, looking for QTC Medical Services.  It never occurred to me they were located in this building.
Look closely at the picture. No sign.  Not even one of those cheap, roadside, cardboard advertisements with a big arrow pointing, with a big, printed message, that reads:  WE ARE HERE!
Tumblr media
I parked the car and walk into the plastic surgeons' office.  It's nice.  A young lady greets me with a smile, and I quickly replied:  “I’m not here for plastic surgery. Is this the right place for …”
Before I can finish my sentence, the blonde receptionist,  with dazzling white teeth and a flawless complexion, nods in the affirmative.
“Just about everyone asks that question.  This is the place.  If you take a seat, I’ll call for the QTC Technician.”  Seconds later, a fortyish,  slightly overweight, black lady, (appropriately dressed in a medical technicians outfit) greets me with a warm smile, and I’m led to the “clinic.”
I asked, and she explained that they have only been open for a month or so and are having difficulty with the city in the placement of a sign.  I thought to myself, ‘Oh, brother!  Give me a break!’
For the next 15 or 29  minutes, I was poked and prodded.  I was asked the usual clinic-like questions.  I gave them a health history narrative that would cause a grown man to cry!  (As a matter-of-fact, it has.)
Next, I'm given a good fashion old blood pressure test.  Blood was drawn, and my temperature indicated I was NOT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE!
The day before this exam, I kiddingly told my wife that I’m off for a medical exam and a visit with the “VA Gestapo.”  Little did I know how close to the truth that statement!  This absolutely charming technician escorts me into the presence of Dr. Nwabueze, a VA contract doctor from Georgia!  He had flown in last night from Macon.  The doctor was very professional in his crisp, white lab coat,  I couldn't help but notice, he spoke with an accent.
STOP!  You were thinking German.  You were visualizing a Rutger Hauer type doctor, the guy who is one of the stars in Blade Runner.  Cold. Heartless.
NOT!  I like this guy.  I think we'll get along just fine.
“Where are you from, Doctor? I detect an accent that sounds familiar. Nigerian?”
“Yes!  I attended medical school in Nigeria and then came to the United States, a number of years ago, with my family.  I have a private practice medicine.”
“Hey, that’s great!”
His smile told me that we had "connected" and the remainder of my exam would go like clockwork.  Little did I know the clock was broken and, like the need for an outdoor sign, there was no repairman in sight!
This guy was thorough.  I’m sure he was following some VA script, and he asked me one question, after another,  It seemed to go on for an eternity.
Tumblr media
I’m sitting at the edge of an exam table (yes, this is the room, and that’s the table).   As you can see, there is no back support, My ribs are beginning to ache, I’m overdue for pain meds,  and I want to go home.
When the questions are over, he listens to my heart and my chest.  It’s as if the VA has told him that Bill Kren is claiming lung cancer - let’s see if he’s  telling the truth.
Finally, after another 25 minutes of grueling,  pinpoint questioning, Dr. Nwabueze closes the folder on me, smiles and says,
“One last test and you can go home.”
That “one last test” almost sends me to a real hospital.  It’s a pulmonary function test (PFT) - something that is non-invasive, and it will show how well the lungs are working. Keep in mind, I’ve just completed two weeks of radiation treatments.  I’m tired, and I have two fractured ribs.  In walks the tech who greeted me earlier.
Tumblr media
With a smile, she announces that I will be breathing into this plastic mouthpiece, connected to a very odd looking medical device.  I couldn’t take a picture of this procedure - so above is a picture I snagged off of the internet This closely resembles the “item of torture.”
I know it looks innocent.  It’s not.  Five deep breathing attempts and my blowing into that piece of “plastic of horror” resulted in “failure!”  I reminded the tech, after the fifth futile try, that I do have fractured ribs and it is difficult getting a deep enough breath for this test.
She leaves to check with Dr. Nwabueze.  I could hear their voices in the next room, but the conversation was muted by the wall.  I could only guess what they discussed.
She returned and advised me that to get a passing test, I would be required to use an inhaler.  I do not like inhalers.  I objected.  She insisted - threatening me with banishment to the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor and a rescheduling of this torture.  I relented, used the inhaler, and 15 minutes later it was attempt number six.
I failed the test.
Oh, I did achieve some success in inhaling and pushing out more oxygen.  But my ribs still hurt and I was practically hyperventilating. I kid you not.  I almost fainted and found myself leaning on this dear soul.  After a second or two I whispered,
“Give me a minute and I'll try one more time.”
A few minutes later, I successfully pleased the tech!   I passed!  The torture machine had brutally acquired all the information necessary, and I was allowed to walk out of the clinic - a free man!
Outside, as I walked to my car, I looked at my watch.  I had been in this clinic for almost two hours!  I was exhausted, sore, and just a little dismayed.  Why does the government do this to a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran?  All I’m asking for is little compensation for my service to my country.  I didn’t ask for an Agent Orange lung tumor.
I drove home, tired but relieved that it was all over.  As for my claim, I really don’t care what the Veterans Administration decides.  I’’m just happy to be alive and I’m going home to bed.
One last thing, before I end my story.  The people in this story are real.  And they were only doing their job. I know the technician who helped me through the testing, was a compassionate soul.  At times, I detected that she was feeling helpless, for this old guy.  I assured her that my God was real and he was keeping me safe and strong in his loving hands.  In the times of testing (and torture) - you just keep your eyes on Jesus and trust in Him.  He will help you.  He will keep you.
But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love.  And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering.  Jude 20-22 (NLT)

The brave agents of the US Secret Service protect the President with their lives, boldly taking bullets, investigating death threats, all the while never once removing their cool sunglasses or smiling in utter glee. Talk about hardcore! But in truth, they’re just human beings, regular employees like any one of us. They just happen to carry really big guns and get insight into the private lives of very public figures.  Here are some of the more interesting and captivating stories surrounding the Secret Service.
#1 Abraham Lincoln Created the Secret Service Hours Before He Was Shot Allegedly, Lincoln had personal omens pointing to his assassination, so it really sucks that he only managed to create the Secret Service on the same day he would later die. Lincoln’s actions, however, were not motivated by paranoia.  Rather, he created the Secret Service Division on April 14, 1865 in order to stop counterfeiting operations.  The legislation was literally on Lincoln’s desk and ready to be put into action. Of course, even if the Secret Service had existed beforehand, it couldn’t have done much to prevent the assassination.  There were only a few other federal agencies in action at the time: the US Park Police, Post Office, and the US Marshals. None of these organizations had the manpower to protect the President, so there was no reason to think the Secret Service would either. In those days, Presidents fought off their would-be attackers with a big stick. Even though Lincoln notoriously died from the bullet of an assassin, it would still take another 30+ years, and two more murdered Presidents (James Garfield and William McKinley), for the Government to finally realize “Oh crap, there really are people out there who want to kill the President.” By the time the Secret Service officially became a protection unit in 1908, the President was finally in safe hands.
#2 The Confederacy had a Secret Service Before the Union Did Ironically, the Secret Service of the Confederate States of America was probably far more prepared than the soon-to-be-born US version. During the Civil War, there were a number of secret operations going on, many of which were beyond official warfare.  Yes, there was a Cold War and a Civil War going on at the same time. This was necessary from the Confederates’ point of view, since they were outnumbered, out-gunned, and out-resourced in every way. What their operations consisted of, we don’t know. By the time the war was all but lost, the Confederacy destroyed all the paperwork covering their clandestine operations. Whatever inventive strategies they cooked up, they apparently didn’t work too well. Mission to subvert the union through chicanery and espionage: totally failed.
#3 They Created the FBI For all we know, magicians, dragons, and UFOs are 100% real. However, because there was no FBI, and thus no X-Files Unit, until the 1930’s, nobody can ever know for sure. What happened was, the US Department of Justice hired the Secret Service to conduct nationwide investigations beyond the reach of state officials. This led to the official formation of the Bureau of Investigation, which later became the FBI, or the “FEDS” as conspiracy theorists like to call them. Moreover, both of these organizations have to give thanks to the National Bureau of Criminal Identification, which helped federalize the search for state-swapping criminals.
#4 Only One Secret Service Member Has Ever Died on Duty You might think that hundreds, possibly thousands of Secret Service agents have died while performing their highly-dangerous duties. However, despite the many assassination attempts that have happened throughout the years, only one agent ever died on the job.  His name was Leslie Coffelt, and he died protecting President Harry Truman on November 1, 1950. Two Puerto Rican extremists invaded Truman’s location (away from the White House while it was under renovation) and tried to shoot him. Coffelt returned fire, but died from his injuries. Unfortunately for Coffelt, Truman felt more pity toward the murderers than the murdered. After the assassination attempt, he commuted the death sentence of the surviving attacker to life in prison. Not even that happened though, as he was later released to return to Puerto Rico. The only person screwed royally here was poor, dead Leslie Coffelt. No wonder the Secret Service continues to pay tribute to the courageous young fellow.
#5 The Secret Service is Not Obligated to Report a Philandering Husband It must be awkward, those conversations between Secret Service men and the President about to get his freak on with some mistress. Ex-Secret Service agents have stated that JFK’s aides would sneak women into the White House for sexual affairs, and that the Secret Service knew about it. In fact, the brave and non-judgmental agents watching Jackie would report back to the President saying Mrs. Kennedy was coming home, so he better hide the toys. Lyndon Johnson, meanwhile, was spoken of even less favorably by the agents, who described him as “uncouth”. The ex-agents interviewed by author Raymond Kessler stated that Lyndon Johnson became incensed at the Secret Service after getting caught red-handed by his wife, and blamed them for not warning him in advance. Johnson got over it, but insisted that the Secret Service make it up to him by installing a buzzer system so that he could always be warned if his wife was approaching.
#6 Clint Hill Was a Real-Life Action Hero Long before Sly Stallone and Jackie Chan were doing their own stunts, Secret Service agent Clint Hill was jumping onto moving cars and guarding the President with his body. He was even a reality TV celebrity of the worst variety, if you count the notorious Zapruder film. He was the man famously seen running from the car behind a wounded John F. Kennedy and leaping onto the back of it. After the shooting, Hill jumped out of his car riding and boarded Kennedy’s, guiding the First Lady back to her seat and placing his body above her and the President, ready to take another bullet. To this day, the Secret Service expresses shame about their failure to protect JFK’s life, but they always speak highly of Clint Hill’s quick thinking and bravery. Hill, however, is much less proud, and never forgave himself for allowing the President to die.
#7 Ronald Reagan Packed as Much Heat as His Agents Ronald Reagan’s not a liberal favorite, but conservatives continue to adore his memory, in no small part because the man was a regular Dirty Harry when it came to protecting himself. Secret Service agents have said that Reagan once came out of his room, in front of the Secret Service, with a pistol tucked on his hip. When asked about it, Reagan said, “In case you boys can’t get the job done, I can help.” Perhaps Reagan watched the film of his own attempted assassination once or twice, and decided that no matter what, there would be no sequel. The Secret Service even admitted that Reagan carried a pistol when he first met Mikhail Gorbachev. And despite the notoriety of the NRA, Reagan was a proud member.  Yes, Reagan was strongly in favor of the Brady Bill and the seven-day waiting period for new gun purchases. That didn’t make him any less of a badass. It just made him a responsible one.
#8 The Secret Service Still Investigates Counterfeiters Yes, all these years later, the Secret Service is still active in federal investigations, including its original mission: investigating fraud and counterfeiting.  The protection of the President is simply one additional job the organization takes on. So even though Presidents constantly harass the Secret Service and make them install wife-alarms and what not, these guys are actually doing us a lot of good. They execute stings against malicious hackers and handle cases involving forgeries of American checks and wire fraud. They also very actively combat that whole Nigerian Prince scam thing, because some folks actually continue to fall for them. Americans lose over $100 million per year by sending their financial information to Sir Baldour Dogooder III or whatever they call themselves these days. It’s such a big problem the Secret Service has actually set up a headquarters in Nigeria, to help combat the cyber-crime right at the source.
#9 They Protected Obama for 18 Months Prior to Election Barack Obama knows he and George W. Bush are notoriously unpopular, which is probably why Obama reversed a 1994 Congress ruling that said Presidents elected after 1997 would only receive ten years of protection after relinquishing their post. This would have made Obama and Bush the ONLY Presidents in history that didn’t have lifetime Secret Service protection. It was also a smart move by Obama to accept the Secret Service’s offer of protection a year and a half before Election Day 2008 — the earliest bout of protection for any candidate in history. Not only did it help keep away all the racist, MURCA-loving, would-be assassins who wanted him dead, but it also made him seem like the odds-on favorite to win the election. No wonder Bush is so chummy with Obama. The man literally saved W’s behind by reinstating lifetime Secret Service protection for him too.
#10 A Bunch of Secret Service Agents Had Their Own Sexy Entourage Perhaps taking a few life lessons from philanderer Lyndon Johnson, some good old boys from the Secret Service became embroiled in their own sex scandal in 2012. According to the dismissed agents, the Secret Service has long “tolerated loose guidelines” as long as these quickie relationships (many of which were adulterous) ended whenever the agency left the city. Once exposed, the scandal resulted in rumors of a “Secret Circus”, a group of wild and horny Secret Service agents that would come into town looking for easy fun. Relationships were broke, agents were fired, and the old “I didn’t know she was a prostitute!” excuse was repeated often. The dismissed agents’ sexual dalliances are on record but, to this day, the Secret Service denies everything, claiming they do not tolerate anything “unbecoming of a Secret Service employee.” Perhaps they should though. Maybe if guys like these were in charge of handling Johnson’s needs, maybe he wouldn’t have been so damn cranky.
