The Best Fantasy Graphic Novel since "The Sandman"
This is a genius imagining of the prequel to and "behind-the-scenes" of JM Barrie's classic, with more than a small bow to underground comics and Charles Dickens. Fantastic art and storytelling, dark and more than a little shocking, but it all makes so much sense in terms of what the personalities in the story we know become. Loisel gives these characters more depth and sorrow than anything I've seen in comics in decades, I'd say since the Gaiman "Sandman" series. One walks away feeling they know these characters as people for the first time, complete with flaws and simply awful secrets. It is NOT for kids, adults only for sure. But, wow: if someone isn't making this into a film, they should!

The French have been producing some amazing cartoonists for years. Loisel follows in that grand tradition. This is cartoon storytelling at it's best. Although, one of the darkest versions of the Pan, it is also one of the most fulfilling.

Awesome work by Regis Loisel! I recently found this guy and I'm glad I did! I cannot get enough of his art! In this particular book, the cartooniness of his art and the depravity of the characters makes for an interesting contrast. Yeah, this definitely ain't the Disney version---I never read the original story so I don't know how close it is to that, but I sort of doubt it was quite this dark. I could easily be wrong, though. I just know there are some shocking scenes in this book, so be forewarned! Not for little kids, as much as they would love the artwork. And there is a lot to love!
