Gor bless you @clottedcreamfudge for the tag even though I know my bookshelves physically pain you <3. (I don't organise them or code them in any way. When I had an operation in 2021 and had to be away from home for two weeks my partner said they would miss me but would use the time to eat all the stuff I can't, and put the bookshelves to rights).

Gossip from the Forest by Sara Maitland The book I picked for my Waterstones interview, where the task was 'find your favourite book in the shop and tell us why it's your favourite'. I am a big folklore gal, and this reimagines fairytales with a particular emphasis on the natural woods of the UK and elsewhere in Europe. She has an intriguing take on the themes of getting lost in German and English folktales.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke I was going to say Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell for this, but I think Piranesi is a superior plot. It gives you the world and no guidebook. I adore the entries, I love the mystery.

Watching the English by Kate Fox Kate Fox is an anthropologist and the quirks of British life are wonderfully explained in this non-fiction guide to the strange island I call home. I like having social norms spelled out, too. (It's the autism).

Persuasion by Jane Austen "She was only Anne". I love a bit of second chance romance, the letter is one of the most beautifully grovelly things I've read, I'm absolutely here for a spinster being allowed to have another shot at the kind of life she wants.

Circe by Madeline Miller The book so beautiful I wanted to have the part about Daedalus as a reading at my wedding. Alas, it's way too short.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell I've never met a book before or since which so accurately describes what it's like to be in fandom and a fic-writer. Kept having to stop reading it to calm down.

Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett This book has everything. Time travel. Chocolate. A budding romance. Death. All Death and Witches books count for this, just so you know.

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston More time-travel! Living in a shitty place in New York but with found family. The magic of city travel. Finding love in unexpected places, decades apart. Their best book to my mind, even though RWRB gets all the love.

The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman Cheating to have a series, fully don't give a shit. Death influenced my personal style for a long, long time. It's so layered - you can read it time after time and go 'oh, underneath the thing about Shakespeare and Fae and child death there's Hobbesian philosophy'. I had quotes from this painted on my bedroom wall.

Josephine Goube is a European entrepreneur she works for a non-profit, that is involved in empowering displaced women. For the past 12 years, she is been leading different organizations for social causes with human-centered purposes. Josephine Goube is the CEO of Sistech, founded in 2017. Sistech is a European non-profit company that empowers women refugees through access to tech and digital jobs. Josephine Goube was born and brought up in France her education began in a French institution and her higher education was done at the Paris Institute of Political Studies from 2006 to 2010. Her early life and education led to her interest in social and humanitarian work. Her research on social advocacy and urban planning led to her career in solving social problems.

Initially, she did an internship in advertising in New York while a master’s degree in LSE, and then from 2010 to 2016 she collaborated with Migrate, a start-up that helps people in applying visa for France, the UK, Germany, etc. In 2013 she was Co-Directing manager of Girls In Tech UK for empowering girls in technology. She was interested in guiding people on visas, the website had a traffic of 2 million visitors a month. In 2014 she found visitors looking for asylum status who were travelling from Syria to Europe. She thought about the people who were displaced as not their fault.

Then she met an editor in Europe, and both decided to solve the issues that is when The Techfugees organization was founded in September 2015, it is a global organization that uses tech solutions to support the displaced people. Goube is the CEO of The Techfugees and contributes to the success of the organization which has volunteers from 10 countries across five continents that aims to help suffering refugees with technology and their fulfillment. It also brings 18 cities across the world together with engineers, start-ups, NGOs, etc to empower the humanitarian sector using technology.

Later Goube continued her career in Sistech as CEO from 2018 till the present date, even she is playing a vital role in helping displaced women by qualifying them to grab tech and digital jobs. She conducted many programs and campaigns under her leadership one of them was the #TF4Women program in 2018. This was aimed, at the integration of refugee women in tech and digital jobs to help and up-bring their lives. In 2021 #TF4Women program was expanded to many countries and was able to serve four times women than before.

Recognition and awards

Josephine is been honored with many awards for her social work. She was awarded with Les Margaret Award for the year 2017-18 as a founder of The Techfugees. She is also known as “Women at the Top” in the UK by Marie Clarie for her success and boldness in 2015. She was on the list of Forbes 30 for 3 times and by Management Today she is named one of the “35 Women Under 35”.

Josephine from 2018 is one of the board members of the Norwegian Refugee Council. She served as an expert advising the European Commission on migration reforms regarding the Blue Cards from 2015 to 2020. Since 2022 she has been a Schmidt Futures fellow. She is also a fellow member of institutions like the New Entrepreneurs Foundation, Schmidt Futures, and the Royal Society of Arts.

This new system, a major project for the MTA, rolled out on the Canarsie (L) line in 2009, the Flushing (7) line in 2018, and the Queens Boulevard (E, F, M, R) lines starting in 2021 [1].

Using the previous system, known as ‘fixed block’ signaling, the train tracks on a given line are divided into stationary blocks to keep trains a safe distance apart [2]. When the equipment on the tracks senses that a train has passed a block, the block is considered ‘occupied’, and no other trains can enter. Two additional ‘buffer’ blocks of safe distance are added behind the train, so that crashes can be prevented. This signaling system is still in use across much of the subway system, but it comes with many drawbacks. For one, most of the system’s signals were installed in the 1930s, meaning that tower operators must manually signal to train drivers that their block is clear so that they can move forward. For another, beyond whether or not a block is occupied, tower operators do not know the precise location of trains or their speed. If these details were known, the space between trains could theoretically be decreased to a minimum safe buffer distance in order to offer more trains per hour to customers on busy lines. With today’s computational power, the MTA is able to use CBTC to accomplish just that.

CBTC is a closed-loop control system, which takes as input the location of two trains relative to each other, their directions of travel, and their speeds. This is accomplished by detection using transponder interrogator antennas (TIAs) under the train, which communicate with other transponders mounted on the tracks. The MTA has touted many benefits to riders of the CBTC system, including more trains per hour, better on-time performance, and faster speeds. However, the installation of the CBTC equipment required to sense trains has come at a cost to New York State taxpayers, and has resulted in many recent disruptive service outages on the lines where it is being added. In my opinion, CBTC is a welcome addition to the technology powering the NYC subway, and will certainly be appreciated in time by a city full of commuters looking to get around faster.
