Day 3: A plate of “Majestic Mushrooms” (my dinner from Day 2, not the “magic” variety) brought lucky number day three to me, and I was far from “majestic” for it. Alas, the dreaded “Bali Belly” befell me and my excitement over the fresh food morphed into what I can only describe as pure misery. You see, “Bali Belly” is basically just an awful case of food poisoning. With the heat and a lacking in necessary resources for refrigeration (sometimes), even the most reputable of restaurants in the area can leave you out-for-the-count and I was no exception. For some background here, I do have a sensitive stomach but that kind of illness is very rare for me. I’m not ashamed to say that I was beyond grateful to have my mother here to nurse me back to health. I’ll save you the gory details, but I’m lucky that it happened on a day off, as the healing process certainly took a full 24 hours. I’m right as rain now, I’m happy to say. Woke up ready to get to work to a sunny 6:30am, which brings me to…. Day 4: Dewa picked us up at 9am. He’s quite the character and I like to think that we are fast friends, even if he doesn’t know it yet. Dewa is our driver, our bodyguard, our guide, our translator, our jokester, and all-around Bali-Guru. In a world that is not your own, it is beyond helpful to have someone you can trust to “show you the ropes,” especially when corruption over money is far from unheard of. I should note here, that if you do ever travel to Bali that there are people who will take advantage of newcomer/tourist ignorance to the ways of those ravished by poverty. Be wary of where you go to get your money exchanged, and don’t be afraid to haggle or barter with street-side vendors. Make it part of the fun, as we’re all just looking to protect our hard-earned bucks at the end of the day. I should also note here, that if you are looking for someone to help guide you on similar ventures, that Dewa is a true gem, trustworthy and a highly recommended fella. He was recommended to us via our friends mentioned in my last post and I would be more than happy to refer him to fellow travelers and Balinese importers. Just leave us a message on Facebook and let us know! (http://www.facebook.com/omandawayyyc) This brings me to the video posted along with this post. The vigilance of the people in the Balinese peoples never ceases to astound me. As much as there will always be those who work in the ways of dishonesty, there are of course still those whose work-ethic and determination far outweigh those of most anything you will see in the North American world. The women captured in this video we drove by on our way out to our first destination. As Dewa described to us, these women have a very difficult job. We passed them along the winding roads just after the rain began to fall. It is the rainy season here, and they’ve seen more rain here than usual. Landslides from the rain have already claimed several victims, including children. (Source: http://thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2017/02/10/twelvr-dead-landslide-bali-village/) Despite all this, these women get up and walk down to the rivers. They then collect river stones and rock to bring them back up to sell, balanced atop their delicate heads, their strong and determined necks. Rocks are used for building homes, roads, etc. Each of these baskets will only pay them roughly 5,000 Rupiah, which converts to roughly 50 cents Canadian. Can you imagine? Rain or shine, these women – without options likes you and I are used to in The First World – they do what they can to make money for their families and their children. And if you look closely at the video, there’s still a smile on the one woman’s face - a lesson in gratitude, if I’ve ever seen one. My heart reeling over this realization, we arrived at a large outdoor warehouse. The woman who guided us through the warehouse of wholesale goods was very kind, very welcoming, and seemingly grateful to have us in her store. I believe she may have been named Yuliani, but I may be mistaken. (Translation isn’t always easy and my Bahasa Indonesian is weak at best.) This is where we acquire our statue goods: our yoga ladies, the Buddha statues, our stepping-stones, and all that is cement and CRC (Concrete Resin Composite – way easier on the back than cement). After a year of working with my Mother peddling her wares on the Canadian street-side markets and at my Grandmother’s Garden in Lloydminster, to see where they came from was truly inspiring. What artwork! Oh, if only I could take it all home and decorate all of the gardens that I could get my artsy fingers on. After the mugginess of the rain and “mosquito fest” surrounding the waterfall structures at Yuliani’s we were happy to find the Sterling Silver wholesale room to be air conditioned and bug-free. Lucky-for-us all the exciting jewels distracted us from the itchy bug bites! One of our more popular jewelry items from last year were the Harmony Balls, and I was “pleased as punch” to find that they had some new varieties in stock at our Sterling Silver wholesaler. Did we get any, you ask? I guess you’ll have to follow our Facebook page to find out! (Teehee) In any case, I would like to leave you for this evening (or morning, depending on what side of the world you’re on) with a little tidbit on the cultural background of these special little silver gems. As it turns out, Harmony Balls occur throughout a variety of cultures: Mexico (Bola), Celtic (Druid), or – of course – Bali (Harmoni). In Bali, these sterling silver, hollowed pendants typically carry a small bell-like item that will softly chime as they sway from a long chain. Traditionally, Harmony Balls would be worn by pregnant women to promote a state of “harmony.” They chime against the swollen belly of a woman who is expecting a newborn child when worn with a long chain, said to soothe the child inside. Often times, women might wear them on shorter chains while breast-feeding, as then the child – now freed from the womb – can again listen to the soft chimes while they receive all the important nutrients from their mothers so that they can grow to be healthy young children. Of course, Harmony Balls are not only for pregnant women these days – although the tradition is a beautiful reminder of the connection between mother and child. Nowadays, they are gaining more popularity and come in many different styles, colors, gemstone varieties and sizes. With the stresses of the modern world’s day-to-day, I’d say we could all use a little more “harmony” in our lives. Chime away, dear readers. Don’t forget to allow for a little of your own harmony today and thank you for reading. (Source: Mike O’Shannesy http://harmonyballs.blogspot.co.id/) Like what you read? Greenland's Coastal Ice Passed a Climate Tipping Point 20 Years Ago, Study Says by Bob Berwyn

Faster-than-expected melting of Greenland's ice fields is worrisome news for the fate of the larger ice sheet, and subsequent sea level rise.
Ice caps and glaciers along the coast of Greenland passed a tipping point in 1997, when a layer of snow that once absorbed summer meltwater became fully saturated. Since then, the coastal ice fields—separate from the main Greenland Ice Sheet—have been melting three times faster than they had been, according to a new study published Friday in the journal Nature Communications.
"The melting ice caps are an alarm signal for the ice sheet. It means long-term ice mass loss is inevitable. It will increase and accelerate if nothing changes," said lead author Brice Noël, a scientist at the  University of Utrecht Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. "It's very unlikely the ice caps will recover. It's a climate tipping point—the time at which a change or an effect cannot be stopped."
Climate scientists are wary of tipping points, when a series of small changes make a much larger change inevitable. The fear is a total meltdown of the Greenland Ice Sheet, which would raise global sea level by 24 feet, Noël said. Overall, the rate of ice sheet melting is accelerating, according to peer-reviewed studies cited in the most recent Arctic report from NOAA.
"On a warming planet, there will be less snow and more rain. That will limit the formation of healthy snow that could absorb the runoff in summer. Additional melt will just run off toward the ocean, raising sea level," he said. "What we saw there in normal conditions, before 1997, is that the snow was able to absorb most of the melt and then refreeze. So the melting was not contributing to sea level rise before 1997, even though warming was already ongoing."
The new study, which included scientists from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and the United States, focused on coastal ice caps and glaciers at 12 locations around Greenland, tracking the melt-freeze cycle from 1958 to 2015. The sites represent a total of 38,000 square miles of ice, a little larger than Indiana.
The ice fields are Earth's largest glaciers apart from the ice sheets on Greenland and Antarctica. The study found most of the fields are likely to melt by 2100, raising global sea level by about 1.5 inches. All the ice caps at the 12 study sites have been losing mass since 1997, with increases in meltwater runoff varying from 17 percent in the south to 74 percent in the northernmost area.
Ohio State University glaciologist and co-author Ian Howat said the study provides new evidence of how rapid climate change happens. Since the tipping point was reached in the late 1990s, before the recent spike in global warming, it suggests the ice along the edge of Greenland is particularly sensitive to temperatures, he said.
Howat provided an ice mapping model that detailed the surface and exact boundaries of the glaciers, showing exactly where and how the ice caps and glaciers melted during the study period. He said the main Greenland Ice Sheet faces a similar danger, but not as soon because of its vast mass.
Utrecht University researcher Bert Wouters found that data closely matched observations from the European Space Agency's CryoSat-2 satellite. The measurements showed that, for the last 20 years, mass loss has been exactly equal to the amount of meltwater runoff lost to the sea, crucial information for scientists trying to project future sea level rise.
University of Colorado at Boulder scientist Mike MacFerrin, who has spent several field seasons studying the melting ice, said the trend is headed in the same direction for the main Greenland Ice Sheet. "I would anticipate that if we continue warming, we would reach this same sort of tipping point," he said. In a paper published in January, MacFerrin documented how surface water runoff increased as layers of firn atop the ice sheet became more saturated.
Marco Tedesco, an Arctic researcher at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said the new study's conclusions were not surprising. The mid-90s saw significant shifts in many Arctic systems that affect Greenland's ice, he said, including changing ocean currents and decreasing reflectivity of the surface of the ice sheet.
"Things really changed in the way the snow captured water, and the runoff increased. The new study is a huge help to project what's going to happen on the Greenland ice sheet in the future," he said.

The International Blog by John Rodgers (Updated: Monday 30th October 2017 @ 15:50)
A good attendance at sunny Dalziel Park on Sunday for the International trial match with players old and new attending from all over the country.
After a serious warm-up the players were split into two squads, with Bruce McNaught taking the BLUE team while Colin MacLeod took the more establish players that were nominated to the YELLOW’S.
The game its self was spilt into 3 half-hour sections to give Bruce and Colin opportunity to fine tune their groups tactics as required and also give the players at least an hour of football.
The Blue team looked the more likely in the opening stages and in the 26th minute took a deserved lead when Steven Currie stroked the ball home with some style. As expected the Yellow team reacted in a positive manner and 10 minutes later Billy Caryl equalized with a powerful blast that gave the keeper no chance to save.
Colins team would then forge ahead when Paul McCracken stole the lead (Bruce McNaughts opinion) after the hour mark. However, Bruce organized “Fergie Time” with Jonathan Howat forcing the ball over the line just before the final whistle and earn his team an honorable draw, and cheer up the gaffer.
In the end Bruce and his management team were impressed with the energy and commitment of all the players involved and gave them a clear picture of the immerging talent available.
The named players taking part are listed below under Blue or Yellow and in no particular order.
