"Then there was Brian Jones' hair, longer and thicker than anything we'd seen on a man before. The whispered words, 'He looks like a girl!' circulated around the audience, as if that were the worst possible insults."--Marty Clear, audience member at the Mike Douglas Show, 1964
“Daytime Revolution” to Explore John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Week as “Mike Douglas” Co-hosts
- “A prescient blueprint for the future we now live in,” director Erik Nelson says of that week in ’72
A week of 1972 “Mike Douglas Show” episodes co-hosted by John Lennon and Yoko Ono are the basis of a new documentary.
Director Erik Nelson distilled five, 70-minute programs into “Daytime Revolution,” a forthcoming film about the weeklong residency. The archival footage is set alongside new interviews with six surviving guests, including Ralph Nader, Variety magazine reports.
Ono and her son, Sean Lennon, signed off on the project but did not participate.
“It’s become a cliché that Woodstock was the defining moment of the counterculture,” Nelson said.
But, “when I watched these broadcasts in their entirety, I realized that, in reality, this week … was as far as the counterculture would ever get. Not just music but a prescient blueprint for the future we now live in.”
Production of “Daytime Revolution” is complete; Nelson is seeking a distributor.
