"The oppressed internalize the values of the oppressor. Therefore, any group that achieves power, no matter how oppressed, is not going to act differently from their oppressors as long as they have not confronted the values that they have internalized and consciously adopted different values"
~ Grace Lee Boggs
"There is a fine line between conforming to the pressures of oppressive systems to survive and enthusiastically upholding oppressive structures to gain access to the same power. The line can sometimes be frustratingly difficult to discern, but there is a difference, and being able to hold the complexity of both circumstances is instrumental to our ability to course-correct as we go."
~ Michelle Mijung Kim
"And it is worth repeating: when people of color replicate white supremacy culture, intentionally or unintentionally, it is not the same thing as white people perpetuating white supremacy culture."
~ Michelle Mijung Kim
For people doing work in social justice, these ideas are important to understand. We need to address systemic issues. This doesn't mean all groups are equally marginalized and that we don't have to do more work in some areas because certain people have suffered unspeakable harm and abuse. It does mean that in your social justice work, you do not use your power and authority in a way that results in harm to or silences other marginalized people.

"When we take risks and willingly give up our access, resources, privileges, safety, comfort, status, ego and power in serve of equity and justice, we are not only remaining in integrity with ourselves, we are also opening ourselves up for the possibility of deeper and more genuine connections marked by our shared commitment to justice, freedom, and healing."
~ Michelle MiJung Kim, author of The Wake Up: Closing the Gap Between Good Intentions and Real Change
