June 15.
Tour Day 39. My Day 31.
Niles OH to Erie PA
Miles today 105
Feet of ascent today 1998
Totals so far
Total miles 2221
Totals feet of ascent 50263
It was another very hot and very humid day. We were sweating within the first 15 mins as we had a significant climb away from Niles/Warren and the sweating did not stop until the day came to an end. I took a few photos but my main objective was to try to get this ride over efficiently and to minimize my exposure to the blistering heat - but in the end it didn’t work out that way. Anyway we also had several of those long unending straight roads that I’m not too keen on. And the scenery wasn’t quite as captivating as other days in Ohio. However there was a lot of riding on the flat so that part of it was good. Shortly after passing through the town of Conneaut OH with the traditional stop at the White Turkey Diner (“Thanksgiving in a bun”is how I described the pulled Turkey sandwich), we reached the state line and crossed into Pennsylvania. Although it looks on the map that our route took us along the edge of Lake Erie, we were still some considerable distance from the water and never got to see it from that road. We passed by huge evergreen farms that stretched for hundreds of acres (think arborvitae and taxus bushes etc) and also passed by many extensive vineyards. Must be the micro climate created by the lake. Earlier in the day Jason had asked me if I wanted to ride an extra 12 miles or so with him by cycling around the peninsula that sticks into the lake close to our destination town of Erie. I was a bit unsure (running low on energy and supplies at the end of a long ride is problematic and the additional mileage would be significant in the heat and humidity) but he was waiting for me at the appropriate road junction so we parted from our scheduled route and added about 15 miles to our day. The peninsula was very flat and an easy ride but for the fact that we were running low on liquids. Warm Gatorade is not recommended but is better than none I suppose. Anyhow it was very interesting to see the various parts of the peninsula and I’m glad I was able to get that part of the ride completed without any mechanical mishaps. After that we only had 3 miles to cycle to get to our hotel but nearer to town I detoured to Jimmy John’s for a sandwich and vast quantities of Diet Coke. Our hotel is very nice and is located on one of the piers but it is not really an ideal location to find essential bike supplies or stores for restocking our various personal items. Anyhow tomorrow is a well earned rest day which we are all looking forward to.
