Yugi's duel with Mai is an interesting one.(I'm taking about the one in the finals of duelist kingdom) On a surface level, this is the duel that Yugi finally starts trusting Yami in. But if you look deeper, you'll see that this is the start of Yugi's character growth, as well as Atem's.
Atem starts teaching Yugi to trust in himself(although I don't think that it worked, for reasons I'll get to later). We also see Atem voicing his own insecurities. He feels guilty for meddling in the lives of Yugi and his friends, especially when he put all of their fates in one card. Yugi then reassures him that everyone is behind him. I think that that bit was rushed, they probably could have used a few more episodes of Yugi accepting Atem, but not fully trusting him.
Anyways, it's also interesting to see the different levels of desperation in Yami's voice as he tried to get yugi t let him help. He starts with begging, then he adds "everything is riding on us" and finally he gets sincere and apologizes.
And now for the reasons I think that Yugi didn't trust in himself for a while: sure, Yugi began to trust Atem, but it's shown later on the he has a lot of self doubt still. I think that this is because of this duel. He was doing a horrible job until he let Atem take over, and while it was because he wasn't focused, he probably saw it as "I'm not good enough". Atem's pep talks didn't start to take effect until much later, and I think that it's because Yugi saw this duel as evidence that Yami was better.
this duel was also very important to the plot, as this is the moment we start to realize that pegasus had more going on than a spy in the tower.
We also get the privilege of seeing a completely different side of Mai.
All in all, this duel was the groundwork for the relationship between Yugi and Atem, as well as great insight in what was going on in that season.
