Season 01 Episode 00
I Googled the lifespan of parrots the other day. I learned, depending on the species, those birds can live between fifty and a hundred years.
A macaw’s lifespan is from fifty to a hundred years.
A Labrador retriever only lives to be fourteen—if it’s lucky.
What does this mean?
More people should be parrot people.
Before this past summer, I was pet-less for three years. I had watched my cat, Sally Field the Cat, die on a vet’s table in 2015. Life left her little body less than ten seconds after the needle went in. I didn’t cry, but there was a feeling of loss. Actually, the whole pet euthanasia thing is very convenient and affordable. And even though I didn’t pay to keep her ashes, it gave me peace knowing it was an add-on option. As I exited the vet office, the receptionist with tender eyes softly said, “I’m so sorry for your loss.” I just nodded and left. I crossed the small parking lot and stopped at the wooden fence by my car. I lit a cigarette while facing the empty field that neighbored the clinic and I calmly called my wife.
“She’s gone,” I said the moment Jen answered. I told her how weird it is to watch an animal quit living and also talked about how reasonably priced the vet visit was. We were sad, but maybe more so we were relieved. Sally Field was sick all of the time. I had been to the vet at least twenty times over her last year. It was time.
Last summer I wanted two cats. My wife did not. She liked not having cats. Loved it, actually. We all have things we hate with a passion. I hate cold weather with a passion; Jen hates keeping a toilet box in her house with a passion.
We talked about a parrot. Well, I talked about a parrot. “Birds are weird,” she said. “I want a dog.”
We became dog people.
In July 2018, we adopted Bacon. We will never go back.
I have had many animals throughout my life. The members of my family were pet people: cats, rats, Guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, birds, squirrels, turtles, and dogs—Many, many, dogs. I hope you enjoy Pets. Next week - we begin with a dog. The first dog. Good ole Mutley.

Live Update: Dustin Johnson reclaims No. 1 ranking with Memphis win
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Dustin Johnson emphatically reclaimed the No. 1 ranking Sunday, holing out for eagle from 170 yards on the final hole for a six-stroke victory in the St. Jude Classic.
Johnson shot a 4-under 66 for his second PGA Tour victory this year and 18th of his career to take back the No. 1 ranking he held for 64 straight weeks before dropping down a month ago. He won the event for the second time, finishing with the eagle, three birdies and a bogey for a 19-under 261 total.
Andrew Putnam started the final round with a share of the lead for the first time in his career. He shot 72 and finished at 13 under.
Article continues below …
Preparing for the U.S. Open, Johnson took the lead to himself with a par on No. 1, while Putnam double-bogeyed, and cruised to the $1.18 million winner’s check. Johnson turned in the lowest score under par by a winner here since David Toms won at 20 under in 2003, and that was before the course was redesigned with par dropped from 71 to 70 after the 2004 tournament.
Johnson, who won the U.S. Open in 2016, heads to Shinnecock Hills after stringing together four straight rounds in the 60s. He went 67, 63 and 65 before wrapping up a final round that felt almost like a practice round with the only question remaining how low Johnson would go.
At least until his dramatic walk-off eagle. Johnson was in the intermediate rough to the right of the fairway, and the ball bounded twice before rolling into the cup.
CURTIS CUP
SCARSDALE, N.Y. (AP) – Kristen Gillman led a U.S. singles sweep Sunday in the biggest blowout in Curtis Cup history.
Gillman, the 20-year-old University of Alabama star from Austin, Texas, beat 16-year-old Annabell Fuller 5 and 4 to cap a perfect weekend at Quaker Ridge in the amateur competition.
The Americans won 17-3, breaking the record for margin of victory of 11 set in a 14 1/2-3 1/2 victory at Denver Country Club in 1982. They improved to 29-8-3 in the series, rebounding from a loss in 2016 at Dun Laoghaire in Ireland.
Gillman, the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, joined American Stacy Lewis (2008) and England’s Bronte Law (2016) as the only players to go 5-0-0 since the format was changed to three days in 2008.
Sophia Schubert, the Texas senior and 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, started the singles rout with a 2-and-1 victory over Olivia Mehaffey. In the other matches, top-ranked Lilia Vu defeated Sophie Lamb 2 up; Jennifer Kupcho, the NCAA individual winner this year for Wake Forest, beat Lily May Humphreys 2 and 1; Andrea Lee edged Alice Hewson 2 and 1; Lauren Stephenson beat Shannon McWilliam 2 and 1; 15-year-old Lucy Li defeated India Clyburn 5 and 4; and Mariel Galdiano held off Paula Grant 1 up.
The U.S. won all five sessions for the first time, and every American earned at least two points.
LPGA TOUR
GALLOWAY, N.J. (AP) – Annie Park won the ShopRite LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory, closing with an 8-under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Sakura Yokomine.
The 23-year-old Park, from Levittown, New York, had an eagle and six birdies on a cloudy day over the Bay Course at Stockton Seaview to complete 54 holes at 16-under 197, a stroke off the tournament record.
Yokomine, the winner of 23 events on the Japan LPGA Tour, flirted with a 59 but parred the par-5 18th for a 61 to tie the course record.
New Jersey native Marina Alex was third at 14 under after a 64. She made a hole-in-one at the par-3 17th. Sei Young Kim, who broke the course record Sunday morning when she finished her second round with back-to-back birdies for a 61, had a 70 to finish fourth at 13 under.
Park won the 2013 NCAA individual title as a freshman at Southern California and helped the Trojans take the team crown.
PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Tom Lehman won the Principal Charity Classic when final-round play was washed out at Wakonda Club.
Tournament officials delayed the start of the third round by nearly five hours because of bands of light but persistent rain before calling the event.
The 59-year-old Lehman shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to reach 13 under and take a two-shot lead over Bernhard Langer, Glen Day, Woody Austin and Scott Parel. From neighboring Minnesota, Lehman won for the 11th time on the 50-and-over tour.
EUROPEAN TOUR
ATZENBRUGG, Austria (AP) – Mikko Korhonen of Finland won the inaugural Shot Clock Masters by six strokes for his first European Tour title.
Korhonen closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 16 under. Connor Syme of Scotland, who only turned professional in September, holed a 60-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 69 to finish second. The event was the first on the tour with a 40-second shot clock for most strokes.
WEB.COM TOUR
MUNDELEIN, Ill. (AP) – Chase Wright won the Rust-Oleum Championship for his first Web.com Tour victory, beating Alex Prugh with a birdie on the second extra hole.
The 28-year-old Wright won a week after losing a playoff in a U.S. Open qualifier. He closed with his third staight 4-under 68 to match Prugh at 17-under 281 at Ivanhoe Club.
Wright hit a 7-iron from 170 yards to 5 feet to set up his winning putt.
Prugh shot a 67. Christian Brand was a stroke back after a 70.

Tennis Court Construction Projects are Like a Box of Chocolates
You Never Know the Challenges You’re Going to Get, but Experience Solves Everything
Tennis court construction, pickleball court construction and related projects come with a slew of considerations, including layout and design, site work, drainage, base construction, surface, amenities, innovation and overall end-user experience.
When it comes to tennis court construction and pickleball court construction projects, you never know all the challenges that crop up. But, McConnell & Associates has decades of experience working with a variety of courts and surfaces, as well as solving the challenges they bring, so there’s little that we’ve not dealt with over the years.
The following projects involved irreparable damage, a total repurposing of the courts, adjacency to a pond and ridiculously tight access points. In the end, experience solved for everything and the results are nothing less than impressive.
PROJECT: BELLERIVE COUNTRY CLUB
Bellerive Country Club hosted the PGA Championship in 2018, the 100th year anniversary. The existing facility was used as staging area, which resulted in irreparable damage.
A total tennis facility reconstruction was required. McConnell & Associates was tasked with redesigning within the area of the previous existing facility, consisting of seven clay tennis courts. Coordinating with Club management, McConnell designed and built five hydro court (Clay) tennis courts, a post-tension concrete tennis court, and six post-tension concrete pickleball courts. The playing facility included new walkways, patios, and other amenities. New construction of facilities was done within the same footprint of the prior existing facility.
One of the worst rain seasons on record plagued this tennis court and pickleball construction project. Not only did the weather make the project move slowly, it also brought unforeseen issues to the infrastructure. New drainage systems around the facility were needed and the constant use of pumps were required to keep the project moving forward. It was completed in October, 2019 and managed by Justan Vaughn, a Certified Tennis Court Builder (CTCB).
PROJECT: BOIS D’ARK PARK
Lenexa Parks and Recreation commissioned McConnell & Associates to repurpose four existing tennis court facilities into a new six-court pickleball facility. This pickleball court construction project was unique in how we were able to redesign and use a portion of the existing surface to efficiently construct the new facility. This required a fair bit of creativity and technical experience in order to facilitate.
The site was particularly tight with an existing retaining wall right next to the courts on the north and an existing creek running courtside on the south. Our team had one access point on the east side. We had to plan ahead and work from the farthest point out, back to the access point from the demo stage to the final concrete placement. Once the slabs were in place, accessing the site’s far end to the west was a challenge and time consuming.
With the old courts in place and the new court slabs encapsulating the old court pavement, there was special attention to the demo layout to ensure there was no restriction with the shortening of the new post tension slabs and the old existing asphalt pavement. Foam void forms were installed between the existing asphalt pavement and the thickened edge of the new post tension slabs to prevent restriction.
Mike Mehaffey, Certified Tennis Court and Track Builder, managed this project that was completed in June, 2020.
PROJECT: GARDNER RESIDENTIAL TENNIS COURT
This residential tennis court construction was a special project because it was one where multiple segments of the business got to work on the same location (not at the same time). McConnell was commissioned to install an asphalt driveway throughout customer’s property, along with a high-end tennis court area.
The location of the court was difficult as it was cut out of the side of a hill with a pond at the bottom. A large barn is next to the tennis court. A lot of water has to run around or over the area where we installed the court. This makes quality construction preparation extra critical. Subsurface measurements and the slightest of slopes were both considered carefully. Necessary drainage and surrounding area erosion control were installed in order to add to this picture-perfect residential tennis court and property.
Certified Tennis Court and Track Builder, Mike Mehaffey, managed this project that was completed in July, 2020.
PROJECT: SAR KO PARK
The scope of this project was to take a site with four existing tennis courts and create a multi-use facility with two tennis courts and an inline hockey rink.
Once again, tight access points to the project area increased this project’s difficulty level. Also, the area is located in a valley with a large drainage area just off the surface location. Extra attention was paid to the immediately surrounding area sidewalk and landscaping. The subsurface was raised substantially to give adequate fall throughout the playing surfaces.
Though tricky, our team was excited to work on this site, considering the low number of roller hockey rinks in the area and our company’s close association to the sport. Shortly after the project’s completion the MAC Sports Men’s Ice Hockey Team won another Elite League Championship at Independence Event Center. Not to mention, our own Andy McConnell is the KU Men’s Club Hockey Team’s head coach.
Mike Mehaffey, Certified Tennis Court and Track Builder, managed this project that was completed in June, 2020.

Aunts remember boy killed in suspected DUI crash
LOVELAND, Colo. -- Family members say a 13-year old Loveland boy, who was killed by a suspected drunk driver Friday night, had a zest for life and a love of fishing.
"He was an amazing boy," said Emily Krawczuk, Gavin Myers' aunt. "He would chime in and say some of the most off the wall things and make us laugh."
Krawczuk told Denver7 that Gavin was walking northbound on the west side of N. Wilson Avenue, near Glen Isle Drive, when he was struck by a pickup truck that left the roadway, jumped a curb and drove onto the grass.
Tire marks are still clearly visible on the grass.
"There are no skidmarks," she said. "No sign of even trying to avoid something like this... (Gavin) was in a location, a place where he should have been safe."
Krawczuk said family members always taught Gavin to walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic, so he could "see something coming his way and try to avoid it."
She said her family's grief is compounded knowing that the circumstances were avoidable.
This driver "could have avoided the circumstances by making a different decision that didn't rip this young man out of our life," she said.
Driver Arrested
Loveland Police arrested 47-year old Richard Roy Swanson.  He is now being held for investigation of Vehicular Homicide, Careless Driving Resulting in Death and DUI.
Swanson has a previous driving record.  He was charged with Failure to show Proof, Driving Under Restraint and Expired Temporary Plates in March of 1999.  He pleaded Guilty to a lesser charge.
In December of 1998, he pleaded Guilty to Possession/Display of a Revoked/Altered Registration Plate and Operating a Vehicle w/o Insurance.
In June of 1995, he pleaded Guilty to Operating a Vehicle w/o Insurance.
Family Grieving
Molly Foster, Gavin's other aunt, told Denver7, "I don't have words to express how we are feeling. It's so shocking."
Foster came to the interview wearing Gavin's hat.
"He wore it all the time," she said, choking with emotion. "I wanted to wear it too."
Gavin was apparently wearing a hat the night he was killed.
Investigators spray painted the location where his hat landed on the sidewalk after impact.
Remembering Gavin
Krawczuk said Gavin had a outgoing personality and a great sense of humor.
"He would (imitate) Arnold Schwarzenegger," she said, "Back to the chopper," ha ha ha.  It would drive us kind of crazy, but it was just so funny."
"It was Gavin," Foster said. "He was a bubbly kid.  He never held back with anyone."
Foster told Denver7 that Gavin spent the summer with her side of the family in Iowa last summer.
She took him fishing on the Mississippi River.
"I had to have him hook the worm because I couldn't do it," she said. "He was like, 'No Molly, just give it to me,' and he put it on the hook.
Foster said her nephew gained his love of fishing from his father, Eric.
"He loved coming here to Lake Loveland," she said. "That's why we decided to do the interview here."
Foster said Gavin caught this 20 pound catfish while spending (last) summer in Iowa.
"He loved doing that," she said. "He wanted to be on the river."
When asked if Gavin ever talked about what he wanted to do later in life, Krawczuk said he was focused more on the now.
"He loved playing football. He loved being outdoors, and he loved fishing," she said. "He was fortunate enough to have been fishing with his friends the day of the accident."
"He just wanted to grow up and be an amazing person," she added. "He had the personality and the drive and the will to do that."
Forgiveness
When asked if there was anything else she wanted people to know, Ms. Foster told Denver7, "I don't hate the man (who killed Gavin.) I refuse to have hatred in my heart and I want his family to know that I forgive him.
She added that she was speaking for herself only, not any other family members.
She also said that she wants anyone who walks near traffic to stay focused.
"Don't be looking at your phone," she said. "Keep your eyes on your surroundings."
Memorial Events
A classmate of the victim told Denver7 that friends will gather at Lucille Irwin Middle School in Loveland, at 2:30 on June 13, to sign posters for Gavin's parents, Eric and Melissa.
She said there will be a big event at Noon on July 2, at Mehaffey Park.  That's where friends and loved one will gather for a balloon release and a skating event in remembrance of Gavin.

The Buffalo Green Code
At the end of last year, Buffalo, New York approved the first major overhaul to its zoning code in 63 years old.
It is officially called the Buffalo Green Code Unified Development Ordinance, but, not surprisingly, most people seem to be just calling it the Buffalo Green Code. Its name should give you clues as to what it is trying to accomplish.
Here’s a snippet from a City Journal article by Aaron M. Renn:
The Green Code is a so-called “form-based code,” encouraging mixed uses. Buffalo will be only the third major city in the U.S. to adopt a citywide form-based code. The goal is to encourage development of buildings in a more traditional, Main Street style.
As an older city, Buffalo is already built like this in many areas. But past zoning choices have had lingering negative consequences. “Sixty years ago planners sought to replace the city with a suburban auto-dominated (dominated, not oriented) model,” says Brendan Mehaffey, Buffalo’s executive director of strategic planning. “Most of the city as built was non-conforming with the existing development. Through urban renewal and other programs, planners sought to replace the city’s built environment block-by-block.”
Perhaps one of the most noteworthy changes being ushered in with the Green Code is the complete elimination of parking minimums. This change makes Buffalo the first city in the United States to remove this requirement on a citywide basis.
The Green Code also dramatically simplifies the current code, taking it down from 1,802 pages to 338 pages.
I haven’t yet gone through the Green Code in detail (you can do that here if you’d like). But already other cities are starting to look to Buffalo as a model for how to rewrite their own zoning codes.

Buffalo Rezones Entire City, Eliminates Parking Minimums Citywide
Image via visitbuffaloniagara.com
In my major City Journal feature on Buffalo last year, I mentioned the city’s work on its so-called “Buffalo Green Code” as one of the positive developments to watch.
Last week the city gave final approval to this complete rewrite of the city’s planning and zoning code, and a new land use map for the city. I review the highlights over at City Journal:
As an older city, Buffalo is already built [in an urban form] in many areas.
Buffalo’s new zoning code rejects that mid-century policy in favor of urban infill that matches historic development. The Green Code hopes to promote walkability through street design. The new land-use plan also reflects the realities of deindustrialization and the preferences of today’s residents. As Mehaffey says, “Instead of imagining our waterfront for the production of steel, today we imagine it as a unique environmental resource that adds to the quality of life of residents.” The Green Code is notable for being dramatically simpler than the old code. According to the Buffalo News, the previous code ran 1,802 pages. The new code is only 338 pages—an 80 percent reduction.
