copenhagen fashion week: margit brandt

on the whole, i liked the a/w 2011 margit brandt show at copenhagen fashion week.  it was full of the kind of sophisticated clothes classy career women unlike myself wear to work & play.  i'll even forgive the fact that several of the models, like homegirl below, looked like they'd been out  the previous night selling organs to forgive their family's debt to the vory v zakone and did the show under the threat of having yet another little sister whisked off to a brothel in stockholm if their daddy doesn't check his gambling.  yeesh.  you'd think homegirl would remember she's here to actually sell the clothes. 

anyway, the show, which was scored to the type of jazzy elevator tunes that might have cropped up somewhere on the twin peaks soundtrack, was full of slouchy trousers, pretty little frocks and coats, capes, and cropped smart pinstriped suits, with plenty of wool and deep autumnal colours, like dusty rose, caramel, black, beige, and gray. 

the brand was launched in the mid-sixties, got hot, then petered out, as these things do when they've settled on a particular point to score interest, but it no longer does.  it was re-introduced in 2005 to much fanfare, under the creative direction of margit's daughter, julie brandt dam (i wonder if part of the brand's appeal is in running a company that is stocked with people who sound as though they've had highways & hospitals named after themselves?). 

judging from the collection at hand, julie is designing for women just like herself, and doing a nice job of it.  it had a complete wardrobe of clothes for women who have to rush off to the office after popping into a trendy cafe for a muffin they'll only pick at, and if the relaxed looks were a little young & angry (as above), we'll credit that with the fact homegirl doesn't have much time for doing anything other than working & repeating that little speech back at you.  maybe they should have throw some flannel nighties into the bunch, that she can lounge about, reading her biographies in, before falling asleep on the couch, but then, that would probably stifle the effect.  and the models might get too comfortable.  they've got their daddies' ponies money to earn, after all.
