Kirby found the woman seated in a booth by the door of the little coffee shop in downtown Kepler, just where they had agreed to meet. In the small room, empty but for her and a few of the sleepy town's residents out for lunch, she was easy to spot.
The woman looked, in two words, fancied up. Artificial tan and frosted tips, and cosmetics applied with surprisingly artful hand. She looks just as put together as she did in all the photos he found while researching her story online; the more recent photos, anyway. It was clear she had made special changes in her appearance lately, the way a person does when they are trying to impress a certain someone.
And, Kirby thought, eyeing her tee-shirt which bore the iconic silhouette of Sasquatch on the front, he had a pretty good idea who that someone was.
“Renee?” Kirby asked, shifting his laptop bag under one arm to free his right hand.
She smiled broadly, flashing teeth that matched her french-tipped nails. “Got it in one. You’re the man from the Lamplighter? Kirby?”
They shook hands, exchanging a few more pleasantries as Kirby settled himself across from her. He pulled out his equipment—notepad, pencils, an old-school recorder.
“I ordered a pot of coffee,” Renee was saying, “just before you got here. We can have the waitress bring another mug for you, if you’d like?”
“Yeah, sounds fine. The food isn’t the greatest here, honestly, but it makes for a quiet place to meet. Do you mind if we get started right away?”
Renee’s eyes were all but sparkling with eagerness. “Absolutely not!”
“Right.” He cleared his throat, and switched on his recording. “I’m sitting with Renee Lesky, the former stay-at-home mother of two, and current Bigfoot enthusiast.”
“I prefer cryptid activist,” she interrupted.
“Of course. Renee, your life, uh, has taken a significant change in the last several months. You’ve already discussed this with other...news outlets, but if you don’t mind, could you explain for our readers how that all started? What set you to become a...an activist?”
She leaned forwards, hands clasped under her chin. Kirby could have sworn she was pausing for dramatic effect, and he made a note to work that in somehow when he wrote this whole thing up. In a voice heavy with importance, Renee said into the recorder, “ I met Bigfoot.”
“She’s loony-tunes.”
Kirby double-clicked his pen, held at the ready over his notebook. “Is that your professional opinion?” he asked, eying Ranger Newton.
Behind his desk, the man was scowling up a storm, and that expression was only made worse by the dark, heavy bags under his eyes and the patches of scruff on his typically clean-shaved face. It didn’t take an investigative journalist to see that the man was in a bad mood, and probably had been for at least a few days.
If he would have known the Newton would be like that, Kirby would have stopped by the ranger shack another day. He had been tempted to just leave when he first arrived, but it had been weeks since he first tried to get a few answered questions out of him about the Lesky-Bigfoot situation, and this could be his only chance to corner the man. Even all his wheedling at Ned Chicane, who was friends with Newton, hadn’t been enough to help arrange a meeting.
“Professionally,” Newton said, “the parks department respectfully disagrees with Ms. Lesky’s enthusiastic but ill-informed beliefs.”
“Uh-huh.” Kirby jotted that down. Shame. He might still work in the phrase loony-tunes and figure out a way to give the same punch without truly being a quote.
Frankly, Kirby had to agree with his original assessment. Renee was at best overly enthusiastic, at worst...well. There was a word for people who called furred creatures “majestic” in such breathless tones. But, Kirby was used to the crazies and the frauds and the “enthusiastic, but ill-informed”—he had built the Lamplighter on not only working with them, but preaching to them.
No, he wasn’t bitter about that. Yes, there might have been a time when he once believed the wild stories told by people just like he had become, but he was older now. Kirby had accepted the cold, hard, cryptid-less facts of reality.
“Ms. Lesky says that the parks department denies it was a cryptid. Is that right?”
“Yeah, we do.”
“So, what do you think that is in her footage?”
“It was a bear. I told Ms. Lesky that, just as I’m tellin' you now, just as I’ll tell anyone else who comes ‘round here asking.”
Kirby glanced down at highlighted note from his interview with Renee. “She claims that the parks service won’t admit she capture footage of a bigfoot because, quote, ‘the government is conspiring to control, both the knowledge available to folks and this majestic being living out in the wilds of Kepler.’ End quote.”
Newton stared at him.
Kirby threw up on hand. “Her words! The Lamplighter does not endorse those views.”
“Right.” He leaned forwards and rested his arms on the desk, his chair squeaking under him. “I can safely promise you, Mr. Kirby, that I am not a part of any government conspiracy. And I’m for sure not following government orders to hide animals from the public.
“I have an appreciation for flora and fauna—they’re precious things, and with the dangers facing their dwindling numbers, no on would be more happy to discover new critters runnin’ around in the woods than me or my fellow rangers. I would love it if this were somethin’ other than your average black bear. But it ain’t.”
He rose from the desk, and although Duck Newton wasn’t a tall man, he had this presence that seemed to loom over the room. It was unsettling. Kirby tried not to squirm in his seat.
Newton reached behind him to grab the hat hung from a row of hooks on the wall, then stepped towards the door. “Now, if you’ll excuse me Mr. Kirby, as delightful as this has been, I’m scheduled for patrol right ‘bout now.”
Kirby tucked away his notebook and stood. “Right. If you see anything strange out there, you know who to call,” he joked.
Newton smiled serenely. “I do believe I do.”
As the afternoon slowly turned towards the cool of evening, Kirby retreated to the Cryptonomica and its modem. Stepping inside the shop was almost worse than the muggy summer outdoors had been. Last month, the AC had quit, and Ned Chicane was still figuring out a way to get it fixed without spending the money it would cost. None of the windows could open all the way. And even when they did manage to slide one up an inch, letting in a faint trickle of air, that only managed to stir up the dust that seemed to perpetually coats the racks and displays inside. It stuffy, hot, smelt of old taxidermy, and all around uncomfortable.
But, there was internet and a steady supply of caffeinated beverages. Kirby could make do.
He pulled out his notes from the interview with Newton. It was probably for the best that he hadn’t been able to convince the ranger to let him record the meeting; there hadn’t been anything sensational, anyway, and this way he wouldn’t have to re-listen to and transcribe half-an-hour of audio.
Spreading his material out on the little corner table he had claimed as his station, he set to work. The Lamplighter blog didn’t need an update until Monday, but if he wanted to have the edition out for sale in the store, he would need to turn the copy in bright and early Friday morning. Which was tomorrow.
Well, he had at least six hours.
Behind him, there was a muffled thump and rustling, then the squeak of an unoiled door and heavy footsteps. He didn’t need to turn to know that it was Ned Chicane, emerging from his “secret” back room with what the shopkeeper probably imagined was an air of mystery.
“Ah, you’ve returned from your journalistic pursuits, I see.”
“Yep,” Kirby answered, popping the last syllable. He didn’t look up from his work.
“Are...you still doing that piece about the old bat with the, uh, thing for our legendary friend?”
“Mmhm. Same as I have for the past month.”
“Oh, yes. I haven’t forgotten! I just...wondered, I suppose, if you had changed your mind about using that particular set of events.”
Kirby typed the last few words of a sentence, letting his fingers hit the keyboard with a series of hard click-clacks . Then he paused. He ran a hand through his hair as he turned, and he eyed Ned. Who was leaning against the counter in his usual get-up (loud suit, bolo tie), with his usual showman’s smile on his face. Except, there was a trace of anxiety lining his face, faint enough that Kirby almost missed it, and that betrayed the whole look.
“What’s up, Ned?” Kirby sighed. “You’ve been pussy-footing around this story since I discovered it. And now you want me to trash it the night before I need it?”
Ned shifted on his feet. “I didn’t say that precisely, but, well, if you decided to...”
“Ned.”
He dithered for a moment, moving from the counter to toy with a few of the knickknacks lining the surfaces of the store. “It is a bit of a hot-bed topic isn’t it?”
“How’d you mean?”
“As I understand it, there are accusations at the state government. I shouldn’t think the Lamplighter, or the business that graciously hosts your fine press, would want to be associated with those.”
Of course. With all the bits and pieces he had gathered about Ned Chicane’s none-too-pristine history, it wasn’t surprising that he would be concerned about drawing government attention. A chuckle escaped Kirby. “It’s conspiracy theories, Ned. Just...all this—“ he gestured broadly, swooping arms over the cluttered storefront “—on a political level. Folks’ll eat it up, and those who aren’t already interested won’t pay it any mind.”
He didn’t appear convinced.
“Look, if you’re that nervous, I’ll be careful with my wording. Or put a disclaimer with the article, or something. But this the kinda thing the people who buy my magazine want to hear about, and I can’t just not ignore it.”
Bigfoot, as cliche as that particular cryptid was, had become a major selling point for not only the Lamplighter and the Cryptonomica, but the town of Kepler as a whole. It had been sometime since Kirby had first leaked that video Ned had faked (which Kirby was still impressed with the quality of), and even now, tourists would make a visit simply because they had watched “Bigfoot wrestles monster wildcat REAL!!” on YouTube.
Ned made a thoughtful noise, and stared at a spot on the wall over Kirby’s head while his brow furrowed deeper. Just as he looked about to respond, the bell over the entrance jingled. And in rushed a large bear of a man—larger even than Ned—all stomping boots and frantic calls.
“Ned! You gotta talk to—“
His eyes landed on Kirby, tucked away in the almost-hidden corner of the room, and the man jerked to a stop. His words cut off sharply, and the man began to stumble, apparently having tripped over his feet. His arms windmilled, as Ned stepped forwards to help him catch his balance.
“Barclay!” Ned boomed, a little too jovial to be sincere. “How wonderful to see you here, right now!”
“Um, thanks.” The man—Barclay—glanced back towards Kirby again. “Ah. Um. Hi, um.”
“Hey,” Kirby said, with an uncertain wave.
Barclay turned back to Ned. “Can I...talk with you privately?”
And that was Kirby’s cue to turn back to his computer and ignore the whole deal. Ned was up to something shady; water was wet, more news at eleven. As curious as he might be about...whatever it was that was going on, the less he knew about Ned’s back-door business, the more he could deny involvement in when the cops showed up.
The two murmured in low, indiscernible tones for a few moments, while Kirby pointedly did not try to listen. Before long, Ned spoke up and announced that he would be going out for a bit.
Kirby smiled politely. “Sure thing. I’ll keep an eye on the place while I’m here.”
They left, quickly, and Kirby caught Barclay glancing at him a few times as the two headed out the door. Weird, but—Kirby shook his head, rising to grab a can from the vending machine. Ned’s definitely-illegal shenanigans were his own problem, and Kirby had an article to write.
“Looks like your fangirl is talking again.”
A copy of the Lamplighter slapped on the table. Loudly. Three of the four people gathered around the table jumped, then all shrunk under the glare Mama directed at them.
The Pine Guard—the vital line of defense protecting the alliance between Earth and Sylvan, ensuing the harmony and safety of both worlds—had been rounded up like a group children called the the principal’s office.
Mama leaned against the table, still glaring. “And let’s pray you haven’t got a reporter fanboy now.”
Barclay was not having a very good day. Or week. Or month. The last four months, actually, had not been especially wonderful. Somehow, everything was managing to grow worse and worse.
He glanced at the Zine, then began studying the grain in the table intently. The copy had landed cover up, and out from the grainy still-photo stared a familiar, fur-covered figure. He remembered the moment. The image didn’t fully capture the shock and horror he had felt, or the panicked way he had tried fall behind a tree for cover.
“What were you doing?” Aubrey asked. Barclay didn’t look, but he could imagine her leaning over the table and peering at the picture with delight.
“Yes,” Mama snapped. “What were you doing?”
Barclay dared a peek up, just enough to see her arms folded disapprovingly across her chest. “It...the crane position,” he muttered, and instantly regretted it. Exercise—he should have just said exercise .
“And you needed to do this undisguised? Outside? Where God an’ every hiker with a smartphone can see you?” Mama demanded, at the same time Aubrey hooted, “ Nude yoga? ”
Well. This was the moment he would die. He had always hoped he would go out in some brave way, in the line of duty for the Pine Guard, but apparently whatever deity was out there had a cruel, cruel sense of humor.
Barclay hunched into his shoulders. If only, he wished he wished desperately, he could snap his fingers, like he was Aubrey doing a magic show. A cloud of smoke, and, poof, he would make himself and this whole situation disappear.
“It wasn’t like that,” he muttered, for all the good that might do.
Someone snorted—Ned, probably, since it didn’t sound like Aubrey, and Duck had seemed less amused by the situation than the other two. Barclay ducked his head lower.
“You,” Mama hissed, voice like a sharped, swinging scythe. “Ned Chicane. Care to explain how this ended up not only published and for sale in your store, but on the front page?”
Ned defended himself, claiming it would have been more suspicious if he had refused to let Kirby print that. He went on, but Barclay was doing his best to block out the rest of the meeting. Duck spoke up, at one point, saying he’d do his best to keep Renee Lesky from raising too much trouble, but that she seemed determined enough to take extreme measures.
Extreme measures . Barclay hoped that meant she would continue trying to spread her story, and not that the woman would take to wandering the wilds of the Monongahela, calling for him.
“It’ll blow over soon,” Ned insisted.
“Better hope so!” Mama hit her palm against the table, and Barclay jolted straight. She sighed, and finally sank into a chair, massaging her forehead. “Y’all just gonna need to be extra careful from now on— Extra. Careful . Ya hear me?”
“Yes’um,” the four chorused as one.
“And Aubrey, you’re in charge of spreading that to the rest of the Lodge. We don’t need anyone else messin’ up and givin’ me even more trouble to clean up right now.”
“Of course,” Aubrey chirped. “I’ll call a meeting with Doctor Harris Bonkers.”
Mama half cracked a smile at that. “Good. Now go on.”
They cleared the room, pursued by her weary displeasure. As Barclay stepped through the doorway, he heard her call him back.
He ducked his head back in the room, hesitantly. “Yes?”
Mama steeped her fingers, and peered at him over her hands for a long moment. “So,” she said, cocking an eyebrow. “Nude yoga?”
“Uh, I’m just going to go. Yep. Good-bye.”
Outside her office, Ned, Duck, and Aubrey were gathered just down the hall. For a moment, Barclay almost felt touched that they had waited for him. Then, he spotted the copy of the Lamplighter in Aubrey’s hands, which she must have grabbed off the table—and, he heard the excerpt she was reading aloud. Dramatically, in her performance voice.
“—the moment I spotted that majestic creature, I realized that there’s so much more to life that we don’t know. Life is beautiful .”
“Aubrey,” he pleaded.
“Take pride! You’re a majestic creature. She even says she left her husband after she saw you, you hunk of a Bigfoot.”
He turned, pleadingly, to Duck. Duck was a sensible person, right? He was a professional, who would take pity on his tormented coworker.
Duck clapped a sympathetic hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry. I’m sure she likes you for more than your ravishin’ good looks.”
Barclay buried his face in his hands.

Chapter 01: Lost and Found
From the computer to the board. From the board to the computer. The motions continued. Ms. Martin stood in front of the auditorium sized classroom, speaking on cells and DNA as the two smart boards behind her displayed everything the Professor stated. Naturally Eva found herself looking over notes, making sure every key detail was taken down. Most of this would be reviewed once labs started, so no need to stress over it. Besides, this is Eva's third year taking a science course under Professor Martin. By now the professor's antics were memorized. Hopefully, anyways.
Shifting to the right, Eva arched an eyebrow as she faced her roommate and best friend since freshmen year at New York University, Kelly Griffin, as the two clearly had different outlooks when it came to Martin's class. Leaning back in the cushion seat, Eva crossed her arms, plainly giving Kelly her attention.
"What?" Kelly whispered, but her lack of knowledge as to why Eva was looking at her, proved the point as to what the real reason was by itself.
"We will have a test in two days, Kels."
"I know. I don't need to write notes for everything she says to pass. Besides, are you going to even remember half of that shit by Friday?"
"Maybe not," Eva responded honestly, making them of both smirk. "At least I'm trying though."
False hope was more than nothing at all. At least its giving the chance to succeed. Instead of completely ignoring everything by being on Amazon searching for phone cases.
"Trying my ass. I rather do it my way then play with my own emotions."
It was the same petty discussion every time. They both believed in different rituals. Rituals that had served both of them over their years. Kelly has been a last-minute study person her life, while Eva believes if you continue to go over the material it has no choice, but stick to you.
"So, what? You’re going to spend damn near a hundred dollars on what? Five phone cases, a new screen protector, and.......a lightening phone charger? Really, Kels?"
"What? I need this stuff. Do you know how hard it is to do my make-up, listen to music while trying to charge my phone, which by the way, has a shortage?"
Eva couldn't master up a response. For one that was bizarre, yet expected. Kelly had no need for any of the objects in her online shopping cart, but it's what makes her happy. So, either she'll buy them now or she'll just give her doctor of a father the task of doing it later.
These two are from two different lifestyles, but that's what keeps their friendship evened out. Their differences became a balance.
Most importantly she didn't have too much time to respond because in just that short timing an Pop Quiz was being displayed on the two smart boards. Sighing, Eva closed the laptop, putting everything away and dropping her phone down by her bag. With only her notebook and pencil out, she headed her paper properly; waiting until Professor Martin flipped the screen to the quiz itself.
Kelly looked up, not an inch of surprise crossing her face. Instead she rose an eyebrow at her beloved friend and went back to her shopping. Which most did. Pop quizzes were a bare minimum of only five percent of the class overall grade; in Martin's. Eva wouldn't take her chances however. Besides, passing these quizzes is known to help Martin lighten up on the red pen during grading.
In a matter of seconds, Eva went from wanting to smack some sense into Kelly to starting with her first written response answer to an DNA cell related question of a total of five. It would take her the rest of class to finish these questions because of how much detail was expected from each student.
By the time Martin's infamous timer went off, Eva was finishing her last sentence.
"Time's up. Drop your papers off on your way out, I'll have them graded by Monday after your test. Have a nice day."
Ripping out the paper from the ridged ends of the notebook, Eva dropped it and her pencil in her book bag before getting up and following Kelly down the stairs.
Together the girls joined the crowd leaving the science related building and into the fall breeze of the October weather. The hurricanes and unbearable heat was finally over, while Eva's favorite seasons start to take over. The changing of leaves, from heat to warm and cool temperature drop lower. Meaning the chance to pull out all her favorite clothes. Sweaters, hoodies, thigh-high boots that were brought during the summer while on fifty-percent off sales, long sleeve shirts whether button or pull overs, and baseball caps even.
The weather of love and fashion.
"We should go out tonight."
Bringing herself out of her head, making up possible outfits with future shopping trips, that may not even happen; Eva looked at Kelly, who was digging in her bag like a crazy woman. Maybe for her phone. The girl wouldn't live without it if you paid her to do so. While, Eva could leave hers unattended for days if she wanted.
"I don't know, Kels."
"Why not?" Snapping her head into Eva's direction, Kelly finally stopped digging in that damn bag. "What do you honestly have to do better? Study?"
"No, sleep."
"Bitch," Eva laughed at her response, walking the path to Kelly's next lab. "How about you resend those pictures for the note packet in Steven's class and give yourself some time to rethink that decision? Its free tonight if we're there before 11. And neither of us have classes tomorrow."
Sighing, Eva went to her pockets then to her bag. Coming up short on both ends. Of course. She forgot her phone when dropping it beside her bag right before the quiz. Professor Martin would have a class in less than ten minutes and even though she had no fancy iPhone, that Note 7 would catch the eye of anyone worthy of wanting it. Including her nosy professor.
"I forgot it......"
"Really, Ev? That's like the third time you've done that."
"I know," Stopping Kelly from walking backwards, Eva held her hands up, declining the offer. "I'll go. You head to class, I'll send the notes before you get there so you can have them up before he starts."
Not wasting a second, both of them split ways and Eva retreated their steps back to the building so many of her classmates had just piled out of. It sounds different, even felt different when walking into the silent hallway. The doors of Martin, Williams, and Mr. Elza's classes were open for the next group of students, thankfully none of them stood outside waiting, attempting to start up conversations. Eva didn’t plan to stop until she was entering the class, and that’s, thankfully, how everything planned out.
"I know what you're here for."
Sighing, she shook her head, walking into the class. Of course, Martin was a sticker for cleanliness, time, and most importantly someone paying attention. Eva should've known her fear of someone else getting her phone would be nothing compared to Martin getting her hands on it herself.
"I'm sorry," Eva mumbled, but was cut short from an intruder's voice coming from the opposite side of the room. Her phone only inches away from where the man stood.
"Good, because I don’t plan on wasting much more time." He responds, his eyes fixed on the phone and then to Martin. Conforming what Eva thought; neither of them cared that she was even here. Honestly, Eva was too caught up in the secret guest to care why she came back. Call her nosy, but it was surly interesting.
His voice was all male. Deep, masculine, raspy, and commanding all the attention in every corner of the room with each syllable oozing from those pink, plump lips.
His attention was solely on the class room, taking in every detail as if it was his first time being here. The tone of his voice betraying that thought.
Eva kept her distance, easily slipping out the doorway of the class from their visual, but definitely close enough to eavesdrop on the conversation. She's never known Martin to have such a secretive life. The woman had sense the sexy stranger before he even spoke and did so with so much ease that Eva knew this wasn't the first and if she didn't have whatever this predator wanted, it wouldn't be the last.
"I haven't gotten my hands on it yet."
"That's not what I want to hear. It’s been almost two months, Vivien."
"Yeah, well it’s not the easiest task here, East." Dropping her famous red pen, Ms. Martin looked up who Eva could now call East.
"Especially when you're not trying."
The low rumble of Rihanna's singing Consideration caught the conversation, cutting through the tension filled room. Eva sighed in relief, after a second of silence she peeked into the class. Her eyes darting in the direction of her phone once she saw the screen lightening up against the tiled floor.
"I'll be back." The next second his tattooed hand was covering the phone. Eva's eyes trailing the lengths of his arms, both filled of drawings, cartoons, words which she couldn't make out, and random things that her eyes couldn't concentrate on. East heading at her. His long legs getting him across the class, past a terrified Martin, and to Eva in seconds.
Now, she sees him. The man's arms and neck covered in tattoos also the only places she hadn't saw where the areas his black Tommy Hilfiger shirt hid. One even right above his right eye the lone word "Mugga" traced cursively. The scruffy beard and low eyes made her back into the red painted wall behind her. His height causing Eva to tilt her head up.
"Yours?" East holds out the oversize Tinker Bell phone case holding the Samsung device, his raspy voice low as if he's not interested in anyone else hearing their conversation. Maybe he isn't.
Eva looked at the phone, then to his fingers. Each finger having the letters: E A S T written on each one. The name was obviously popular.
East Harlem. The hint of an Spanish roll to his tongue.
"Mines." It was a stupid, stupid response, but the best she could come up with. There's something about a young girl when she's in the presence of a commanding, handsome, and older man that’ll make her act a fool of herself.
Grabbing the cell phone, Eva checked her screen for any scratches or cracks, fortunately for her today was the lucky day. The sound of a low chuckle caught her attention and she looked up to see East shaking his head at her, the sight of a perfect smile staring back at her.
"Be careful." And then he was gone.
"I cannot believe I let you talk me into this bull." Eva's voice radiated through the dorm room. Her freshly painted nails tracing the leather material of her sleeveless crop top down to ripped jeans hugging her thighs and hips.
For the past two hours, she's been in and out of clothes. From one hanger to the next as each fell to the comforter on her bed. Giving into the idea of clubbing with Kelly wasn't a fight. She knew from the second she asked, they'll be going together. For one, there's the buddy system which they live by. Secondly, it was Wednesday. Fox in Brooklyn was free until whenever every Wednesday night. She wouldn't miss another weeknight outing.
"Please." Looking over at Kelly, Eva shot her a look before grabbing her make-up case and heading to the bathroom that separated their room and the girls next door. Surprisingly, neither Eva or Kelly have introduced themselves to their suite-mates. Maybe if this was their freshmen year, yeah. But now at their junior years, it's a no go. Kelly isn't everyone’s number one, anyway. From her ties with Wall Street moguls through her father, expensive taste in clothes, shoes, and even food. Plus, her loud mouth. Few chose to deal with Kelly Griffin. While Eva simply never makes time for any of it.
"Momma Reed calling you, Ev!"
Plugging in the flat iron, Eva made sure the heat was appropriate before leaving out the bathroom and back to her bed where the flashing phone laid. Luckily, Kelly answered the phone call or she would've been stuck with another river flow of missed calls and voicemail.
"Mama." She took the call back into the bathroom, leaving Nicole Reed on speaker as she parted her wavy hair into sections to straighten.
"Eva, I called you earlier after your afternoon class. Did something happen? You're okay?"
"No, momma. Everything is fine, I just got busy with some papers and a class project," And most of my day was spent thinking of a man who is has an DANGER sign nailed into his chest. "I saw your call, but I just figured I could call you later on."
“You know I worry about you, Eva. Later on isn't promise, sweetheart."
Nicole Reed is an dear woman. She loves hard and means well, but what Eva has learned over the years is her mother has dealt with many misfortunes. Situations that have left tarnished memories in her and burned her joy. Eva only knows of only one disaster that could leave a mother so hurt and scared. Her oldest brother Nick Rita disappeared during the early 2000s, not once showing any signs of worry or hurt to their mother. Eva thought the idea of her mother losing her first born would keep them settle. Just in case, Nick ever showed up again. Instead, they ran months after he disappeared and haven’t been back to Atlanta since.
From house to house, neighborhood to neighborhood, state to state, and even out of the country once where they called Europe home a year.
Nothing helped the trouble soul. Eva knew after some time her mother was going crazy. Or at least losing it. The late whispers of monsters, Nicole mumbling low words with the lone name Nick catching Eva's attention each time.
"Mom, I'm okay. You worry about me too much."
"For God's sake, Eva, you went to New York. Of course, I do. You're in danger's plate."
Monsters live.
Her favorite words.
"Ma......"
Trailing down the pieces of hair, Eva was half way finished and decided that some lipstick and a quick fresh face would be the perfect look for the night.
"I'm fine. I'm promise, but......I gotta go, ma. I'll call you tomorrow afternoon. Love you."
Pressing the red button on her screen, Eva watched the picture or herself and her mother disappeared as her phone log appeared.
"Same ol'?" Eva nodded at Kelly's question before grabbing a rubber hair tie and parting the top of her now straighten jet black tresses. Making a ponytail before fixing it into a high-top knot.
"If same ol' is another way of saying crazy? Yes, same ol'."
"Your mother is passionate, Eva. You'll be glad to have her one day."
Those words weren’t as effective as the first time she heard them, but, still forcing Eva to drop her arms and look at the back of her best friend as she walked out the bathroom. Not for too long, but she did dwell on the thought. Of course, death is in everyone's plans, but doesn't make it any easier to accept. Does Nicole drive her crazy? Yes, but, she's her mother. That’s what expected. Besides they do say mother knows best.
She stills remember telling her mother that she would be attending New York University. Being accepted mostly from graduating top ten of her high school class. Most parents would die in happiness, trying to make sure the funds would be there for the child's admission just in case FASFA caused any headaches. They'll make sure that the trip there and picking of dorms for their child or children would be an enjoyable and memorable time. Very few would be complaining and crying for the child to change their minds.
Nicole hated every second of the process. Always finding a way to make sure she was getting into Eva's mind.
So far, she's done so, just instead, Nicole is pushing her in the opposite direction.
"I need some of this!" Eva shouted over the music playing. She knew the song from riding with Kelly, but the artist's name wouldn't pop up for nothing.
For the past three hours, this has been their sanctuary. From forgetting about test, notes, quizzes, homework, papers, or projects. Even overprotective mothers and handsomely scary strangers. Everything that wasn't club talk was like speaking Creole to both Eva and Kelly. All they wanted for tonight was some peace. Away from the dorms of NYU and to the place of where normal teenagers relaxed and enjoyed their weekend-like Wednesday night.
"Here," Kelly handed over the cup to Eva, the sound of a sudden gasp and a frown meet Eva soon after.
Beside Kelly and Eva, there was a man. Standing at about six feet even, dressed in all black. Eva hadn't notice him before maybe because she spotted her friend across the club with a cup and with only one of them holding the fake ID to be old enough to drink; she didn't care to pay attention to anything else.
Taking a gulp of it, Eva went to hand it back, but Kelly waved her off motioning to have to have it. Nodding, she excused herself from the small moment her friend and the grim keeper were having and finished the shot within seconds.
Tossing the cup away, Eva went outside, past the bouncer who she remembers Kelly calling Devin and outside to the coolness of the late-night air. She wasn't so sure of going back in. What she expected the drink to do; cool her off, give her dehydrated body some liquids. It seems to have done the opposite. Maybe it's the fact it's Hennessy. Regardless, she needed to be away from the loudness, heat, and intoxicating scent of weed the inside of the club provided her with.
It takes all of ten minutes for Eva to realize that she was either a low tolerance person or worst and she was drugged. It couldn't be though. It just had to be that in that small shot of Hennessy, she hit her limit. Kelly wouldn't allow her to drink something drugged.
Her body was going into panic mode, but she couldn’t lift a muscle now. Everything was weary. Sliding down the brick wall of the club, Eva dropped her phone between her legs. The wallet case falling open and her debt card and driver license falling out right in front of her.
"Fuck...."
‘Deep breaths and keep your eyes open.’
She chanted that over and over before Eva could take control of her posture. Out the corner of her eye, she saw the bouncer moving closer to her, but thankfully for her unalert body he stayed a few feet away as if he was trying to be protective of her.
"I got it." That voice.
Seconds later that same tattooed hand wrapped around her phone, picking up the cards also in the process, but paying attention closest to the license.
"Eva....look up."
The sight of the face she had just encountered hours ago meet her glazy eyes. Eva didn't know whether she should be on guard or accept the help because whatever was going on, she couldn't fight alone. But who was he to help? Some stranger.
"I need to find Kel." She finally mumbles, her tongue feeling too heavy for her mouth in the moment.
This was either happening for a reason or she was in trouble. Out of millions of people in one city how does she run into someone twice, who by the way, she doesn't know, in one day?
There was no time to dwell on her thoughts. Before her reappearing guest could answer to her request of finding her friend; everything was gone black on her.

Cyber Monday Laptop Deals | What stores have the best deals?
Amazon.com is my favorite site for Cyber Monday laptop deals. They don’t run just laptops, but pretty much everything. They have new deals popping up every few hours starting on the 23rd, and for every deal, there’s a nice little bar showing how many % have been sold. You’d be surprised how fast bars for some of the deals fill up, but if you’re a fast clicker and don’t “hover” or sit on the fence for too long, you should have no problems getting the deals you want.
Some other great stores to shop at online for laptops are Tiger Direct, HP, Dell, J&R, and websites for popular offline retailers such as Best Buy and Fry’s Electronics. You’ll have to like the brands offered on some of these websites (HP, Dell, etc.), though.
Cyber Monday Laptop Deals | Where can I find these awesome deals?
As we get closer to Cyber Monday, I’ll be posting top Cyber Monday laptop deals from all over the web. I love to browse deal forums and I’ll be sure to relay the best ones to you, my readers. However, I’m going to stick to online deals, since that’s my specialty. I’ll be celebrating the Thanksgiving holidays with my family and friends, so I won’t be standing in line. I hate the cold, after all.
The only thing that’s annoying about online shopping, in my opinion, is the wait. Even though I have an Amazon Prime membership, I’m still looking at a 2-day delivery time, which is hard sometimes!
But overall I think it’s well worth it with the money I save. Most states don’t have to pay taxes when shopping online. And for Amazon, if I really wanted something bad enough, it’s only $3.99 for overnight shipping.
You really can’t beat that. So I’ll be focusing on Amazon deals this Cyber Monday for obvious reasons.

Tridapta - An Interface for Everyone
User Need
Over 54 million people in the United States have arthritis, a disease that makes it difficult to use the joints in the hands and wrists to perform everyday tasks (CDC). This disease is currently incurable, and its effects can severely limit patients’ abilities to use computers, which involve significant wrist, thumb, and finger motion. In order to help these patients interface with computers, ergonomic mice have been created, but innovation in this space has remained stagnant over the past few years. Patients with arthritis will live with it for the rest of their lives, and in an increasingly technology-saturated world, it is imperative for these individuals to seamlessly interface with technology. For this project, our target user is affected by arthritis but wants to continue to easily interface with computers.
Expert Interviews
In order to better understand the pathology of arthritis, how it affects patients, and what devices exist on the market to help patients with this disease interface with computers, we interviewed Dr. Shiv Sehra, a rheumatologist at Mt. Auburn Hospital, Catherine Wee, a physical therapist at Spaulding Rehab Center, and one of the designers who created an ergonomic mouse called the Handshoe mouse. We learned that rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis affect different joints in the hands, and that a comprehensive solution must alleviate strain in both the wrists and thumbs. We found that younger patients were more likely to be negatively affected by being unable to use technology. In talking to Ms. Wee, we learned that patients adapt, often inefficiently, to keyboards that are too painful to use, which leads them to type with two fingers. She also highlighted a lack of innovation in the space, noting that few new devices had been produced for this market in the last 25 years. By talking to the mouse designer, we learned that the Handshoe mouse has been rigorously designed to support the wrist and hand, and that the aesthetics of the mouse were deliberately chosen to appeal to the most people. Given this information, we identified the following requirements for our device:
Utilize current technology to provide patients with an experience that feels modern
Adapt technology to fit patients’ behaviors, and provide flexibility to meet different clinical needs
Alleviate any strain on the wrist and thumb
The Solution
Thus, after reviewing the results of our field and online research with professionals in the design and chiropractic industries, we decided to build a comprehensive solution that provided multiple avenues of facilitating computer usage among those affected by arthritis. Our product has 3 components: one, a voice command system powered by Dragon Voice; two, a hand motion detector using LeapMotion technology; and three, KeyTweak which is a software that allows users to swap the position of keys on their keyboard.
Hand motion detector: Our hand motion detector packages LeapMotion technology into a much sleeker and cleaner design that users can mount onto their laptops. Essentially an adhesive black strip, TriDapta’s hand motion detector is meant to provide an alternative to a computer mouse or laptop trackpad. Often these two things can cause undue strain on our hands from constant clicking or improper hand position for prolonged periods of time. Our detector strip allows users to control their screens without having to touch any surface, making it a superior alternative for those that want to avoid exerting pressure using their fingers.
Voice Control: Using Dragon speech recognition software, users can control their computer using voice commands such as “swipe right” or “scroll down.” Additionally, they can dictate their thoughts and documents. Speech recognition is especially handy for users that need to type something quickly, such as responding to a text or transcribing a document.
KeyTweak: KeyTweak is useful for users who have specific problems reaching certain keys on their keyboard. Using KeyTweak, users can modify their keyboard to best suit their needs, such as moving the space bar to the shift key or double-tapping a key to change it to uppercase. We imagine that software engineers and coders especially will find this feature useful.
User Experience
Our product is unique because it combines existing innovation in the industry into a “one-stop shop” of adaptive technology features that customers can buy to fix their existing computers. The value of our product is that it is made to modify an existing laptop in a super easy fashion, so customers don’t have to go out and buy a new laptop or deal with complicated instructions. We not only integrate all three technologies into a cohesive platform, we also ensure that users are able to access the latest technology, as we will regularly update our products. Instead of wrangling with three different platforms, we give users the ease of using one streamlined product.
