Whatever interest I had in Castlevania Nocturne is just... depleted, learning how shitty they did Maxim and Lydie. I haven't seen it, and like I said, no longer care to, because they off screen death'd both of them. Naturally, they were sure to make sure to clarify that Lydie stuck around at least long enough to give Juste a daughter, thus ensuring Richter's existence down the line.

What utter trash.

I know Harmony of Dissonance isn't as beloved as other CV titles but damn. It's my favorite Castlevania game, although I can easily say it's nowhere near the best in the series. And I'm definitely apt to overlook some of its flaws because I have such a soft spot for it. But did Nocturne really have to make Maxim and Lydie bottom of the food chain shit? Like, their deaths inspire the downward trajectory of Juste's life, and his tragedy is just there to develop Richter?

Again, I could be way off because all of my info is secondhand and I'm bitter af. But UGH.

Being forced to mercy-kill your best friend after he was turned into a vampire presumably against his will would definitely add yet another layer of —

Juste Belmont

The protagonist of the story.

Maxim Kishine

Death

The Grim Reaper appears many times in front of Juste as he traverses Castlevania in search of Lydie.

He perceives the "color" of Juste's soul and senses that he is a descendant of the Belmont family. Why is he in this castle, separated from his Master...?

Merchant

He runs several small shops around Castlevania, a den of monsters.

Although he has a dubious air about him, his business is legitimate and his items are not dubious.

These items will be of great help in Juste's exploration of the castle.

Story

It's been half a century since Simon Belmont sealed Dracula away.

Juste is a descendant of the Belmont clan; Lydie, his childhood friend, has been kidnapped. In search of Lydie, Juste is led by his best friend Maxime to an eerie old castle not even mentioned in literature...

Juste Belmont

A descendant of the Belmont clan, fated to hunt those who dwell in the darkness. He spends his days dealing with the relics that Dracula once left in the world, but when his childhood friend Lydie was kidnapped, he and his best friend Maxim go to rescue her.

Lydie Erlanger

Juste and Maxime's childhood friend. She is adored by both of them, and Lydie herself cherishes the time the three of them spend together more than anything else. This incident started when she was taken away to an old castle.

Maxim Kishine

Juste's best friend. Two years before the incident occurred, he had been on a training trip, but suddenly suffered injuries all over his body, and even though he lost his memories of the training, he returned. Afterwards, he tells Juste about Lydie's kidnapping, and follows the lead of the fragments of his memory to the old castle.

Death

A loyal subordinate of the Dark Lord Dracula, if not his most trusted confidant. The fateful opponent of Juste and the Belmont clan, who crossed swords with him many times in the past. On behalf of the lord of the castle, he welcomes Juste when he enters the old castle.

I know, I know. It’s very likely that even though Richter doesn’t look at all like Juste or Lydie, he’s still their child. Or possibly their grandchild. (That would, admittedly, also help explain where his features came from.) He could be their grandson by a child (son) born shortly after Harmony of Dissonance when they were, say 19-20. Or he could be their own child, born when they were both in their early 40s. (If I’m not way off on his dob.)

But seriously. Our boy Richter looks like Juste and Maxim’s lovechild and no I am not wrong about this. Plus, Juste, Maxim, and Lydie were ALL together and I’m also not wrong about this. I know that’s not canon but I am still not wrong.
