Vaikka netti on täynnä kauniita kuvia, mielestäni paras kukka-asetelmien inspiraation ja informaation lähde ovat aiheesta kirjoitetut kirjat. Tässä pieni arvostelukimara, joka helpottaa ostopäätöstä. Suomalaisia teoksia ei kukkien asettelusta maljakkoon löydy. Kirjat ovat myös liian erikoistuneita, niinpä niitä ei oikein löydy kirjakaupoistakaan ja siksi ne on hankittava sokkona netistä. Minä ostin kaikki kirjani Amazonista, www.amazon.com.

Inspiration to flower arranging

Even thought you can find lots of beautiful photographs on flower arranging in the internet, I still think most informative inspiration can be found in the written books. Here’s a little review on books I have bought, to help you choose which book is best for you. There are no books written about flower arranging in Finnish and it is so specialised a topic you cannot really find them in a book store either. I got all my books from Amazon, www.amazon.com

The Flower Recipe Book (Kukkareseptikirja), Alethea Harampolis & Jill Rizzo

Jos hankit vain yhden kirjan kukkien asettelusta, tämä on erinomainen valinta. Kaikki välineet ja perustekniikat esitellään lyhyesti ja selkeästi kirjan alussa. 'Kukkareseptit' on järjestetty kukkien nimien mukaan aakkosjärjestykseen. Melkein kaikki ohjeet ovat kuvallisia, joten niitä on helppo seurata. Asetelmat ovat kauniita ja ihanan lennokkaita. Kukka-asetelmat neuvotaan tekemään maljakkoon yksinkertaisella 'base, focal, bits' -ohjeella eli ensin pohjakukat, sitten pääkukat ja viimeisenä hapsut, eli täydentävät kukat. Asetelmia kirjassa on sekä helppoja että monimutkaisia, mikä tekee kirjasta mielenkiintoisen pidempäänkin harrastaneelle.

If you were to get just one book about flower arranging, this is it! All the equipment and the basic techniques are explained very clearly at the beginning of the book. The content, the floral recipes, is alphabetically arranged by flower names. The arrangements are beautiful and whimsical. The simple ‘base, focal, bits’ advice makes sense and you can follow photographs when making arrangements yourself - most of the arrangement advice is given with photographs. There are both easy and more complicated arrangements, which makes it interesting for the beginners and also for more learned amateurs.

Jos olet floristi, osta tämä kirja! Nimekäs floristi Ariella Chezar myös opettaa floristeja ja kasvattaa leikkokukkia, tämä näkyy upeasti kirjassa monella tasolla. Kaikkien kukkien asettelusta kiinnostuneiden pitäisi lukea kirjassa oleva luku 'The art of painterly arrangements'. Kirjassa on vain tekstimuotoiset ohjeet asetelmiin ja yksi kuva valmiista asetelmasta. Osa ohjeista on harrastajalle vaikeaselkoisia tai vain liian vaikeita (juu, en lähde tekemään roikkuvaa morsiuskimppua). Mutta silti kirja antaa harrastajalle tosi paljon, parasta antia ovat sesongin vahva läsnäolo ja inspiroivat väri- ja tekstuuriyhdistelmät.

If you are a florist, get this book quick! Ariella Chezar is a highly acclaimed floral designer who also holds workshops for florists and is a flower farmer –this is evident though the whole of the book. I think everybody who is interested in flower arranging should read the chapter in this book called 'The art of painterly arrangements'. All the instructions in the book are in text format with a photograph of the finished arrangement. Some of the advice is hard to follow or just too complicated a job (no, I’m not going to attempt to make a waterfall bridal bouquet…). Still, the book gives a lot to amateurs, beautiful inspiration on colour and texture combinations and a strong presence of the floral seasons.

Bringing Nature Home (Luontoa kotiin), Ngoc Minh Ngo, Nicolette Owen

Jos omistat kukkivan puutarhan, on tämä kirja sinulle. Kirjan asetelmissa on käytetty sekä puutarhan kukkia että luonnon kasvistoa ja se on järjestetty kasvukausien mukaan. Vaikka puutarhat ja luonto ovat amerikkalaisia, on mukana yllättävän vähän lajeja, jotka eivät menesty Suomen oloissa. Minusta kirjan loppu kannattaa lukea ensin, siellä esitellään perustekniikat ja välineet sekä neuvotaan todella selkeästi asetelman tekeminen kuvallisilla ohjeilla. Vaikka asetelmat ovat välillä hyvinkin yksinkertaisia, ne eivät ole tylsiä. Maljakoiden käyttö on kirjan suola. Kukat ja maljakko on aina ajateltu kokonaisuutena ja täydellisen maljakon valitseminen tukee hienosti kukkien linjoja ja väritystä.

If you have a garden full of flowers, this book is for you. Arrangements have been done using both garden flowers and wild flora and they are in a seasonal order. Surprisingly small amount of the plants included in the book do not grow in Finland. I would read the end of the book first, where all the basic techniques and equipment requirements are, with a really good advice on how to make an arrangement with explanatory photographs. Even though the arrangements are very simple at times, they are not boring. The very clever use of vases in the book changes even the most simple of arrangements into an interesting study of lines and colours.

Styling Nature (Luonnon tyylittely), Lewis Miller

Tämä kirja on taidetta, kukilla maalausta, jonka tekijä Lewis Miller on New Yorkin huippufloristeja. Kirjan kuvat ovat isoja ja asetelmat vielä isompia. Ne rönsyilevät ja ryöpsähtävät. Ne saavat katsomaan uudelleen ja ajattelemaan: mitä, voiko noinkin tehdä?? Ohjeita asetelmiin ei anneta, eikä niitä jää kaipaamaankaan. Kirjan lopussa olevat kuvat ja tekstit kertovat, mitä kukkia asetelmiin on käytetty. Vain muutama kukkalaji ei kasva Suomen puutahoissa ja olenkin lukenut näitä listoja läpi uudestaan ja uudestaan. Kirja on mieletön inspiraation lähde, sekä Millerin teksti että kuvat hänen asetelmistaan.

This book is art, painting with flowers, by a top New York florist Lewis Miller. The photographs are big and beautiful, most of them filling two pages and the arrangements are even better. They ramble and roam. They make you look again, thinking ‘whaat, can you do that?’ There are no ‘how to’ instructions, and they are not missed. There is a list of flowers used in each arrangement at the end of the book. Only a few flowers cannot be grown in Finland and I have read and re-read these lists over and over. Both Miller’s text and his arrangements are a superb source of inspiration.

Foraged Flora (Hortoiltu flora), Louesa Roebuck & Sarah Lonsdale

Ilman kirjan tekstiä tämä kirja olisi sohvapöytäkirja, kaunis koriste-esine. Tämä on floristin ja kirjailijan vuoden mittainen matkakertomus maaseudun ojanpientareille ja maatiloille, yksi tarina joka kuukaudelle, alkaen syyskuussa ja päättyen elokuuhun. Kirja on ylistys rikkaruohoille ja se houkuttelee lukijaa katsomaan ympärilleen tarkemmin. Minä haistoin, maistoin ja kuulin tämän kirjan.

Without the text this book would be a coffee table book, just a beautiful object. This is a travel journal from a florist and a writer to the countryside, it’s roadsides and farms, one story a month, beginning in September and ending in August. The book is an ode to weeds and it tempts the reader to look around more carefully. I smelled, tasted and heard this book.
